From a live broadcast of Rennes Transmusicals festival 1990 (thanks for the info SimonTologist) (Sorry for the visual blip - didn't affect the audio so ne'er mind...)
John Leckie produced their first album and said that Lee played him a song called “Fishing net”...(which evolved into “Was it something I said”......) ....he said it was one of the best tunes he had ever heard and wanted to record it but nope Mavers said it was for the fabled 2nd album........if only ......
In a Consequence of Sound article it is said that it was Steve Lillywhite who said that. "While working with the La’s in London, Lillywhite remembered Mavers playing a song he wrote called “Fishing Net” that Lillywhite described as one of the best he ever heard. When he asked Mavers if they could record it, Mavers replied “No, that’s for the second album.”
Was it something I said? Or something in your head Get out your bed and Come fill a fishin net Down to the bay On my lonely way Put out your love And come fill a fishin net Put out your love And come fill a fishin net Put out your love And come fill a fishin net
It's so frustrating to hear these incredible bootlegs and wonder what might've been, but then again hearing these tunes on a rough recording is somewhat closer to The La's ethic. It's a catch-22.
Thomas W Ahhh I mind seeing both the Las. And cast. Happy days cast were fking awesome if you got to see em early. The Las were different like fk me that's mental shit
+William Harris And the fact Jake Bugg doesn't write his own songs alone, he has about 2 or 3 writers with him. I was asked to do some work on his debut album a few years ago but had to decline as i was with my family when my old man was dying. Mavers is the real deal, pure talent. Bugg is not.
Same with Robbie Williams and those little cunts in One Direction. They get credited as songwriters just for standing over the REAL songwriter and saying "Yeah, that's really good I like that".
Really has the sound of the sea about it. The rhythm as someone in another thread wisely mentioned is like an Italian Tarantella I went and listened to some Italian Tarantellas and there is definitely influences in 'Fishing Net' Lee never made it a secret that he listened and took influence from many genre's of music. Fishing Net is fabulous 😊
Hey ! According to the voice, I think it was on Bernard Lenoir's programme, on the radio channel "France Inter". Great song by the way, thanks very much for putting it online !
great song, really eerie recording - i'm addicted to it. i don't think it would work recorded in a proper studio. anyone else spotted the police riff at the end ?
+José Marco Segura Jaubert That's the brilliant thing about Mavers. His songs are really timeless and you can trace their roots back to some places you don't find in most other music.
To the comments about the riff at the end: it is the start of Doledrum, another song on their setlist. The song itself is one of the best I have heard, easily one of my favourites m, the bassline is absolutely bouncing all the way through, the lyrics are great as per, Mavers' voice sounds class, and then the lead guitar comes on strong after the final verse to combine with the bass and Mavers' rhythm guitar, it is supreme.
Does anyone know what song this album is on exactly? As far as i know they only made one studio album. So where is the studio version of this song? Or is it just a live song.
that riff from 2:01 is the same as the end of videotape by radiohead. great minds think alike eh. if lee mavers made another record itd probably be the greatest thing to happen in music for over a decade.
hi there could someone explain me the lyrics, i can't get why he talks about "fishing net" and the relation with the rest of the lyrics like "put out your love and come fill a fishing net" (of course i'm a huge fan of Lee Mavers, that's why I wanna know)
Hi everyone. I have the full recording of that concert if anyone is interested. In return I'd love to know what the lyrics to this song are, been trying to figure them out for twenty years... :(
there are still great bands out nowadays, im not refering to the lies of the wombats but the view(minus their song same jeans) and the strokes babyshambles franz paolo nutini nd jamie t

Absolutely perfect. That bass line and Maver's voice is chilling. I will love this band for as long as I live.
It's been 10 years, skamp... You still listening to The La's?

@@lomarsweed6604Iam.
Best available version of one of the best songs ever.
it scrambles my head how brilliant yet unknown this is
That Bass line knocks me out every time :0
One of my favorite La's tunes. The bassline is perfection!
I don't understand why this wasn't in every set they did, what a great choon.
This song is amazing. So catchy, the bass, overall well put together. I can't stop listening.
I like the deeper rich base and would prefer to hear it if I have to miss the full breath of the rest of the guitars, sounds.
I love his honesty and his courage..always have and always will...God bless lee mavers xxx
Beast of a bass

@@galetinm i just kinda found this band and want to know why did they only release one album.. why not the 2nd one
This is truly a TIMELESS MELODY... :)
Too beautiful. Brings tears. Loved this song a long time now.
What a top tune. It's a shame that he was on a wavelength that no one else could seem to tune into!
I love this version of this song with the funky bassline
I love the bass. ¡Brillante!
Who?

Yeh no doubt!
Holy funk how've I only just discovered this belter?!
+Chris Wright keep looking the La's have dozens of them, even the half thought of tunes like this one.
It is genius how it feels that they get a full story, instrumentally, vocally, out of a few lyrics and with this raw demo feel.
Yes. This
no ones done it better than Mavers, before or since. Jake Bugg will be striving his entire life to write a tune as good as this
+William Harris And the fact Jake Bugg doesn't write his own songs alone, he has about 2 or 3 writers with him. I was asked to do some work on his debut album a few years ago but had to decline as i was with my family when my old man was dying. Mavers is the real deal, pure talent. Bugg is not.

saw bugg at festival last yr, shit hot guitarist but nothing near this
Strange to mention a goon like Jake Bugg in the same sentence as The La's???
this song,captures something very deep
How was this not a single?
The sea salt and breeze seems to be in every fibre of The La's / Mavers. I don't know if this is skiffle style but it's always refreshing.
right that! The Mersey-sippi and the Pool-of_life.
Psychedelic sea air man
cant get enough of this tune!

Amazing tune, shame it never got recorded properly as it's totally mint!
imagine the 2nd album with songs like this on and I am the key / raindance etc!!! holy moly!!
Beautiful, perfect. :)
finally found the song my heart has been fucking feeling for.
Wow- Blown away by this! La's have more great songs than every single one on their eponymous!
best version on youtube!
Best band ever. Simple as that.
So good. Every time I hear them I wish they'd released more music. Oh well.
Even if this was released today 2024 it’s just another quality LA’s tune!
love this...they had somethin so,so special...what a shame!sheps,swansea!
Can't recommend the La'z tribute highly enough. Really do the songs justice, talented and professional. No frills skiffle .
That bass is absolutely genius
best band ev
I dance like a Charlie Brown character when I hear this. Love it so much.
Smack,.. hell of a drug, what coulda been??

great song, really eerie recording - i'm addicted to it. i don't think it would work recorded in a proper studio. anyone else spotted the police riff at the end ?
Top class!!
You can hear La Bamba on there and that song got his roots in XVII Century in Mexico. Truly Timeless music by LEE
+José Marco Segura Jaubert That's the brilliant thing about Mavers. His songs are really timeless and you can trace their roots back to some places you don't find in most other music.
This was on the Crescent Tapes!
Superb!
joyous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fuckin love this tune..proper la's,come ead lee get it together!!
Lee just let it out. I'm begging you. I need you to lead me on my way....
They could've put this in the Callin' All 4xCD boxset.
Wow, lovely song. Come on Lee, start touring again!
Trop fort !
Fuck all the "if only" studio versions, this is all I need.

my favourite live La's bootleg is the Elland rd gig fom '91. recorded from the crowd rather than the desk
proper winner this
❤
Sweet!
Honestly always thought john was a bit rudimentary on the bass but this is top drawer. Sorted job la.
You know who taught him, right.
first thing i thought..the wailers...thought it was just me ;)
repeat, repeat, repeat..... something I said?
it's not on the transmusicals festival but in the french radio France inter on " LES INROCKS"
It's a Sardinian sea shanty ❤
