Try using one of those retractable badge holders for easy access to your kula cloth! The kind of thing an employee would wear on a lanyard or belt for accessing a security key. You just need to be able to reach part of the kula cloth a little and then you can pull it out to where you need it without taking your pack off. When you're done, *shwoop!* it just retracts back into place! It makes quick pit stops easy when you're solo.
This video was so nice, coming from someone who's been accumulating gear for *too long* and has yet to actually go backpacking. This demystifies all the things, and reminds me what I still need to obtain for a safe trip! I would love a video about gear maintenance - I'm familiar with washing down, for example, but what about other things? For example, do water filters need to be cleaned/maintained to still function? And how often does gear need maintenance - every trip, every year, etc?
The region I live in is going through a drought so when there is rain in the forecast I sometimes don’t pack a rain jacket so that I don’t scare the rain away.
I used to camp with a guy who was a rain magnet. If he came, it rained. It was to the point that he planned a trip to an area out west that was drought stricken and it was record rainfall his entire trip.
Ultralight tip: Try castile soap in a visine container instead of bar soap! It is super concentrated and makes cleaning anything (including yourself) so easy with just a few drops and drops weight
I recently went kayak camping and hated having to bare my butt to squat and pee (partly because privacy, but mostly because mosquitos). I thought of your video and have gotten myself a pair of gnara shorts and a humangear gopee. Super excited to try them out! Thanks miranda! Your presence and voice in this space is so important and helpful!
I’m in the very early stages of planning for some backpacking trips and of all the ‘what’s in my pack’ style videos this is the most helpful one yet! Thanks for showing me that all of that can fit in there cause looking at it all laid out it’s so hard to believe 😂😅
Nice video! But I would recommend a pack liner and to put your sleep system+ dry clothes + battery Bank and cables in at the bottom and to keep your tent more accessible. Even if in the desert a pack liner helps to keep your sleep gear clean off sand that can seep in through other gear that you keep on the ground, like your bear can or chair.
Excellent tips! Thank you! Just wondering why you didn’t pack your first day trail lunch in your insulated Big Sky pouch, and cut down on one bag. I love my Big Sky pouch and use it often as a small cooler bag. If I am taking meat, for instance, to cook on the first night, I will place it, frozen, in a ziploc bag inside the sky pouch and it is perfectly defrosted just in time for dinner. I have also used it for crackers or something fragile, to keep it padded in my pack, until I need it for insulating a boil bag at dinner time.
I really enjoyed the real time format! Something about the way my brain works makes it easier to digest it this way. Plus you (and Rainer) are so fun to watch (and listen to)!
I really appreciate you being yourself and embracing all (including us that aren't the thin ones on the trail). Your videos helped us so much as well as being confident enough to go into REI. Going to be so happy to rep your swag when it comes in!
I love watching packing for backpacking videos. I am an experienced backpacker but I'm sure there are still plenty of tips and tricks that I have not thought about. Thanks, Miranda!
Good setup, I like a much more simple loadout focused on water and food. Especially for an overnight trip.. the whole ultralight as simple as possible thing needs to die. I’m also mostly hiking in the ADK46, you just need a much different setup as well here. It’s more climbing than hiking, our trails and summit pushes are no joke.
I'm literally going to be hiking/camping Grand Canyon next week...so, this was a good gut check pre-trip. It's also nice to know that you "try your pack on prior to leaving" I do that and walk around my driveway much to the puzzled looks of my neighbors. Have fun!!! :)
Man, I love packing videos. It's so helpful to hear the what *and* the why. That's much more helpful for deciding what I want than just saying, "you should carry X."
This was so helpful to listen to your thought process behind why you pack the way you do! I would love to see one about menu planning or route planning in real time too!
Oooh, I was bringing the little Nivea cream tin as well. I find it that my feet do so much better against any accidental blisters if they are properly moisturized daily. Wish I did it regularly, instead of on trips only, but it is what it is. And when I got a nasty sunburn, it helped as well.
As a beginner backpacker this was super helpful!! I overpack (professional teardrop camper w/ EVERYTHING packed and no weight limits haha!!) so seeing everything you bring and how you pack is so great! FYI - link to the pee funnel is broken (adding that to my kit!)
Very helpful! I love your videos! Something I really enjoy is the text and cartoony inserts. That makes you stand out. I like the intro and end music, suits you.
I love the idea of camp games/activities! Maybe you could do a video of a list of ones you like or you have seen others use that are practical to bring on a backpacking trip
I am heading out on my first backpacking trip in about two weeks. This video is super helpful! Thanks to you and Rainer, I am going to feel way more confident about this trip! The only thing that I haven’t packed yet is the gummy worms. 😊
I can't wait to get back into hiking again! I used to really enjoy it before the Marine Corps and haven't had the time until now, so I've been binging a lot of your videos to try and relearn how to pack a pack and loving your channel so far!

do you have a video of what goes inside the repair kit? I'm curious of how to assemble my own! So far mine is just the spare stuff and repair items that comes with tent and sleeping pad
I'm taking my first backpacking trip in 10 years next weekend. Even though I have many years of backpacking, I needed a refresher on packing my backpack and this video was perfect! You are an awesome instructor Miranda.
Great video seeing how you have to adapt to what you are carrying each trip. One major question I have not seen answered. Why is a pocketknife in your pack? It is in the name pocketknife. It is a scout essential for camping and you put it away in your pack. You can argue about different types of knives but for so many reasons that needs to be readily available.
I just received my first order of LMNT. I hiked 6 miles and drank more than I normally do ( good thing ) and really liked the watermelon. Today was a non-hiking day. I was a little run down and decided to add 1/2 pack of the grapefruit to my water. It was just the pick-me-up I needed. Miranda, thanks for recommending this product. LMNT, thanks for sponsoring Miranda, my favorite hiker UA-camr.
Miranda, keep it up. Watching your videos are always entertaining. Rainer, nice going, you too, keep it up. You both make a great pair in making these videos!
Miranda, I am curious why only some items "boop" when they get packed and others do not. I also "boop" things into place at times and thought I was the only one!
What is the lotion that you pack in the little tin? I've gone backpacking in Idaho and it's dry enough that multiple people on the trip had cracked and bleeding fingers. I agree that LMNT is fantastic. It's not too sweet and makes a difference in preventing headaches for me.
It's a Nivea Creme tin, can find them at most drug stores, Target, etc. 🙂 I'm an Aquaphor junky myself cause it's more of a multi use item- can use it for both lips, hands, feet, even for light nicks and burns, etc but this one is good too!
Hi! You are not using a pack liner bag in this video. If you had, would you have closed it just with the quilt in (and then having air in it?) or just close on top with everything in it? I will do my test with and without co pression bag but would appreciate your experience. Thank you!
Miranda, love your videos. Question for you, if that’s ok, Is your backpack waterproof? I was kind of surprised you didn’t put your quilt inside some sort of dry sack. I’m always thinking my tent might be clean and dry now but by the next day it will not be and I don’t want it to be packed next to my sleeping bag and clothes. Thanks again for the great videos.
My pack IS waterproof!! When I’m using my other backpack (the REI Flash 55) I’ve started using a pack liner, but with this bag I don’t bother. If my tent is super wet in the morning, I’ll strap it to the outside of my pack instead!
Another nice video. Personally, I love the REI Sahara sun shirt. I have a Nemo Hornet 2P tent. For just me. For a few extra ounces, the space is worth it. A 3P is good for 2 people. Enjoyed the video as usual. Would like to see a 3 day bike packing video with you and Ryan Van Duzer. 😁 Cheers 🌞🚴♀️🖖
This could be a dumb question but I’ve always worried about the smell of food from trail snacks in my pack and food scent on anything kept in a bear canister. Does the scent of food last or is the reason for the bear canister purely to protect your food source from animals and bugs?
I meeeean I think in bear country, you should be as cautious as possible. With small critters, it’s often enough for them to just smell food that was in your pack to make them curious - or they’ve become socialized to backpacks = food and will chew through anything to see if they can find a snack. That being said: I have full on spilled olive juice on my pants, accidentally gotten tuna on my backpack, and for sure had a whole slew of smelly things make their way onto my gear. I think it’s important to know that a bear can smell your food in a bear canister. They can smell you, they can smell your chapstick, all of that. The whole point of a bear can is to keep them from *getting* to that food - not necessarily to keep them from smelling it. So yeah, if you get food on your pack or if it leaves a trace of a smell, try to clean it off, but most often the animal is going to go to the most concentrated smell - the bear canister - and if they are deterred from getting to that food, they’ll move on. Take allllll of that with a grain of salt, because of course it depends on the campsite and how accustomed animals are to people! But I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The scent isn’t going to last that long, and all your other human smells will mix up with it. It’s not a dumb question at all. If you are ever in doubt, talk to park rangers in your area or wherever you are backpacking, and they can give you insight into the behavior of animals in that specific spot. 💚
Question about the food storage - is there risk of all the items you are putting in it that you will keep in your tent (booties, headlamp, etc) absorbing the smell of the food and bringing that smell to your tent? I feel like I hear a mixture of opinions on scented items - maybe this is a personal preference kind of thing?
first comment glory! *Edit*. Just wanted to secure the covetted spot lol, thanks miranda for your awesome personality! Keep being unapologetically yourself!
On your next garage grown gear order get some hmg packing pods. I have 3 pods. 1 quilt 2 clothes 3 misc small items and ditty bag Then my food bag. My tent and rain gear goes in my big mesh pocket. If I think it will for sure rain I move my rain jacket to my left side pocket where my filter is. Right pocket has my filtered water bottles. Edit i also put my chair in the big mesh pocket beside the tent.
I’m loving all of this. Just got to adapt it to the uk where I always have to bag everything in dry bags. Rain is guaranteed! So we always have to pack spare clothes as well. What do you wear to sleep in?
I love that your silicone gummy worm pouch it opens so wide. Where can these be purchased from/what brand are they? Thank you. I've never seen any designed like that.
THANK YOU for the honest comment on the Xero shoes. I have been on the hunt for a hiking shoe with a wide/ natural shape toe box and Xero is more affordable. I love the pair of Lems I got for work so I’ll probably invest in one of their hiker styles.
WooHoo Cosmic Wimpout (and a shout-out to all our late 70's tourneys in South Hadley Massachusetts ). Anyhooo.....I can't be the only one who does this but, within a week of returning from one trip I'm already packed for the next. No matter when that might be. With the exception of food and some clothes, my ten essentials, along with my 'cleaned' tried and true gear are ready. Learned behavior from years ago. When all it took was a phone call with minimal words spoken "you ready to go" and within 20 minutes you were getting picked up. Lost a lot of jobs back then in lieu of adventures. Now living vicariously through Amanda types. Keep on keeping on and live lady, live!
Hi Miranda, what brand is the zip bag with the gummy worms? Cool how it holds itself open at the top! Totally agree that gummiea are an essential hiking snack (although heavy!)
It’s from Humangear! This is the smaller size, but I also have the medium size and I love that one for cold soaking meals. Check it out here! alnk.to/esWf7UF
Hey Miranda, been looking for some gaiters to add to my hiking shoes and wondered what kind you have! I love how colorful they are and have been struggling to find something I like. TIA 💗
I think the heaviest I've ever carried was a pack was 10 po. I think I consider myself to be an ultralight backpacker that was for 2 weeks thru the great Smokies
Rain myth no… it took me two years at 15 trips a year to finally get rain to test my tent, and I never packed rain wearables lol. Do you pack any cutting tools for more than one night? Saw, hatchet, something for fire fuel? Also is top poo okay? Everywhere here is a much deeper hole advised than what that is going to do
I loved this video! I learned a lot about how to pack properly and products that I may want to check out. What type of camp shoes do you have? They seem to pack down quite small (better than my crocs at least). Thank you!
One of them is a stretch mesh pocket that came on my pack, and the other is a phone pocket that I actually *made* - and the DIY for that is dropping this coming Sunday!!
There will! If you haven’t seen I have a couple backpacking trips recently uploaded - a long one in Utah with fellow UA-camr Eric Hanson and another solo overnight trip here in Washington. I just got back from another great backpacking trip and that video will land on the channel soon!! And even more coming after that! Going to be putting out mostly camping and backpacking content through the summer! Tons of adventures big and small in the works. Thanks for watching and being here! 💚
Is your tent sitting on top of your sleeping bag at the bottom? Or is the sleeping bag slightly moved so the tent is on the bottom of the pack?
The tent is touching the bottom, or very close-to! When I separate my tent poles and tent body, I'll also shove the poles down so they are touching the bottom of the pack.
With a heavier tent, I'd recommend separating the poles and body because just packing the tent straight to the bottom on one side could be uncomfortable.

IMO, The first thing that should go in any pack with any chance of rain or water crossings should be a pack liner. Even if the pack is waterproof.

Cosmic whimpout video 🙌🏼🙌🏼
The more time that we can spend with you, Miranda (and Rainer), the better!!! You are delightful!!! ❤😁
"More, please!" Thanks for another GREAT video!
What great timing! I’m literally packing for a week long backpacking trip and we leave tomorrow!! Thanks for all the great tips and tricks! 💫
You and Rainer make even packing up fun.
I have the same design as your phone case, but as a power bank! Also love the colors of your pack, more gear should be colorful
I agree!! I loooove rainbow colorful gear! I'll have to look for that powerbank - I love this phone case!!
i need to know what the container/bag you have the gummy worms in, that is so rad!
Would love a review on your Yonderwear!!
first comment glory! *Edit*. Just wanted to secure the covetted spot lol, thanks miranda for your awesome personality! Keep being unapologetically yourself!
Wooooo!!!
Edit: Aw thank you! I will 💚
On your next garage grown gear order get some hmg packing pods. I have 3 pods.
1 quilt
2 clothes
3 misc small items and ditty bag
Then my food bag.
My tent and rain gear goes in my big mesh pocket. If I think it will for sure rain I move my rain jacket to my left side pocket where my filter is. Right pocket has my filtered water bottles.
Edit i also put my chair in the big mesh pocket beside the tent.
The dice are a fun idea. Thanks!
I’m loving all of this. Just got to adapt it to the uk where I always have to bag everything in dry bags. Rain is guaranteed! So we always have to pack spare clothes as well. What do you wear to sleep in?
I love your videos! I can never decide if I should stuff my sleeping bag or quilt without a stuff sack or not. Next time will try your way.
I love your videos!
Question: where could I purchase the baggies you use for the gummy worms?! Looks like a smart sytem too!
Where is that Gummy Worm bag from? I've been looking for a bag that pops open like that!
Going on a 2-night hike this weekend, so this was great timing! And I love ❤❤❤ that pack - now I want one! (Like I don't already have a couple lol!)
I love you colorful pack!! Did you design it ?😊
I didn’t design this one! This is one of LiteAF’s patterns! You could get one too!
Who does the video production and the overlays? I find myself chuckling with every video.
What type of water bottle and filter? Do you not use a bladder? I’m new to all these and trying to figure out what’s best.
So jealous of your pack weight! Any chance you have all the items weight in a list somewhere to share?
So practical and helpful! Thank you for making this!! :)
We love Miranda so much in this household! Thanks for the video!
Aww thank you household!!! Love you back!
Thank you, Miranda!! 🎉😊
Woo you’re welcome Taylor!
What's the bag that the gummie worms are in?? It looks awesome
when I used the link for the backpack it only shows it in black, but yours is so colorful - is that one also available to purchase?
You guys crack me up! That was a super rad video. Learned a lot!
miranda seems like a really nice person
Hey Miranda, been looking for some gaiters to add to my hiking shoes and wondered what kind you have! I love how colorful they are and have been struggling to find something I like. TIA 💗
Mine are from UltraGam! I love them - highly, highly recommend, and they come in tons of fun colors! Check it: alnk.to/7BeGnAW
Everywhere here is a much deeper hole advised than what that is going to do
What’s the bag called the gummy worms r in. I need those.
Humangear silicone bag!! Check it out: alnk.to/h6FBQvu
I am loading up with fun stuff next weekend during the REI anniversary sale. Time to re-pack!
That's so exciting!! Yess the perfect time to repack!
Amanda, where did you get your colorful backpack? I clicked the link and it only had black. Thanks for the great video! I really enjoyed it.
I loved this video! I learned a lot about how to pack properly and products that I may want to check out. What type of camp shoes do you have? They seem to pack down quite small (better than my crocs at least). Thank you!
My camp shoes are the Teva Original Universals! I highly highly recommend them - the perfect little camp shoe. Check them out here! alnk.to/esWgz6d
@@MirandaGoesOutside Thank you for the 411!
I just tried lmnt for the first time and I'm shocked at how delicious some salty grapefruit water tasted! Thanks Miranda. 😊
Question, what is the pocket on your shoulder strap? It looks super handy!
One of them is a stretch mesh pocket that came on my pack, and the other is a phone pocket that I actually *made* - and the DIY for that is dropping this coming Sunday!!
You have such a happy go lucky vibe, great vid. Please be careful using your windscreen with a gas canister, it could explode.
I’m missing your camping and hiking videos a bunch. Hope there will be more soon.😊
Could you please include info on you water filtration system?
Any other lightweight games you recommend? Cosmic Wimpout looks great!
Jolly good video!
