REI please take the popularity of this video as a sign that we want more plus size options! It's nearly impossible to find plus size hiking clothes that are ACTUALLY plus size, and when we do find them, they're marked up 200% from what standard sizes have to pay ($90 for a pair of shorts). There's a HUGE market for reasonably priced plus size hiking clothes!

I'm really happy that Miranda reminded Pam that it's her first time backpacking when she was mentioning her weight. 🥰 People that are plus-sized are always thinking about how our weight limit us, forgetting that a thinner person could also find a similar situation challenging! A very wholesome moment. And also Pam, thank you for being brave enough to share your vulnerability ❤
Late to the party, but I have noticed that plus sized people are often in way better shape than skinny people. A new backpacker is going to struggle and it isn’t necessarily about the weight.
@@thisbeem2714 Welcome to the party lol! Thank you for sharing your thoughts :). I have a friend that is probably 100 lbs lighter than me and I can easily outrun her. "Whole finger or nothing!" 😂😂😂 I love watching your hiking videos. So many people on the trails are pretentious and try to pretend the climb isn't killing them. The honesty is so welcome ❤
I can’t figure out who I love the most - the trail, Pam, Miranda, the bunny, Amber at REI. 🎥😎💪🥾🎉🥳 all of it. Brought back lots of memories of my first times. My friend had to drag me a couple of times. Pam was much better! 10 years later I drag other people to scenic spots!
I love how the video is honest about the challenges heavier ppl face, hiking; it isn't afraid to show Pam getting out of breath & struggling. But it also shows how, with a break, a little patience + support from her companion, & her own fantastic attitude, she is able to recover & strike boldly out again. This is the representation we need. I hope Pam becomes a regular.
THANK YOU for taking a fellow big girl hiking! I'm big and I've had so many people look at me like I'm insane when I tell them I backpack, because they assume nobody of my size could possibly do it. It's so refreshing to see someone else backpacking who looks like me! 💕

@Bill Sbac There were two whole floors they didn't even show. It's like being in a Costco. (Which also started in Seattle. Maybe there's a connection, like all the rain makes our stores grow bigger...)

trekking/hiking poles would be a perfect accompaniment to those of us with a couple extra lbs on us. Saves on the knees and lower back. Great video on getting the first time hikers on the trail though. Appreciate your very approachable way of introducing people to being outdoors. Kudos to you and your team.
It was definitely a personal choice for me. Miranda did have some available for me to use, but I didn’t feel like I’d enjoy it or be able to keep my balance as well. I’m naturally pretty clumsy and I was worried I wouldn’t feel as steady with the poles. But maybe I’m wrong, and I should try it anyway on my next adventure!
@@pamlavallee9051 Before I got mine I tripped a... not insignificant amount, but having the poles actually helped me be more diligent because I was keeping an eye out for the best places to hit with them. I was descending a moderate hill with just the wildest amount of huge knotty roots and where normally I'd struggle, it was a breeze.
Poles really do help your stability. When you feel like you want something to hold onto to pull yourself up the hill poles help with that. You push up using your arms and legs. Need something to lean on mid stride, poles. Going down hill helps brace your downward momentum. A difficult rock or tree branch to straddle, poles. Crossing a creek, you can test the path ahead with the poles before you use your feet. At first it was a bit awkward (I broke a bone in my foot as a kid and had to use crutches, crossed them in front of me and fell flat on my face, sooo) knowing my clutzyness I practiced walking on sidewalk to get my rhythm, (with backpack on) then grass, then on hills, then on a sandy lake beach which included rocks and branches to go over. There are great videos on utube that can guide you. Finally they do help my knees. You feel exhausted and wobbly during and after, but.....so proud of yourself because you did it. Your lungs are clear your mind is open to the beauty and the possibilities. The stresses of the trail are Not the ones at home. These are ones you conquer one foot in front of the other. What a great friend you have. There is scientific evidence," out in nature" helps our brains and our physical well-being. Good for you. Enjoy your new found life style.

One of my all-time favorite Miranda videos! Love Pam! and yes, as someone new to all of this, hopeful but middle aged, I'd love to see more videos of taking newbies out.
It's always stressful brining a new backpacker into the woods for the first time but this was great to watch. Pam's enthusiasm is infectious and makes me want to hit a trail. Also, I know you two were college roommates because in spite of her clear fear of pooping in the woods, you bought chili mac. Exactly what I would have done to my college roommates! Lol
This was exactly what I needed to see. I realize you posted this three years ago, but my bestie and I went on our first backpacking hike recently and I felt like this sums up our experience as well. We did hard things, we had each other and we learned much about ourselves and each other. 28:05

Your friendship is so cute.
Miranda is such a good friend 🥺 it’s not often you come across people like that in the world anymore.
"Whole finger or nothing!" 😂😂😂 I love watching your hiking videos. So many people on the trails are pretentious and try to pretend the climb isn't killing them. The honesty is so welcome ❤
Being a 300# man of 53 I can really appreciate this. Thank you
Thanks, Donovan!
As a plus size aspiring backpacker, I truly appreciated this video! Added more fuel to my fire to get to backpacking
get out there and do it. start small and work up. you'll love it!
Having a friend to support you is the best
THANK YOU for taking a fellow big girl hiking! I'm big and I've had so many people look at me like I'm insane when I tell them I backpack, because they assume nobody of my size could possibly do it. It's so refreshing to see someone else backpacking who looks like me! 💕
Miranda and Pam are the best duo since batman and peanut butter I love this video so much more more more more!!!
More first timer videos!!! And they can talk about what they found out or what myths/fears were dispelled if any about backpacking.
First backpacking trip TOMORROW! This video couldn't have come at a better time to get me hyped!
have fun!!!!!
Ooooooo have a great time, one step at a time 🥰🥰
Hope you had a great time!!
“I can’t wait to pee on this!” 🤣🤣 that sent me!!
The Dynamic Duo!!! What a fun watch 😜!!! Congratulations 👏🎉 Pam!!!
I’m really glad that I stumbled on this because my sister wants to do part of the pacific crest trail next year and I’m a big girl who still has a hard time with up-hills. It’s good to see a plus sized person do these hikes.
This was my favorite video. I think people are scared of trying new things. I hope these videos show you can step out of your comfort zone and be ok.
more first-timers! wojooooo more people enjoying nature
Hi Nicole
Hi, please let Pam know, that as a fellow fluffy woman, I am so proud of her. She was magnificent!
This makes me wanna go out on another spontaneous backpacking trip
@Bill Sbac There were two whole floors they didn't even show. It's like being in a Costco. (Which also started in Seattle. Maybe there's a connection, like all the rain makes our stores grow bigger...)
Not only is that REI HUGE, we have several other good sized REIs in the greater Seattle area. It’s a great place for those of us who love the outdoors. 😁
It was so nice to hike with you guys, as a plus size hiker I was enjoying this immensely. Thanks you both.
This is exactly the type of video I like watching from REI
trekking/hiking poles would be a perfect accompaniment to those of us with a couple extra lbs on us.
@@pamlavallee9051 They definitely add stability. That's the reason I use them for winter hiking.
PS I loved the tent shake 🕺dance. 😀 great way to get the dirt out.
Pam has a great attitude, hopefully this was the first of many more to come
Canadians love Pam! She is a trouper!
Awww guys! I've been grinning since the start of the video. Well done Pam!!! I hope that was the first of many more hikes for you. It's a great hobby!
Hello Stephanie
@@ItsAStephanieB how are you doing, hope you are safe from the virus?
@@ItsAStephanieB same here , where are you texting from?
Ah, more gold from Miranda in the Wild. People identify with and enjoy this video for different reasons but let's be basic about it; this video is entertaining, inspiring, educating, and makes me want to go backpacking again with my friends dosh garn. Let's look forward to the good times!
One of my all-time favorite Miranda videos! Love Pam! and yes, as someone new to all of this, hopeful but middle aged, I'd love to see more videos of taking newbies out.
Hi Lori
Can i just say that, as a plus size hiker, I am happy to see another out there. This video was such fun, thank you both for your lovely selves.
You two made me cry. Such a wonderful friendship. Thank you for sharing it.
I love Miranda in the Wild! 🌱👁✊🏻💚💚💚🤙🏻🌲🏕
The amount of joy and pride Miranda has in her face at 24:18 is so endearing.
Hi how are you doing my friend
I am glad Pam and I had the same reaction to eating the biscuits & gravy. The little happy dance
1000 feet in 1 mile is amazing for a first time. Great job Pam!!!
I love the moment of excitement for seeing the snow covered mountains. I've lived in WA for 7 years now and it's still one of the most awesome sights I've ever seen. I hope to never lose that feeling
Nature is always showing us new views. We're sure you'll never run out of exciting sites to see! 😊 💚
Pammie actually looks refreshed at the end. I would look like death warmed over. 💕
She is glowing 100% of the time 🥰 - Miranda
Pam, you are delightful and it was such a joy to witness your joy.
Wow, this Video made me cry and laugh. Thank you for showing the emotional side of backpacking too, the worries, the exhaustion and the joys. I had a very emotional experience hiking uphill a few days ago and this makes me realize, that it's normal and fine.
Also, Pam is so likeable! Maybe we can see her in other videos, too :))
Yes!! I bet I can get her back for a round 2 😊 - Miranda
Pam is cool!
I’m not even halfway through this video and it’s the cutest, most motivating video!! 💖🥹
Bring Pam out for another adventure! Awesome watching 2 friends conquer the wilderness together! =)
So great to see someone going on their first hike yay you go Pam ❤
Nice job Pam and Miranda - can't wait for more episodes of "Miranda and Pam in the wild".
Way to go Pam! We are new to this channel our 2nd video was watching Pam. My husband and I think you both are so fun and sweet. Pam you are so positive. Yes more like this especially with Pammy 😊
Definitely one of my favorite episodes! Taking a friend backpacking for the first time will make great memories for both of you.
Hiking up a mountain
Humbling every time !!
Like many have already said, thank you so much for having plus sized person on the show. I really appreciate seeing myself represented. Pam is a badass. The whole piece of crying from exhaustion is so relatable. She needs to be on more often!
Hello how are you doing my friend
This is awsome! Also just have to say the bunny 180° is called a binkie it's a happy thing they do. My bunny Pluto does them when its food time and treat time x
Love this so much! :) Thanks, REI for being inclusive (and I love seeing that Gregory pack fit like a glove). Having packs in both plus-size and standard size is a GAME CHANGER! Happy trails! ❤️
Hello how are you doing my friend
I actually just found you & enjoy the enthusiasm & the videos w/ added things are fun to watch. I saw the other hiking w/ Pam planning the trip (more recent). Glad to see a plus size - like me. I call it a fun size when I’m able to do fun things. Thanks to REI for plus clothing!
This is the most wholesome display of friendship I've seen in a hot minute. Real friends give each other pee cloths hahaha
Wankered is a good Irish phrase…. Pretty much exactly as it was used! Perfect, Solid uses of good Irish phrases
Doesn’t want to poop in the woods!!!! Gets chili mac....
I DIDNT KNOOOOOW
@@pamlavallee9051 haha
@@pamlavallee9051 Never buy Chili Mac unless you are eating at home lol.
@@howardguillory3811 I love Chili Mac on trail but I also like being “regular” lol nothing worse than not pooping for a day then having to hike
😂 chili Mac. Add some hot sauce and boom trail lava
Glad to see people try backpacking and having fun in the outdoors. I have been backpacking for 40+ years and there is nothing better than a good night sleep in the outdoors.
Enjoyed the video!!!
We'd have to agree! Thanks so much for watching, Charles. 😄
This is definitely one of my favorite videos. My face hurts from smiling. Thanks for sharing your friendship and vulnerability.
Seriously enjoyed the wholesomeness of this video. Top quality content
I've been trying to get my daughter into hiking but she would always tell me she's to big. So I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Pam. After coming across your video I shared it with her. It inspired her to get out too. I pray that this will be the beginning of a healthier life. God bless and stay safe.
When you reminded Pam “…and this is your very first time doing this, your body can do amazing things”🥹🥹 all of us wanting to move our body more should remember that.
Pam YOU'RE AMAZING! I'm so proud of you ❤️ As a plus sized woman, I know the feels you had during this adventure all too well. Thank you for being you, friend 🫂
This is such a great hiking video. Hiking can be tough, tiresome, and all out draining. Especially for a first timer. Something keeps us coming back and truly loving it though. Very proud of your friend Miranda and welcome her to the club.
Pam, you killed it! I am 32 and just now allowing myself to be adventurous and enjoy the outdoors. I have let being plus sized stop me for way too long. I am so happy to see you out there in the wild!
I was incredibly nervous, but honestly this entire experience was so transformative for me as a plus size person. It was amazing to see what my larger body is capable of achieving!
I love, love, love that you took Pam! I'm a plus sized, older beginner backpacker and I cannot tell you how great it is NOT to watch some fit dude. Keeping it real and encouraging everyone to get out there! Thank you both 💚
Hello 👋
Bring pam again it was so heart melting to see real good hearted friends get together.i was in tears .
Loved the first episode of "Pam in the wild". A great episode to show to friends to get them to backpack. If the Seattle REI is considered a mega -version, then glad to know the Asheville NC is comparable. I believe Brits and Aussie viewers would bust a gut laughing about Miranda's alternate expression for "tuckered out"
Yep this Aussie thoroughly enjoyed that bit hahahhaa
Yup! That face Miranda pulled when Pam said "I wish to not die"? That was me.
In Britain w*nkered also means drunk.
Pam did fricking amazing, talk about jumping in the deep end! I’m a chonky lady into hiking, and holy crap the pack weight makes a HUGE difference. Something I could hike up easily knocks my socks off when I have a full wild camping pack (and cameras) on me. This was FAB and I hope to see more with Pam :)
Thank you for the kind words! Do you have any hiking plans in your future?
@@rei hoping to explore my local national parks soon before it gets too cold in the uk 😊
Pam, you ROCK!!! Way to go! Miranda, that was great. I'd love to see more videos like this.
Pam, you did wonderfully! Great attitude while being pushed beyond your comfort zone and your appreciation for the natural world is commendable!
I’d never been to the PNW before this trip, and I was constantly amazed at how gorgeous the scenery is! Backpacking was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I’m so glad I did it. Having an amazing friend like Miranda definitely helped.
@@pamlavallee9051 I'm a little older, heavier (lots actually) and a wee bit slower than I used to be. That being said, I've also learned that its about the journey, the scenery and the friendships- NOT about how far you can go, how much you can carry or how many medallions are on your hiking staff. You got all that on your first trip!!! I wish you many happy trails and adventures, Pam!
@@scottm6927 exactly! Miranda and I kept saying through the trip that we weren’t in any rush to get anywhere, whether we made it there in 2 hours or 6 hours, the destination was the same, but it was far more enjoyable to go slow and just enjoy the journey!
