    Very few guitars come from the factory in a "play ready" state. I own a music shop & even brand new Yamaha & Epiphone guitars (the main ones I'm a dealer for ) need some fine-tuning upon arrival; i.e. neck straightened, intonation adjusted, action perfected, etc. The guitar looked good & sounded OK. It didn't deserve to be tossed like that.

    I thought it actually didn't sound bad (through a $2K amp). Considering it hadn't been set up, had incredibly cheap, stock pickups (single coil, at that), probably old and cheap strings....and was only a $54 guitar. I'm sure the craftsmanship wasn't good....but the guitar didn't look bad, from what I could see. For a few bucks...and some attention....it might not be a bad knock about / backup rig.

      The chords sounding bad are indeed from bad intonation, I did not hear the guitar going out of tune, though if it did it would probably be due to the fact that is is brand new, not because of its price tag.

    Why do you test to see if it's in tune? Generally speaking, you want the companies to send a guitar that isn't in tune so there isnt much tension on the neck. If they sent you an in tune guitar, more tension is put on the neck, and it risks snapping when in shipping. So this guitar being out of tune is actually a good thing.

    • @Emptiness_Machine_2001
      @Emptiness_Machine_2001 6 років тому +6

      Matt Roome but to see if it is not in tune he has to test it anyway

    • @coreyblaisdell
      @coreyblaisdell 6 років тому +12

      Sending a guitar out of tune to avoid breaking the neck is actually completely unnecessary. Phillip McKnight did a video explaining this myth and why it doesn't make sense. Many high end companies ship guitars around the world completely in tune with no problems. Any companies that ship with loose strings only do so because they believe the myth that necks will break due to the tension.

      Regardless if it's necessary for shipping or not, who cares, it's a $50 instrument and it takes only a few minutes to tune. He could have made the guitar sound great if he took the time to fully adjust it up, but hey, that's not gonna get as many views as him shitting on it and throwing it on the ground like a troglodyte xD

    these guitars are for parents on a LOW budget whose children want to learn guitar. Saying that they suck is judging them out of their intended context. The brand is not targeting people who can already play to any kind of level- their inflated description is so that, upon examining their christmas present on ebay, kids are not devastated by an honest assessment of the product. does it make a ‘seasoned’ guitarist like this guy feel good to denigrate the low-budget option intended for children? ‘wow he must know a LOT about guitars’

    I've watched a TON of these videos comparing less than a hundred dollar instruments vs. same instrument in a over thousand dollar version. And all I can say are musicians are idiots. Unless you're on the radio, television, recording albums, or playing large venues, save your money. I've owned many different instruments myself. I have a violin valued at over $1000 and went on a trip where I ran into this girl that had a student model violin she got for under $300. I played it and it sounded terrible, but I knew the problem. Her bow was plastic and needed re-haired. I used my bow, and it sounded better than mine. And I had better strings. Musicians are all brand loyal, money burning idiots. I bought my daughter a high end Uke by Luna, concert size. I bought a plastic Uke for myself while drunk on-line. Concert size. The difference in tone is nearly unrecognizable. Intonation is fine. The fretted instruments do need to have good intonation, but if you aren't playing in front of more than 100 people do yourself a favor and don't fall into the snob culture. It's Capitalism people. They WANT you to pay more for something that isn't going to give you the extra you paid. I don't play in front of more than about 20-30 people and I would use that E-bay guitar in a second. (after I broke the strings in) Oh, and SURPRISE. New strings need a break in period. Now some people might be thinking, "what about durability"? For under $100 it's a disposable guitar. Plus I'm sure most serious musicians here have a horror story how the band's van got broken into, or some drunken guy at a bar spilled his draft beer all over whatever piece of expensive gear. That's another reason to play cheap gear. If you only play out at bars... Don't walk in with thousands of dollars worth of gear. Idiots man. Idiots.

    I bought one of these for $50 on ebay last week before finding this video- identical model except no manufacturer logo anywhere. Super light, maybe under 6lb. Spent 10 min stretching the stock strings, lowering the saddles, tuning and intonating - plays fine, everything works. Parts are cheap, but everything is standard Asian size. No issues with assembly and quality control is better than expected. Fat, lightly oiled neck on mine.

  • @maksqwe1
    @maksqwe1 7 років тому +7

    I used to deal with those types of guitars when I started out. After about a year, when I could actually play, I started buying guitars from eBay for example encore and some other no name brands to mod. I remember keeping an encore strat that I refretted, rounded the edges of the fretboard and did a proper fret level and setup and it was still my favourite thing to play like 6 years later. To be honest, that guitar doesn't look bad. The neck is at least finished in some sort of finish, it has a solid wood body and normal tuners. Some squiers have those shitty small hole tuners that they put in on purpose so that you can't upgrade them without drilling out the holes. I think the worst guitar I've had in to setup was a Lidl supermarket Strat. The neck felt like one of those cheap planks cheap bed frames are made of. No finish, splinters everywhere. Frets were literally falling out of their slots and the neck had a twist that made the guitar unplayable. No wonder kids quit if parents keep buying this garbage thinking "it'll do".
    Overall, from experience I can tell you that it's the shitty strings that are most likely making the guitar go out of tune. I would try a basic DIY setup, new strings and let it sit in the room for a few days so the wood settles on the new setup and then see how you like the guitar. If that doesn't work, id then fix the nut. Then tuners and bridge. But the cost of doing that will buy you about two more similar guitars. Maybe see how far upgrading gets you. Sometimes it's better to just buy another guitar, but some people don't have all that money up front, so could be interesting.

    The first thing I do when I put new strings on is tune them up to pitch, then bend each string two whole steps up, then re-tune, then bend another two whole steps up, then re-tune. After that I can basically do all the bending I want and the strings will stay in tune till they get rusted or one breaks, which is usually after twenty hours of playing, about one week.

Sometimes the transformation is incredible. Taking a cheap guitar and playing it unenthusiastically without doing a setup you'd do on a "real" guitar doesn't represent it well, unless the goal was to get some easy "well look how shit this cheap guitar is" kicks.

      I actually bought one, one of the Glarry strat copies off Ebay $55.
      I had some extra Dimarzio Pickups in my parts drawer and wanted a guitar to test them in. I'm thrilled with this guitar. The Stock pickups are pretty weak, but if I was just starting out they would be just fine. They are better then the MIM fender ceramic pickups that come in the $500 fenders. I know because I tried a set of those in this guitar as well. Holds tune great. the bridge is the weak spot, but you know that going in. It works...but. Neck is like a freaking baseball bat. Really a chunky neck, like an LP which is kind of odd, but no sharp frets. Guitar came with a very good set up. Don't forget to tighten the truss rod a little as they ship them loose. I got a sunburst and it is a one piece body that looks awesome. I had other pickguards on hand as well, So I put a new guard on it with 3 dimarzios (The Air Norton is amazing!) I think these guitars are a no brainier. Who cares if it is light? I like that actually, doesn't wear your back out standing with it. For $50, I'm thrilled with this guitar. Lost of stores sell them in differing colors, look for the ones that ship from NJ. got it in a week.

    Well as a beginner and as someone who doesn't have enough money to buy an expensive guitar right away, I would not throw away cheap guitars. They can be useful for learning and then you save up money to buy a more decent one. But I don't feel like buying a 7000 $ guitar at first. When I started piano lessons I had the stupidest little mini organ my uncle gave to me and I learned a lot on it, and after 2 years I bought my first piano. It was such an emotion touching a real one. It was a Yamaha. I feel like playing on that cheap organ helped me improve a lot with basics and I remember of it as being a sweet memory. I got the Amazon version guitar, and I hope to have enough money, if I become better at it, to buy a good one, but just remember guys that not everyone can afford expensive guitars. I myself don't for an example, so I do what I can to learn. Anyway I know they are not so professional but hopefully you will become better at it and buy a better one in time. That's what I do all the time and I feel like I can appreciate better the musical instruments that I have had during years.

    Bought one a few months back.......It has 22 frets. Very light. My neck looks maple. Not as dark as yours.
    Machine heads were okay if you stretch the strings well. Pickups were 3k with 220k pots. I put 3 chinese 500k pots and 3 single coil humbuckers in it.....okay now. Packaging was the worse ever but...I got lucky and it wasn't damaged. Whammy block was threaded bad for the bar....I just blocked it off into a hard tail. The paint cracked in a few places on the back but didn't make it to the front....used a tooth pick with super glue. Front looks excellant. Had to level and crown the medium frets...it's not perfect but very good after level.....you can only level so much on mediums .039. Mine didn't have a label on head stock! Yea! Definately needed a bone nut. The plastic nut was the worse I've ever seen. Like butter. With a new chinese bone nut it's great. I ordered 3 white single coil humbuckers from aliexpress. They were supposed to be 10-11k....were 8.6k so they refunded me everything (23.00) and said keep them. Great customer service....lousy sellers...don't cut them any slack! They're average pickups. Put DPDT switches on the neck and bridge pu's. Can switch between North single, South single, or humbucker. I have about 60.00 bucks in it. Nice guitar now! Frets had to be leveled and crowned. Only thing I would replace now is the machine heads....but don't have too.....it will play in tune even bending. Replaced the plug female jack too.....metal was too soft. That was 5.00 for an allparts one. I could gig with it......for a clean sound.

      Or the kid could have my Squier Strat. I don’t really play it that much except as a backup. Hate the flat fingerboard.

      Ryan Alvidres-Ivie got my lad a nice Washburn for £200 he didn't carry on playing and so we sold it. But at least he had a half decent guitar to have a go.

    I got a guitar that looks exactly like that but is blue and it came from zeny... and omg. On the day the guitar came it was an absolute nightmare... it was one of those starter guitar packages that came with a guitar,amp,cable, and strap for 99 dollars. At that point I already knew something was going to be fishy... an amp... and a guitar? 90 Dollars? My acoustic was 200 dollars and it didn't come with anything, except maybe a free pick. So it's Christmas morning... I open this thing and I'm so happy to have received it. Then I go to play it and my mood changes completely... the fret board cut me lol. While I was doing a barre chord. Then anything beyond the twelfth fret did nothing but create a buzzing sound... the high E didn't work at all. It wasn't till this Christmas that i was able to play it cause my mother was generous and decided to pay to get it adjusted, the fret board filed, the action to a comfortable place. So now its actually playable but the top pickup doesn't work at all neither does the one in the middle very well. Only the bridge. But if there's one thing I learned... It's never order a guitar online

      cause its new and the strings need to tight up

    • @aced1972
      @aced1972 7 років тому +2

      And on these guitars, once the strings are broken in there are usually a whole host of other issues that keep it slipping out of tune... Then a sharp edge from the 25 cent bridge breaks the string and you start over, and your basically tuning endlessly instead of playing, constantly tuning and breaking more strings, in the endless quest for your strings to break in-evenly and stay in tune. Then the guitar goes out of adjustment randomly This guitar was fairly in tune for a few seconds when he started the actual demo by strumming those single chords, and then it slid out horrendously by the fifth chord, the E minor. You can see his reaction, kind of like "that went south fast!"

      my 89 squier strat i found on facebook for $65 (with a 15W crate that needs repair)
      i sold a first act me302 (vaguely tele-ish style with a 3+3 headstock) for $25 (i paid $13 for it, not a bad guitar to be honest)... i don't recall seeing any functioning guitars for less but i have seen them pop up in the $40-60 range from time to time... usually off-brand/no-name cheapos

    Please be more specific - What is it that sucks? Is the neck ok? Are the frets level enough? Does it sustain ok? If the answer to all those is yes, then it’s already ahead of the terrible not-so-cheap guitar shaped objects which most of us had to start on years ago. Can’t the action and intonation be adjusted? I expect to have to do this on any new guitar anyway

    I’d be curious to compare one of these after a setup to what was an entry level guitar when I was a kid in the early 1980s. I’m thinking like a 1983 Honda strat copy (made in Japan) pretty much what you had there (except I’m sure your $50 eBay guitar was made in China). The Hondo starts we’re approx $200 in 1983, while other entry level guitars were a bit more. Oh, and to convert the $200 in 1983 to today’s currency, would be just under $500 in today’s money. So the entry level strat you got was approximately 1/10th the price of what I started with.

      To be fair, you need to have a high IQ to understand bad gear reviews. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also bad gear reviewer’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into their characterisation- their personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike bad gear reviews truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Ryan's existential chord progression “D A G Em” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Ryan Bruce's genius wit unfolds itself on their tv screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
      And yes, by the way, i DO have a bad gear reviews tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

      I'm not saying necessarily in your case. I buy cheap guitars and fix them up all the time. But the point of the video is the quality of the $50 guitar. The average person won't want to spend the extra money paying someone like us to fix it.
