[8 years later] Hello Fluff, this is Steve calling from Sweetwater Sound. We see that you purchased an Epiphone Les Paul SL some time ago, and well, just thought I'd give you a quick call and see if everything was still holding up. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to give me a ring at my extension and we'll get on down to it. Anyway, you have yourself a good one bud! Take care!
1: Locking tuners 2: Recondition the neck joint with helicoil bushings and grade 8 bolts replacing the wood screws. 3: CTS pots or the new Gibson pots they're using 4: New locking cable jack 5: New pickup selector switch 6: Graphite nut 7: Complete fret overhaul 8: Babicz hardtail bridge 9: We could go on for days about pickups, but replace them. Lace Deathbucker in the bridge and a Lace Alumnitone single in the neck. Or Seymour Duncan Blackout single coils. Or Dimarzio Tone Zone S in the bridge and a Sonic Ecstasy in the neck. Or EMG T set. Or Fishman Fluence single coils. Or... we could go on for quite a while. Of all the changes you could do, the one that will make the most difference is swapping out the neck for a baritone scale length.
Freaking LOVE Sweetwater. Back when hardly anyone had heard of them, my father was doing a guitar and dulcimer themed 'man cave' and I was looking for these wall mounted guitar holders that were 'floating' so you couldn't see any mounting hardware, and the guys at Sweetwater were amazing. They worked with me through the whole process, calling me personally and talking with me about my order and I want to say the dude's name was Ken, but he helped me pick out the perfect gifts for my dad's man cave music room. The best experience I've ever had with any online order. I've never had a company call me after I placed the order and just shoot the breeze with me about the project I was working on. Now, I have decided that I want to learn guitar myself, so seeing that there's a really decent one *on Sweetwater no less* that's at a really good entry level price point without being some total noname Chinese guitar that'll take an extra couple hundred dollars of work just to sound decent makes the thought of learning guitar a lot less daunting. I just want to pick up a decent guitar that will last even beyond the early 'just learning' stages and knowing that I can do it with a company I've already had a glowing experience with makes me even happier. As for your giveaway, I wouldn't even know where to begin when it comes to 'upgrades'. I'd say, whatever could turn that into a guitar I would want to still pick up after playing for 10 years and still enjoy it. Giveaway or not, I've pretty much decided that's going to be my first serious guitar so I'll probably be ordering one right after your giveaway if I'm not the lucky sumbitch lol. So I'm definitely interested to see what you do to it, because I'll probably end up making the same changes too as I learn to play, practice and get better and decide that I want more out of my first guitar
Whatever you end up doing, I suggest watching some of the videos that 60 Cycle Hum did on the SL to see what issues you're going to run into. Things you can fix without running into other problems: new tuners, new bridge, new wiring, new nut, proper fret dress and setup. If you want to change pickups, you're going to have to either modify the pickguard, or get a new one that's routed for strat size pickups. Well, really any pickups you choose at that point. Alternately, you could send the pickups to a builder and have them rewound to whatever specs you want.
upgraded tone and volume knobs, upgraded tuners (not locking, if i wanna play in drop D i don't wanna unlock it) upgraded nut, vintage strap buttons, polish the fret board and adjust file the frets. install humbucker 57 classic at the neck and DiMarzio classice at the bridge.
Putting an EMG in the bridge and adding a FR would be too much for a $119 guitar. The EMG would most likely require some additional routing (whether it be on the face itself or in the control cavity to fit the 9v), and putting a floyd in a non-floyd equipped guitar takes TONS of work, you'll need to route a solid chunk of the guitar out and don't forget to add a locking nut or you won't stay in tune.
Grover tuners(Black) Tune o' magic bridge & tailpiece (Babicz) Dragon mountian bone nut(dyed black) Seymour duncan sjbj-1 jb jr in the bridge(black),shr-1 hot rails in the neck(white). Carbon fiber pickguard(black or grey).

My salesman Dante calls every now and then and just shoots the shit with me, never even hints at a sale, now that’s good business. Now if I can convince my wife that I need more gear lol! Great vids man, sub and a like coming your way.

Absolutely agree with the new tuning nuts and the bridge humbucker. I've got a lot of love for the aesthetic of humbuckers, both sound and visual. That black satin finish is sharp, and won't show finger prints or dirt as much as a glossy finish would, so if you redo that, keep it subtle.
Hey dude, so I actually just got this guitar recently and I was really surprised like you. The first thing I obviously did was put some Ernie Ball Cobalt strings on it. Sounds and plays really good now.
I think the bridge is kinda neat. Would definitely love to see better pickups and a better nut. As far as the appearance: don't change a thing! I want this guitar, Fluff.
Lace sensor in the neck, hotrail in the bridge. Wire it all up through a Freeway 3b3-01 switch plus coil split on the push/pulls. 20 sounds at your disposal, from country to metal and everything in between.
Leave the body color black, paint the pick guard (any old color will do). Pick ups: Hot rails for the bridge and cool rails for the bridge. I've heard the necks can be a bit off, so I'd go polish and level the frets. Install an adjustable wraparound bridge, locking tuners, bone nut 500K pots. Win-Win..
Wow, what a coincidence, I was thinking about buying used SL that I saw on facebook market and adding a mini 59 humbucker on the bridge and a nice new single coil pickup on the neck then changing the wrap around bridge to an adjustable wrap around and maybe, changing the tuners ( depending on the condition) that is about it. Oh and adding a graphite nut. If the stock one is plastic.

Fishman Fluence Single on bridge. DiMarzio DP425 Single on neck Graph Tech Staggered Tuners. I love the white and black look, but also love natural finishes as well.
I have modded something similar. Dual rail at bridge- direct Seymore Duncan drop in available; there’s also a cheap Cinese dual rail that sounds good for less than $20 on Amazon; Piano bridge - direct replacement available no drilling required (Amazon); Tusq nut- direct replacement with minimal sanding and a tiny bit of glue. Change out pots and caps.( always do this anyway.)
push-pull pod for split coil at the bridge and a rail pickup at the neck. Grover 1:18 locking tuners. Change the pick guard to a chrome metal diamond deck relief.
I did this same project. Kept the bridge. Used locking Faber wrap studs, upgraded to $19 locking tuners from GFS, and left it stock. Thinking about going with Novak Melody maker sized P90s in the future.
Looks like it represents excellent value for money as it comes. Upgrades: DiMarzio Chopper bridge pickup, something complimentarty in the neck - push/pull tone pot for coil splitting... maybe chuck in an upgraded volume pot while you're in there. Locking tuners - Goto, Sperzel, or since it's a Gibson, maybe Grovers. A bridge with individual intonation adjustment - Hipshot baby grand or something similar. Can't wait to hear it when you carry out the upgrades you decide on.
A pair of black Duncan SL59s Push/Pull coil splits Maybe a Push/Pull boost or phase switch Grover locking tuners Hipshot BabyGrand guitar bridge TUSQ nut Upgraded pots and wiring Switchcraft jack and switch and maybe a custom truss rod cover for the hell of it, after that a good setup and some nice rounded frets and I heard these have lacquered necks so get rid of that too and satin it up. Keep everything else stock, its a great looking guitar.
Upgrades, I'de go with: hot-rail pickups (maybe the hotrail version of super-distortion in the bridge) or some DiMarzio True Velvet (amazing single coil imo) in the neck, better quality pots (maybe if you can find a way to coil tap a hot rail that too) and the cable jack just to make sure there's a solid connection (has been a re-occuring problem in every sub $300 guitar I've had), Locking tuners, bone nut, and replace the bridge with something you can actually adjust intonation with. Maybe add some VH style stripes in white to break up the monotone black. if the neck is sticky, sand it down to a more satin finish. Oh and strap-locks. Those are a must.
Hot Rails!!! Graphite nut, locking tuners, maybe a brass bridge? A good fret job, so there isn't any roughness on the edges. Strap locks.......CTS pots and vintage wiring, and a switch craft 3 way switch!
Mitch has called me personally before to check up on my gear, great guy!! Edit, got another call yesterday, it's been three years since I bought the pedal!!!
for Pickups: bare knuckle true grits Groovers in case of Tuners Bridge: abm 3024 na Warp around Some fancy New nobs Maybe Gibson speeds And change the Switch to the top (thats work nur possible)
ER Webster I got one fret work was sharp like would cut your hand bad grounding problem and other problems but can’t expect much for the price, it’s a lot of work to put into one , if you know how to work on guitars you have your work cut out for you
Scalloped on the last 5 frets fretboard/ stainless steel 6105 frets with a plek job and professionally edged/ Brent mason tri pickup set/ telecaster bridge/ and a b bender installed/ oh and high quality locking tuners with a bone nut/ sea foam green paint job with nitro lacquer
Upgrade: Tuners New Nut (Tusq or graphtech or something?) Bridge to a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. Neck to a Seymour Duncan Little 59 Pots/wiring (that's more a personal preference I guess) strap locks?
Hmmm, i kinda like it. I’m catching telecaster vibes from that thing...probably why I like it :) That being said, I’d like to see: Vintage three saddle Tele bridge (if possible) Upgrade the pickups to pearly gates (single coil version) Standard replacements of tone and volume pot Locking tuners Billy Gibons-esque pinstripping on the body, hand done by Fluff
I'm new here, but I'll throw in my $.02usd. Pickups: Stacked SC (HB) in bridge, a nice Alnico 3/4 in neck Strings: Nice set of coated strings (survive shipping / sitting in a box better) Nut: Graphtec TUSQ Tuners: Ratio Locking Tuners Bridge: Graphtec Resomax NV2 or NW2 Full / Proper set-up Fret Polish / Fret End clean up (if needed) Sanding (light) to slightly roll the fret board / neck transition (not so 90deg) Finally, Fret board cleaning/oil-ing and full clean / polish of the whole thing! (After thought... is the neck more natural/open pore or gloss? I'm better the former, so that's fine). No idea if this actually helps at all! Lol ✌🏼
My main guitar for the past 7 or so years has been an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra 3 with Duncan distortions. Only thing I've changed and it has never let me down.
I like the looks, too. That pickguard gives it a vintage 60's aesthetic. I'd put a Dimarzio Cruiser in the neck and a Lace Sensor Hot Gold Bridge in the bridge. Both with black covers. Other than that, I'd change the tuners to anything else that'll fit. I'm not particularly picky about tuners.
Route the body for a Floyd rose bridge and a middle humbucker screwed in. Keep the guard shape, but get it made out of copper or brass, distressed looked would be ultimate... for the wiring add an extra stacked pot for volume and tone and a kill switch. Now swap the tuners for something descent and matching with the colour of the guard (gotoh does that sort of stuff). The new pickup cover should also match the plated hardware, keep it clean and bob is your uncle mate.... a unique rock machine in satin black!
Switch the white plate top for a blue, add the beat kit you just slap on the outside, attach a GoPro for cool camera angle shots? Stick to a black and blue theme.
Things I'd do: Single sized humbucker in the bridge, locking tuners, an intonatable wraptail bridge in case you ever want different string gauges, and something more interesting for a pickguard. Maybe a brushed aluminum or copper or pearloid or something.
Looks: I think you don't need a new paint job, because it looks great! Electronics: definitely new tuners. And yeah, the single coil on the bridge didn't have that much punch, so definitely do something about that. Love ur vids fluff!!! Like for this dude, he deserves it! ⬇
Single-coil sized humbuckers, Neck Volume & Tone, Bridge Volume & Tone (I found some concentric pots and knobs on Amazon), adjustable stoptail bridge, and Hipshot 3+3 tuners (They come with covers so the origina tuner holes wouldn't be shown)
Seymour duncan vintage rails, new tailpiece(chrome), Grover headmachine(chrome), Cts pots, better pickup selector, shcaller chrome strap lock, D'dadario 010 strings and a nice fretwork and setup !! It would make that guitar play like a 1000 guitar!
Higher quality pickups, pots, switch , tuners, bridge and studs for it. I would sand and mold the heel joint like an Ibanez style and maybe glue it in like a set neck. I would also reshape the headstock and make it a Gibson style but the wood work is something that most people can’t do. I think you have the right idea of swapping out electronics.

Can't wait to hear it when you carry out the upgrades you decide on.
Upgrades?
Hipshot tuners
Hot rails
And idk, black hardware? But its optional.
Yap! I agree that!
A pair of black Duncan SL59s
Push/Pull coil splits
Maybe a Push/Pull boost or phase switch
Grover locking tuners
Hipshot BabyGrand guitar bridge
TUSQ nut
Upgraded pots and wiring
Switchcraft jack and switch and maybe a custom truss rod cover for the hell of it, after that a good setup and some nice rounded frets and I heard these have lacquered necks so get rid of that too and satin it up. Keep everything else stock, its a great looking guitar.
EMG 81/85 locking tuners and ur set!
81/85 wont fit
Yeah and plus it's a Les Paul. Put some passive pickups. Needs the classic crunch.
@@Shadow0fd3ath24 With a little imagination......and a dremel, anything's possible.
I think just upgrading the pups to some Duncans and changing the tuners for Grovers is all you need to do to make it a rocking guitar
Lipstick neck pickup.
Humbucker on the brudge
Fishman make singlecoils don't they??? ;)
Maybe a circuit that makes em sound like a humbucker would be an awesome update (like in the ibanez az series)
Also hipshot tuner and nubone nut
They do, but the SL pickups are smaller than strat pickups.
LOVE the look of that thing. The unfinished headstock is ace. It sounds perty darn good as well (props to the player of course!)
Dude.
Hipshot open gear locking tuners
Hot rails?
Graphite nut
Bigsby B5 Vibrato ❤️
Hot Rails!!! Graphite nut, locking tuners, maybe a brass bridge? A good fret job, so there isn't any roughness on the edges. Strap locks.......CTS pots and vintage wiring, and a switch craft 3 way switch!
Mitch has called me personally before to check up on my gear, great guy!!
Edit, got another call yesterday, it's been three years since I bought the pedal!!!
Yea, they’re pretty great with customer service.
Round off the fretboard edges, round off fret ends, upgrade tuners, upgrade bridge to intonable wraparound, upgrade pups (Seymour Duncan JB Jr/Little 59?).
You remove the frets and make it fretless, it will be dope bro
@N/A Of course i expected a failed tambourine player to say that
for Pickups: bare knuckle true grits
Groovers in case of Tuners
Bridge: abm 3024 na Warp around
Some fancy New nobs Maybe Gibson speeds
And change the Switch to the top (thats work nur possible)
60 Cycle Hum tried upgrading that guitar. Then they threw it off a bridge.
Ruben Perez about to say the same
Made at least 200 videos with that guitar.. lol
And then he ruined his H.B. Mustang and then the Red Strat. It's guitar abuse. Nasty and Rude comment 😡
Besides the pups, tuners and bridge . . Switch Craft output jack and selector switch. CTS pots, Orange Drops and shielding in the cavity.
How is the fretwork? Got to have comfortable frets to enjoy playing a guitar.
Well.
1. Looks sick either way
2. Any upgrades to this girl still makes it look absolutely gorgeous
3. Please enter me in the drawing..
@N/A just want a new addition.. Miss my collection, but I departed ways with a couple of them due to me moving out of my parents house 5 years ago
Stainless steel frets, graphite nut, locking tuners, stacked passive single coils, dual volume (screw tone knobs), +10db switch (for the lolz).
A whammy bar with Soviet red strings and Matt black tuner pegs
Tuners, tailpiece, graphite nut, single coil sized humbucker hot rail on the bridge. Wouldn't change anything else. That black is gorgeous!
"Scallop that fretboard."--Yngwie.
Upgrade:
Tuners
New Nut (Tusq or graphtech or something?)
Bridge to a Seymour Duncan JB Jr.
Neck to a Seymour Duncan Little 59
Pots/wiring (that's more a personal preference I guess)
strap locks?
Would you be able to do a binding around the guitar body ?
One of the most skilled, labor intensive things to do on a guitar.
@@216trixie Yes, this thing :-) he likes challenges ...
Hmmm, i kinda like it. I’m catching telecaster vibes from that thing...probably why I like it :)
That being said, I’d like to see:
Vintage three saddle Tele bridge (if possible)
Upgrade the pickups to pearly gates (single coil version)
Standard replacements of tone and volume pot
Locking tuners
Billy Gibons-esque pinstripping on the body, hand done by Fluff
Up next: I Got The Cheapest Guitar on the Dark Web!
Human bones guitar.
I'm new here, but I'll throw in my $.02usd.
Pickups: Stacked SC (HB) in bridge, a nice Alnico 3/4 in neck
Strings: Nice set of coated strings (survive shipping / sitting in a box better)
Nut: Graphtec TUSQ
Tuners: Ratio Locking Tuners
Bridge: Graphtec Resomax NV2 or NW2
Full / Proper set-up
Fret Polish / Fret End clean up (if needed)
Sanding (light) to slightly roll the fret board / neck transition (not so 90deg)
Finally, Fret board cleaning/oil-ing and full clean / polish of the whole thing!
(After thought... is the neck more natural/open pore or gloss? I'm better the former, so that's fine).
No idea if this actually helps at all! Lol ✌🏼
Wow what a shmexy looking guitar 👌🏻 I’ve always used cheap guitars and they’re so much fun! How do I enter the giveaway?
Active pickups locking tuners graph tech. Graphite nut . paint the pick guard satin red. Change the bridge
Stacked single coil ,
New tuners ,
Extra Light strings , a kill switch ,
Bridge change to bigsby , strap locks ,
And a sticker from your channel ...
a nice sticker is a great idea.
Strap locks, hot rails in the bridgs, CTS pots and input, new tuners, maybe TUSQ XL nut?
Fluff praising the cheapo Epiphone..
Fluff to Gibson confirmed.
Dun dun dun
Luke Robinett Haha, wasn’t terrible. Better sounding than the one I played in a Sam Ash. My comment was more of a joke.
Fralin P-90's! You'll have to cut the pickguard and route the body (but it will be worth it) 👍🏻
Route the body for a Floyd rose bridge and a middle humbucker screwed in.
If this dude had long hair I think he would be the next Zack Wylde 😂😂💪💪
Can't unsee it
Switch the white plate top for a blue, add the beat kit you just slap on the outside, attach a GoPro for cool camera angle shots? Stick to a black and blue theme.

Things I'd do: Single sized humbucker in the bridge, locking tuners, an intonatable wraptail bridge in case you ever want different string gauges, and something more interesting for a pickguard. Maybe a brushed aluminum or copper or pearloid or something.
Looks: I think you don't need a new paint job, because it looks great!
Electronics: definitely new tuners. And yeah, the single coil on the bridge didn't have that much punch, so definitely do something about that. Love ur vids fluff!!!
Like for this dude, he deserves it!
⬇
Single-coil sized humbuckers, Neck Volume & Tone, Bridge Volume & Tone (I found some concentric pots and knobs on Amazon), adjustable stoptail bridge, and Hipshot 3+3 tuners (They come with covers so the origina tuner holes wouldn't be shown)
Locking tuners, Fishman pickups, evertune bridge.... \m/ lol
No! None of that High Intergurity here
Locking Tuners, Tusq nut, some sort of stacked singles (at least at the bridge), complete rewire, new pots, new tailpiece!!
Whoa ! So you' can purchase a good looking guitar with 119 DLS?
Maybe some upgrades will do de job
Seymour duncan vintage rails, new tailpiece(chrome), Grover headmachine(chrome), Cts pots, better pickup selector, shcaller chrome strap lock, D'dadario 010 strings and a nice fretwork and setup !! It would make that guitar play like a 1000 guitar!
I have now claimed this guitar. It's mine now.
No.
Nope it's MINE!!!!!!
