“Netflix Face” is 100% a thing that I’ve never been able to put my finger on, but you nailed it! It’s “playing everything with a micro expression of boredom/disgust” Smashed it dude 🤣
i think Netflix face is just the hiring of teen actors based on being just good enough to act but also being attractive and marketeable, then they stay with those actors because its safer and easier to grow their stardom instead of looking for more actors who might have been better at acting.
The speech at the end made me kinda uncomfortable, I remember instinctively looking away feeling like I was seeing a stranger on the street throw a tantrum. But it made my girlfriend cry, so it does resonate with women apparently.
It's more just that I've heard it before so many times. The two same writers, Gerwig and Baumbach, have used the same type of speech in each of their movies before, "Little Women" and "Marriage Story" respectively. Nothing new was said here, even though it pretended like it was.
It resonates cos it’s a woman complaining about how it sucks to be a woman. It’s the same as that gym bro sigma crap you see on social media. It’s surface level heavy handed cope.
Watch Michael Knowles talk about the movie. The video’s called “I LOVED The Barbie Movie” and you only have to watch the middle part titled “Barbie is great.” It’s funny that this clip shows a bunch of Daily Wire hosts, but not Michael Knowles. Movie starts with girls no longer wanting to care for babies, they start killing their babies/abortion, no more nurturing, they want to focus on being girl bosses and Barbie can be anything. When Barbie meets the creator, she says women work here?, and the creator says “women do more than work here” as in they are also mothers like the mother character in the real world, a very important job, I haven’t seen the film but I’ve seen enough clips to understand people are missing some significant statements of the movie.
A thing that a lot of people ignore about the movie is that the Kens being essentially homeless and being "just an accessory" aligns pretty well with how boys are raised (which transfers into adulthood); their emotions don't matter and are actively suppressed ("stop crying, boys don't cry") *unless they majorly act out* (break shit, turn Barbieland into a Kenocracy) There's a reason that when homeless statistics are mentioned irl, they're always phrased as "can you believe it? 20% of homeless people are women!"
