- An update on what's happing with my Harley Davidson 1976 Shovelhead, 1976 Ironhead sportster chopper bobber, and 1994 Evo Heritage Softail FLSTN. How fats is my shovelhead per the rpms. New fresh rebuilt transmission for the ironhead sportster chopper bobber. Severe engine oil leak on my 1994 evo softail.

Shadetree tried running the Shovel from Cali to Fla. and 80 MPH just ripped the old girl apart...literally ! I think 70 MPH is the sweet spot on mine ,But that's just me. Thanks Corey !

I'm sure you know it's easier to leave pistons in cylinder and removing piston wrist pins when replacing base gaskets if your compression is good. Hope you don't say duh but I learned the hard way. Always good to have patient extra hands when you do it!
I've thought about doing it that way being that runs just fine.
No big if you remove the pistons, in fact if the rings are still good, grab a 3 stone honing tool, deglaze your cylinders and run em! I've yet to have any issues doing this. Of course %90 of people who've never even done this will tell you that you have to replace rings but you absolutely do not have to unless necessary. If a ring is good, it's good, period and if you have gouges in your sleeve, no ring is going to fix that.
I miss my shovelhead, a few pics and an oil spot on the floor keep the memory alive.

Hayden makes an Evo base gasket repair kit. It uses a brass tube to seal off the drain hole from the gasket, works great.
PS. Ironhead and Shovel sing like angels. If the angels had a three pack a day habit, but still, sounds awesome..😎
I did my 85 FXR engine and I put a product in call the oil fix. It's a brass nipple you put in the cases in the oil return hole, put the jug on, torque the head and no more base gasket leak on the old Evo. I have at least 30000+ miles and still dry.
A tip from an old school mechanic to get those brakes working better. Go to a music store and buy some Rosin(resin) that would be used on a violin bow. Warm up your brake pads/linings and rub some on. It should melt and be absorbed. Put them back together and CAREFULLY try out your brakes now. Rosin increases the coefficient of friction, hence its use on violin bows. You should see a noticeable improvement

good vid again! On my shovelhead I'm running 23-46 sprockets with a baker6, that's for me the best compromise. A friend of mine told me that the total number has to be unegal, so 23+46=69. So not you can fit 24-51=75 etc. The reason is that the chain will not come back on the same teeth again and give a longer life of the chainkit..?

i v rode same genney shovel all over in past 49 yrs. been a great machine 24 engine 24 counter shaft 51 rear cant be change on mine 11yrs. ago i up graded to a evo u can kill any machine if u don t take care of it HAPPY TRAILS

I often wondered about that where is The Sweet spot I think my Evo 2800 and I put a different tranny pulley on there I went up to a 34. Years ago when I had to shovelhead all they had was a 49 tooth so you didn't have any choice so I always put a 49 back there and it did quite well with it you know I thought I had plenty get up and go.
That was a good gas station at one time when the old man owned it there is a lot of meth in that part of Saucier
Seems to be a bunch heads that stop in there now too. It was a nice place when I first moved into my house back in 08.

Had a few cars and bikes where I only had tach to gauge speed lol. Had to use someone riding with me to tell me how fast we were going and memorize it. Josh and I had talked about riding over to Barber.

Great vid brother. Looking forward to seeing the work on the Evo soon. Question, has anyone else tried running ATF in the primary before? I tried it in my 96 Softail Custom and seemed to work really well, it's true that it's easier to find neutral too. I have since gone back to using normal primary oil but are thinking of going back to AFT again.
%99 of people generally talk about clutch pack engagement and chain wear, neither will be your problem and yes neutral may be a little easier to find which means you need an adjustment if proper viscosity oils are harder to shift but have you’ve ever seen a compensator burn up before? Lack of viscosity or proper interval changes burnt up my my brother’s SE compensator using ATF, though there are plenty who run it with no problems, I would never. Dino oil in the primary I’ve found though doing 100’s of primaries works best. YMMV. Always use factory recommended viscosity’s, your machine will live longer.
I always use an oil that's specifically made for a sportster primary/transmission. Whatever goes into it has to be comparable for the transmission and the clutches. Too thick of a viscosity will cause the clutches to stick, and too thin of an oil will cause them to slip.

ATF is a good cleaning agent, if not ran to long in the engine, Motor Oil, Gear Box, or Primary Case, even in the Fuel Tank it'll clean-up the top-end, with a ratio of about a thimble full to 4 gallons of good Gas (Non Alcoholic Gasoline) is best.
I have a friend that is a Master Mechanic, I bought his 1993 FLHS it had been sitting for awhile, Started right up, I followed his recommendations on keeping oil, filters, fuel, and general maintenance now for 3 years, runs Great, no problems as all.
Plug gapping tool on the handlebar! I had one as my key chain. 😂

Just keep the rubber side down and you'll be all right. I love tinkering with bike myself no better feeling than driving something built by your own two hands. You're a good brother with a good soul. I"m running a 49 teeth on my 81 FXE 80 inch shovel . Best change I made . Then 5 gal gas tanks .

My 83 FXWG is stock gearing. It likes 60 to cruise. I like 60 too, keep on the secondary roads here in Washington. Back when I drove home on leave, 55 was the speed limit.

Once in awhile my late 90s transmission of my Softail will not shift from first to second give it a moment and it will do it with a little help mainly in the morning when it's not really warmed up
Yeah, my softail does that at times too.
My 96 has done that before too, although it's been ages since it's happened.

upgrade the Shovelhead tranny to a 4 into 6 speed deal and then you will have a vintage bike that you can cruse America's highways and byways and probably do it without it hangranading itself.

EVO 84 to99 it works great on my 80 80 shovel heard tail chopper just a thought Like your bikes I have three running bikes.
instead of greasing those roller bearings- put the tranny in, and put the rollers in from the other side. Much, much easier
I think it’s pretty cool you owning all those bikes. I just got the one and it’s enough for me-but I’ve always liked panheads. My back is bad so I need a full rear suspension.

Please expound a little on setting the Shovelhead timing with a timing light. I attempted to do the same on my '97 Evo and it was, as you say, a mess and I was unsuccessful. I bought one of those plastic plugs and still couldn't see the timing marks through the oil.

I have travelled about 120,000 miles on q rebuilt ironhead, still has good compression and runs great....120,000 miles after a rebuild about 10 years ago.
Only been through tires, brakes, oil and plugs. Not reliable????? Bullshit!
Comfort is more important in highway touring as those Japanese sport bike shit will break your back during the highway touring

The front end doesn't accept the speedometer drive bearing, and neither does the transmission have a speedo drive gear. Plus I'm not anxious to find another transmission.

Nice job on the Iron tranny Corey, I would personally see why 1st is hanging up, shift drum moving out of alignment , fork hanging up on a burr maybe? I agree with what I would call "happy feet". My 2002 stage 4 FLHT standard will hold 100mph all day long but 85/90 is her comfortable cruising speed tops and depending on wind, maybe 80. You know your bike and each one is different but when she tells me she doesn't like something, I listen. You cold drive with your feet if you wanted, doesn't make it a good idea lol. I think too many people want to force things instead of just accepting the nature of the beast.
It's because I downshifted too hard too fast.

@@SaddleTrampTV i mislead you- not the primary sprocket, but your front chain drive sprocket. On my ironhead for example, I went to a 22 front, and it takes 65 on highway down to about 3000 rpms.

@@SaddleTrampTV darn texts, hard to say what I mean- I'm talking about both- you went down on the rear sprocket and weren't happy, and stated you were going back to the stock rear sprocket. If you go up 1 tooth on front, it will change the rpms/speed ration in the same manner as decreasing the teeth in the rear.- but less so- it might be that happy medium you were looking for- still peppy at start esp 2up, but also giving you lower rpms at highway speeds. I mentioned my ironhead as an example of how it changed it....sorry for the confusion brother.

Great Vid, Tramp..... Question..... the Shovel.... what's the displacement..... And..... as for the drive-dogs on the gears... Is there a chance that the clutch pack has 1 or more warped-steels between the friction plates ???
The shovel is an 80 inch. Unlikely there would be a warped plate on the sportster being it's a wet clutch.

New to the Harley world, I’ve seen people call hard tail sportsters “iron heads”, is there a specific ironhead? Or does converting to hard tail make a sportster an iron head? Apologize for my ignorance. Love your content!
No. The ironhead is the type of engine it is.

@@SirGuidemere91 Ironheads were made from 1957 till 1985. With the evo Sportster in 1986, they went to aluminum heads.

They're called Iron Heads because the heads were actually cast in iron as opposed to aluminum in later models when HD went to the "Evolution" style Sportster engine, I'm not sure what year that was.
The type of frame it's mounted in makes no difference.

I down shifted too hard while not rolling slow enough to go into a lower gear.
Ironheads are very easy to work on and too much fun.No fuel injection or computer and one carb.

I do not know of an easier. More basic bike to work on then ironheads...plus, once dialed in tgey are as reliable as a new sportster. Their hiccup has been electrical.. buy a cycle electric dgv-5000 and a dyna s ignition and you are done!

I just got a 72 ironhead. I don't know the last time it ran. My guess would be 10 years or more. It has compression and I could prolly get it going. But I think I'm gonna pull the engine apart and freshen it up before I even try to start it. I would hate to get it to fire and then tear itself apart. Is there any suggestions or advice you deem important?
As long as you know what you're doing, it's not a bad idea and wouldn't hurt to freshen it all up. Then you'll know exactly what you've got.
@@SaddleTrampTV I'm a mechanic by trade. I work mostly on Chevrolets but if I can build a car engine, I'd imagine with the correct manual I'll be good rebuilding the ironhead. I guess we'll find out. Haha. Thank you for all the great content you give us. I appreciate the knowledge you have shared.

I downshifted too hard while going too fast and got stuck.
@@SaddleTrampTV I had the same thing happened to my 90 EVO a few months ago. It hasn’t happened since but it’s kind of an uncomfortable feeling.
Why install a tach instead of a speedometer?
Don't have the means to make that happen, because of how this bike was put together.
