- Getting My POS Harley Davidson Shovelhead ready for an 800 mile roadtrip to Born Free Texas 2023 in Mount Enterprise, Texas. Decided what better motorcycle to ride to an antique chopper show/rally than on an antique piece of American iron; my 1979 Harley Davidson shovelhead with open belt, foot clutch / jockey shift, and kickstart only with points and condenser.

Prayers for a safe, trouble free ride. Just got home in north Georgia from riding to Houston. At 69 years old, I'm only good for 350 miles per day. Can't ride like I used to.
I hear ya man.
I know where you're coming from friend, as I am 68 now and I uses to ride 500+ miles easy just a few short years ago. These days I am worn out before 400. Degenerating dish in the lower Lumbar doesn't help much at all. But I enjoy riding my 1993 FLHS more than ever. Mainly because it's easy on the back, and smooth riding on the road.
Ride safe today, to ride another day tomorrow.
@@darknitethunder With empathy, welcome to the world of back problems. I have degenerative lumbar discs. Surgery two years ago . Took away the pain but left with weak leg due to nerve damage. But I refuse to give up riding until I can no longer climb aboard. Best wishes to you.
POS, Positively Old School.
I guess I should've watched the whole video before commenting, but to adjust the pushrods with hydraulic lifters, after you have all of the slack out between the pushrod and lifter, come out 4 1/2 turns and lock them down.
For solids, you want to just barely be able to turn the pushrods with oily fingers.
There are alotta tricks to running shovel engines.
Got it
Safe travels to y’all brother, have a great time and don’t worry to much with the ole Shovel,, it will get you there and back home.🧷
Prayers for y’all .
Cory, your right about applying silicone to transmission sprocket shaft flutes, I always let it set for 24 hours to let the silicone set up before filling the transmission, and also don’t over fill the transmission or you will be back to square 1 again. The old shovelhead transmission can be a bit contrary, but they will keep running as long as you keep oil in it.
I wish you and the Missus a safe trip, enjoy your selves and ride safe my friends.
As long as you have no leaks, good tires, good charging system, and new coil you be okay! I mean you know what your sitting on!👍🏼
Shovels are supposed to be weepers. It's part of their charm. Most of the fun is figuring it out. Have fun !
No matter what, enjoy your ride to Texas, have some faith in the Ol' Shovelhead.
I like hearing you talking about what Jesus said ! Love your channel bro ❤
Glad you enjoy it!
l had a cog let go on my 84 4 speed kicker... was easy fix only cause l got lucky & found the cog l needed be a very hard part to find here down under now days... good luck .... oh & lm about to replace the clutch pack on my 1994 FLSTN.. $420 for the plate's
.. cheers ol mate....
It's a bummer when that happens.
Leaving the comment before watching this video: Judging by the title your still chasing Gremlins, been there done that! I can't wait for the day when you realize the Shovel is sorted out and you make a new vid showing how much you love this bike! Going to watch this vid now.... Watched and all I can say is this whole scenario could have been filmed in my garage! God Bless
There light at the end of the tunnel coming I'm sure. Thanks
Yeah man its good to watch your home movies Im 56 and I have only just started learning about my ironhead Always fixing something generators gear box 1st gear problems etc etc Got her when I 50 I mean to say she is always in the shop hrs and hrs of work But its so great when every is working right Potato Potato
I used tall kitchen trash bags as saddlebag liner to keep everything dry.
We normally use the big, heavy-duty lawn bags.
What she said
Another good one 👍👍
Ride your shovelhead regularly. You'll get to know it's weak points. I sold my twincam and now I have 2 shovelheads. All you need is a basic toolkit with you. You should know what to bring by now. Go for it 👍
Hey Cory, Gary Barker here, just south of you in Long Beach. I'm planning on going to Born Free also. This will be my first time and really looking forward to it! I've been fighting cancer for the past 3 years and I'm not ready to ride a bike that far, so I am going to trailer with my RV. I'll look you up, see you in a few weeks! And by BTW I am building a 1967 Harley FLH. This will be my 5th Shovelhead over my years and can't wait! I will be bringing my 46 Indian and my brother riding an 81 Shovelhead. If you need me to haul anything for you, I can do that!
Thanks, man.
we are thinking about going to Born Free Texas next year.... just not enough time this year...
Safe travels 😎👍👍
Great video. Hope all goes well. Stay safe my friend.
Best of luck. Always carry tools and be prepared for plan "B".
Loving it all.....keep on keeping on.....
These kind of videos turn more into life videos than motorcycle videos, but life with motorcycles is better than life without them. 😁 Hope you make it to Born Free. Stay safe regardless. Garage is looking good. Almost have enough bikes to start a gang!!! 😆👍
Lol... a gang huh? that's funny.
I'm goin. Hope to see you there.
Awesome!
I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the guy with a beard a Harley and a leather jacket.
Wanting a shovel. Hope you get yours sorted. Thanks for posting.
You are always intertaining with your videos you reminded me of a guy I new once he wasn't happy unless he was creating work on this bike. I agree with another comment have the wife follow you with a trailer and she can see the parts fall off and stop to pick them up. Got a feeling we will here how this trip was let's say interesting. Good luck with the trip sounds like your gonna need it.
😂
Man you got some great music!
Thank you, Troy!
Corey, I sure hope you make it! Thanks for Sharing!
I hope so too!
Richard from Az,,Tramp love your videos be safe on you run to Texas you an yours
Thanks, will do!
Good luck with finding all the problems I’m getting them fixed. Have a safe trip to Texas. I pray you make it safely
Thank you, Steve
Man I love keeping old iron on the road. The Texas Serenity Run is coming 24th thru 27th in San Antonio. Be safe out there
Safe travels!
I like to go with solid steel chains because they don't stretch as fast as O Ring Chains but you have to keep them Lubed up big time....
Love the shovel always wanted one good luck
Stay safe brother
As always,Thanks for sharing!
No problem 👍
Hey Man, I'm thinking about doing the Belt to Chain Conversion on my H-D FLHS mainly because, if Ya break a belt going down the Hiway your done (outside of calling for a Tow). At less with a Chain, you have a good chance of repairing it with a Master-link. Compared that to a belt, to my knowledge that has no repairable fix out there on the road. Just like an old timer once said "Belts are meant to hold your Pants up".
Ride Safe my Friend. I might see you in Texas.
Right on, man!
I've been looking for videos like this! Ready to chase my dreams! - "Every challenge is an opportunity for personal growth.."
Ride that Shovelhead. Keep safe as you do!
Thanks, man....great to hear from you again!
Good video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Passionate, persistent and patient... you are a good man my friend. Keep the faith.
Thank you. I'm trying.
Sounds like a great trip. Always enjoy your videos. Especially since I’m trying to learn more about working on my bike. I have to replace the rocker box gaskets as a winter project and your videos always give me the confidence I can do it. Take care✌️
Glad they help, man.
That tranny leak is so common it is a pre 5 speed rite of passage. More times than not it is the seal spacer that is worn. The older 4 speeds had a notch on the spacer and a clip that went into the spline of the gear to keep the spacer turning with the gear. You can silicone the spline but that doesn't work for very long. Good luck and remember if it doesn't leak oil a little bit it doesn't have very many miles on it. Good to hear from you and God speed my friend. Later.
Yeah I know. These cowpies don't have the notch like the ratchet tops which makes them a little more irritating.
The Shovel will get you there and back no worries. Keep her under 65MPH and keep a quart of oil on board. You’ll have a good outcome. Good luck and enjoy the ride.
Will do. More like 2 or three, and a few extra nuts and bolts.
Good luck🙏on your trip on the old shovel!! It’s always a roll of the dice…. Ride free 🇺🇸
Thanks 👍
Seems like you might be building pressure in trans...??? Might be worth a check re: venting ... cork seals = oil / fluid soak or sometimes will eventually seal up after expanding from whatever initial oil weep if installed dry ....>Oh no ...venting trans, soaking cork, going in dry...someone might get offended ? .... 🤣😁
Perhaps so
@@SaddleTrampTV A bit of garage humor helps maintain some form of sanity when turning wrenches....
Good to see you back, I'm building a trike out of an wrecked 1979 Jeep (258 engine) and an old aluminum boat so I feel your pain. P.S. lots of wrench warts. - God Bless - Lefty
Man I wanted to 👍this video but it was siting at 777 likes just couldn’t bring myself to kill the mojo!
Hey Tramp, really enjoy your videos! wish you could put out more of them,. But I know, life happens. Don't ever think your videos aren't interesting, I find them useful & informative! Keep them coming brother.
Thanks, Brian
Take a support vehicle that can carry it or trailer it. Enjoy it at the event and try riding it back. Anyone that's owned any of the "heads" long enough know that they like to play games with your patience and sanity. You do you though. Have a good time!
Thanks for the update on what all is going on with the shovel. Hope ya'll have a great time out there in Texas!
We'll give it a shot.
Gonna miss you!
@@themissuscostelli497 going to miss y'all as well.
If you want to repair old leather using lacing instead of stitching, they make eyelets that you can install yourself to keep the leather from ripping.
Have a safe trip.👍
Thanks for the info!
You got this! Well stocked tool bags and extra bolts and loctite lol! Have a blast at Born Free. Now i’m even more upset we can’t go this year 😔
Awe bummer.
I'm learning a lot about shovels for when I redo mine wish I could make it this time
We’re seriously going to miss you!
Dang the Luck Corey... Happy for the new video. My Sportster is coming along. Saddle Tramp is a BIG Inspiration for me. Let us know in upcoming video's if yal are going to Tampa in March. Talked my girl into going. Again Safe Travel's.
Not this time around. Shooting for March 2024 though.
You got this man!
Hope so. Thanks
Hi Tramp, another good video from you sir, keep them coming. Good luck with your trip, look forward to your next video. Does Scooter's have a website? 🇮🇲
They don't. 228 832 7444
Keep up the good vids brother, your effort making them is always appreciated even all the way over here in New Zealand.
Nice to know, my friend.
Ride safe to Texas brother👊🏽😎
I'll give it a shot. Thank you, Dan
I'm telling you that it's bound and determined to push you to the point where you tear it down and rebuild and build it your way.. I think I heard it say that it was a 20 over sugar bear springer with a king and queen seat, etc!!! Also I would almost guarantee that if you reached out to TC Bros and asked if they would sponsor your channel they would certainly be willing to help out..
It looks like I'm getting to the point of doing that after noticing that the tip of my front exhaust is a little wet wit oil.
Good news about the oil leaks, you rarely ever see a rusted out shovelhead😂😂
Lol
Dude, it seems that most of them braided lines from the case to the rear rocker box are not the best quality. I ran into that issue many years ago. As far as the lifter bases, always use fresh gaskets. I'm not saying that they'll always be leakers, but they will be weepers !!!!
I'll be looking for you.
Better man than me ,will stick to Evo's
👍👍👍
I assume you are using corks..... if so, soak overnight or at least a few hours in antifreeze or brake fluid.... it softens the corks and allows a firmer indent from the tubes
Actually using rubber gaskets. They work pretty good too. But like any thing else, they have they're expiration.
Im Glad Iwas Born 69 yo ago
The tranny countershaft is supposed to have app. 1/8" of solid shaft sticking out of the transmission case for the seal to seat on before the splines start.
If it doesn't, there's a problem.
If it still leaks, the shaft may have wear in the area that the seal contacts, and this will result in seepage.
So, since the last episode, you've upgraded from Windows POS 1.0 to 2.0? 😅
And I've only heard you say you want to get to Texas. Nothing about getting back. Maybe you could sell it for another project bike.
Perhaps!
At some point it'll be a new bike again
Eventually
drain all oil from trans put in 14 oz of heavy weight gear oil no more than 14 oz
"Get a newHarley" And while you're at the dealer look back in the shop at all the new Harleys getting worked on.
Lol... that's funny
That's the point! If your gona ride a shovel you gota no how to work on them. Or learn, then your proud as you roll down the road knowing in your mind you fix it you no what it's doing the noises it makess its an intimate relationship ,is it dead reliable for 50000k miles with not a peep like a tc nooo , that's what there for Maybe 5000k and thats good ! Locktight tools Zipp ties tape plugs bailing wire yer set god bless
Matthew 9 Verse 16 NIV.
Your shovelhead final drive ratio original 51/23??
Think so. Right now it's 49/23.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
That would be nice
👋👋🇺🇸😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
POS ? Ifin you don't want it I'll take it.
Just a term of endearment.
Take the tramp the shovel will leave you stranded I hope your not superstitious 😄
I've already done it on the Tramp. Now I wanna do something different.
Late again
All good, man!
It's a piece of shit shovel because of the mechanic. You haven't figured that out yet. Let it go. You're doing that shovel harm through the right thing. Give it to somebody else who gives a shit
gawd
Thanks for watching. :)
Yup! Never ending lol. My 93 solid mount 131” Evo Fatboy is constantly vibrating parts off. The other day I saw something bouncing down the road and couldn’t figure out what fell off. 🤔 It was only my top engine mount bolt that came loose even with a lock washer.
She’s going up for sale, bike is too violent and ungodly fast. Physically beats the snot out of me when riding it. Riding my 02’s even though built and carb’d, feel like brand new machines compared to the Evo. I’d like to try an 80” in a 1996 or newer. I know the whole vibrating thing is cool but it gets to a point where it’s too much. I can’t let go of the handlebars without death wobbling from vibrating lol, not fun.
have a good ride, man. been meaning to ask you, how are you liking the jockey shift and open belt setup?
p.s. love the matthew 9: 16-17 reference regarding your saddle bags.
Taking a little getting use to, but a lot of fun in the mean time.
so, does POS stand for 'pretty outstanding shovelhead' ? 😂
Ummmmm.... Sure! Lol
