  • Just an update on what's happening in the garage. It's seems having so many Harleys can add up to too much drama of maintenance and repairs for an ironhead, shovelhead, evos, sportsters, softail, and choppers.

With those solid lifters you will want to add STP oil additive only because it has a Very high zinc content, I use it for breaking in engines but with the solids you NEED a higher zinc engine oil, try that I bet it shuts it up some, my 91 evo I changed the entire top end with all S&S components but the pushrods I got, not really too happy with, they're revtecs, they're ok, but once they're adjusted I have the same problem with movement

I'm telling ya man get a HRS40 for your sporty and a 42 for your big twins that need carbs. Buy a aem air/fuel meter weld a O2 bung in the front pipe 18" from the engine. and rear your air fuel by the gauge. Stsrt with wide open throttle (main jet) then cruise (needle highth) Lastly off idel and low speed (mixture screw and pilot jet) You want your idle screw to be turned out about 2 to 2.5 turns If it is under 2 go one jet smaller over 3 go one piolet jet larger. Do the rest by air fuel reading. I've probably tuned 35 or more bikes this way over the last 20 years with no complaints as well as my onw street and race bikes with great results

Back in the day, I was having carb issues and all I did to fix was; check the float valve adjustment with the bowl off. Just slowly lift the float, and see what level the float is at when the float valve starts to lift off the seat hole. You know! (Float adjustment tab too low - it'll starve the engine!
Too high - it'll flood it.)
    Hope that helps!
I nowadays own a fuel injected TC-88 on an 05 Road King Custom and a fuel injected 1200,
    08 Sportster Nightster!
But those F.I. bikes fuel delivery cannot be adjusted without a Dyno
or unless I buy an electronic fuel management system, for them. But they run great, so I just leave them alone in my senior age and just ride!

I've been running solid lifters in my 91ci Shovelhead for 43 years....you do know hydraulic lifters require a different cam than the solids....check with Andrews/ check a parts catalog example Andrews B grind(485. lift) solid lifters BH = hydraulic lifters....I have an original cam from Tom Sifton 485 lift it's for solid lifters....the B grind is a good choice for street use...

Corey, after rewatching this video, I wonder if you may have some water in your gas with the Iron Head and The Tramp suddenly having the same type problems when they were running well before. I wonder if your most used gas station has underground fuel tanks, which can leak water into the tanks. When I was a kid, we had a local store that had to go to above ground tanks because their tanks had accumulated so much water over the years that people quit buying gas from them. My neighbor was burning leaves and filled his gas can gas cap full of gas and when we threw the "gas" on his smoldering fire, it literally put the fire out! Lot of hammer-yammering to say maybe buy a gas can full of gas somewhere different with above ground ethanol free tanks and drain the tanks on one of them, maybe the Tramp, since you think you might have intake seal problems and see if the "good" gas will solve your troubles. Also, try a gas cap from one of your scoots that runs smooth on the Tramp and see if it is a venting issue. One more thing to check is the petcock. I almost pulled my hair out with that awful vacuum petcock. Sometimes it worked great, sometimes it choked my motor to death. I would think the Softail has a too-high float level or a bad needle and seat. You probably have thought of some or all of these things, so don't take this un-asked for advice the wrong way.......This is the only good advice that I can give you, from personal experience. My advice is pick the easiest one and work on that one and don't touch another bike until you are happy as a clam with THAT bike. That will get your spirits boosted up and you will feel a sense of accomplishment. Then pick the NEXT easiest problem and don't work on anything else until you feel all warm and fuzzy... Before you know it, you will just be down to maintenance instead of repair... And maintaining that whole shop-full of goodness will ALWAYS keep you busy... in a good, non hair-pulling -out way. And don't forget to ask Him for guidance and a calm spirit while you're working on your stable of scooters. Take care, Tramp and The Missus! :)

Try loosening your gas cap on the sportster when it feels like its losing power. If the bike starts to pick up power, replace the gas cap. That is a common problem on old bikes. The gas caps vents get clogged and reduce power.

Look at the bright side. You don't have to deal with EFI. I've had almost 50 carbureted bikes in my life, and they all run/ran fine. I have a 1989 FXRS Low Rider and a 2002 Sportster 1200, both run great. On the rare occasion when I did have a carburetor issue, it was always very easy to track down and fix. My nearly new EFI Honda has been at the dealer now for six weeks, they have yet to figure out why it won't run. If/when they fix it, I'm probably going to sell it. I can see it being a very expensive nightmare when the warranty runs out.

I feel your pain because I know the struggle. On your Shovelhead lifters check to make sure the lifter blocks were not plugged. Some guys will put a set screw in the oil galley to block flow off when running solid lifters. On the Ironhead, maybe try putting a little more advance on the timing or check to make sure your advance weights are working properly.

Have you tried rocker lockers, the rocker shafts are machined out way to big and like on most twins with similar set up they tick like that. Rocker lockers fixed mine.

Never heard if them. Thanks for the info, Tom.

@@SaddleTrampTV and I bet anything you put in there to scotch the over machined mark on the Rocker shaft would work, I tore down a shovel 4 times over 29 years ago looking for that tick to find it was nothing if consequence but easily fixed. It usually shows up after a rebuild or upgrades . My twin cam started doing it after I put the 110 tire shredder kit on it . Next time I go into the Rocker box I'm gonna put Rocker lockers in it, but not gonna tear down a Rocker box that isn't leaking anywhere .

    I'm curious about the shovelhead.
Are you running the stock oil pump?
I had to get a higher (flowing) oil pump for my 78.
(Not a higher pressure oil pump)
I'm not a expert by any means this what my mechanic advised when mine was done.
