I stopped getting excited for anything sims 4 related. It's a shame, because I really like the way the game looks, how well it runs, the convenience of the gallery etc. But the gameplay is so boring and shallow I just got fed up with it. Recently I went back to sims 3 (it's the game in the series I played the least because of the lag) and decided to fully embrace it, pudding faces and all. It feels so much more alive, sims 4 doesn't even compare.

@Jammy Jim well my personal opinion is that I like the Sims 4 a lot and play it every day. My critiques are that the sims are a bit bland, there isnt a lot of challenge/danger, and the packs are very empty. If you played Sims 2 or Sims 3 you would understand why it is a very marked disappointment. To go from having all of those things in the franchise to then EA taking over and basically cutting down the core elements of the game that had always been there + putting a new team on development.... Yeah it's kind of upsetting. Every one of us who criticize the Sims 4 do so for it to improve and also because we know what we as consumers deserve because it's what we've been given in the past. We see right through pretty much every excuse and aren't satisfied with them bc it's like, "so the Sims 2 devs could do all this in 2000 but you can't do one simple thing twenty years later?" If you interpret us as attacking core elements of TS4 maybe that's even further proof that there is something deeply wrong. As far as lifestyles and what they're adding, I'm glad that they're expanding but also please keep in mind sentiments are not the same as memories. Lifestyles are something I am looking forward to. Again, I play this game every day and have my own save file + legacy families. I do love this game. I also have valid critiques for its improvements that I as a paying consumer have a right to have. I paid over 400 dollars for every pack because I'm a completionist. I had BETTER be allowed to give my opinion and see it being IMPLEMENTED for over 400 DOLLARS. I am absolutely entitled to that.

I've said this before but it still applies: I'd say that the biggest problem with this EP is that it doesn't expand shit. The best EPs have a central feature; Seasons had seasons and the calendar system, weather, and other features tied into it; cats and dogs had cats and dogs, City Living had apartments and was built around the sense of community, Get Together was about getting together and social interactions, you know what you're paying for. But just like Island Living, there isn't a central feature that you get the pack for. If you think about what you got Island Living you would struggle to think of a feature because the biggest feature (conservation) probably isn't why you wanted it and all the other features were underdeveloped because they weren't the selling point, for most people the world was. It's the same here: what's the main feature? Skiing? Snowboarding? A spa object? Kitchen counters? There's nothing there that expands the game. People want it for the world and odd features like they did with Island Living but there's no central feature and it'll get boring real fast, like Island Living. Hotels should obviously be that feature.

Honestly as someone who is very familiar with Japanese customs and traditions, I'm very nervous how they'll be handling certain elements in gameplay, mainly with the kotatsu and onsen. I think, based on the gameplay trailers we've seen, that it will literally just be an object with a single function for having a hot pot on it, and nothing else, when in reality a kotatsu serves a huge variety of purposes, most of all being to keep your feet and legs warm in the winter. The onsen thing is also a little worrisome because as you said, just because the trailer mentions "Follow the rules!" doesn't mean there'll be an actual way to enforce that, which is very sad. Onsen culture is a HUGE thing in Japan, and if I had to guess 99% of simmers will just ignore the "rules" because all they see is a hot spring, when in reality the main reason the "rules" are in place is for hygiene and safety. If there aren't actually rules in place for something they're trying to portray accurately, then just don't call it onsen. Call it a hot spring. Make up your own name. But don't try to pretend you're representing a very important cultural practice by just slapping it in your game without following through on teaching people to respect/learn about it.

      2) No tattoo. Those sims with tattoo should have a designated onsen for them .

When it comes to the personality update with Lifestyles, I really wish they showed more about the sentiments. Just from what I read about it, it seems super interesting. It almost sounds a bit like memories, since both sims will have a different outlook on an event (like a date for example) based on their traits. Plus, your sims can bond over things like that. But yet... nothing about it in the gameplay trailer?
As for the skiing and snowboarding I read an article where it mentioned that there isn't "set" paths and your sims will actually choose their own way down the hill. I am hoping that will keep that type of gameplay fresh and make you want to contiue it more than once.

Personally, I do like the idea of conflict in these lifestyles. What we’re missing in existing traits is that they’re almost all positive with no negative version (like how in the Sims 3 they had likes/dislikes supernaturals, love/hate the outdoors, and many other examples of this) so I like that we seem to be getting that here. Also SimGuru Graham confirmed that you can lose lifestyle if you don’t keep up practicing them, which reminded me of the hobby enthusiasm system in Free Time. However, I do worry that these will only be in name and not impact gameplay, or that it will simply affect the buffs you get and not much else. The same with sentiments; I want to see conflict in lifestyle or sentiment have long term impacts on relationship rather than decreasing your relationship a little bit and nothing else happens. I want to see fury, wants, fears, chemistry, memory and true impactful traits and what I see with this pack is a foundation for these, but it won’t do much if they treat as if they gave it to us here and choose not to elaborate in further packs/updates, especially when you consider that they will not expand lifestyles because they’re exclusive to this pack.

One good thing about this is that It's been revealed that you will be able to place rentals outside of vacation worlds, so for example you can have a rental at willow creek etc. About the personality stuff, stuff hasn't been fully revealed yet, it's just a video and we might not know what the personalities actually add, It might be ok, it might be terrible, I saw this quote some minutes ago on a website "This new update comes with improved depth to Sims in the form of Lifestyles and Sentiments. Lifestyles are based on a Sim's experiences and behaviors and influence what a Sim will do when fully autonomous and how they will feel in certain situations. Lifestyles include things like Workaholic, Frequent Traveler, and Adrenaline Seeker. Sims can have up to three at a time, and as their habits change, their Lifestyles will also shift. Sims can also change their Lifestyle using a reward potion or by calling a lifestyle coach. This feature is currently exclusive to the Snowy Escape pack. All players will get the opportunity to experience Sentiments, though there will be expanded options if players opt for the DLC. Sentiments are feelings different Sims will have about shared experiences. While one Sim might reminisce on a moment with fondness, another may become sad. Now, when Sims share time together, the moments can mean more and affect their moods later on."

Like, at one point the voice over said something about "put away the camera and no selfies", so if you take a lot of pictures, you'll get 'likes electronics' or whatever, if you don't, you won't like them... each will make you more likely or less likely to pull out your phone. And the family one might make you more or less likely to interact with your family members. While that does sound interesting, it's still not enough to make a real impact.

We already have those lifestyle traits in The Sims 4. They are already there in CAS. A sim with the CAS Energetic trait will, of course, unlock the energetic lifestyle trait. But the question is: how is it going to change my sim? Will he be even more energetic? Will he not sleep for 2 days straight? WOW!
Will a lazy sim unlock the lazy lifestyle and not get out of bed for the rest of his life? WOW!

I speculate that these hidden ones are about smart phones and solitary vs. couples. They seem like recycled personality traits from the sims3 like technophobe. They absolutely are cobbling another system onto a flawed game that is some mix of personality traits and aspirations. Although it could be worse, i was kind of worried that they'd declare sexual orientations are lifestyles.

it’s so sad that over and over again with these packs we can’t expect any more gameplay than listed in the descriptions. in previous games with expansions we’d get loads more to do we didn’t see listed in the pack’s description. my expectations are pretty low, i’d love nothing more than to be proved wrong. :/

Yes! I remember previous games you would see the trailers and know the basic new stuff, but once you started playing, you'd find all kinds of extra stuff to do and you'd run to the forums to ask if anyone else had noticed it or seen it or how to get it to happen (I remember using spoiler tags because stuff would be so hidden in the packs and you didn't want to ruin it for others who hadn't played or discovered it yet)... that just doesn't happen, anymore, because we see pretty much everything in the trailers because there's never really that much put into the packs.

What I hope this lifestyle will bring: If I create a Sim that is for example a little thick and I create this story of her wanting to lose weight and do more exercise, because I play her like that, she becomes Energetic and a Health Food Nut, because I send her to do exercises and to eat a lot of salads, then I don't have to tell her to cook salads or to do some sport, she will do this on her own, when I'm not controlling her and controlling for example her sibling. It is her new lifestyle, she adopted. And I think she will feel more happy when she does things like that, but if she does the opposite like eating Junk Food or not exercising enough, she will get a bad moodlet and will try to do again what her Lifestyle is. At least that's how I imagine that it would play out to be.

I’m actually kinda excited. I just hope we learn more about lifestyles because that’s the main selling point of the pack. I read the blog post and it seemed cool. I think you can have workaholic sims. And before the gameplay trailer I wasn’t really interested in winter sports. But after seeing it I’m super interested in playing with those things. I feel like they are going to hide lifestyles like they did with the apartments in eco lifestyle and show us how cool and in depth they are. One can only hope they won’t screw up again 🤞🏿

I'm a little hopeful but definitely skeptical. As someone who loves building, the one thing that sticks out to me is that it looks like we'll be able to have elevations inside the house. I do hope this is a feature that'll be added to the base game, like they did with ladders last spring. I still remember the first time I tried to build a nightclub. Back then I wanted to add an elevated VIP-area only to discover that I can't do that. So fingers crossed on that front. On the other hand I was a little hopeful that we would be able to finally create our own ponds. But it looks like the springs are just going to be an object that you can place. And even the houses in the trailer only used fountains. Gameplay-wise I'm definitely more on the skeptical side. The lifestyle looks pretty shallow and I fear it's just going to affect emotions rather than sims actions. And I fear climbing the mountain is going to be one of those things you'll only do once and then never again.

I agree with you on the English voiceover thing. I think they do these voiceovers simply to make up for the lack of sufficient gameplay animation. There's not enough content for them to follow the "show, don't tell" rule because other than lovely graphics, there's not enough variety in social interactions to tell a story without narration. As you’ve said, these gameplay trailers have very little gameplay shown…which is why they have to just tell you everything.
Also, I'm a lesbian and admittedly went "aww" near the end, but then realized that the representation was just a façade. Watch the video without the audio and you wouldn’t know there’s a lesbian couple. They had the opportunity at the “romance” part to show them kissing and it actually would’ve contributed to the story and would’ve made narrative sense. At best, it’s just them revealing that they have no idea how to tell a story anymore.
At worst, they didn’t want to show that for the sake of optics. I really hope it’s the former, but the latter wouldn’t surprise me since it’s a pattern for most mainstream media. Because it’s okay to talk about LGBTQ+ people or show brief images of them in the background, but making them the focus point of a trailer AND having them kiss would be WAY too much. LGBTQ+ representation told through a voiceover is like putting a pretty coat of paint on to trick people into thinking something isn't totally bland.
Sorry for the rant, I just have a lot of conflicting emotions. I want this game to succeed and I recognize that they’ve evolved as a game when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation, but it’s a stretch to call them pioneers.
On the other hand, they’ve DEvolved as a game when it comes to storytelling. Now more than ever.
EDIT: Also, on a less important note, it shows how little respect they have for the game's legacy. Simlish is a trademark of The Sims. Even when they sold out with that Katy Perry Sweet Treats pack, they still had her record a song in Simlish.

One of the big problem of the Sims 4 is that they consider emotions and personalities as the same thing. Which in the real world are not. Personality can influence emotions yes, but the Sims4 put all the personality of the sims on the frequency they feel certain emotions.
A system that could work, but is flawed by the fact that sims get buffs/debuffs from the world around them, and those are the same for every sims, no matter their personality traits. It erases all individuality and they all feel the same because of this.
EA was really proud of their emotions system at the release of the game, but it is too centered around it. Almost all personality traits just influence the emotions (hot-blooded = angry more often
Creative = inspired more often etc), which again, COULD work, but the rest of the game is just a bunch of activities influencing those moodlets, so all sims feel the same.
The personality system needs an overhaul that would detach the traits from emotions, and give the sims actual behaviors.
They need to bring back favorite foods, colors, music too, and here sims emotions could be influenced by the world around them, but each in different ways since their liking would be different.
There's so much that could be done and make this game amazing, but EA needs to take it from scratch, and they are definitely not ready for it. They prefer to put a band aid on it and hope it works.

The lifestyle stuff reminds me of the celebrity traits, I even recognize the one where your sim is addicted to their telephone in one of the hidden lifestyle symbols, which is referred to in this trailer as well (when she's talking about the zen stuff).
And I got the word you're looking for when describing those voice-overs: patronizing. It's like they are specifically targeting kids now (probably because kids have no experience of Sims 2 or Sims 3 to reference to when evaluating how good (=bad) of a game the Sims 4 is)

This franchise went from "make your own story" to "we will make your story for you, and you will never touch it ever again". I hate that all of the newer packs have this "strangerville" kinda formula. It's always like: go to a new world, do things that are only self contained, bring the cheesy storyline to an end, never play with this world ever again

    1) **Agreed** with the voiceovers on the "gameplay" trailers. No, no you're not the only one. :) It sounds like Disney voiceovers, fully intended for young girls. Remember the Sims 1 TV ads? (I don't know if you're old enough.) They were all _gameplay_ in _Simlish!_ I've been wanting Simlish since the beginning. Either _that,_ or the devs actually explaining the new gameplay!
    2) **Agreed** on the "lifestyle" update. Those are quite limited AND simple. Yes, it looks shallow. You take the words straight out of my brain!
    3) **"The Rules"** and **No Consequences.** OK, so I've been playing The Sims 3 in the last month or so. It's crazy how common hidden consequences happen! (Not saying that didn't happen in previous games. I'm just saying consequences ended in The Sims 4.) I miss the complexities and details so much.
    Graphics aren't everything!
