That's the 80s !!!! I heard that song for first time when I was 17 in 1989 . Chris Rea is a storyteller, his voice and his guitar lead you to another dimension.
Just watched. Love Chris Rea. So undiscovered and underrated. Probably because he's not a big self publicist. But he is incredibly talented. Plays everything. More than just the guitar. And that voice .....
This song was a big part of my youth.. After the "Happy go Lucky"-decade of the 1980`s , finally someone outside of the "Metal" cluster of Bands made a "Dark" song ..I love it !! ..and, here are some other nice Songs sung by a man with an underrated voice... "Right Now" and "Poundcake" .. ( by Van Halen , with Sammy Hagar on Vocals..)
Chris Rea wrote the best part of this song when he was on the actual "road to hell" which is the infamous ring road around London, the M25. If anyone's ever been on it at busy times, you'll understand what he means. I have been on that particular road too many times to mention!
Chris recorded a series of wonderful albums, some great songs on them. Dancing with Strangers, Auberge and On the Beach were just a few well worth looking into. His unique vocals also added another dimension to his music.

First saw Chris as support to Eric Clapton. He always said Mark Knopfler enabled him to play the music he did. He suffered a terrible illness and could not play for a good while. Great slide guitarist.
Chris Rea was stuck in traffic on the M4 motorway in England when he got the idea for this song, where he imagines the ghost of his mother approaching the vehicle to warn him that he is on "the road to hell."

Chris Rea is one of those rare talents who is able to play sublime lead while singing. I saw him live in Killarney many years ago. His rapport with the audience was amazing. He is an artist who, when they say, he’s even better live, it is actually true. The best live show I have ever attended.
Ah, Chris Rea. He's in my top 3 musical artists of all time (up there with Robin Trower and Pink Floyd). His voice is simply magical and whatever story he is telling, he transports you somewhere else. You should give "Nothing to Fear" a reaction/listen. It's my favorite song by him. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

This song is so atmospheric, and yes, it does make me feel a bit emotional, it's just an amazing song. Thanks so much for this reaction, guys, really enjoyed it.
The utterly absolutely fantastic Chris Rea probably the most underrated pop star in the UK. Chris always wanted to be one of the big superstar singer/songwriters of his time but he was a very modest man and in his recent years has not had the best of health and is almost unrecognisable from his great days of the 1980’s. But for me it’s Chris’s voice that has the edge on many of his great songs.

First comments! Yay! Love u boys, and love Chris Rea. His Christmas song 'driving home for christmas' is a firm favourite of my family, especially my dad. Thanks for your vids, you guys are so genuine and appreciate all the classic music 😊👍 Our main faves are Pink Floyd and Rush 🙌
Very surprised you found this one. For me this song was the perfect commentary on the greed and ruthlessness of the '80s. A materialistic fast track to nowhere. And yes the Mark Knopfler-esqe comparisons are inescapable.
Lived close to where i lived growing up , his Christmas song " Driving home for Christmas" is very popular at Christmas still! My daughter and i were listening to this album recently on youtube! 👍👍👍
Chris is such a great slide player alone let alone his normal picking its not true, and his gritty voice is so distinctive, a world-class act and great live too. His love songs are superb like 'September Blue' from his platinum album 'Dancing with Strangers', not just the rockers like 'Stainsby Girls'. His tone is like Knopflers in places.
Lucky to have seen Cris Rea in concert .Amazing .The sound affects to Road to Hell was amazing the sound vibrated right through your whole body . This amazing artist has been SO overlooked . I feel he won’t be fully appreciated until his passing . So sad .
Chris Rea has a large catalogue of albums dating back to 1973 with 'Whatever Happened to Beni Santini'. I prefer his earlier albums, Dancing with Strangers, Shamrock Diaries, On the Beach & Wired to the Moon. Later he started tapping into his love of Blues Music. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2001, The Road To Hell singer had his pancreas removed, leaving him with diabetes. He has also had his duodenum taken out, all of which has left him living on a cocktail of medication something like 35 pills a day to keep him alive.
Oh, definitely Diaries, Beach and Strangers are the best, but there's a lot of good later stuff too. Yes, I have listened to every single album in the Blue Guitars set, and there are some gems in there. He tries to stick to the formula of the blues style of the album, but sometimes he finds one of those catchy Rea hooks and off he goes.
I like his early albums as well, but I prefer his late 80's to mid 90's outings; specifically the trio of "The Road to Hell", "Auberge", and "God's great banana skin", none of them is Blues proper. (of course, he's always Blues-inspired, and in fact I remember reading in some review that Chris Rea found the way to fuse Blues and Danceable Rock into his own especial cocktail, I found that conclusion to have some gravitas). In addition to these 3, I love his 88 sort-of compilation "New Light Through Old Windows", in which he re-recorded all the hits from his earlier albums, and they all sound far better than the originals.
Chris Rea is one of the best guitarists ever to pick up a guitar and start playing it, he has guested on stage with all the great bands like Dire Straights and jammed with them. Another one of his best songs is 'Stainsby Girls' but i'd rather you reacted to 'Gonna buy a hat'.

I have followed and seen Chris Rea many times over his incredible career, as a superbly talented singer/songwriter and performer on many instruments including keyboards. This song was put together when on his way to London Heathrow airport, his limousine was stuck in gridlock on the Motorway in appaling weather. The basics were there in less than 30 minutes. An absolute classic. Chris also released a box set titled ' Blue Guitars'., around 2004 included some 132 new original tracks, spread over 11 albums and each one in a different Style, from Blues to rock and everything in between. He also designed the artwork on each cover, all being released in one day as one boxed set. Incredible artist and a superb musician.
One of my favourite songs. Superb guitarist , has that beautiful tone , similar to knopfler and Gilmour. Although not quite as good as those two. Looking for the summer is also brilliant. Cool reaction guys as usual
@@stanley2681 Ive always liked Chris Rea , he's had a few songs that I'm not keen on, but on the whole his ability on the guitar outshines that . And the ability to write classics like this
Looking For the Summer and Curse of the Traveller fight in my mind for 'best Chris Rea song'. At the moment Traveller is winning but come March or April and I'm looking for the summer for real, I think they'll switch places. I don't know any other writer who manages to conjure up the heat and the haze and the lazy lustfulness of summer quite the way Chris does. Thankyou for a great reaction, I forgot about this song, and it’s brought back good memories.
