Self-Massage for Shoulder Impingement Syndrome-Alleviate Shoulder Pain and Increase Mobility

  • One of the most common causes of shoulder pain that I see in my practice is shoulder impingement syndrome. This is often caused or exacerbated by compromised posture. When we round our shoulders forward, the space between the acromion process of the scapula, and the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) becomes narrower, and these bony surfaces end up rubbing against structures that travel through that space (aka subacromial space). The impinged structures include rotator cuff tendons, a bursa, and a ligament.
This can be an acutely painful condition, and often reduces the range of motion of the shoulder. Shoulder impingement can make it difficult for a person to lift their arm forward, to the side, or reach behind them. It can become very debilitating and significantly limit daily activities.
If you have been diagnosed with a shoulder impingement or rotator cuff injury, you won’t want to miss this amazing self-massage designed to target the affected muscles and tendons, easing shoulder pain and increasing shoulder mobility.
If your shoulder pain is caused by poor posture or shoulder mechanics, I recommend asking your doctor about physical therapy. It's very effective for strengthening the shoulder and postural muscles that may have weakened over time. Combine it with massage therapy to ease pain, reduce muscle tension, lengthen shortened muscles, and calm the nervous system, and you are well on your way to a happy shoulder!

Hi again Rachel, there were a few times I still woke up during night sleep last night. I counted around 5 times but those are less than nights before (been 2 years already). I did this session once this morning and everything went great, until as the day goes by now it is afternoon, i felt sore again in my arm and I decided to do this session again and now better. I hope I will have so much better sleep tonight.

I am seeing a P.T. every two weeks for an proximal humerus fracture and now have frozen shoulder. Good question! It means most of us spend countless hours hunched forward over laptops, tablets, phones, desks, and even while driving. The resulting postural imbalances involve rounded shoulders, a forward head, and excessive thoracic spinal curves. To put it succinctly, we're all slumping!
