The EASIEST Way to Attach Wood to Brick

  • In this video ill show you the easiest way to attach wood to brick. It really is super simple.
    The method gives an incredibly strong fixing and can be used not just for fixing fence posts to a brick wall, but in any application when fixing timber to concrete or brick.
    The screws used are called concrete screws or thunder bolts. You can hang gates off of the posts when bolted using these.
    No rawl plugs required. You just pilothole into the brick or concrete and screw straight in, with the benefit of being able to easily unscrew them down the line.
    I hope that this video helped you in some way, and if it did, please leave a comment for me in the comments section. I love to hear from people who gained value from any of my videos. I always respond to comments, so would be great to hear from you guys ! 👍

    I used these screws to mount a gatepost to the side of my now 125 year old brick house 12 years ago. Worked a treat. The gate was one side of a 6' high by 8' wide double timber gate. It's never moved at all. I used a ratchet to put the screws in.
    The other gate post was concreted 1000 mm into the ground with 50mm gravel in the bottom for drainage. At ground level and about 500mm below/250mm above, I wrapped Denso tape around the post.
    I also did the same with the post against the house but only to about 300mm deep.
    No rot in either post. Used pressure treated wood.

    I was taught to put washers on the back and front side. The back to leave an air gap so the wood won’t trap moisture and rot.

      Hi I’m 76 next month it’s April 2024 now. A female I’m building a catio and for my cats to go out and an enclosed lean-to in my back yard over the back door, with a door on to the yard. Keep cats from going on the streets. I was wondering about how to secure the wood to the brickwork, you made it seem so easy. I’ve watched some other vids, that stressed me out, yours was perfection. I’ve done quite a bit of woodwork but never drilled anything into brick, Thank very much from East Anglia, Britain.

    You’ve made a good point, nice and clear for everyone who wants to take up a do it yourself fencing replacement or repair.
    My choice has always been masonry nails, 100mm for a 50mm timber wall plate, six nails one hammer and I’ll be on to digging the first post hole while you’re still drilling.
    I’m not knocking you for what you’re doing here, I like your channel, if your average person with any capability to take on a job like fencing definitely needs the help from you as you well know.
    Back in the day we would chisel out the mortar, dowel it then nail into the doweling with ordinary nails, it’ll not want to go anywhere but sideways and the nails prevent that movement.
    My opinion comes from experience, and timber doesn’t last as long as it’s fixing these days 👍🏻

    Thanks for this video. But quick question, we have been trying to drill holes in our brick shed to put hooks up for my partners fishing gear, but we can't seem to drill through the brick! It's an old shed, and just ordinary bricks, and we've been using a hammer drill and a brand new masonry drill bit. What is making it so difficult to drill a hole? Yours went in like butter!

    • @Jack-Surreal_Panes
      @Jack-Surreal_Panes Рік тому +4

      Right. Now I have done lots of work over the years and anything brick or concrete....we just don't get along at all. I try, like you, using the proper bit begin drilling and that's it. If I make a nice hole it is now too big. I used the same bits the concrete guys use to form concrete driveways. Guess that is why god created liquid nails and epoxy. LOL

    • @NeilMagill
      @NeilMagill Рік тому +8

      Try a quality drill bit (try Dewalt or Erbauer) also make sure you are using a corded drill with hammer action on, that should do the trick.

    • @dare369
      @dare369 Рік тому +4

      When drilling masonry bits into concrete it takes a min to get started sometimes and sometimes you have to put a ton of force behind the drill. I'm sure this isn't the recommended way but if you put a lot of your wieght behind the drill to hold the bit down with extra force after a min it should grab and then start drilling.
      I was able to drill with a regular battery powered drill. The bits can be rly expensive. Don't buy a bit that comes in a pack of mixed types but a single standard masonry bit. Usually around here they are blue. Good luxk

    You are best to drill into the mortar not the brick. The brick may offer slightly better fixing in certain circumstances but if the timber has to be taken down, which it will at some time in the future you are then not left with hole that is difficult and unsightly to repair. Getting the fixing into the mortar means that the repair can be easily and effectively made. The other consideration is that bricks are lightened with a pressed frog indentation or multiple holes and drilling into these voids will provide a highly suspect fixing and you could end up with a pepper pot of holes in the timber and brickwork.
    This video is about the convenience of the fencing installer and not about considered construction fixing.
