Install a wood fence above an existing wall. The fence it's made out of pressure treated lumber (pine).

Fantastic video and doing exactly what I am trying to do on my own brick wall. I am mounting on a solid wall so won't need the sleeves, but wondered how big a hole I should drill for 12mm threaded bars?

Awesome! Gave me an idea. Im going to do the same to an existing concrete restraining wall that doesn’t look good. Im thinking of installing beams just as you did and then running a board vertically all the way down so I then can run the boards across horizontally covering the wall and creating a short fence above it about 2 feet. Im thinking I should also screw in some screws into the vertical bards going down for extra support. Just not sure if this will mess up the strength of the actual retaining wall??

Just wondering, if I were to install this extension on a wooden pine base and not a concrete one, would you still use the chemical anchors? or would you simply drill the other end of the bolt into the wooden base, or use other types of anchors & epoxy/adhesive on the base?
Hi, thanks a lot. In my opinion if the base is pine you should drill the other end of the directly into the wood. That’s the best option since the chemical anchoring is not so good on wood. 👍

Great job 👌 More difficult if you have to do it on an uneven stone wall, have you ever had to build a fence on a stone wall ? If so how did you find it ?
Thank you so much! No, I've never built a fence on a stone wall, but I think you can have the same approach if it's not too uneven. The only thing is that the gap between the wall and the first board will look a little uneven, but I think it should be OK! 👍😉

Thanks a lot! I discarded the ends because the beam have been siting outside for a while and the ends were a little bit damaged.

Thanks! I’ve used pressure treated pine. It’s important to be pressure treated wood so that it can last longer outside. I bought it in Lisbon, Portugal, close to where I live. 😀
Hi, great video ! What is the distance between the vertical beams and why did you chose not to use metal cup holders for the vertical beams but instead mount them directly to the wall (won’t the touch surface between the wood and the wall rot ?) ? Thanks and keep up the great work !!!
Hi, Thanks! The distante between the vertical beams varies, in one part of the L is around 1,2m and in the other part is only 1m. The reason for not using metal cup holders is because the wall is not thick enough to hold its bases, and also because of the final look of the fence. I don’t the wood will rot because I applied silicon based insulation outside where the beam touches the wall.
Nice video. I'm considering doing the same around out patio. Do you think it would be worthwhile injecting some resin or glue into the fence post too, just to give it some extra strength?

Hi, it's a bit trickier, but you will have to cut an angle in the vertical posts so that they stay vertical on the sloped wall. Use a good drill bit that’s appropriate for stone, and then fix the horizontal boards the same way. I hope it helped! 👍

Hey thanks for the video, I want to do something similar but was wondering, what part of the process might change if I were to build the same fence but 6 feet tall from the top of the stone wall
That's a pretty high fence! I'm afraid these posts won't withstand strong winds. You should consider thicker posts, and some kind of reinforcement specially in the connection with the wall.

Question: What if the wall is hollow-ish cinder block with only stucco on top? Any suggestions? Our anchors don't seem really sturdy.
Hi, actually this wall is made of hollow blocks. It's a matter of injecting enough chemical anchoring to fill the gap. And very important, use the plastic sleeves! Good luck with your build 👍🙂

Thanks! That depends on the distance you have to cover. In my case, I had about 1,2m (around 4 feet) in one side of the "L" and 1,08m (around 3.5 feet) on the other side. 👍

Great work. What is the length in between from one vertical post to another and what is the total length of the horizontal wood that measures 10x2cm. I assume that you left 1.07cm gap between each wood, right?
Thanks! The distance between each vertical post is 1.2m in one of the sides and around 1m in the other side. The horizontal boards are in one case around 2.5m and in the other 1.2m. And yes, the gap between the boards is around 11mm. I hope it helped. 👍

Hi why do you leave gaps in between the boards is this because of how the wood can expand with the tempature?
Hi, one of the reasons is due to wood expansion, but the gap is bigger than needed due to aesthetic aspects. The customer didn't want a very "closed" fence, so that more natural light comes in.

Hi, it's not mandatory to use the sleeves. They help the chemical anchoring not spreading too much but you don't need to use it. Thanks
About how much of the bolt did you put in the post and how much did you leave to put in the rock wall ? And how tall were your post ?
Hi, about the same on each side, around 15cm! A little more if the post is higher.
would this be possible with a 5 ft wooden fence above a 4" block wall? or would steel post holders bolted to wal top be better to hold he 5" Uprights or should i attach the wooden posts frther down wall maybe 5ft above the wall and 3ftbelow the top of wall for added support??

Thanks! In one of the sides they are approximately 1.015m apart and on the other side they are 1.17m apart.
Did you drill threads into the 4x4? And what is the plastic insert as well as the type of caulk you injected? What was set time also. Thks..jc
Hi, no, there's no need to drill threads, you just have to make sure the hole is wide enough to attach the threaded rod but at the same time having a tight fit. The plastic inserts are plastic sleeves specially made for this kind of chemical bushing. The set time is a couple of hours but I let it cure for at least one day before starting the rest of the installation. I hope it helped 👍

I mean you open the thread as you are inserting the rod, don't need to tap the thread in advance. You can use a smooth rod but of course a threaded rod gives you a much tighter fit. Don't forget to use a double nut and a spanner to help tighten the rod in.

Hi, the thickness is in the video description under material used, but it was 12mm. I used also a 12mm drill bit and then used the rod itself to "tap" the thread in the wood. I hope it helped! 👍
Did you use the impact drill or regular drill for drilling into the concrete?
I assume the final size of the concrete drill bit used was 12mm correct?
What is the spacing between the slats?
Hi, in this particular case is 11mm, but this was calculated to match the height of the fence, considering the height of each slat. 👍
my backyard wall is not brick made, but that wall was made with concrete and natural big rocks, can you suggest how can be built a wood fence on top of the wall with some base attachment?
This method also works well in concrete. You'll just need a stronger concrete drill and bit. As long as you have a fairly straight base you should be good. 😉👍

You can make it a little taller, but not much more, otherwise you’ll have to use a longer stud inside the wall. 👍

Is the same as chemical anchoring. In summary is a bonding compound that is inserted into the hole and promotes the adhesion of the metal and the concrete. Google it and you'll find a lot of information about it. 😉👍
