Redfish were everywhere! - Saltwater Fly Fishing - McFly Angler Episode 109

- I was able to make another trip down to Corpus to fish for some redfish and finally hooked into a few. This trip I was able to land 4 redfish and hooked 5. This really was the best trip ive ever had catching redfish in the gulf since Ive started my channel. This was site fishing for tailing reds in ankle deep water. And best of all, the new fly I created just for them worked great! It really was amazing to see my own fly creation working so well.
So redfish pull very hard. In fact one almost ripped the rod out of my hand when I set the hook. Another ran fast towards me and I tripped trying to run backwards to keep tension on the line. But even with my blunders, I was still able to bring 3 reds in, and one was over 20" which was legal to keep. Now, I don't always keep fish, but I do occasionally keep fish from the saltwater. Especially redfish and speckled trout. They taste great and I know the fish weren't farmed. We only kept one fish, and max would have kept 2, one for my buddy and one for me. My family ate that fish the night I got back home, and therefor nothing went to waste. I am not about filling a freezer, thats what the grocery store is for, but there is something about catching and eating fish that somehow makes it taste even better! Its fresh, and I can filet it to where there is no meat left. Therefor less waste than store bought.
The mosquitoes were terrible though this trip, and even with all the bug repellent sprayed on us, we got swarmed. I had over 50 bites on my body after the first days fishing. The other thing to worry about down here, especially wade fishing is stingray. And sharks as well. Bull sharks are notorious for attacking humans, and stingrays will get you with their barb if you step on them. So you have to do what is called the stingray shuffle, and also have to keep looking out for sharks, even in shallow water. Big bull sharks have been known to come through the canals and even flats sometimes. There are also alligators that make their way down here from the rivers that dump into the ocean. So if you ever make it down to the gulf to fish for redfish like me and Johnny, then make sure you stay safe and be careful. Last thing you want is for a trip to be ruined by a stingray barb or getting West Nile virus from too many mosquito bites.
For me however all these risks are worth such an amazing experience fishing for redfish. I am very happy to finally land one of these on camera for you all, and hope to continue this luck on future trips to the gulf.

Great video McFly! Been fishing the Texas coast for over 40 years..unbelievable moments of huge fish and nightmare moments of mosquito swarms when camping for weeks at a time. It can literally get dangerous if not prepared for them. Always shuffle for stingrays even when fighting a fish (that’s when my brother got hit, messed him up for months). No need to explain or apologize to anyone for keeping fish. Good for you! Try redfish on the half shell over some hot coals.
Yep that’s how I did it, but on my cast iron. Can’t do bbq at my apartment building unfortunately.
As for apologizing, it wasn’t as much an apology as explaining that I don’t keep more than one or two. Believe me, I’ve had death threats before from people when I keep fish . Lol! Gotta love people! Haha
I'm not sure about DEET but DDT was suggested to the be the real cause of the 50s polio epidemic, that's why they don't fog children publicly with it anymore as they did. That's Big Chem for you: Toxic and barely works if at all. Have you tried essential oil bug repellant? Most are blends but the main ingredient is citronella. That works really well for me outdoors. Not one bite over my entire recent August weekend camping trip in the Rockies. The weren't as dense but they would immediately fly off my skin without biting.
I use a natural more often. But in this situation I needed chemicals. I think this is the 2nd time I’ve used deet in 5 years.

It did, I had over 100’s on me, and only got bit on my back and a few spots on my hands where I didn’t spray. I didn’t spray my back like an idiot, and it washed off my hands when I was fishing. But I agree, I don’t like using it and don’t often. Only when it’s very needed
You had me scratching just watching you swat them skitters. Been there with the No see ums in the high grass along the bay in Gulf Shores, Al. I gave up and ran back to the car. Glad y’all stuck it out. Really enjoyed watching you catch ‘em on your fly!
Get a hat line it with plastic for you head and put diesel on it and you won’t get bit!
