Corpus Redfish Fly Fishing - Surprisingly great trip - McFly Angler Episode 112

- Another day, and a couple more reds! After years of heading down to corpus with horrible luck, finally I think I have figured out these reds. The last 3 trips Ive caught redfish, and this trip was one of the best Ive ever had. The weather was horrible, with rain, heavy wind, and the cold made me wish I was at home by a fire. However, all of that was worth it because the redfish were on fire!
Now I went down, and fished 3 separate days. This video is on the first two days fishing. I fished alone the first day, and was able to fish with Johnny for a few hours on the 2nd day. The wind was very bad though on the 2nd day, which made it difficult to land any reds. However Johnny was able to get one the 2nd day, but it was just shy of the slot size. I got a 17-18" the first day, however I also was able to get a slot sized red that was 24". In Texas, the redfish have to be between 20-28" to keep. And you can keep up to 3 per day.
This spot that we stumbled across a few months back is one of the best redfish spots ive ever fished! Its a flats area, that takes a while to walk to. In fact its about a 2 mile walk, though tall grass and mud. But the walk is worth it! The reds are everywhere, and generally you can see them chasing bait in the water. They are actively feeding in this area so they readily take flies if presented properly. The best part of it, is that the walk deters other fisherman from coming to that spot, and therefor we have the whole flats area to ourselves. I have never seen anyone back there, or even seen foot prints (except for hogs, deer and crane). Pristine fishing, that I am very happy we found.
The rod I was fishing today is called the Goliath Rod. Its made for this type of fishing, in heavy wind and for big fish. Its powerful and saltwater rated. The reel is called the "whale" reel, and it also has a powerful drag, fully machined, and is saltwater rated with a sealed drag. I love this setup. Both the rod and reel are manufactured by Risen Fly. Their prices are amazing for the quality of gear they sell. And above all their customer service is un matched in the industry. Best of all, they are offering all my subscribers a discount on their already great prices. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in "McFly" at checkout for 15% off of anything in their shop.
Also guys, check out my patreon page. For as little as $1/month you can become one of my patrons and help support this channel. Next time I go back to my hometown in Virgina I'm going to try salt water fly fishing for the first time. You've got me interested.
Awesome! It’s fun for sure, not sure what you will be fishing for but make sure you have an 8wt if it’s anything large.
I would call you lucky people. U just fish for fun & also uve got all the very best equipment to fish too....
Love to watch it even its a dream for me🙂😍😍🙏
Thanks man! Yeah it’s enjoyable for sure, love my job! So the equipment isn’t too badly priced. Risen fly is some of the best priced fly rods out there for their quality. Check them out, you too might be able to use the equipment
This video shows you can still catch reds even if you have to blind cast to likely areas to find them. Great video sir
Thanks man. Yeah for sure. I mean, it’s much easier to sight cast for them but it’s still possible
Unfortunately I have horrible vision. So I will be blind casting the flats in Florida as soon as spring rolls around
Oh sorry to hear that, but you should still catch
glad you got on some reds! I need to get down to the coast soon.
Yeah it’s great down there, love fishing for redfish! Glad you enjoyed the video
It looks like fun. Unfortunately I got Covid pneumonia and ended up in the hospital recently. Been here for about almost 2 weeks. It sucks but I’m going to make it. I can’t wait to get back to swinging flies. Tight lines
Oh man, sorry to hear that, I hope you get better soon. Glad you enjoyed the video
Sorry to hear that. Hope you have a full recovery!
Nice, thanks. I miss the gulf coast, in UT now and it just isn't the same. More fun catching carp out here than trout and fighting the crowds. I do have some seasonal bass spots though, but nothing will ever beat the bay for me. I miss wading and chasing reds and specks, someday I will go back to p mansfield and buy a place or somewhere farther south with grass. Damn I love that coast, so jealous.
Oh I feel ya. I’ve fished out in Utah before, good trout fishing out there. Lived in Colorado for years, actually miss that a lot. But yes redfish is fun for sure. And I love carp fishing! They are picky little jerks though
Nice!
Thanks
Many of my friend just cant seem to understand why I love fly fishing.
It’s ok, do it for you. Lol
I now fish at those spur of the moment times when I see a puddle of water ,my grown sons and I constantly go fishing on a moments notice ,such as hey dad grab your gear let's go ,best days of my life, we take my grandsons every chance we get and teach then
It’s great to teach the younger generations
Nice
Thanks
That area UA-camer thresherfishing fishes...always landing flounders....you gotta go deep south between Brownsville and port Isabel...for huge snook
Ok cool. I’ll look, just thats soooo far away from me…. Haha
Cool dude
👍
Love to fish that area on my kayak, I’ll be back there 3/1/24
You get a kayak in there? Do you drag it over the mangroves or is there a way to prattle in? I always have to climb over the mangroves to get back in there
The same happened to me, I was born an raised in connecticut now lived in charleston south carolina an 50s cold
Lol for sure man! Haha! Isn’t it funny what we get used to?
Good going
Thanks
Love the gulf coast! Lived in Corpus in the late 90’s. Didn’t start fly fishing till I moved to Montana 4 years back. Can’t wait to try and get on some redfish this June! Do you sell any flies by chance?
Yeah I fished for years in Colorado and love that fishing but catching a red is quite amazing! And yes I sell flies
@@McFlyAngler I looked and couldn’t find where to buy some flies, would love to support you by purchasing some before my trip out there! Keep up the great work!
For some reason I cannot get to the comment you just made saying you can't find where I sell flies. SO I will respond here. I dont have a website or anything. I just do it by word of mouth. Best way is to go to Instagram and private message me there. If you dont have instagram, then Facebook works. If you dont have any social media, you can find my email in the about section of my UA-cam home page. Just email me and we can start the order process.
Way to go McFly! Nice red. How did it taste?
Thanks! It was great! Cooked it with some blackening seasoning on a cast iron skillet skin down. Then stuck it in the oven, had it with some broccoli and cauliflower rice. Great!
Would like to see a sbs of that clouser. Also, you should try a stripping basket out there. It definitely helps with line control.
I actually did a video on that clouser recently, it’s called clouser with legs. Check it out. Yeah a stripping basket would help for sure
@@McFlyAngler must have missed that one. I look for it now. Thanks
Is the fishing good down there in August? I will be down there the second week. For the first time.
Ya I mean it’s hot, but if you can deal with that you can catch fish
Just found out about Risen. Great prices for most fly stuff. Hows that Goliath rod?
I really like my Goliath rod. Where I fish in the gulf it’s super windy and I can power out some long casts still against the wind.
Looks like Wilson’s Cut?!?!?!?!!!
No it’s not Wilson’s.
Nice intro
thanks.
Just curious why you don’t use a stripping basket and wading staff? Also are you fishing a rising tide?
I don’t have one. When on rocks it helps for sure.
Ok bos q
Lol ok
My dude! You tie flies let the presentation speak for itself. Just try a couple times NO SCENT.
I have…. Lol. In fact in the video I did. I like to raise my chances any way possible though, and scents help mask human scent that will throw the fish off. Or glues/resins you put on the flies.
Scent on your flies? If you want to fish bait, have at it, but don’t call it fly fishing. For me, a huge part of fly fishing is the extra challenge vs bait or spinning gear. To each their own I suppose.
Ok boomer.
Wow, such a well thought out rebuttal. You really got me.
Eric I think your wrong. So many fish have great senses with smell. They can smell the oils from your skin when you put the flies on, glue or resin you use to cement the flies. Etc…. Adding scent helps cover that up. Obviously I didn’t bring it the first day and caught fish. I just like to increase my chances any way I can. If you want to make it so hard on yourself be my guest. For me, I tie great flies that can catch them without, but happy to use scent to get them to not get as skittish with other smells.
@@McFlyAngler Like I said to each their own. It seems like using the gutter bumpers when you go bowling and bragging about your score to me.
You can think whatcha want. Btw, I didn’t use it when I caught those fish. LOL! I said I forgot to bring it. Not even sure what we are arguing about anymore. Take care
