21:45 I don't know if this was planned or completely impromtu but the kid getting caught in a tree while you're saying "I'm not gonna lie to you and say it's the easiest thing you've ever done" is just poetic
I always looked at those old fly fishermen near where I went to college like they were arcane wizards of some obscure fishing magicks. It's still kinda mystical in other ways, but now demystified.

14:08 Pete had my head spinning for a second with that Double Mocha Frappuccino. But click here for your first casting lesson. This video is so great! I may actually start fly fishing.
First fly kit is in the mail and trying to study up before I hit the waters. Fly fished some 20 years ago, but only a few times. Really looking forward to learning and expanding my knowledge.
I feel like I just found an old dusty VHS-fishing tutorial at my grandparents lake-lodge that they remted from their local fishing-store fourty years ago but forgot to return. What an absolute gem of a video. Unbeatable cozy vibes and super informative. Much love from Sweden!
I've watched tons of videos because I want to get into fly fishing and this one has by far been the most informative. I feel so relaxed about it now and prepared to take a step into it. I'm also positive that I will be buying an Orvis fly fishing combo because of how much effort this company puts into their customers.
As an avid golfer who loves watching seven days in utopia, the fly fishing cast is just like a golf swing that the movie portrays. Balance and rhythmic, with the timing of a swing. I wanna try fly fishing at some point in life
Hey Tom! Always enjoy your teaching. You take the mystery out and make it simple. Not sure if you are the Cat that gets these messages but wanted you to know that I appreciate you. Please stay safe out there and I'll look for you on the water.
Excellent video, nice to get a brief history of the sport before the lesson. I grew up sea angling, and fly fishing is totally new to me. I've joined a local club and picked up a rod combo, so I'm just looking forward to just getting out on the water now and working on my casting.
I love to fish, and my 14-year-old grandson does too. We love trout fishing, but use spinning gear. We're gonna learn fly fishing together. We don't have anyone to guide or teach us, but we'll finger it out. It's going to be fun.
I now realize, to learn effectively, I need someone to pretend I’m 6. Then, they’ll explain in in a clear, easy to understand manner, like this fella! 😂 What a great teacher! 👍
I scrolled down to see if anyone else noticed! The best part is that it happened when he was saying “I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it’s the easiest thing you’ve ever done…” 😂😂😂
Personally, normal fishing works for me, it’s fun, I’m prolly never gonna attempt to fly fish, but this is still very interesting. Maybe I’ll look into it,
Just got my first fly rod handed down from my granddad. Always wanted to fly fish but never had a rod. I'm about to freshen up the float line and leader then try it out.
I loved the video. Just bought my first fly fishing kit yesterday lol. Can’t wait to try it out for my first time. 😂😂😂 I love fishing just never tried fly fishing lolol.
When I started a hundred years ago, the 3 best pieces of advice I received were: 1) If you can roll cast, you can catch fish. 2) Get your hands wet. Turn over some rocks. 3) Get and keep the fly in the water. Only a couple of false casts and retrieve at a speed that matches the bug's natural movement.
Just started fishing in Albuquerque New Mexico the local pond has a catch and release pond the trout in that lake are 14 to 20 in. what do you recommend
Some of the waters and streams in this video seem otherworldly. Here in the UK almost every water is privatised and cut off from the public, does anyone know the location of some of these amazing waters?
I caught 3 nice sized bass all small mouths but still need to get better on my casting I tried to count to 3 then cast but never seem to get good leverage with my line.
I have had a fly rod for about 2 years now, but never really used it for fishing. My time up in Northern New Mexico makes me regret not taking it and practicing various techniques, since it was a prime location for it. I'm definitely gonna take it next time, and I'm kicking myself for not taking it with me.😢
Fly fishing IS easy to learn.. If you didn't grow up fishing in the gulf on the ocean. For those of us who have grown up fishing (I'm 49) we have to entirely reprogram our fishing brains. Literally everything is backwards in fly fishing that that of open water or bass fishing.
Hello, I'm new to fly fishing.. and already bought my 5wt setup few days ago and got few practical tips on how to cast the fly.. so do you recommend me to get more practice at the field before ready to get my first fish on a fly?
I have a 5 wt and a 7 wt rod, to save some money I'm interested in a Clearwater cassette reel, I see its a 6-8 wt reel, will the reel work on my 5wt rod if I load one cassette with 5wt line?
Thank goodness we have a company like Maxcatch and a few others, although definitely not many. But it's a good thing trouts can still be caught on a Spin gear set up..! Otherwise, how can a person on an average salary afford fly fishing. I'm a keen fisho, and I own many top end fishing gears like Daiwa Saltiga and Shimano Stella and many top end rods to go with these reels. But when I started to check out some fly fishing gears, I was totally and utterly shocked how expensive they were..? Everything which is fly fishing, it's expensive. Rods, reel, and even lines. Even the floats are more expensive, much more expensive. WHY? I just can't understand the reasons why these fly rods and reels are more expensive than my Portable fridge, and sometimes more than a car..! Are they made out of diamonds or something similar? It's basically just a round wheel where you put your lines on it. So how is that worth over $1000? Same for rod as well! Anything and everything half decent it's worth around $1000. Have you seen the Top end Salt water reels and Rods? They consists of materials NASA uses and their technology is no comparison compared to fly fishing gears. But yet, these fly gears are much much more dearer..! Unless you're a doctor or lawyer or just plain some millionaires, how could anyone enjoy fly fishing with some half decent gear? Honestly Fly fishing manufacturers, you guy's are unbelievable. How could anyone justify these carry outrageous prices on fly fishing equipment?
you own some very good quality spin fishing reels, a basic fly rod/reel/line would cost less. however, i totally understand your statement about fly fishing costing more....it can. But like any outdoor activity, you can spend a little or a lot to get in. hope you have a good fishing season
@orvisguidetoflyfishing it's good Sage and Lamson and few others have the cheaper optiond, like the spectrum c and lamson liquid etc which I own..! I do have a sage spectrum In the normal version and I do like my top end gear as I believe they have a reason for the huge price tag, but I just can't get my head around the costs in fly fishing. Im just confused, and that was a legitimate question. Why are these fly reels and rods so much dearer than salt water gear? Are they unbreakable?
Pikes a warm water fish? I'm either dumb or he's wrong and fishing is his whole life so why was I thought pike are cold water and why aren't there any pike here in Nashville???
21:45 I don't know if this was planned or completely impromtu but the kid getting caught in a tree while you're saying "I'm not gonna lie to you and say it's the easiest thing you've ever done" is just poetic

Heck yeah! I just caught my first fish on a fly rod yesterday 👍🏽
And so your journey begins! Don't forget the rest of the world lol its easy to get incredibly immersed in fly fishing.
❤🎉
I'm still waiting for this moment a week and a half after starting.
Good job
Caught one today for my first time !
I can't express how much this channel has helped me over the last three months of starting to fly fish. Thank you.
Great to hear! thanks
Anyone else wishing they had a dad that talked to them like this?
id type a demonstration of how my dad talked while teaching me to fish but itd get my youtube account banned😂😂
I just wish I had a dad…
@@jakeyjakey4018 at least he did teach you
My dad said he'll teach me to fish when he gets back from the shop ....... It's been 15 years ...
Got to go fishing with my pops once,
Mans still kicking and would never consider going with me
Tom Rosenbauer's books and podcast were my start in fly fishing and I am forever grateful. Thanks, Tom.

I have been fishing for 45 years and this is the best introduction I have seen!
Thumbs up👍🤠
One of the best introductory video’s on fly fishing, I have seen!
I recently inherited my grandfather's fishing gear but haven't been fishing since I was a kid. Looking forward to getting out there.
I feel like I just found an old dusty VHS-fishing tutorial at my grandparents lake-lodge that they remted from their local fishing-store fourty years ago but forgot to return.
What an absolute gem of a video. Unbeatable cozy vibes and super informative. Much love from Sweden!
That is awesome!
“Reverse Double Mocha Spiral Cast”😂 I like mine with a shot of espresso.

Thanks for helping me, this gets me more fun every day now. Thanks again.

What an awesome fundamental video for my new wife and I to get started on our new hobby!!!
Thank you for the awesome video! Really made me realize how easy fly fishing is. I was always intimidated by it but excited to give it a try!
Amelia, That's a perfect start!!! The Jensens must love this one!!! ❤😂
Got a very inexpensive fly pole from Walmart went to a small pond and practice with it it sure had fun.

I wish I had a pond like that in my backyard it’s so nice
Thank you so much for these videos. I caught my first trout today on a Walmart black wooly bugger. I’ll be studying until the next trip!

Also has that look of "What do I do now?" after pulling it a couple of times and it still being stuck.

a five weight rod would be best. the encounter rod/reel/line is a good option
What about the nile tilapia fish? Can i fly cast it in north Africa?
Wholesome

I was recently gifted an old Fenwick 108-10 Rod. Could this still be used to catch small to medium sized fish like bass and trout?

I found a rod that had been left for who knows how long, the case was destroyed but the rod and reel were perfect
just beautiful Tom
No one saw the bear cub in the beginning?
Yeah, we saw it lol.
ok fine, i'll go watch 'A River Runs Through It' again tonight
Grasshoppers didn’t want to volunteer but we volunteered them 😂
Really I just want to eat the fish but it does look enjoyable. 👍
When I heard that first cast and saw it I was like um maybe fly fishing isn’t for me
Pliers and snips two most important tools outside of rod, reel, and tackle. NEVER trust a fisherman without pliers!!!
