Texas Gulf fly fishing for redfish - McFly Angler Saltwater Fly Fishing Episode 77

- Seems like every time I go to corpus, I don't catch many fish. There must be a curse because I will only catch when its either too dark to film properly or the camera dies. Seems like I cannot get any reds or specs on camera. Well either way, I had a blast even though I didn't catch many. It was a lot of fun catching up with one of my longest and best friends. I cannot wait to do it again, even if we don't catch.
I was very happy with the performance of the genesis rod and the Gideon reel. Risen fly makes some amazing gear at reasonable prices. I mean that rod is only $100 and I was making good 80+ foot casts with it. And it is even better priced when you type in my discount code. McFly is the code, and whatever you buy on their site will give you 15% off of anything in their shop. Go too www.risenfly.com to check all the stuff they have out.
I was also using Rio's "winter redfish" fly line which is amazing line for (you guessed it) winter time redfish fishing, also pretty much any type of saltwater fishing. Here is a link to where you can purchase it. amzn.to/2U670gH
Also I reviewed that line once before, if you wanna watch that review. • Rio Winter Redfish Lin...

Nice area to fish. I really like wading just like you do. Sorry you didn’t catch more but still fun hanging with one of your mates.
For sure man, who cares about catching really, it’s all about spending quality time with friends and loved ones.
Jetty fishing on the fly always tough. Good stuff.
Thanks! :). Yeah for sure, just nothing, couldn’t believe not even a bite
“ Indigestion guys.” 😂 😂 😂
It happens…. Lol
Use your OPST out there. I use the OPST line at the coast. Beats the wind with ease. I only use regular tapered line in the flats, but the jetties and shore OPST works well
Cool sounds good
Those jetties can be really good at times. I've broken off a ton of hook points on that railing. Good double haul and a high back cast is the name of the game. Port A jetties is much more fly friendly. I don't agree with the comment about you needing a guide. Plenty of fish to be had in the corpus area, a boat or kayak helps but isn't necessary. Shoot me a pm next time your down and I'll throw you on the bow of the skiff.
Hey cool thanks man! :). Yeah I don’t 100% agree with that you need a guide. I lived in corpus for a few years and caught tons of fish. They are everywhere. Just I keep getting bad luck when I come down. Haha
The fishing is always good. The catching, well maybe not so much.
Lol true words
Very cool great vid . I'm getting ready for some jetty fishing myself.
Awesome! Where at?
@@McFlyAngler oregon coast
Oh cool! Let me know how you do. Keeping away from the corona virus out that way? lol!
@@McFlyAngler lol will do.
We all pay our dues! Thanks for the vid!
Haha! True! Glad you liked it
That’s awesome bro! I was just there a couple weeks ago! Next time let me know and we’ll make a video.
Cool man
Good job
👍
Looks like fun!
yeah I had fun even though I didn't catch. :)
Love Roys
Ya it’s a cool shop with so much there!
Air knots drive me crazy. I bought a disgorger tool with a fine needle to work them apart.
Nice good idea! Yes it drives me nuts also. Haha!
@@McFlyAngler sometimes using just fingers is hopeless.
This is true
We fish the same areas. With the salt it is all about time. Durango is as simple as finding a fish. South Texas you have to have an appointment.
Ok, not sure Durango is “simple” just different for sure.
As "simple" as finding them, lol
Saltwater fish don't have to be as much opportunity feeders and feed only at peak times. It is more difficult.
For sure I feel ya. Yes I rarely didn’t catch fish in Colorado. Rivers and streams are that way. Only a few spots they could be hiding. However time of day, what flies to use, technique all plays into it. I think your right on “finding fish” however I think there might be more technical aspects to river fishing even if you can easily find them. Both are very fun types of fishing and I think both are tough in their own ways. I’ll get the hang of the salt soon. My buddy that I fished with, 3 days later got into a school of bull reds and hooked like 5 of them in a few minutes. I missed it! Haha!
@@McFlyAngler It is difficult to compare but still fun. Those freestones have so few fish comparatively speaking it makes the fishing exceptionally difficult and technical. I love the fishing in Durango. The gulf and bay has millions instead of thousands. Every dog has his day on the salt. On a good day everyone catches fish and pretty much as many as they want.
Nice casting. Ive been in Corpus. It's hard to cast.
Thanks
Hey man awesome video. How far do I need to be able to cast to have a chance at tailing reds?
Great question, depends on the situation. Lol. You just don’t want to spook them, so if you can keep quiet, don’t alert them, I’m sure you can get up to them somewhat close. But you will have greater luck if you can make further casts. I’m limited to about 75’ casts and still be accurate. Some people are amazing and can do 90’ or more and be pin point with it. I think it’s more important to be accurate with a cast than be farther from the fish. Nothing spooks a tailing red faster than a heavy fly kerplunking on their heads.
McFly Angler I’m at right about the 45-50 ft threshold any tips for getting to that next levels
Do you double haul?
looks like a job for a commando head. I know I can always overhead cast that thing like a juggernaut.
Yes same here, but my problem would be fighting fish with that mono line they Have for backing. Too powerful of fish, would cut my fingers. This rio winter redfish did really great though! And I was getting good 80-90’ casts easily into the wind. Towards the end of the day though my casts were getting bad, cause I was getting really tired... haha!
@@McFlyAngler I notice that you reach a bit. Keeping the elbow down would ease the fatigue.
Yeah, into wind, I don’t pretend to be great at casting either. I know I need some work on my casting of heavier rods
I think you could pair commando heads with other shooting line.
Sorta yeah. I’ve always got a good sink tip with me to loop onto any line.
3:32 That's a cool gadget. Have you reviewed it yet?
Gadget? What gadget you mean?
@@McFlyAngler That little nipper thing.
Ohhhhhh haha! Honestly, they are regular old nail clippers I had on my key ring. Small thin for being on a key ring. I forgot to bring my nippers with me, and pulled them off my keys to use. Haha!
Here is a link to them. amzn.to/2viWcUe
My experience fly fishing on the Texas coast is that, during the day, if you don't have a guide, you will catch no fish. None. Under the lights at night? Radically different story.
Yes same here! Tons and tons of fish under lights at night. But your right. Finding fish in the day is tough. I’m poor so I can’t afford a guide. Haha!
Shawn, what line and leader were you using?
I was using a saltwater leader, I think it was 16lb. And a flouro tippet. For line, I put on the Rio winter redfish line. I like it a lot!
With all that space you could cast a 12-15' rod!
You could, but I don’t find much longer than 9’ gives any more benefit in this situation great for roll casting but not much better for regular casting
Fish pass ? Where is that spotless
I can’t say
Yap yap yap yap
Hey u live in corpus
No I don’t, I live in San Antonio.
Brow ur legit
👍 awesome bro thanks!
Your stomach is saying everything. I pack raw meat, raw cheese, and raw eggs on road trips. ;) so I don't have to stop at McPinkSlime or Burger Despot for GMO fries or stop anywhere for that matter with never any indigestion.
I never eat that way anymore. Just had no other choice. Stomach has been doing much better since I’ve been making sauerkraut and other fermented foods. My day consists of eating yoghurt in the mornings, then some type of meet and fermented vegetable for lunch, and dinner is usually something very light, like broccoli and hummus or the like. Occasionally I’ll splurge and make myself a taco for lunch from chicken, creme fresh (I make my own sour cream) ovacado and lettuce, and then drizzle on my own homemade fermented hot sauce. Ohhhh it’s so good! Oh and I put them on corn tortillas not flour. My gut has felt much better since all this. Lost lots of weight (40lbs) and have gotten super strong with more energy, been able to do so much lately.
@@McFlyAngler Good to hear! I honestly think I might just try to eat grasshoppers or road kill before McDs.
Jason Snyder GMO’s actually aren’t bad technically every food we eat is GMOed though selective breeding. It’s reduced world hunger greatly and is actually a very positive thing that has helped to feed a great many people.
