Richard Burton was far more famous than Richard Dawson. In 1973, if you hadn't watched _Hogan's Heroes_ , you probably wouldn't have known who Richard Dawson was.
Wish others would do that. We are coming here to relax, and get away from the world for a while while a few others insist on bringing in their political views. Wish this thing had a block feature.
I just watched These Sue Yannick episodes because Carolyn was there ❤️ but now I am extremely curious to know what was Sue's fate. I just got used to her face 😂 I hope she is still around... She must be in her 70s now
I tried to find any trace of her current status online and could not. I enjoyed watching her a lot and I'm glad she won that much. She was very gracious when she lost. The question she received in round two was almost impossible to get one match on, let alone three. You could see her face drop for a moment when she heard the question, but then her smile and her brave face returned.
People were trying to forget Tricky Sicky as quickly as they could. Similarly, were it to be now (2023) and the name given were "Donald" instead of "Richard", "Duck" would easily trump all other possibilies.
Nick, from my understanding, episodes #7 and #31-#33 were skipped in 1998 as well and I believe along with the Burns and Cuts episode of Match Game PM, the "Queer" episode of the '73 edition were skipped since 2001 and episode #54 of the PM edition where both players scored 6 times before Round 3 was skipped since its last airing in 2002-03ish(sometime before the Love Connection reruns came into the GSN lineup). Can you think of any other specific Match Game episodes that GSN aired before but started skipping prior to the returns of Rafferty Card Sharks and Blockbusters '87 Nick?
Well, #137 of Match Game '74 was last aired in 2000 or not long after the time compressions(aka speed-ups) were introduced. What about #910 and #935 of Match Game '77? Well according to matchgame.org, GSN did air them, but started skipping those episodes since picking up the reruns of Love Connection and Millionaire I think.
As much as i like this show, it seems like a lot of the celebrities are more interested in making a joke with their answer, than giving a good one. ''Do you like me better with or without...my wooden leg???'' What a dick he was for that answer.
It seems like it took a while to come up with panelists who tried to make the match instead of making a gag. Never thought Morey or Jack (Carter) were appropriate for this show. They weren't hip enough to keep up with responses from a young studio audience.
At the quarter mark of MG73 the top 5 money givers are 1. Bert Convy 18,500 dollars, 2. Jo Ann Pflug 8,500 dollars, 3. Betty White 6,000 dollars, 4. Michael Landon and Richard Thomas 5,750 dollars, and 5. Carolyn Jones 3,250 dollars. Total so far for this season is 53,600. Richard Dawson is number 6 with 2,000 dollars and Brett Somers is number 8 (tied) with 250 dollars.
Another semi slow week but yet again Bert beats out Betty, this time to win the week with again 6,500 dollars in head to head and audience match matches. Betty won for the most matches of 16 and gave away 5,500 dollars in head to head and audience match matches. Carolyn gave away 3,250 dollars in head to head and audience match matches and Richard had 9 matches to win for the regulars.
There is free spirit flying. ;0) ROFL! Another fine after dinner episode! :0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Betty! ;0) Hmm how far are we do the full plaid suit and then just the pants with a black jacket. Sigh ;0) Gene rhyme there.. ;0)
Her husband only agreed to appear on the first bunch of episodes if they agree to cast Brett, at least that's how it started. It didn't hurt either that CBS was trying very hard to get people watching the Perry Mason series that they kept plugging in these episodes. It did not work, because their new version of Perdy Mason flopped. Brett only ever appeared in fewer than ten episodes and the series was quickly cancelled. I don't know the details, I only know someone else commented it on UA-cam. Her bantering with Charles, Richard, Betty, and Fannie was also a part of the charm. There wasn't as much zany chaos when Hot Lips and other ladies took Brett's spot on the panel. The chemistry was fun and electric, like a touch of Friar's Club Roast.
It's amazing how sexist people were back then. There is so much good about these warm folks and those times though. It's too bad some people are angry that sexism is out of style...I wonder if they are also angry that wearing a loud plaid sports jacket is now a no no, Lol.
I wonder if the way they joked could truly be called sexist (ism)… I appreciate that there is more awareness today, but I don’t sense any belittlement, or malicious intent in their comments…
Being overly P.C. have hurt the stand-up comic industry.....comics can't tell their jokes 'cuz some lame ass gets offended. It's really a sad state of affairs.
How was it rigged? A question might be dumb or lacking a definitive answer, but the writers and producers had no way of knowing which contestant would get which question, because the challenger picks A or B not knowing which one would ultimately be "easier" or "harder". I actually thought both questions in Sue's final round were rather weak, but Bob got luckier. I don't think Sue was terribly upset - she had $13,000 and a great trip to Europe to look forward to!
Those were the two most vague questions I ever saw on that show. No reasonable answer for either one. There was no set up, like Howard was so old, when he looked in the mirror, or Marilyn was bowling when she lost half of her blank. I can't recall any other times when they asked questions with no set up. They probably told the challenger to pick B and let the chips fall.
I'm surprised he won with Richard Burton when there's another Richard RIGHT THERE!
Well... I'm still glad it worked out for him in the end. :)
Richard Burton was far more famous than Richard Dawson. In 1973, if you hadn't watched _Hogan's Heroes_ , you probably wouldn't have known who Richard Dawson was.
Dawson was my answer to, I didn't think of Burton until he said it.
Well this was 1973 so my response was Nixon.
How about Richard nixon
When he said Burton, I thought that was probably the only other one he could have gotten away with (I'd been thinking either Dawson or Nixon).
These are so fun to watch! These clothes and hair styles are taking me back!
Gene says the whole worlds in trouble but lest go on with the game... wonder what they’d think now?! Lol
Wish others would do that. We are coming here to relax, and get away from the world for a while while a few others insist on bringing in their political views. Wish this thing had a block feature.
I wonder what YOU think now. Wish we could go back three years to when you wrote this.

@@loissimmons6558 I was really happy for her winning so much money. I hope she did well in life. I didn't want to see her go!
Richard doing Ernestine's ( Lily Tomlin) bit from Laugh-In , lol
losing half of her 'weight' and half of her 'body' should have matched.
"howard looked at himself in the mirror and said {who are you?}
tomitstube not really. Losing your weight isn't losing your body, unless a part of parts are somehow removed.
Carolyn's husband at the time was Broadway conductor Herbert Greene (The Music Man). I don't think her book that she plugged was ever published.
She was also married to Aaron Spelling for a time.
5:02…Brett losing it is everything❤😂
I cannot believe that neither one of them thought RICHARD Dawson! And Dawson was sitting right next to her, and right across from Bob.
sometimes the celebrities need to be reminded that they are supposed to TRY and match the contestants. (fur coat and wooden leg . . . come on now)
Betty Whites joke half fast (half assed) went over everyone’s heads.
I'm glad Bob won. Spread the wealth.
Wow! Wonderful winner for that contestant Carolyn! Thank you for your choice in this particular awesome Match Game..
Brett may have been into the sauce before this episode
Clearly! Before, during, and probably after as well
Not only this episode…
I didn't know the term 'headhunter' went back so far.
Herbie Hancock had a hit album with the title and his band at the time were known as Headhunters.
How much of the 13K did Sue get to keep after the taxmen got their share, considering what the income tax rates were back then?
I wonder if Bob saw when Burt flashed his Car answer.
Today I'd spend Sue's winnings on Europe. A college is a black hole these days.
Gene: Marilyn lost half of her blank.
Bert: while doing?
Betty: never mind Bert! 😂😂
wtg , Carolyn !!!
Amazing she didn't say the name of the man sitting next to her!
TISH!!!! YOU SAID BURTON!!!!!!!!!!
Huh. I was shocked that the $500 answer wasn't "snake CHARMER".
Or OIL
I was thinking "snake" oil.
Or snake eyes.
Snake in the grass came to mind when I saw the question, but if I were the contestant, I would've said snake bite.
it's too bad Sue was beaten in this game as the super match question is so easy...
Bobs such a gracious winner!
Yes I wanted him to win
Interesting that at the end they say that Lucie Arnaz will appear on the next episode but they don't show episode 31.
All the smog of LA in the 70's didn't keep people from moving there .
Brett got lit up for this one!
I think she liked being next to Morey!
always super treat to see Betty White 🥰
I wish you wouldn't have had the spoilers in the little blurbs about the show.
Carolyn is just lovely! As pretty as a blonde as she is a brunette.
How was Richard Dawson not the answer? Maybe they told them off camera that they couldn't use that answer.
Why would they do that? No reason too..
Imagine if Bob would have chosen Richard Dawson, and then they asked this question! The mind reels...
$13,000 in 1973 dollars is the equivalent of $90,000 in Dec 2023 dollars!
Sue was a record-breaker, AND a doll baby
Richard Burton? My first guess was Richard Nixon!! He WAS the President then 🤔🙄
People were trying to forget Tricky Sicky as quickly as they could. Similarly, were it to be now (2023) and the name given were "Donald" instead of "Richard", "Duck" would easily trump all other possibilies.

Notice the girls back then don’t cake on make up like they do today. Much better back then
Anytime you go on tv (now or back then) there's a makeup artist to do your makeup. They don't allow you to do your own.
I think you need glasses.
And stop saying untrue things just because they sound romantic.
They have to apply makeup heavily now because of digital TV. The lighting will wash them out if they didn’t.
Yes, women were much sexier then.
Does anyone know if the panelists received extra money if their answers showed up on the match board?
Bob looks like Jim Backus in a thinly veiled disguise.
You're right !

I would have said Zorro for the question involving Jerry wearing a mask.
Are there episodes #31, 32, 33? The next one in list for year 1973 is #34

Some of the earliest question I feel were to general and need a bit more info for a good answer.

Jerry wore a mask because he was a reasonable citizen who valued the lives of others
That's complete BS

Watching this show, I've learned that women used to be much, much more attractive. What happened?
feminism happened
In 1973, the average weight of the adult U.S. woman was 130 lbs. Today, it's 170 lbs. Plus the tats, face piercings and Kool aid hair.
Also remember there was a screening process that probably created an atmosphere favorable for better looking, mostly younger white woman.
Good lord, I can't understand how Brett was made a regular. She never seems to match anybody! Her answers are from way out in left field.
Jack Klugman must've had a lot of pull to get her on the show. She mellowed in later years but early on she was a pia.
Her husband only agreed to appear on the first bunch of episodes if they agree to cast Brett, at least that's how it started.
