    I have the RED bezel version of this Promaster FUGU Collection and I simply love it! The bezel design is really nice and the grip feels good, also the lovely puffer fish 🐡 on the back is very cool! For this price point to have a sapphire crystal and 200 meters of water resistance with ISO certification is something else… well done CITIZEN 👏🏻

    I have the Promaster ecodrive version. Great watch,love everything about it. This looks like it would wear too big for a small wrist, but definitely have to give Citizen lots of love and respect.

    I have just recently purchased an eco drive watch; the Promaster sailhawk, and it is just amazing. I am a dive instructor so all the functions, especially the timer are super useful to me. I feel just as confident diving with it as a true diver, it is so awesome.

    Nice review Ted. About time someone like you gave the Citizen brand a recognition it deserves and putting it on the collectors/enthusiasts map. I just recently held a few of these divers in my hands at my local jewellers and they feel no less in quality and quantity than its various Swiss and Japanese counterparts.
    While I got you could you please do a review on
    SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SRQ037J1? Would be interested in your thoughts.
    Cheers mate.

    They really need to put the highbeat 9015 movement in these to get more sales to watch enthusiasts. Got the quartz instead as it is just as jerky as the 8200 movement and is more accurate being quartz.

    It doesn't look like they're listening because they had a great watch with the 42mm Fugu, they just needed to slap sapphire on it. Instead they came out with this bigger 44mm version and didn't extend the seconds hand to the chapter ring, instead they left a big gap between it and the chapter ring, unlike the 42mm version which has no gap.

    Are these the new edition? I've seen these watches for a few years now, but I never knew they have sapphire glass. When I looked at Citizen's website, they do bear different ref. number, with a pretty significant price jump also. Way more expensive than the "comparable" Seiko Prospex.

      @brianmsahin 2 роки тому +14

      @@MercilessGuitar151 Crush might not be the best word to use there! Lol. But you're right!! It does add to the cost. I suppose the sapphire is really just for the anti scratch resistance. I dive myself and have a couple of Citizens, the mineral glass on one of them is fine but the other one took a big scratch across the face from a rock outcrop. I was able to change it out, but for divers scrabbling around on the ocean floor, sapphire is offering that extra protection.

    Yeah...they got everything right but the size. Come on, just use your 41mm 20mm lug width case! The original 41mm ProMaster wears so good, and way better than the SKX or Seiko 5. As it is, at 44, I have no interest in it. Like at all.

      I agree. Looking at all these reviewers praising these things, and it's like... They literally had the perfect sized watch case for a diver and they beefed it up for no reason. So that makes me not interested in it at all. If they had kept the original dimensions I probably would have gotten one.

    • @thomasdavis8117
      @thomasdavis8117 2 роки тому +6

      Hey y'all some of us just have larger wrists than you do and really do appreciate the existence of larger divers. I wear a 43mm diver and it fits me about the same as a 40mm diver fits the slender wrists of the average watch reviewer. Just because it isn't for you doesn't mean it's for no one.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 2 роки тому +2

      @@thomasdavis8117 And you have plenty of options. Mainstream options. Just when watches were starting to get smaller, here they go getting bigger again. And what makes this worse is they took away a 41mm option and replaced it with a 44. The market quite simply is oversaturated with divers catering to your wrist size. Citizen had a perfectly sized one, they just lacked colors and specs. When they finally release a model with colors and updated specs, gone is the perfect size and it's beefed up. That's the issue.

    • @thomasdavis8117
      @thomasdavis8117 2 роки тому +1

      @@caomhan84 there is no such thing as a perfect size as there is so much variation in taste and wrist size and I would argue the market leans towards 40mm divers in the style of the submariner more than it does for large divers. I'm sorry this watch isn't for you but there are literally so many options for 40mm divers and fewer than you think in this size. Again just because it isn't for you doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who appreciate the upsize.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 2 роки тому +2

      @@thomasdavis8117 I'll have to disagree with you about where the market is trending. Because I've observed over the last 20 years where it's gone and it's definitely gone larger. Again, my issue is less with this being a size "for me" and more about them deleting a size and replacing it with a bigger one. Which has been a trend in almost every company from Seiko to Omega and even Rolex (Even the submariner has gotten beefy in the last 7 years). When I said mainstream options, I mean mainstream companies that are easy to buy from. Microbrands don't really count because they aren't easy to buy from. Micro brand watches are not readily available.

Although the movement is different, on the dial it says 8203, I guess they had extra dials and cases and built a few of them.

    I bought the NY0040 black dial and full lume dial, both under $200. Seikos may look more attractive at first, more flashy. But Citizen, once you acquire a taste for them, I think have a more understated and timeless beauty, The black dial of the NY0040 is so legible, and a beautiful inky, glossy deep black. The full lume is nice, on a generic bracelet, but it is less legible, as Teddy said, it blends in with the dial. The Fugu, actually has more legible hands, longer and with a more defined outline. Both the Fugu and NY0040 series have a case larger than the bezel of 1 or 2 millimeters. So the actual dial look smaller than expected.
    I had the SKX007 years ago, but I did not like the flat hour markers and dial. The NY0040 looks more interesting. I have the Eco-Drive BN0151, which is nice and has a better bezel. But the dial of the automatic watches is definitely nicer.
    The Seiko watches I really like retail for $1000 or so, I find Citizen's offerings in the sub 500 USD more appealing.

  • @CombatRat
    @CombatRat 2 роки тому +16

    In my opinion, Citizen needs to limit the use of 8 series movements to lower end watches, maybe $250 max. They should be putting 9 series movements in these watches. Frankly, if I were running Citizen, I'd completely phase out the 8 series movements and fully invest in the 9 series to increase production and in turn, lower the cost.
    Sure, the 8 series movements are technically on par with Seiko's 4R movements, but Citizen should over deliver by using the 9 series. There's not the same brand equity for Citizen automatics as for Seiko automatics, so going with a superior movement would help steal sales from Seiko.
    Also, the size seems too big. I'd expect that Citizen will be adding to it's offerings to better attract those preferring more moderately sized watches.
    All of that said, it is great to see Citizen returning to automatics in the US.

      Strongly disagree,the 8 series is literally one of the most robust,most proven movements in the world,it's been around since 1977 and most users report excellent accuracy and incredible durability

    6 weeks ago I received this very nice watch in titanium. At + 120 seconds per day, it ran too fast. Unfortunately it will take at least 8 weeks until I get my watch back from Citizen Service Center. I hope!

    Sweet watch. Need a 40 to 42 mm. As a tech Diver I logged over 200 deep dives with citizen. Every serious or wanna be diver I knew had one of the various models with built in depth gauge!

    This looks great, a few drawbacks, but great. For one at over $500 I'd have liked to have seen a milled clasp. I'd also like to see a smaller version as well, especially for those of us who like the styling though can't accommodate a watch this size. Fantastic work with the review and it's nice to see more affordable pieces on the channel.

      Just buy the older version. It's 41.5mm and cost around £150. There are some for £172 on Amazon t the mo & some on ebay for £180. I got mine for £163 Jan with the 8204 movement

    500+ $ with no milled clasp and a miyota 8000 series lol come on man that's embarrassing. You have 250$ watches with 9000 series or pt5000s. This is a non starter. Another example of big brands trying to get away with overcharging for subpar watches. I'd go micro brand no contest.

    Teddy - what is the second language on the day wheel on these? Kinda bummed that I bought limited edition fully lumed dial fugu NY0138-14X not long ago and then they basically release the same watch (NY0155-58X).

    Excellent review Teddy, good looking watches, I have a couple of the older ones and still in regular diving use. Sapphire is adding to the price as someone here mentioned, but having scratched one of mine on a rock outcrop I think on balance the extra cash to get sapphire is a good idea. Still, they are probably leaning a bit towards the expensive side for what they are. I imagine that deals will be available further down the road, so might not be necessary to pay full retail. I got a $110 off a Seiko Prospex with sapphire recently in a Seiko AD in Istanbul (fully lined up, I only buy Seiko's I can inspect!) so it might be worth waiting a bit to see if any bargains appear.

      Sapphire is available on watches at £90. This is three times that. It’s just bad form not being sapphire

    I have never understood how the dive watches got so mainstream. I don't dive. I have no use for a dive watch. They are bulky and ugly to me.
    I own one bnib dive watch and I have never worn it. I know it's me but I honestly don't understand the appeal.

    I got the 42mm Fugu in 2018, I haven’t had a better driver on my 6.5” wrist, it’s just perfect with slender lugs and that non-angular case shape that just melts on the wrist.
    I wouldn’t swap it for a 44mm for sure.

    Asian FUGU divers have even worse clasp. Finally…it’s about time. However, stop making watches so big. I have an 8” wrist, and I still prefer 40-42mm diameters. My oldest dive watches are Citizen’s. They last forever. I wish there were more options for bracelets. To me the one flaw in their designs has always been bracelets. Teddy, great video. Thanks for the efforts.

    The review I've been waiting for. As a Citizen fan with a BN0150 and a BJ7111-51M in my collection, I was keen to see Teddy's review. On the whole, I like the look of this new range, however, upgrade the crystal and downgrade the clasp is a mistake. I think I'd struggle with the accuracy too, my Citizen Quartz models and my 16 year old Planet Ocean beat it. The one I'm really looking forward to is the Citizen Challenge Diver, which I believe is being released in the summer.
