ASMR Restoration of a broken japanese diving watch - Citizen Promaster automatic NY0040

  • This time I´m restoring a Citizen Promaster automatic.
    It´s a japanese diving watch, waterproof up to 200 metres and powered by the citizen 8203A caliber.
    The watch is in a bad condition: The stainless-steel-case is damaged, the glass is not original, glass and bezel are scratched and the movement is not running. As I try to wind-up the movement it winds-down immediately. Seems like an issue on the escapement-wheel.
    A tooth and the pivot of the escapement-wheel is broken, i need to replace it. As well as the glass, the glass-gasket, the click-spring, the movement spacer and the bezel. After everything is cleaned, sanded and polished I can restore the brushed surface of the case and re-assemble the movement with some fresh oil. After that, this watch is in an awesome beat (+4 seconds per day) again.
    I hope you liked this restoration, if so, like, comment and subscribe ;)

    I worked for Citizen back in the 90s as a sales rep, just as they were starting to get a name. Dive watches put them on the map.
    I walked into a jewelry store one day, introduced myself and said I am from Citizen Watch Co.......the owner thought I was with some sort of neighborhood watch program. He had yet to hear about the watch co. Good times.

    That watch looked like it was put through hell. Yet, it didn't show any signs that water made it through to the mechanism. It was bone dry. That says something about the quality of the watch. Glad I own one. It keeps very accurate time.

    Fantastic job! You created a new NY0040. I personally would have only cleaned it, restored it mechanically, and replaced the glass. And then I would have left it in the rough state it was in. I really love the wabi sabi aesthetics of objects that have suffered and stood the test of time.

    • @garethessex

  • @princeps9637

    I admit to had suffer a little bit at the beginning, thinking that mine could have the same faith. I simply love this watch! if anyone's wondering, the model is NY0040, and it actually exists in many varieties, as for example the NY0085. Definitely a good purchase if you ask me. Sturdy, cheap and well-performing movement fir its price.. An alternative in the past was the old Seiko SKX013 and the SKX007, but since they stopped the production the price doubled making it less appealing.
    PS Interesting fact about the watch used in the video: it was actually given to the navy soldiers in Italy years ago, without the name "Citizen" but "Marina Militare" written in its place and no red painting on the dial, only white.

    • @alessioseminara3254
      @alessioseminara3254 2 роки тому +5

      Navy soldiers? No they were way way more than that, they were the FIRST navy frog-men, Italian navy create this group back in 1920 to sunk the British royal navy with a a group of immense brave soldier like Teseo Tesei and others who perform legendary war actions destroying many warships without even let the enemy understand where the attack came from with never seen amphibious skills in a war. And today after they helped usa to build their navy seals and trained many sas squad and many others special op group from all nations knocking at their door, they are still the best with 1/100 of the money and equipment that their similar colleagues in usa or gb are granted. Their name is Comsubin, GOI Incursori della Marina militare Italiana:"E fluctibus irruit in hostem".

    That's an outstanding and a real fine partisanship, Red Dead.
    I've the same NY0400 in gold where the gold has worn out to a stainless steel brass patina esp on the bezel.
    I asked Citizen in my country to service but they said they couldn't because the parts were not available (about 5 years ago). Hopefully, with the resurgence of interest in this watch through the FUGU, the parts will be available again.
    Its inspired me that I can get my watch internally restored, glass and O-ring changed, and the bezel insert (if available) changed. And yet possibly still retain the worn patina in the original bezel.
    Thanks for sharing and inspiring. Keep up the amazing work!

      I understand. I got an NY0086, which is only sold in the European market a couple months ago, and broke the stem and the crown. I was not able to find the signed crown anywhere in the US. I sent it to the Citizen Authorized watch maker in Texas, and he was able to find NOS gold plated crown and stripped it for me. I presume I would need to send the watch back to a European dealer to get the OEM signed crown. I don't think you can get those FUGU parts here in the US, either. Maybe if you have the connections in Asia. Anyway, superlative video. I wonder if it would be more cost effective to replace the entire movement - they are only $50US?

    @ 17:21 you can see small barnacles in one of the notches on the bezel which means the watch spent some time submerged in the sea.
    It was possibly salvaged which might explain some of the damage.

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 3 роки тому

      @@jiboo6850 Most of the worst damage is on and around the face which makes me think the owner died while wearing it, there is no damage on the back or sides. The internal evidence of violence suggests the owner had a violent death, the barnacles are very small so it cannot have been in the water more than about 4 weeks.
      Possibly a plane crash, who knows ? It's strange to see something like that being restored.

      It was SpongeBob ś watch 🙂

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 3 роки тому

      @@panosvrionis8548 Barnacles grow quickly, once they find somewhere to settle they can produce a hard ring of protective shell in a few days which they expand from the base. The barnacles on that bezel show that has been happening for a couple of weeks or so because they have a cone structure and judging by their size which must be less than 1mm they are in the early stages of growth which is when they where growing at a fast pace.
      There is no way of telling how long the watch was in the water before the barnacles took hold but it can happen in a week or so but of course could take much longer. The fact that there are only a small number in one location indicates that they must have taken hold very soon after the watch entered the water, if it had been in the water for many months then you would expect to see many more barnacles on the watch in various stages of growth.
      They have no problem attaching to stainless steel that has a fine layer of algae or slime on it from being in the water, this algae can take just a few days to grow, especially in pockets or notches on the steel.
      So my estimate of a few weeks in the water is based on what you can see and on there only being the one small group of small barnacles, I would not expect to see such a small group in just the one place if that watch had been submerged for any longer.
