Fun fact: when the italian navy was looking for a new watch for their special forces (COMSUBIN), they only accepted ISO-divers with -500m.
So Citizen send their standard NY0040 with a new dial (saying 500m instead of 200m) - and won.
The COMSUBIN used it for a decade.
When it is good enough for these guys, it sure is good enough for me... :)
Love this!!!!
Really?..Cooool.. I love little 'Factoids' like this when it comes to Watches, You ain't gonna get a better Selling point for a Watch nerd than 'Special Forces Approved'.
I have some great deals on Italian rifles. They’ve only been dropped once!
I really want this to be true!! 💪🏼😅👍🏼
The Urban Gentry did a really good video on this ,(the Marina Militare’s choice) about Citizen.
I missed the boat on an affordable SKX, so I instead picked up a blue Citizen NY0040. It was my first automatic watch and my first dive watch. This year, I picked up a jubilee-style bracelet from Long Island Watch and now it's prefect. I'll never get rid of it. I've always been a fan of Citizen. I'm happy to see more reviews!
Exactly the same as me, grabbed the blue NY as I’d missed the SKX boat. And I’m glad I did miss that boat
Anyone remember when a SKX was well under a hundred quid in 1996
I thought the same thing I never was super into the SKX because of the outdated movement I really could care less about hacking, but I do like the hand winding. I actually ended up getting an SKX later on this year, but I actually bought the citizen watch. I still believe the citizen has a better watch having Been able to enjoy both of them
Ok, newer watch guy here. Can somebody tell me what hacking is and why I care about it?
@@davidbennett4395 A watch movement that hacks means that when you pull the crown out to set the time, the seconds hand stops. Some older or more privative movements do not hack. The benefit is that you can set your watch very precisely. Another benefit is that you can turn the hands forward or backward. If the seconds hand does not hack, you should avoid turning the hands back in time.
I have a pro master diver. Wearing it now. Automatic movement is very accurate. Love it.
Your a gem, not only do you give excellent information but you cheer me up, thank you.
Thank you my friend!!

I recently bought the citizen NY0130-08E 'Fugu' ,it has a yellow chapter ring and is a 44mm watch but wears like a 42mm ,one of the best watches pound for pound I've bought and I own some expensive watches, but the citizen is a solid no nonsense diver 😊
This chap is off his rocker! But in a good way, i smile all through his videos! Definitely the most down to earth original watch reviewer on the net, and the only one I'd sit down with and have a few beers!!!
Keep up the good work, and thanks for making me smile! Oh, I'd choose the stainless steel one also, which i do own sitting next to the SKX.
Yours is BY FAR the most entertaining channel on UA-cam!
I have a pro master diver solar powered. I've had it in the Atlantic Ocean Numerous times, pools, lakes, dinner parties, movies, weddings, parties, etc... love it.
Ah, so you're finally getting into Citizen! To me it is one of the best value watch brands out there. Seiko is long gone as the value king and Citizen has a better and more affordable alternative for pretty much every Seiko. This NY0040s or the more expensive Fugus for the discontinued SKX, the incredible NB1050 (sapphire, duratect, 4hz movement, pins and collars, etc) for the long gone SARB033 or the current Presage range, the Tsuyosa for 200ish bucks is certainly better than every Seiko 5 out there, etc. They have pretty much eerything you can expect in the Eco Drive range - be it diver's (that cost 200ish bucks and not 500 like the solar dive watches from Seiko), field watches, chronographs, GMTs, whatever....and all of them are pretty affordable. They also have very cool out-of-the-box dive watches like the Aqualand JP2000 (a true icon! and then again I'd say superior to a Seiko Arnie and costing half of it), the Orca, the Ecozilla (I'd say that it is a great alternative to the solar Tunas). They have some cool bullhead chronos as well (quartz and JDM excluvies tho). They just released 4hz automatic true GMTs for around 1k. They are masters in working with titanium and with the duratect coatings. I could go on...
@tiagodvt
What a load of utter garbage.
Shite U write, just like all Seiko haters
Idiot
If you want a mechanical watch seiko beats citizen in every way. If you want quartz or solar citizen beats seiko. Its about preference neither is objectively better than the other.
@anton0529 I disagree. On the lower end, Citizen offers way better watches than Seiko. Even with mechanical movements. They have true dive watches for 200ish bucks, Seiko doesn't. They have integrated bracelet watches for 200bucks, with sapphire and bracelets and solid links (with the Seiko 5 you get hardlex and folded links). These days you have to spend well over 1k to get a proper Seiko, unfortunately. And I'm not even gonna talk about their QC problems. Their days are long gone, sadly. Used to love the brand and it was Seiko that made me fall in love with watches back in the day. I still own 4 of them. But I don't think I'll buy another in the near future.
I bought an NY-0040-17L a month or so ago. It’s a fantastic watch. I love the retro look of it and its pedigree. I also bought mine on Jomashop when they were doing a sale. $159 for a great diver with the credentials to back it up.
I have a jdm citizen pro master and I love it! Perfect alignment and immaculate finishing on the case! Love the accuracy and grab and go appeal of the eco drive over my automatics!
I recently purchased the eco drive Promaster and really like it. I’d go with the stainless one if choosing another Promaster. Great video. Have a great day!
I just got a Citizen cb5860-19e and I'm thrilled with it - under £300 from some retailers at the moment - Sapphire Glass - 316L Steel - Chrono and Alarm function - 200m WR and best of all its Radio Controlled. Just put it on my wrist and everything sets itself automatically, even DST, Brilliant! (I still love my sexy Seiko Arnie reissue though:-)))
Currently wearing the old ny0040.. tested to 500m for the Italian navy.. absolute beast.. one of my top 5 ‘apocalypse’ watches
Citizen is now what Seiko was, and that is cool
Let's be honest, Citizen was killing it with their dive watches.
A Citizen NY0040 was my daily driver and only watch all through my 20s.
I got the SKX too at first, but I've always wanted the Citizen too which also has a bit of pedigree as it was used by the Marina Militare as TGV always points out. So I did the same with the Flightmaster and got the Nighthawk, etc...Citizen makes amazing pieces, I love them as much as I love Seiko, they're the dependable younger brother and Seiko is the older wilder brother who's found success but it's getting a bit cocky moving upmarket.
I recently bought the new grey dialled Citizen Promaster BN 0167-50H. It has all the same characteristics as your titanium watch but it's stainless steel with the extending milled clasp and the screw down crown is at the 4 o'clock position. I love it.
Better Bezel than an Omega, if this was £200 with a sapphire I would buy it, but as it stands il still buy it anyways lol
You will be buying the NY0141-10L then 👌
They have Fugu limited models that go with sapphire! I am considering to buy one soon :)
@@FPC588The only drawback (for some) might be a slightly larger case. Anyway, it suits my wrist perfectly.
I actually still own the SKX009 but just recently purchased the Citizen’s NY0086 and love this watch. Wearing now as a matter of fact . I still love my SKX009 but I gotta say this NY0086 is amazing 🤩
I gotta be honest mate. When I first saw one of your videos. You bloody irritated me!
But you’ve won me over and I really love your content and on screen character!
I am enjoying your video here in Barcelona while it is finally raining, super! The titanium would be my choice by the way
I got the Seiko SRPG61 with the cement dial for $168 no tax, discounts /free shipping. 100m water resistance “diver style” is more than enough!
I love Citizen. They’re outstanding!
354K likes AFTER 35 minutes?!?!? Holy cow! 🎉 I just ordered one of the 37mm Promaster’s for the wife. I’ve had a steel and a super titanium from Citizen for years. The Titanium is really good. That coating does a great job! For the record, I’m left handed, and I STILL flip it upside down to wind. 😂
Love when you say "Hello" with the small doll hand. It's the best part of your videos. Greetings from Murcia, Spain. You are the best reviewing watches. Un abrazo maquina. Ya esperando el siguiente.
The NY0085-86E has been my beater for the last three years, love this watch, there's just something very endearing about it. It's well made and wears really well. The bracelet is often slagged off for its rolled links and perceived cheapness, I disagree with this, it's pretty sturdy and not a hair puller. And the on the fly adjustment system is reliable and a godsend in the Summer months. What's not to love.
Can’t get over the crown on the “wrong” side🤷🏼♂️. I own the eco drive version, and it is a heavy weight beater- it can take everything and chew it! It is not the loveliest piece in my collection. But it is not intended to..
I bought an Orient Ray Vintage Diver a few months ago so I think I’m set for now, but it’s pretty impressive to see this much variety for watch lovers. We’re in the golden age of watches.
Pretty chuffed. Ok, ciao!
Really nicely done review. Now, I have to buy the stainless version! Love that splash of red on the bezel and I need a bracelet during these balmy days of summer.
Titanium is also for people who need to wear hypoallergenic watches or they get nasty itchy blister rashes.
I cant wear stainless steel or gold plated watches, i need to clear coat the back of a case if it is steel. After market straps, Nato straps and Titanium watches are my world 😐
I´d go stainless for the price! I already did... But a Solar powered quartz with black bezel and dial with the bonus of the crown on the right side... ☺ And mine also has waaayyy better bracelet with an awesome milled clasp.
Titanium can be polished but it takes a really long time to get it to mirror polish . And if they did polish it id expect it to cost more .
It's amazing he's just now finding out about all these great watches that alot of us have known about and also alot of us have owned for years. It's cool he's finally finding out about all these watches. I thing we should put in the comments all these classic watch that have Been out for years so can look into them. Lately I've been getting the feeling he very unaware of alot of the well know classics.
‘HE’?? Who do you think sees the comments straight away numbnutz? Did I ever say I was an expert????? Did I ever say I’ve seen them all????? What would the point of carrying on if I did????? I’m here to learn every week! Get this!! I review watches I’ve never held or worn before!!! That’s how you learn and experience new things!!!! What I would say , due to me being very lucky for the last couple of years I’ve been privy to seeing a lot of watches . It still doesn’t change the fact if you had this watch next to an SKX I’d still choose the Seiko?!?!! But it doesn’t stop me from experiencing does it. ‘HE’
They are like you humble tools in your garage. My old Dremel isn't fancy, has zero bling compared to new models, and is still made exactly the same boring gray color. But it works. And these watches are similar. Not fancy, simple construction, meant to just work.
Though, yes, their lume is odd. If I was an actual diver, I'd get the Ecodrive model of this with the rubber band and better second hand ( BN0163-00H or similar) for a little more money. The reason divers use those bands is they never slide around on a wet suit or fall off if bumped and are a cheap replacement item.
EDIT - the BN0151-09L is the same thing in a more understated blue. Upgrading to the Ecodrive, better strap, and better second hand is a must for actual divers. But as a fashion watch for the rest of us who will just swim around with it, this reviewed model is nice enough. :)
I'll always have one of those in my collection, my favourite watch of all
Really interesting comparison MWC. I’m with you on not being that into titanium. I know a lot of watch enthusiasts love a bit of Ti but it does nothing for me unfortunately.
Awesome show as ever 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Gareth!! It’s one in the bank
Ti is so last year...have you tried Coltan? 🤔
Great episode. My choice is the steel Eco-Drive Promaster model BN0151. Crackin' good watch on a rubber strap, love the blue dial and I got it new for $123 US (grey market). It's been my favorite watch this summer. Has taken a beating and not a mark on it so far. Cheers!
BN0151
Two unpopular opinions - 1) 60 click bezels are better than 120 click bezels, 2) The "cheap" stainless steel Citizen bracelet is awesome. I've got an NY0040 and an NY0086 Pepsi. Together they were less than $400, and they are my favorite watches.
I almost 90% agree!;)
I like Citizen. My Nighthawk is one of my favorite watches. And I do SCUBA dive so I want a real dive watch. Honestly, I'm ok with a quartz or Eco-Drive dive watch. It's a tool. My daily watches are automatics. But for diving I don't care if its mechanical or not.
The 8 o-clock crown is a feature I wish all watches had. I wear my watch on me left wrist and a 3 or 4 o-clock crown always digs into my wrist.
For those people who would rather die than scratch their watch best not use your seatbelt. Disclaimer, use your seatbelt!
This Guy is funny. He says true things but it also makes me smile
Great show, Russ. Liked the written dimensions on the screen. And liked you with a watch on each wrist, like a gun slinger with a double six shooter rig! ☺ "Don't like this one? BAM! Here's another one!"
Citizen are solid watches and great ISO divers. Just bought the steel version after watching the show. Thanks for the great review!
I love my Promaster NY-0086 pepsi. I wear it on a single-pass NATO or perlon strap. I've regulated it to about -2spd. Love it.
Lol just bought this citizen at the best price a month ago and loving it. But then I bought a Seagull 1963 a few days ago. And now that’s my new love.
You convinced me that it's great value. I just ordered the stainless steel model.
I got a black and red pro master. I think I got it brand new with tags for under $180 eBay. Definitely don't regret the purchase
I’m a lefty so the crown being there is a novelty bonus to me.. and its signed too😱
I got the NY0141 which looks exactly the same (except 4 being blue) for ~200€ and that’s got sapphire
I'd get the stainless steel on rubber strap and stick it on a quality rubber strap or NATO strap.
I put mine on a nice color matched FKM tropic. Love it and very comfortable.
There are so many versions of this watch 😅 I own a 44mm steel one with sappire glass and green lume with 120 clicks. Think mine is about 250€ could be also an alternative for some people. I love it as my daily watch 😊 and it wears much more than a 42mm instead of it's true 44mm.
My recommendation is the aqua land citizen, pro master diver. It’s always been my go to free dive watch because it has a depth sensor.
put the black one on a black NDC strap and you got yourself the ultimate military dive watch look
Ooooo yes!!!!
Have mine on the blue dial and with rubber strap. Hell of a watch!
SuperTitaimum is very similar to the stuff LiquidMetal Technologies makes in that it's a titanium that can be molded like steel, but then they treat it to have similar exterior hardness as pure titanium. The only real downside is heat resistance suffers a lot. But... we're talking lowering the melting point to still above aluminum. Lol. The advantage is of course, a lot less weight and zero issues with stress fatigue. What is interesting is that this technology seems to be used mostly in things like golf clubs, phones, and watches and not obvious things like automobiles. Which manufacturers love to use aluminum or carbon fiber on and ARE prone to stress related issues over time.
Still.. I, like MWC, do love my stainless steel. It's cheap and works well.
Citizen is a huge conglomerate, there is just thousand of watches to choose and so much variations.
This year series8 batman is probably watch of the year for me,you need to get your hands on one of those for review.
Btw,most of Citizens with left crown are automatic while those with right crown are solar.
Id love titanium watches but Id get the stainless steel just for the on the fly adjustment. A feature that should be on every braceleted watch these days IMO. It just makes wherein a braceleted watch such a better experience.
I bought the Coke version for 200 euros and I really like them. Best bang for the buck for sure. Nice looking proper tool watch. The best Seiko diver is Citizen Promaster hahaha.
Great review! I keep eyeing the steel version. I’m sure I’ll cave in one of these days! Also, if you’re looking to upgrade the bracelet, Marc at Long Island Watch is selling bracelets for them now.
Bought the coke you have on the rubber strap and absolutely love it🤟
I had a pepsi and the green hulk you reviewed here. I also would go for the stainless steel. You have noticed the differences in bracelets. The watch case itself, Ti is also a tad thicker and chunkier. I know because I tried to fit the stainless bracelet on the Ti. I noticed the difference.
How do you only have 80k subscribers! I've only just discovered your videos - they're brilliant!
I own the SKX009 since 2017 and I love everything about it except that movement…I do enjoy the wrist times I spend with it though.
I have that exact coke bezel citizen and use it when I swim in our local lake. Also jumped off a 50 foot cliff (into water) with it and like you said it’s a proper tool watch. I just wish the bracelet didn’t grab my hairs as much.
Nice to see Citizen getting some love. Do you reckon youll get a Series 8 GMT to look at soonish?
As a left hand watch wearer..I like the crown on the left..less likely to dig into your wrist when bending your wrist.
🇺🇸 🏴
my brother in law had this watch over a decade ago its glass was broken and he kept aside in a closet never bothered again and recently i found this watch and still working fine
Tried on the prodiver with the lume dial the other day and I’m in love. It’s was shocked how well it wore on my baby a$$ wrist!
Another informative and entertaining video!
That "scratch test" hurt my soul lol. It was more of a gouge test :X
I love it when you say dialtime!!!!😂😂😂😂 greetings from austria
I've got the Titanium NY01000-50XE as I am allergic to nickel and in the summer time if I wear a 316L watch I can have a skin reaction to the stainless... I wish the had made a black starburst dial Ti version to some extent.
I've recently started getting 'The Hots' for a couple of Citizens, I dunno why, but I've always gave them a swerve tbh, maybe it's my tastes changing in My old age?.. not sure.. but now?.. I do fancy a couple of 'em.
Someone got a fugu bug... Best tool watch after the SKX discontinuation. The original ny004(x) series with the updated movment are still the ones going for tho...
I bought the blue eco drive one. It is excellent.
I have the white one . Bracelet scratches like crazy and the bezel. Literally scratches from looking at it. You can hear the automatic movement wind up from a mile away. But looks lovely 😍 so I guess I'm happy and unhappy at that same time
I guess this titanium thing has the famous TICC . That coating usually keeps the watch looking like new for ages - unless you're mad :-)
Thanks for the video. Enjoyable as always. Dollar for dollar, I would buy an Aragon DM4 over this watch.
I missed the SKX, so I got a Turtle. Love love love the Turtle. 3 months later I got a Samurai. The Sammy is my most loved watch. ❤😂
As far as Citizen is concerned; i have the BN0151 and I like it a lot, but its not really in my rotation.
I want one so so much.... It'll prove invaluable when I'm doing the washing up!
For me the SKX and the NY00xx are like stepbrothers. So, owning a SKX007, I'll have a NY0086 (Pepsi with dark blue dial) as my personal Christmas goodie this year (maybe an Islander bracelet too).
And yes, I'm team stainless steel. 🤷♂
I'm sure one of these would grow on me if I was given one as a gift, but so many design aspects of this model just don't appeal. Also, I'd never pay extra for titanium to save the weight of a fairly advanced Casio. I don't feel the 20 grams of my F-91W, and barely feel the 33 grams of my WV-59J Wave Ceptor.
I hope you don’t mind I mentioned you in my little channel on UA-cam. I don’t sell anything. Any tips would be appreciated. Your show is my favourite
excellent expertise… so I will take the metal version 👍
Citizen also makes a more expensive Promaster diver watch NB6021-68L with the 9052 movement, sapphire crystal, and Super Titanium for $1000 USD. Jomashop currently has the watch for $549 which is very close to half price. At that price I would gladly buy one. For whatever reason I have always liked a lot of those Seiko Prospex diver watches more than what Citizen has to offer. Nothing wrong with Citizen watches but sometimes they feel a bit boring.
I am not a dive watch guy, but there's something about these Citizens, even their Eco-drive equivalents. They look like they belong on a diver's wrist, as opposed to, say, a Submariner or Pelagos.
I enjoyed this review i had a few laughs. The bezel face was hilarious 😅
Definitely the lume should be on the tip of the seconds hand because you know…the divers like to time their death to the second 😂
Great comparison. I must attest, YES, that lume pip on the back end of the seconds hand is a hardcore "L" and a real head-scratching design choice. Seiko DressKX has entered the chat.
I own and love both these watches. Not a huge fan of green but it works in this watch I think.
BIG question, will we be seeing a review of the sexy af new Casio 1100D any time soon???
Cestrian dive 2. Sapphire, 300m, super lume, reliable nh35 auto, £150. Fair play if you want the official dive cert though.
I like ti watches. Easy choice for me. I only have two citizen divers.
A steel eco drive promaster on a blue rubber strap. Handsome tool watch.
The other a bit uncommon. Orange ti promaster eco drive. Really nice finished ti watch. I have it on a blue canvas strap. The sixty click bezel on both? Not my favorite. Seems quirky
My only complaint on these is the lume on the hands. Little spotty on mine.
I love this style.. i have same Green Dial Super Titanium 50° anniversary Citizen.. i love IT!! my summer Watch 😛
Back in the day, this or a Chronosport was the choice if you wanted a functional watch that actually was waterproof without breaking the bank. Most "resistant" watches that claim 50m or 100m are really good for 1/10th of that in repeated use. We've all had "50m" cheaper watches simply fail after a few hours in the local swimming pool. Let alone actual diving or the ocean. But then things got.. expensive and fancy and trying to chase the big brands sometime in the 90s. With lots of fake clones that couldn't actually be used as a tool. At half the price of the titanium model and just as functional, it's a solid winner and now on my own short list.
I got a Citizen Promaster BN0080-05L 300m water resistant for just under £110. Was listed as £299.
Thanks for another great video. Happy to see that you are getting into citizen watches now . But I would rather buy Orient Mako 3 over this citizen. Still love my Eco-Drive promaster though
Very great review, Russ! I like the approach in contrasting these two watches. Either is probably a good choice, in particular if you ditch the bracelet for a quality rubber strap. As a semi-professional diver I can hand-on-heart say that when I dive I am not trusting my life to a spring, fading lume and a dodgy bezel pip, haha. But for timing your snacks during your surface interval? Steel for sure :-)
I noticed the hands are different on the titanium.
