I love that the crown is on the left side. I'm a lefty and wear my watches on my right hand. Right handed crowns eventually destroy the cuffs of my dress shirts.

I've heard they do that to get the crown out of the way of wet suit sleeves because it wears through them if the crown is on the right side and you're wearing it on your left wrist

Not for me. I'm a Seiko enthusiast so the fact that the beze on this Citizen lines up perfectly with the chapter ring markers is unacceptable. The other thing that puts me off is the pressed clasp on a watch that costs 400 dollars - Seiko offer the same on their 1000 - dollar watches - why settle for a pressed clasp on a cheap watch when you can get it for a thousand dollars from Seiko ?

Great watches, stick it on a grey nato and forget about it. The rotor-wobble will make you giggle and you'll love how damn cool it is. It looks a bit 90s so has done it's ageing and will take everything you can throw at it! One of those watches that'll get cooler the more scratches it picks up.

Most Seiko divers also have pressed indices instead of applied indices, with the lume simply layered on top. The lume is still great. The pressed and filled in indices of the SPB053 / 063 are particularly bright, but it that might be because they also appear to be using the same lume formula as the Marine Master models.
The diameter of the bezel insert has a strong influence on how big or small the watch appears overall. Similar to how “all dial” watches appear larger than the overall diameter would suggest. I hope reviewers will some day start to measure the outer diameter of the dials for standard watches, and bezel inserts for divers and chronographs. I think it would help give us a better idea of how big or small a watch will appear on wrist.
    Great review as always, btw!

Agree. I've seen reviews where they say applied markers on the new Samurai when I'm pretty sure they're stamped. The lume is still good and just the fact some people think they're applied shows they did a good job.
Also agree on dial size vs. case size. A pet peeve of mine is luxury watches that increase case size, but movement (and dial) size stay the same. It makes the bezel look to thick and the date look like it's creeping to the center.

bought the Pepsi for my dad a few years ago, no sapphire and no hand winding, for about 200 dollars.
The lume seems different though, it was blue lume with a green pip.

I picked my Fugu up because I thought it was the most compelling for the price. The military history, the great quality of the case finishing and the solid end links and the 60 click bezel is a joy to play with (I have the older version). Luckily I wear mine loose around the knuckle so the lack of micro adjust is not a big deal for me. Got mine for about 200 USD

Very nice, I really like to see Citizen get showcased more as I think its a brand that get so easily overlooked compared to orient and seiko. Yeah $400 is a bit steep but I'm sure if you forego the 5 year warranty you could probably knock some off that. Do you happen to know if they make something similar but a bit smaller? Thanks.

Citizen make an "ecodrive" diver in blue and black options which is very similar, same case, similar dial and hands design, which is smaller at 43mm with 48mm lug to lug measurement - it wears significantly smaller on wrist and is very accurate and reliable.

The Fugu’s are great, though I’d pay an extra $50-$100 for an ungraded Miyota movement. Bracelet leaves some things to be desired. I’m confused by the width measurement you provided. My NY0091-83E measures just about 42mm.

  • @mediastarguest

I purchased this from an A.D. in the UK at a discounted sale price of £279, reduced from £399. Mine has a slighly different dial - it is the blue "crusted" effect which I guess is supposed to depict ocean waves.
Tbh, I was surprised to see it in the store at all - I was under the impression this limited edition was only available in Asia.
It's my second Citizen, I've had a 200m Promaster diver for six years, very versatile.
This Fugu is very chunky, masculine and purposeful-looking and has a great deal of prescence, possibly too much presence; you need at least a 7-inch wrist for this "beast."
Having said that, our dear Scotsman is absolutely right about the clasp - which is the Fugu's only downside; "no diver extension, cheap and hardly any micro adjustment."
    A 100% accurate review.

I just chickened out on a FUGU….weeks and weeks I saved and viewed various models. I just could not justify the additional cash for a Promaster LH watch. And ship dates were all over the place! Not to mention that clasp! I ended up buying a LH Pepsi Promaster…non-FUGU.
We do have a home in Asia that we go to yearly…when not in lockdown or restricted travels. Maybe our next trip home, I can find one I like. Fugu or not…I have an older Citizen diver that is 12 years old, and looks brand new. This will be my second Citizen. I’m looking forward to it arriving.

Citizen comes so close in so many cases, they could achieve so much more with so little more effort, look at the BN0201-88L, titanium, divers, milled security clasp and sadly mineral crystal…
Or the BN0211-09X, monoblock case, sapphire, duratect coated, second hand doesn’t hit the indices…
Atleast the eco drives run like a good trained horse!

    • @herewegoagain...
      @herewegoagain... 3 роки тому +4

I actually had that exact watch. It was a lovely watch, but yes, the mineral crystal was an odd choice. It was a flat crystal, so no complexity there, and even at a price of $300, I would have paid the extra $50 for sapphire. I will say one more thing on Citizen: they are obsessed with large watches. EVERY diver they have is at least 43-44mm, which is too big for me, and ultimately why I sold it. I understand that a of people like bigger watches, especially divers, but Citizen's lack of even one single diver around 41-42mm is odd.

I 'm so happy to see more Citizen models being brought on youtube, other than the classic promaster. Even among the ecodrivers i can't really name an icon reference. Their all cute, all nice, all eco ... but none of them ever really blew my mind. You grab one just to add an eco drive to the collection. Said so I'd never pick a fugu over a turtle. Sorry Citizen but good work, keep it up!

I could get behind this at maybe $350AUD, I'd probably stretch to $400 at most. But I'd be swapping out that clasp first chance I got!
I actually quite like the markers, especially that blocky 12 o'clock marker--kinda interesting. And those cute little tips to the 12,6,9 are nice and vaguely Turtle-esque.
But I think the clincher for me is perhaps the ugliest set of hands I've seen in some time? Yep, not for me I don't think.

Thank you Jody for a GREAT review. As always you give us the good, the bad and the ugly. I can always count on a factual and honest review regardless of which way the dial is going to turn, whether it's good or bad, you give it to us straight and that's why you're over 200k subscribers. Have to admit I do not have a citizen watch yet in my collection. One of these days either you, TGV or MWC will review one that I will just have to have and that will be it. Trying to finalize which watch I'm going to want for Christmas this year but we'll see. Right now I'm leaning towards a Seiko dive watch but we'll see. Love Seiko (thanks to TGV) and I don't have one of their dive watches in my collection. Have five Seiko watches, just not a diver. Thank you for ALL you do for our watch community!

Might be a hot take, but as someone who rushed to buy the NY0080-12x cause it reminded him of the NY0040 that I wanted so badly as a kid, I feel a bit shafted when they re-released updated models almost every year, when the first run of the Fugu series was supposed to be "Limited Edition". Really would have loved the same dimension with a Miyota 9000 series movement for an updated releases.
Side note, the hour hand on my NY0080, has a slight smudge (like a dark spot, probably not enough layer of lume paint), and Citizen said it did not fall under warranty and I couldn't get it changed.

I'm quite sure you can get a better calibre for a fraction of the price of this if you start looking at Orient, San Martin and Heimdallr etc. Saying that I own 5 Eco drives 1 being a promaster CA0710-82L and they are all in my permanent desk diver rotation 🙂

Great video Jody… this first watch that you review in a long long time that I actually find myself wanting to buy…
My wife even thought that I was over watches already… And so did I…
    Not anymore!!
    Ok last minute edit:
I just get to the price point… nope!

That clasp Jody, shocking. At that price Citizen can fugu right off!

Hey, what do you think of the Citizen BN0220 oder the BN0228?

Can it be ISO certified without a dive extension on the bracelet? I personally could care less about the extension, but I'm curious...

I have the eco-drive model Jody & I tend to agree this one isn’t up to previous iterations. Nonetheless I love Citizen watches!👍🏼😎

By far the best version of the Promaster is the titanium NY0100-50XE. Same 42mm case size as the original, solid link bracelet with fully milled clasp with 3 micro adjusts, gorgeous green dial and a nicer handset. I might be being biased though as I own it. 🤣

I picked the one with gold bezel, sunburst blue dial and blue rubber strap.. Looks awesome..
Nice review, Jody.. Greetings from Indonesia..☺️☺️

Other than the sapphire crystal and slightly better bracelet I struggle to see why you would pick one of these over an ny0040 variant. They have now been upgraded to the same movement and are much more wearable with a 42mm case.

I would consider the older limited edition FUGU NY0091-83E. You get a fair amount of Tudor Black Bay and a bit of funky Tudor P01 70150 feel with it. :)

The Miyota 9015 (although not in this watch) & Bezels-That-Line-Up...So close to leapfrogging Seiko for our affections, and then this PMD with the Shitinova Lume and the Shinola Clasp. An opportunity missed.

I’ve had the standard PMD & the Fugu, i sold the Fugu due to the crap lume & i avoid the bracelets for the reasons you mention. I niw have the full lume dial version of the standard PMD which is nice but they left the hands lumed as well so at night all you see is a green disk with black dots, lol, although i do love the watch!

Jody I have the full lume dial limited edition version from a few years back ny0080-12x, it came on a rubber dive strap and the lume is great. I’ll take a Citizen over a Seiko any day.

what's interesting to me, @@JustOneMoreWatch , is that the higher end vintage seiko bracelets often has zero adjustments on the clasp, like on the late seventies king quartz that i am wearing. i guess they figure if you are spending that much on a watch, you'll have someone at the ready to manipulate bracelet links to get it right. it seems silly to me still.
on another note on this king seiko, it was a fortune new, far more than a rolex or omega, yet today is worth just a little over a hundred dollars. can you imagine in 1978 you are at the jeweler trying to decide between the king quartz and a submariner and you got the seiko because you wanted for
      once to "go higher end"?

Having the stem on the other side is kind of weird. I can see that digging into my arm. And that clasp looks in par with an Ali cheapo. Great review as always!

I wonder if this model has the same problem with bezel vertical play. Click-click when you press opposite sides of the bezel. Drove me crazy...
