I don't think a congregation could pull this off, but a choir could. And they should. In a church. This is a hymn to peace. I liked it in 1988 and I like it still in 2023.
This song reminds me of being 15 and thinking I knew it all. The fights with my Dad. Too bad he is not alive for me to tell him now i understand his point of view. I have a daughter now and realize all the worries I gave him. I have the daughter I was. God Bless you Dad. I hope I can give to my daughter, all that you gave to me.
You have me in tears sweetheart. I have a son now so at 15 I thought I knew it all and what I did too my Dad is sad. I get it now too. He is alive so I make it up too him all the time.
I saw this band around 1988-89; they played on a small stage in the basement of a restaurant & bar in my hometown (Fayetteville, Arkansas) on a Sunday evening, I think. I had heard the song "Common Ground" played on a local radio station & wanted to see the band. I was one of only a few people that were in the audience, as l remember, & the atmosphere was laid back & informal. They played a great performance (including this song). I talked to the band members for while, & they were nice people. The band travelled on a tour bus, & when the bus arrived, it pulled up near the restaurant right next to where I was standing, so I was the first person the band members met when they got off the bus! I bought a "Rhythm Corps" tour t-shirt at the concert, which I had for years.
Went to high school with 2 of the guys! Always had a crush on Richie Lovsin, the drummer since 9th grade, he was a senior. LOVE this song!! Very appropriate for the times we are going through!!! So happy people are still listening!!! Peace. We should try to get them to play this on the radio again!!!!
Yes, they are from Michigan…although I can’t remember where. I’m in the Detroit are as well. I discovered them through “Broken Halo” in ‘82 *Swooon*. “Night & Day” is another fantastic tune….
I had forgotten about this song. So glad it popped up on my UA-cam. They had a great sound. It’s a shame they couldn’t duplicate the success of this song.
This was from one of the Top 10 albums of the 80s IMHO. Terrific songwriting & energy from start to finish, plus Michael Persh's outstanding vocals. I still play this album to this day (on vinyl, no less!).
Agreed. I was in Detroit at the same time. Incredible talent in that town at the time. Bands that were close and bands that kinda made it. The Rockets, Bitter sweet alley, Seduce, The Romantics...Hard to beat Michigan music.
Does anyone remember the band Second Self? They had a single that was kind of big, "Lose those Shadows"? "Common Ground" and "Lose Those Shadows" are inextricably tied in my memory thanks to 88.7.

So cool they're playing in Detroit this October! Didn't know they got back together! This song takes me back to the fall of my freshman year at Michigan State. Such good memories.

Wow, glad I found this song. I saw these guys warm up for Pat Benatar back in 1988. My wife and I were trying to remember who these guys were, and all I could remember was I liked this song and the lead singer wore a beret - I couldn't remember the name of the song or the band! I just happened to see the phrase "common ground" on a random website and it all instantly came back to me!
I just discovered that wonderful and beautiful song… don’t understand why I didn’t hear that band and their talents before?!?! I sure enjoy it right now ❤
These guys.....The Rockets....The Romantics.....The Look....Bittersweet Alley.....Toby Redd.....Mugsy.....and of course Bob Seger and Ted Nugent....the Pinnacle of the Detroit music scene!! I grew up on the West side near Joy Rd and Evergreen.....not too far from Rouge Park. Left the D in the Fall of 1986 and spent 33 years in So Cal....got insanely expensive....in Beautiful South Carolina now.
I always liked this song a lot for many years now. Once I was traveling south from the northwest and coming into California after a while saw a sign for a coffee shop called Common Grounds and just had to exit a go to it, totally expected that song to be playing when I arrived, though sadly it wasn’t , but it was in my head.
I remember watching this on MTV. Great song. I keep playing this video for ONE reason only.....lead singer is so nice looking! Beautiful features! Eyes, lips, ect..... . Nice voice, too. 🤗
I decade this song to OUR COUNTRY AND THE WORLD. GOD ALMIGHTY KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON AND AND NOTHING HAPPENS WITH OUT HIS HOLY WILL.IN THE SON OF MANS NAME JESUS CHRIST, FOREVERMORE.
I agree with you tapaccountsonly. I had the cassette in the 80's. I recently bought the cd off the internet. I realy like Father's Footsteps. Common Ground reminds me of being a teenager and having issues with not being able to relate to my father.
Saw this band in Rolla, MO. in 1991(?). I was the first guy to reach my hand up from the crowd. The singer practically ripped my arm off! Got the crowd going though.
Virus homebound gave me a chance to stroll down memory lane of music videos. I was 20yld and loved this whole album. I didn't know they were from Detroit - makes sense for a "working man's band"
Every time this song came on----circa mid to late 80's, turn this one up. one hit wonder band but a killer song, this one made my cassette recorded rotation during that time.
Actually they had a few hits and raido sucess. One of their songs "Broken Halos" was used in the movie 'Valley girl'. They also had regular air play in Detroit with the songs 'Sattelies' and "Faith and Muscle"...
I saw this band when they opened for Pat Benatar in the late 80s and bought the album. I’ve been listening to it more lately. It is definitely a much needed message for today.
In the late 80’s I was a broadcaster on an alternative music station in Port Huron. I was not at all familiar with that music. I found this album and this song!!! I was the least alternative DJ but I found some great music! Love RC🎶
I too am a major market broadcasters in Houston, TX. This song was unfortunately, never on the spectrum that it should have been....in the grand scheme of things, sadly, most of the population have never heard it!!!
Song reminds me of Gene Sistrunk and the love he had for his girl friend at that time. Can't remember her name....... she screwed him over big time....
When I arrived in Charlotte in August '88 to attend UNC Charlotte, the first time I turned on the radio, this song was playing. Dang, was that really 26 years ago????
Same story! arrived at MTSU in Murfreesboro TN in 1988 and this was playing on the radio, the world isn't so big after all! Hope life turned out as great for you as it has for me! :)
I was asked by Greg and Mike to join this band when they originally formed in 1980. St the time Greg had just left a band called the Plugs. Michael i did not know I was already leaving for LA for opportunities there. Looking back i probably should have changed my mind. However years later my band The Shy did some shows with them. Great memories! Common Ground is a "Anthem" type of song. Timeless and very good!
You guys made songs and melodies as great as the most popular bands back then… I don’t think you had a good promoter like you deserved you guys…sorry about that but you’re one of the best ❤
I don't think a congregation could pull this off, but a choir could. And they should. In a church. This is a hymn to peace. I liked it in 1988 and I like it still in 2023.

An incredibly great, perfect song. Pure Magic
Perfect song for these derisive and divided times...

Justice of the peas!
When this came out in 1988, I used to walk the hallways at work singing to myself "not that stuuuuupid". Good times.
BGElks he was asked by Jason Patrick, the drummer ...lol
A good song to play during these divisive trouble times in America today.
Except for the unfortunate fact that the answer is clearly no, we can't. We don't even have a common reality anymore, much less ground.
