My grandmother taught me if I had an insect on my plants that I could take them out of their pots remove all the soil. Wash them with dish soap then rinser them. Wash and scrub their pots really well. Then repot them. I started doing this when I couldn't afford insecticides. And it really works.
Sharon Howle, that's an old time remedy back where I grew up in VA, too! There's another lady on UA-cam who does that to nearly every new plant that she takes home. I hadn't thought of it in many years until she and now you mentioned doing it! Thanks for the memory & tip! 🌾💜
It's been my experience that ferns like epsom salt. I use about a tablespoon per gallon of water when watering mine. The magnesium really helps them to stay green. This also works on hostas.

Hi Laura! Keep in mind that some of these houseplant ferns do great outside as well depending on where you live. I happen to live near the California/Oregon border on the coast where it constantly rains and my ferns were doing terrible inside. I put my rabbits foot, mother fern, and birds nest fern outside and they are doing amazing!
I have had success using a hydro spike for my boston fern.😊 I also mist the plant daily. I didn't know there was a "Chrissy Fern" though! My family call me Chrissy and I definitely want one now!😁💚 I enjoy these videos...great content, and Benjamin is a joy to see!😊
Hi, Laura. I keep a pot with an asparagus fern, a small maidenhair fern and a bird's nest fern. I potted them in a terra cotta pot, then placed that in a larger plastic pot (ceramic would have been too heavy as I have it hanging). I filled the space between the pots with preserved moss, and put 2 ceramic plant watering spikes in the space between the pots, and one in the middle. The 3 capillary tubes go into a nearby 1-quart Mason jar which I fill about every 2 weeks. The moss stays moist all the time, as does the soil, but never wet. I never water the pot, and they have grown beautifully through the hot summer and cooler fall and winter. I use the same watering stakes in my big Boston fern, also hanging. I created a wire cage for the Mason jar and attached it to the bottom of the macrame hanger. The fern currently has 9 fronds growing, and it's mid-February! Thanks for tip about grooming - I've been pulling off the occasional brown leaves but the partially bare branches aren't so attractive. Hope to see you at the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival on Wednesday.
i was at our local nursery/seeds company at the beginning of April 2019 - not long after watching this video and a couple other fern related video by Garden Answer - and they happened to have some selections of fern... so i bought 3 babies in different varieties (maidenhair, asparagus, and staghorn, i think) and tested them out in - for the lack of better description - a fidget spinner shaped container that houses all three plantlets together. It's a pretty cool looking pot with all the different shades, shapes and textures of the leaves! :) - The ferns live on my desk in the office with lots indirect sunlight (large west facing windows and lots white surfaces the light could bounce off. - I putted a layer of pea gravel in the outer decorative pot and kept them wet like Laura did here - only required to top off the water every other day (for this particular set up and environment). - Also watered them between 5-6 day intervals (it has only just been three weeks since i got them), again like Laura said here, whenever they feels kinda "less wet" or individual pots became lighter in weight. - I didn't mist them for the two weeks cuz I couldn't find a good sprayer that's not plastic thru and thru - selfish, i know. The day i gave up looking in local stores and brought one on Amazon, i walked into a random hardware store and found them standing on the shelf at half the price i paid for online... wait, i had a point... So the first two weeks without misting they seems to be doing just fine. The moisture coming from the bottom definitely helped, but I've been misting them this week, about once or twice a day, and they look happy too. - Because almost everyone at our office has gotten a few plants on our desks, from snake plants, ribbon plants, Chinese money plants, purple (or maroon) shamrock, jade plants, pathos, to zz plants, just to name a few i could recognize and call out their names, there are definitely fungus gnats in and around. For those of you who may not know what I'm talking about, it's a tiny little insects that likes to fly around take a deep dive at your coffee or soup... It's not a huge issue (yet) and we do have those yellow stickies here and there to catch them, so i haven't gotten to a point where i need to worry about repotting anything or getting some insecticides to hold the fort - can't say that about the plants at my house... I stopped by the nursery again today and my fern definitely putted on more growth than their siblings sitting under the store grow lights - given that the nursery has way more things to attend to and i have 3+5 (other existing plants on my desk), i must have done something right by following those rules, hence long post sharing it here. Long explanation, short (?) conclusion: *Laura and Aaron,* and any family members/friends that helps you to do what you do, thank you!! I really do appreciate what you guys do everyday and that affects my life on so many levels. I love my tenny tiny green oasis at work and my growing search for Eden at home. Hi Laura, update on my Maidenhair Fern: it's been doing great except for one week a few weeks ago where the weather was disgustingly humid, I completely forgot to open up and air out my indoor greenhouse and, so I found five mushrooms growing on the top of my Fern's soil lol !! I was able to get rid of them by changing the soil and it's doing great again!!💕🥰🙏🏼 Hi Laura came back because I'm repotting my Maidenhair Fern and wanted to do it right!! Unfortunately, my Rabbit's foot fern died but my Maidenhair is doing beautifully!! I keep mine in an indoor, plastic covered greenhouse and I mist it once a day!! I water it every 5 days!! And I open the flap every day for about an hour or two, and use a fan to air out the greenhouses to avoid fungus gnats!! I absolutely LOVE all ferns!!❤️❤️❤️

I grow lots of ferns where I live in Australia, many of the ferns seen in this video are native to areas close by me. Ferns are very misunderstood as house plants, they honestly can take quite a lot of direct sun (2-3 hours) as long as they aren’t ever allowed to dry out. You really want to give them as much bright light as possible, and keep big saucers under them filled with water (it’s pretty hard to get fern roots to rot). Birds nests are definitely the most hardy variety, and I wonder what Laura plans to do with hers once they reach the 2+ meter width of maturity like the ones in my garden. I’d love to see a video on some American ferns in your garden, although I haven’t spotted any in past videos. Many of the deciduous ferns native to the us and Europe don’t grow as well in Australia, so I’d love to learn more about them.
I would have loved to have had you mention care and repotting of the staghorn fern that I noticed sitting in the foreground. Love watching your videos.

I had a beautiful Boston fern that was out all summer. During the winter indoors it turned brown, crisp, and ended up dropping all of its leaves. I think I see what I did wrong now. Not enough light, water, or humidity. Thank you! Love seeing Benjamin in the videos!

Thank you for another great video! I’m from Queensland Australia, in an area with very high humidity. I have found with my birds nest fern that I have to wait for it to dry out more than any of my other tropical plants before I water it. I wait for the plant to go a grey-green colour between watering, and then it’s back to bright green a few hours after watering. The reason I let it dry out that far between watering is that I was experiencing rot in the crown of the plant and it wasn’t putting on any new growth. When it was dryer, it puts on new growth like crazy. I love your channel, thank you for doing what you do 😁
The pebble idea is brilliant. I have a kangaroo fern that just loves water and damp, between the pebbles and misting I think it might start to be happy again.

Also, my climate isn’t dry but in the winter it gets dry in the house from using the heater. I found really cool tiny humidifiers that you put a bottle of Poland Springs in it and it turns it into a humidifier that I keep around my plants.
I’m not big on houseplants only because I tend to kill them. But I love all of your videos especially the daily routine ones. But most of all I love seeing that sweet Benjamin face. He’s absolutely adorable. Thanks for sharing. ❤️

Thank you, l just bought a Boston Fern for the first time a few weeks ago. Very helpful video. l live in Scotland and l only give it couple hours a day near a window and return it back to a shady corner in the hallway that doesn't get much natural sunlight. Some leaves have started to brown, l think that was because l left it close to a window during the day in the first week. Will see how 2 hours a day natural sunlight near a window makes a difference. The pot soil is damp.

I have a blue star fern and I just give it maybe a 30 second shower every day or so! I end up hardly ever actually watering because it replicates that rainforest climate, like he’s getting rained on everyday ☺️
my tiny little mahogany fern is really dry and kind of dying so I'm gonna try to do all of your tips to bring it back to life! As far as I've noticed humidity is a big deal (though living in rainy London you'd think it won't be an issue) so I'll definitely go out and fetch a mister like yours!
Thanks for this video, I only wish I had more room for plants in my small single-wide. I have 3 plants, one is a Christmas Cactus, one a pony tail palm (tiny) and the other is a Peace Lily. Years past I had upwards to 30 different house plants and I love them. Love of plants grew into a full blown nursery. Can't wait to get outside and play! Loved seeing Benjamin at the end!

I also love rabbits foot fern and need to get a new one for the classroom as the children love this plant. You always offer such great information and I am always happy to hear you say things like, " this may not work for you or in your area." I have a problem with people who say to absolutely plant a certain way or only do this and your plant will look great. You give general advice and note what has worked for you and others you know and encourage us to try things for ourselves and I thank you for that! Love seeing Benjamin as well!!!!
Carol Beatty I used to be a preschool teacher and my kids loved learning about carnivorous plants. They are pretty easy to come by either in garden stores or online. Great learning opportunity! Look up pitcher plants and Venus fly traps.

Love ferns indoor and outdoor hardy ferns. I do mostly shade gardening. my favorite indoor variety is the rabbits foot fern. It is about 10 years old. Would love to share a picture but I don't know how to on UA-cam.
Neat! I just bought a little rabbit's foot 4 days ago! I love it because right now it looks like a tarantula. Can you give me any advice on how to care for it? Tess of the Bells. I give mine a sip of water twice a week. It Sits near a north facing window. Receives bright light but no sun and I only fertilize it twice a year with epsoma liquid plant food that is for indoor plants

I had two Boston ferns a few years ago on the south side on our back steps they got sun in late after noon direct I wet then down alote with the hose they were from Wal-Mart in hanging baskets I took then out and repoted them in garden planters they were gorgeous and then in the fall the got a slight frost and turned bronze not dead. I really enjoyed them till winter s cold with the pumpkins beside them wish I could send you the picture I took

I had a beautiful Boston fern that was out all summer. During the winter indoors it turned brown, crisp, and ended up dropping all of its leaves. I think I see what I did wrong now. Not enough light, water, or humidity. Thank you! Love seeing Benjamin in the videos!

Morning Sweet Laura. I entered I over an asperaqus Fern since I have my hummidifer going all the time. it grew an is quite beautiful. I only watered it same as my other house plants, love it.
Thank you for another great video! I’m from Queensland Australia, in an area with very high humidity. I have found with my birds nest fern that I have to wait for it to dry out more than any of my other tropical plants before I water it. I wait for the plant to go a grey-green colour between watering, and then it’s back to bright green a few hours after watering. The reason I let it dry out that far between watering is that I was experiencing rot in the crown of the plant and it wasn’t putting on any new growth. When it was dryer, it puts on new growth like crazy.

The pebble idea is brilliant. I have a kangaroo fern that just loves water and damp, between the pebbles and misting I think it might start to be happy again.

Also, my climate isn’t dry but in the winter it gets dry in the house from using the heater. I found really cool tiny humidifiers that you put a bottle of Poland Springs in it and it turns it into a humidifier that I keep around my plants.
You can get really cute humidifiers if you look in the baby section. I have an owl one

Thank you, l just bought a Boston Fern for the first time a few weeks ago. Very helpful video. l live in Scotland and l only give it couple hours a day near a window and return it back to a shady corner in the hallway that doesn't get much natural sunlight.
Some leaves have started to brown, l think that was because l left it close to a window during the day in the first week. Will see how 2 hours a day natural sunlight near a window makes a difference. The pot soil is damp.
I bought a fern plant its so easy to care for. I move it around the house to spice up the extra small 🙂 space I have. Love your videos 💚

I have a blue star fern and I just give it maybe a 30 second shower every day or so! I end up hardly ever actually watering because it replicates that rainforest climate, like he’s getting rained on everyday ☺️
my tiny little mahogany fern is really dry and kind of dying so I'm gonna try to do all of your tips to bring it back to life! As far as I've noticed humidity is a big deal (though living in rainy London you'd think it won't be an issue) so I'll definitely go out and fetch a mister like yours!

Thanks for this video, I only wish I had more room for plants in my small single-wide. I have 3 plants, one is a Christmas Cactus, one a pony tail palm (tiny) and the other is a Peace Lily. Years past I had upwards to 30 different house plants and I love them. Love of plants grew into a full blown nursery. Can't wait to get outside and play! Loved seeing Benjamin at the end!

Great coffee with Laura video! I really enjoyed this video and love ferns especially the maiden hair and asparagus fern. I also love rabbits foot fern and need to get a new one for the classroom as the children love this plant. You always offer such great information and I am always happy to hear you say things like, " this may not work for you or in your area." I have a problem with people who say to absolutely plant a certain way or only do this and your plant will look great. You give general advice and note what has worked for you and others you know and encourage us to try things for ourselves and I thank you for that! Love seeing Benjamin as well!!!!
Carol Beatty I used to be a preschool teacher and my kids loved learning about carnivorous plants. They are pretty easy to come by either in garden stores or online. Great learning opportunity! Look up pitcher plants and Venus fly traps.

Love ferns indoor and outdoor hardy ferns. I do mostly shade gardening. my favorite indoor variety is the rabbits foot fern. It is about 10 years old. Would love to share a picture but I don't know how to on UA-cam.

Tess of the Bells. I give mine a sip of water twice a week. It Sits near a north facing window. Receives bright light but no sun and I only fertilize it twice a year with epsoma liquid plant food that is for indoor plants

I had two Boston ferns a few years ago on the south side on our back steps they got sun in late after noon direct I wet then down alote with the hose they were from Wal-Mart in hanging baskets I took then out and repoted them in garden planters they were gorgeous and then in the fall the got a slight frost and turned bronze not dead. I really enjoyed them till winter s cold with the pumpkins beside them wish I could send you the picture I took
