I don't have a ton of experience with moisture meters but I'm planning on ordering several different types and doing a full video on them along with the examples like i did with the rags in the bowls. I do remember using one from lowes and thinking the readings were a little subjective and I can see it would be misleading or confusing for people. Thank you for the compliments and the suggestion!
The misting clip made me regret leaving the church and denying the existence of anything beautiful and real in this world. This video saved my soul, people.
I bought a maiden hair fern about a month ago from Lowes and repotted it right away and Its doing good so far! This is my first fern and I really didn't want to kill it so I water it about every 2 days and mist it in between! Picky girl!
Give a maiden hair fern a constantly moist area spores start easily....my spores grew on the pumace stone waterfall in a table bowl type foutain..so I left it there fountain still works fine. Terrarium type location great for these ferns. Thanks Jeff. You really can't let this one dry out or stay too soggy.
These plants grow naturally in my back yard with soil that’s basically just a chunk of clay! I’ve always wanted to take one indoors because they’re so beautiful but I’m afraid of killing it.
Nice! Good stuff! I teach people at my garden center about these ferns all the time. I've almost killed a few maidenhairs, but they do come back. :D I really like that cloche idea. Thanks
cloche nearly indispensable for those who grow - the true glass ones are soooo pricey. i have found several substitutes...old glass lamp shades -eg: hurricane lamp or old sconce type - for smaller plants, for larger , eg seedlings or starts as they grow outside in the garden, gallon water jugs top cut away, or, leave the top, with handle & pouring opening but cut cut around bottom edge evenly so it sits flush on earth... they can protect from pests, frost, drying out....i also use a large clear plastic tub that licorice comes in, twizzlers or some such. around 10 in diameter opening, straight walls, perfectly round, sturdy ..... @ 10- 12 in. deep. reduce & re-use, people.
I love maiden hair ferns! Ive got a lot of them. they grow from bulbs. Thats why if foliage die and you cutt it back they regrow. You can also pull them apart and get new plants.
I just bought 2 Mist Maidenhair ferns, and they're almost 4X delicate-looking than these; I had to get them! It's going to be a challenge, but I'm up for it! I had to watch this again; it's a great video!
I’ve watched so many of these videos saying that they are so fussy, but mine has been completely fine and I’ve messed up a LOT. Mine is a fritz Luther and it has been doing so good even though I’m a complete failure of a plant beginner.
Most people who can't grow things are too attentive, water too much. But the ironic thing about maiden hair is that I have found them in the wild growing in the rocks under waterfalls, constantly water logged. Wonder how come our overwatering hurts? I mean right under the falling water! And it's obvious they CHOSE to be there, they weren't planted there. Just sayin... I have one in my fairy garden (carved wooden fairy home under it so it looks like a giant tree!) On my patio which is covered so it doesn't get any direct sun, just bright light. I mist and constantly check it for moisture. I have Scotch moss all around it and a large flat rock the house sits on. It seems to be very happy, but we'll see.
I love five finger maiden hair ferns. A clump I have moved from house to house has been in my life for at least 60 years. It looked "not so great" this year. I was wondering can I divide some off and bring it indoors?
Hi 🙋♀️ There Jeff ! 👋👋! 🥺🥺🤷♀️ I loved your video! Fun, cute, informative! I never knew that there were so many Maiden Hair verities? Now my top 10 favorite plant’s. I’m confident my new girls are going to thrive! 👏🏼👏🏼. Going to watch another one of your videos! Thanks again for sharing all that you know the way that you are! 🤗
I'm a Maidenhair killer from way back. The only time they grew well was when I planted them in a copse of trees when I was still living in Ohio. So, not being able to find that jade plant here, I ordered the tricolor and Hummel's Sunset from Mountain Crest gardens. They should arrive next week sometimes, we'll see what I get (i.e. were they worth $3.95).
Most of us are maidenhair fern killers, that's why these ferns are going in terrariums. Most luck i've had with them outside was when I had a pond with a waterfall that splattered little bits of water here and there around them, but still despite being hardy varieties they never returned after a bad winter. That's exciting about your hummels sunset! It does look pretty on their website. Hopefully that holds true in real life! I always check for more tricolor jades for ya when i'm out. Every time i find them they are shriveled and sad looking.
💚 Ferns or so pretty, I have heard about the tip to put them in the bathroom because they like the moisture from the shower! The one that is mentionedd, a Maidenhair Fern is a new name to me, would like to learn more about it. I think it is good for your own hair growth too for ferns to be in the bathroom.
I haven't seen this question yet in the comments but I have a fairly new to me maidenhair fern and it's soil is damp not soaking not dry, however the leaves are browning and crisping. I live in a fairly dry area so I have been misting them twice a day. Your video gave some insight into a potential problem because I had a layer of steel wool on top of the soil to get rid of fungus gnats that were there when I purchased it and I noticed the leaves down close to that center are struggling so I took it off hopefully some air flow will help. I may also try to buy a humidifier for this guy, any other suggestions you have would be appreciated but your video already helped a ton so thank you!
Hello! I don't know how big it is, but sometimes it is extremely helpful to put a glass cloche over them. I've seen someone on Instagram put a floral bowl/goldfish bowl upside down and over the plant which is genius for holding in humidity, and looked kind of cute too. Otherwise a humidifier might be the way to go if you live in a dry climate.
The tip about soil moisture was very helpful! I have a question regarding the pebble tray. Would it still be beneficial if I rested the pot on a small saucer placed on top of the rocks? Ex: My plant pot and small saucer is 6in wide, and the pebble tray is 12in wide. I see alot of people saying to place to the plant directly on the rocks, however I felt that with this method you could still benefit from the evaporation of the water and keep the soil from dirtying the pebbles and rocks making for easier cleaning.
Tky for great information! What type of fertilizer is best? I got my piece of rabbit foot from a neighbor and feet are still brown with hint of white. Should I trim them back and use to start cuttings? I am in southeast of Alabama
I'm really struggling with my maiden hair fern..lost all the leaves by touching.. Tiny leaves are growing hoping to not touch them and see what happens too new growth.. Great info😅
SCALE! I have lots of scale on one of my maidenhair ferns that I just can't get rid of. Can I use a systemic insecticide on my maidenhair ferns? Any other recommendations on how to deal with scale? Thanks!
Hey Matt! Oh no, not scale on a maidenhair fern! I don't know how the fern would react to a systemic. If it were mine I would probably start with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and would go through and dab it on every little scale bug that I see. Problem is, just about anything you put on the fronds of a maidenhair fern could burn them. Ok, maybe neem or insecticidal soap would be better to start with. Sorry... thinking as I'm typing. You know what though, it would probably be fine to just cut all the foliage off and start the plant over too. They rebound rather quickly from pruning given they are under ideal growing conditions.
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks so much for your replay! I cut it all off last summer and it has all grown back and more. I actually sprayed the entire thing down with alcohol a few times. I have some neem oil spray I think I'm going to try next. It's a rosy maidenhair fern and grows back fast. It's hard to tell if they are all dead as they don't move. It would be great if a systemic would work. I'll have to look into that more. Maybe I'll divide it and try a systemic on a division...use it as an experimental plant.
I brought two maidenhair (EDIT: they may have been Marisa...) fern plant babies early April from our local nursery. One went home with me and one I left on the office desk. I did the constant moist soil (check and pretty much watered a bit every two days so far April to May) on top of the soil dish like shown in the video here. Only difference is lighting. The one in my home is placed near west facing window - not a lot light comes in; the one in the office is placed near and open desk area with full glazing west facing wall - LOTS of natural indirect sunlight comes in throughout the day. And the one with access to tons of light in the office is grown 1.5 the size in the past month than the one in my place… (PS, as a responsible plant parent, I moved the house one to the office as well…)
I'd like to have opinions about the idea of mulching the pot top with leaves that contain sori. Why do I do this?: In the hope that it can help the cluster propagate. (for the skeptical: This is the way it's supposed to happen in The Wild…) Is it safe fungi-wise?
That's a great idea! I don't know it would be a problem. A lot of people will add small handfuls of native soil to potting mixes to introduce micorrhiza fungi. Kind of a similar approach?
Hi all. I live in Brisbane QLD Australia. My ‘Silver Hair’s Foot Fern’ (Humana tyermanii) lives in full morning sun from about 5-6 am to 9am. It is 70 cm across and still has nice fresh green leaves but I notice it has about 1-5% orange, yelllow leaves. The external roots are crazy. I don’t know how to repot or seperate it. I cant see any soil in the pot, but I cant SEE into the pot because the roots are so overcrowded. My question is do I repot? Do I leave it? Do I move it from the full morning sun(it has lived in this spot for going on 2 years)? I love the look of the plant and don’t want to lose it. Thanks Marcia
Hello! If you're having trouble keeping it watered then it's probably time to repot. I'd give it a good soak, place it in a bucket with water covering the entire pot for a few minutes to help loosen the roots. Then pull it gently from it's container and if the roots are heavily wrapped around themselves on the sides and/or bottom then gently loosen them and plant it up into a larger pot. Would be a good idea to keep it somewhere with a little less light for a few weeks while it adjust to the pot.
I killed my first one as a teen....and I loved them so....learning curve....now I'm old and have a big one...but I set up a fountain....the kind with a grey oval resin bowl base and a waterfall type insert made out of lava type material....I added stones and more lava chunks and after a few years. O.M.G.....every hole in the lava stone that was kept damp...must of caught spore from the maiden hair fern..in the same room.....so my fountain eventually turned out magical maidenhair covered magical fountain... it became covered with ferns....I kept it for a few years that way they grew about a foot tall....but finally it got old fronds too thick...and I tore it apart....but to start more if you have an old one with spores put a saucer with water and a lava stone under the parent plant....or damp soil....for a week or so you....keep damp or put in a terrarium and cover and wait...more or less set and forget....
On a windowsill in my bathroom and the new leaves are dry and brittle. Should I take away from the window? Too much air taking away the humidity? And I've got small stones on the surface of the soil, could that be a problem?
Not a bad idea! Definitely worth giving a try. If the plants don't respond well to it, can always just pull the spikes. The moisture loving nature for them is also partially humidity related so not having the soil damp could be a problem in that regard. But it the air is nice and moist, I think the spikes would help and not hurt anything.
Suzanne here, i can tell ya, they do not like to be touched, and i see vidoes where people do it and it drives me bonkers, to see them do it, please, dont touch haha
I tried to transplant a few maiden hair ferns from my neighbor's garden to mine and have not been successful. Although I chose shady areas, they turned yellow then brown even though I was watering them daily. Could it be the difference in soil? moisture? Other fern transplants have been very successful but this is a tough one.
Thank you for reminding me! I grabbed a self-watering kit a few weeks ago and i think that this fern would be perfect to try that out on! Some self-watering pots using wicking, which should work ok for the maidenhairs, others just have a reservoir under the soil that basically is just a puddle of water, which likely wouldn't be great for them.
I treated my two maiden hairs with all of my other plants for spider mites, with a treatment of Dr.Woods tea tree oil & peppermint Castile soaps, 1% hydrogen peroxide, alcohol & water. My other plants are doing well but my maiden hairs don’t seem at all happy with me…In my defense, I was trying to keep them from getting the mites but I’m afraid i have hurt them!! Any advice??
This maiden hair fern ....when adult with spores....will start babies in every damp pot......I have several....yes I have acidently let one go bone dry.....sometimes if you cut off dead fronds and stillvwater it will come back.
at 9:08 the text bubble should have read, "PESTS" not "PETS" .... woops!
I did laugh at that, but that just makes you even more real and interesting to watch and listen to. Have you ever done a video along the lines of bloopers / funny moments / out takes?
I almost deleted the entire video from youtube and was going to fix that typo and one other then start all over again. Maidenhair ferns are a bit different than most ferns because they like slightly acidic soil. If anyone is having trouble keeping them alive, I would recommend adding a tiny bit of lime to your soil mixture (especially if you're using peat moss, as it's alkaline!)

I have killed quite a few, but I love these ferns! So I am now trying to keep two alive and found your video, great tips, and my experience has taught me too. Great demonstration of moist vs. soggy👏
thank you! I was going to just use soil, but i didn't want to make a mess so opted for rags instead.
I loved the wet clothes example, it was very helpful for visual learners 👍 Maybe some time you might go over moisture meters, what the various numbers mean with some examples and maybe another set cloth visual. What kind of soil and proportion is good for maiden hair fern. Thank you.
Thank you!
No problem, Mary!
Love them
My maidenhair is alive but the fronds don't stay up, they sort of lay flat. What can i do to get them to stand up on their own?
Hello sir, thank you for a educational video. Do you ever get insects like gnats since the plant is wet most of the time? I had that issue. Thank you.
And the one with access to tons of light in the office is grown 1.5 the size in the past month than the one in my place…
(PS, as a responsible plant parent, I moved the house one to the office as well…)
Amazing what a difference environment can make isn't it?
Tropical Plant Party Absolutely! Let there be light!
I LOVE these, soooo delicate and beautiful, I have these in the yard. Divalike hahahaha
They are amazing, very ethereal!
I'd like to have opinions about the idea of mulching the pot top with leaves that contain sori.
Why do I do this?: In the hope that it can help the cluster propagate. (for the skeptical: This is the way it's supposed to happen in The Wild…)
Is it safe fungi-wise?
That's a great idea! I don't know it would be a problem. A lot of people will add small handfuls of native soil to potting mixes to introduce micorrhiza fungi. Kind of a similar approach?
On this moment.. I struggle with this maidenhair fern.. Im just waithing for a new leaf.. it's almost dying.. hope that she gonna make it..
Can I use the indoor potting soil and add peat moss ? Is there a potting mixture you recommend ?
Interesting video
congratulations on 1k likes ;)
Thank you! This is an older video so I never would have known if you hadn't told me. 😊
@@TropicalPlantParty no problem :)
🖐 Killed one and praying I can save the second one!
Lol! They're such divas! Well worth it since they are so beautiful.
Would adding charcoal or hydrostone help with the sour water in the humidity bowl?
In Sydney Australia we se light to them. Like the aborigines do a they grow back beautifully liktheydo in the bush 😊
I just bought a beautiful plant. I put it in a wicking combo pot. Will this be too much water?
Should be ok! If it seems like it is staying too wet you can always change things up.
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks
On a windowsill in my bathroom and the new leaves are dry and brittle. Should I take away from the window? Too much air taking away the humidity? And I've got small stones on the surface of the soil, could that be a problem?
👋 I keeping buying maiden hair ferns hoping this plant will grow more than a couple months😥
Uno de mis helechos favoritos
Es uno de mis favoritos también!
i live in the caribbean... so its really difficult to kill a maiden hair fern
Lucky! I bet you have a beautiful garden!
same, i really love plants that like humidity
Has anyone tried using capillary action water spikes to keep these maidens watered? Thinking of trying it 🤔
Not a bad idea! Definitely worth giving a try. If the plants don't respond well to it, can always just pull the spikes. The moisture loving nature for them is also partially humidity related so not having the soil damp could be a problem in that regard. But it the air is nice and moist, I think the spikes would help and not hurt anything.
my maidenhair fern is still not talking to me since that one time two years ago i forgot to water they/them.
they/them won't even look at me.
I bought some sad, slightly dried ones from the supermarket, now I’m trying to save them...
Good luck! They usually bounce back well once they are given plenty of water and tlc
I buy all my plants on the clearance rack at lowes because they are dying, saves money
I’ve killed my maidenhair fern twice, and after I cut it down to the base it’s grown back. Hopefully third times a charm! 😅
Suzanne here, i can tell ya, they do not like to be touched, and i see vidoes where people do it and it drives me bonkers, to see them do it, please, dont touch haha
very helpful
👋👋👋 three hand for 3 ferns 😭 4th times the charm right? Haha
I bought a labeled "Silver Dollar" fern. Which Maidenhair is it? Is it a more hardy variety? It hates me I think. Lol
Hi Guys. Just wanna ask some question. Is it okay if I put my maidenhair fern in balcony area?
I tried to transplant a few maiden hair ferns from my neighbor's garden to mine and have not been successful. Although I chose shady areas, they turned yellow then brown even though I was watering them daily. Could it be the difference in soil? moisture? Other fern transplants have been very successful but this is a tough one.
Yes, I have killed a Maidenhair fern...must water and mist frequently!
Absolutely!
we have had our maiden hair die twice and come back even better than before
Thanks
Would a self watering plastic pot be able to maintain a balanced moisture level in the soil? Or would it bring up too much water?
Thank you for reminding me! I grabbed a self-watering kit a few weeks ago and i think that this fern would be perfect to try that out on! Some self-watering pots using wicking, which should work ok for the maidenhairs, others just have a reservoir under the soil that basically is just a puddle of water, which likely wouldn't be great for them.
This makes me want to make an indoor waterfall or something like that as a fren feature.
Thanks for sharing :)
Yep, I definitely killed one!!! Lol. Might get another one after watching this, great info thank you :) xx
Not yet!! 🤞🏼
I killed some big ferns I got from a friend's friend. Ferns belong on UA-cam videos done by experts.
lol! A lot of people, if not most people have lost a fern or two in their days. This particular one is kind of a pain though.
Just received mine in the mail my boyfriend dropped it wish me luck
Drop him!
This maiden hair fern ....when adult with spores....will start babies in every damp pot......I have several....yes I have acidently let one go bone dry.....sometimes if you cut off dead fronds and stillvwater it will come back.
Oh yeah, will spread like crazy with the humidity. I have brought home so many tropicals that have lots filled w baby maidenhairs
