  • I've had my Davallia fern for over two years now and its been almost two years since my last update. In that time it has grown a lot and is now starting to grow outside of its tray and lava rock. In this video I explain where the fern has been living for the last two years and I start propagating one of the rhizomes in the hope of getting a second plant.

    Boy! Great video! I didn’t know it grows through the rhizomes (I didn’t know what those things were - nor their purpose). I didn’t know the rhizomes should not be allowed to dry out, etc … thank you.

    You could put some lava rocks on the ground next to it and the risoms will attach to them

      Yes that would work, although I've yet to find a good source of lava rocks, the only ones I've found are very small.

    I have one and I live in Colombia, so I just leave it outside under some sade but where it receives all the rainwater... I never touch it and it's growing out of bounds, it'll soon take over my house 😂😂

    As you mentioned, they grow well in soil, too. I got a miserable little Davallia with only two leaves a year back, which now thrives potted in/on soil (with extra bark) under a grow light, but I'd love to try growing it on a lava rock, it looks very elegant! Where do you buy the rocks? I looked in the local garden stores after your first video, but they didn't have any 🙁 I'm wondering if the Davallia might be ok with growing suspended tied to a ball of moss or similar, too? 🤔

      I've seen the lava rock plants in a few garden centres, although only one nursery is currently growing them and they are based in The Netherlands, so I think they are only available in Europe and the UK. I've not yet been able to find where to get the rocks without plants attached as I would like to try growing a few of my other plants with this method. Yes It should grow great in a kokedama style moss ball, I might actually transplant my new cutting to a kokedama moss ball once its rooted.

    How did you initially attach the fern to the lava rock?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 роки тому +6

      I bought it already attached, it seemed to be planted in a small hole at the top. I think they planted it as a small plant with a tiny amount of soil. Then as it grew it ancored itself by rooting into the small holes in the lava rock.

    hey, i wanna use this for a terrarium. If i was to take a leaf cutting and plant it would it be able to survive and root in or does it have to have the rhizome?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 роки тому +1

      I think it has to have some rhizome attached, a leaf on its own won't survive.

    How well does it work in a terrarium, and how do i put it into a smaller terrarium?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  10 місяців тому +1

      It should grow very well in a terrarium as it likes high humidity, however its leaves do get fairly large and so a small terrarium might not be suitable. To put it in a terrarium you cut off a piece of the creeping rhizome and place it in, if it has a bud it should grow new roots and a leaf.

    • @sage_za795
      @sage_za795 10 місяців тому +1

      @@Gardeningat58N Thanks! I know it has large leaves, so will it mean more maintenance or will it simply not work?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  10 місяців тому

      @@sage_za795 if the terrarium is a good size it could work, or if you keep it well pruned it will have smaller leaves. Also you could prune the leaves to just have one side leaflet on each frond, that way it will look like a small leaf.

      No, you need to have a piece of rhizome attached to each leaf for it to work.
