When I was a teenager back in the 1970's I grew a few ferns on a (groovy) formica coffee table by my bedroom window with moderate success. I never tried growing this one though. Our climate is just so dry, I think I will give this one a go in our bathroom as at least there is a teeny bit of humidity there. Great to see ferns in general are making a comeback.

I just purchased 2 of these yesterday!!! (NW Florida Panhandle). This video has been the most informative I've found! I will wait until next year to repot them! THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you for this info! I love my rabbit foot fern and would like to split it or propagate it but I’m concerned about damaging my plant, which if I do say, is fabulous! I have the plant in a pot and then the pot on a cake stand so the roots and fronds trail all the way down.

Hi Jeff, I've been thinking of making one of those fern balls this spring also. I might start with a smaller one just to see how it goes first. If you do decide to make one could you please do a video? I really love your videos as I've told you in the past. You just know how to explain things and etc. There is always something to learn and laugh about in your videos! Take care, have a great weekend, and will be waiting for the vlog tomorrow!
Hi, Brandi! I'm certainly going to film the fern ball process. I might screw it up, but then everyone will be able to learn from my mistakes. lol! Thank you for always making me feel good about what I'm doing on here! Hope you have a great weekend also!
Just subscribed. Love your presentation. I was house-sitting for a couple who had a selection of these plants and I was totally intrigued by their growth. I just found them so interesting with the tails that they extended beyond the pot. Darryl
Hey Darryl! Welcome to my channel! Yeah, they really are fun and unique plants. I'm glad you commented on this one because it reminded me that i need to repot all of mine.
Thank you for posting this. I'm seriously considering getting this fern even though I haven't had good luck with other ferns. You never know.....! I'm anxious to see you do the fern ball! TFS!
ooooooooooooooooohhhhh, a ball of Rabbit's Footies would be soooooo cool. So I got my two little jades from Mountain Crest Gardens. They're small, same as the two inch ones from Lowe's or HD, two plantlets per pot. The Hummel's Sunset isn't as colorful as the pic on their website (no gold), maybe it gets better as they get bigger, but the Tricolor is really nicely colored.
loved the video! I have a rabbit foot fern that I recently repotted as it was looking VERY sad. The rhizomes were dark brown and hard, and the leaves were sparse. I cut back quite a lot of brown, stiff rhizomes before repotting. I'm thinking now that my new pot is probably too big for it. Here's hoping it survives..
Love your videos must say and you have motivated me to get a Rabbits foot fern i definitely will but it in a aquarium which im hopeing to do soon thanks for sharing ❤
Nice video. You answered my question...I was wondering how to propagate them. I had one as a child that my mom killed while I was at camp lol and my daughter gave me one for my birthday which has grown majorly
No lie i JUST got back from home depot where i saw this plant. I picked it up and saw these hairy roots and screamed top of my lungs....and threw the plant 10 ft. I thought it wad a tarantula
I got the Bronze Venus fern from Lowes and it is doing ok indoors of far, don't know why it has that name it's just a green fern but I like the way the frond spilt into five like a hand with fingers, I would love to see you do the fern ball, great video
I bought mine a few months ago and had it by a big window, which it seemed to love... until summer hit. I didn’t know anything about taking care of it and was just watering it occasionally. I went to check on it today to find some badly burned and brown frons. So shes been relocated and is getting a lot of tlc and I started misting her. I didn’t know to do that! In my defense she’s my first fern.
Walmart had a bunch of plants shoved to the side to make room for Christmas decorations. Rows upon rows upon rows of dead and dying plants. Sad English ivies, unidentifiable crispy leafy plants, a droopy philodendron of some sort simply labeled as "houseplant". The only 3 plants that looked like they were not only still alive, but still vibrant (though with some dying fronds), were 3 rabbit foot ferns. Generally speaking, in my experience, plants that grow from ribosomes or bulbs tend to be hardier than standard leaf/stem/roots sort of plants. So much energy can be stored in those ribosomes for emergency situations. Like stressed-out employees forgetting about them as they prepare for the busy season, lol. I felt so bad for the little guys I purchased one, but as soon as I got home I thought "drats, I should have grabbed the other two, too." lol. If they're still there next time I probably will. If they're still there, I see a #fernball in my future, lol. Thanks for the video. :)
Love my rabbits foot fern as well. I am in a 7 to 8 zone and mine loves living on the back porch where it gets direct sun first thing in the morning for a short time then indirect sun the rest of the day. It flourishes there during all the warm months and then I bring it inside for the months where there is a threat of frost. It definitely prefers outside life and thins out during the dormant months. I just repotted it after it got HORRIBLY overgrown and root bound. I went way too long. I’m going to try rooting some rhizomes so we shall see how that goes as I’ve never done it before.
I bought a white rabbit's foot fern along with a staghorn fern ten months ago and also propagated a tiny maidenhair fern seedling I found growing in a Bromeliad pot I got a few months later. The rabbit's foot started dying within a few months as did the staghorn. The staghorn I managed to save and it's growing nicely again while the rabbit's foot was dead a few weeks later. The maiden hair, meanwhile, is thriving the whole time..
Go figure right? that is what i meant in the video when i said fern care can be wonky. The harder ferns can thrive for people while the easier ones die for seemingly no reason even when grown under ideal care.
I just picked up one of these from Home Depot. I wanted a fern for my bathroom...I have a big window by the tub that gets nice indirect sunlight. I picked up the pot and they had it marked as a lemon fern, but then my finger touched one of the furry parts and I nearly screamed when I looked because I literally thought it was a tarantula coming out of the soil. I gave it a goog and realized it was a rabbit foot fern, not a lemon. I bought him.
I've had mine about a week now and I fret and fuss over it but don't really physically mess with it aside from misting it a few times a day, lol. I love ferns so much but oof do they trigger some plant mom anxiety in me.
I have one in the bathroom, NZ houses are fluctuating with temperature plus I wasn't misting it so it is just surviving....:-( Would love to get it bushy and lush green, will try to propagate them and pay more attention to them. Fingers crossed for me please peeps.
My old girl and I have a love hate relationship. She hates being inside during the winter and loves the deck in the summer. Her “feet” have grown all over the side of the pot, so I guess I need to repot. But she is already in a huge pot. Maybe I should divide her. Then I would have two babies to take care of 😊
I just purchased one about three days ago. Love it💕 I think I need to repot it, the feet are half way down the pot all the way around! I can't even see the soil, so many rhizomes covering the soil surface. Tried putting my finger down there.... 🤨 I'm sure she's probably root bound...how can I re-pot without hurting her multitudes of furry feet? 🤔
My rabbit foot gives me trouble. It was getting filtered morning sun and dispite moving her into my shower she has not let me forget how pissed she was. 🙄 I will try frequent light watering! Thank you ❤️
So I just got my rabbits foot fern Humanta tyermanii a couple days ago and mine does not have any of those cute furry roots, I was wondering if maybe it's still a wee baby and doesn't have them yet or how long it will take to start growing them?
Just subbed. I love my rabbits foot fern, but its not as full or lush as I wish it would be. The cats like to nibble on it a bit. During the winter I have it sitting next to a humidifier. MN winters are very dry!
I struggle with the rabbit's foot fern. My other ferns do just fine, but this one has been so fussy for me. Also, I have reused the wicks before with no issues.
Lmaoo I got one like a year ago. It's pretty darn sad right now. Like its doing okay but definitely could be a lot better. Not as full as the ones in the video but a lot larger in size. I live in a location with extremely low humidity so I am going to find a dish to put rocks and water in (I mist it as well but poor b doin a sad)
They should be called spider ferns, hihihi!! They kind of freak me out, even though I don't mind (small) spiders, I find them fascinating, really. I guess I'm not a fern person either, and yet I've just boiught two, hoping I can actually care for them. Thank you for the tips!!!!!
Please help! I recently purchased a great looking Rabbits Foot Fern. I took it home and hung it in front of a window that gives it indirect sunlight. It was thriving until after about 2 weeks and I watered it lightly. I followed the directions on how to give nutrients (half strength diluted) and all of a sudden over the last 2 weeks it has yellowed, wilted and the frawns are falling off. There Is also new growth but it looks wilted and sparse. I really love this plant and want it to thrive again. What would you suggest?
Hello! There could be a lot of different things going on so it's hard to give a straight forward answer. 1. Is the soil wet? -wilted, pale and yellow foliage can be from over-watering or just soil that is holding onto too much moisture. 2. If the yellowing happened right after fertilizing then that could be fertilizer burn. In the future try a 1/4 dilution just to be safe. 3. plants can have an "adjustment period" when going from a nursery into the home. So sometimes they will look great for awhile then drop foliage and the new foliage will grow in differently. This is normal sometimes and it just the plant adjusting it's growth form to better suit it's new environment. The rabbit's foot ferns in this video now look fairly different, their fronds are shorter and spread further apart... this is because the place that was growing them had them in different lighting, with different humidity and air flow, oh and temperatures. If the soil isn't staying constantly wet after watering then I wouldn't just straight to repotting it just yet. Maybe let some more new foliage develop and see if maybe you think it needs a new soil. This is a common issue with a lot of houseplants, I will try and address it in this weekend's vlog in more depth. :)
Thank you for the response!! I'm leaning towards thinking it may be due to nutrient burn, under watering :-( and also transition. I was super glad to see that this morning Fred (that's my ferns name) appears to be looking a bit better!! Fingers crossed!! :-) If it is nutrient burn.. will he be ok?
Love your videos!!! I have a rabbit foot fern and I need help! I got mine and had no idea what the rhizomes were. New to trying to grow plants. I assumed they should be buried in the soil like roots. I got some more plants and started to research, and realized they should be above soil!! I repotted it and brought the rhizomes out. The rhizomes appear yellow and to lack hair. I believe parts of them are rotting. I wish I could post a picture! What should I do? Trim the bad parts off? Leave it? Let them dry out a little? Thank you!
Just got a HUGE one from a family friend... long tendrils hanging onto the table top - is that a problem? I may try to propagate some minis? I'll be back if I need advice! Love your channel!
I have one that got missed when watering.... one or 3 times... RIP.. or is it? The foliage is shot but his fuzzy foot and roots are still ok. Can I cut back all the foliage and just care for the fuzzies? Do you think he would resprout?
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks for such a quick reply on an old video. After cleaning up the dead foliage there are a few little sprouts! 3 to be exact but it's a start!
Woot woot! It should be ok, they are a tough and forgiving fern. I've had them in reptile enclosures where it's 100°F and they would die back and sprout right back and repeat. ... they were in the enclosures to be eaten by the lizard.
I love your videos! Always cheer me up and relaxing to watch ☺🙌 I have a question for anyone that can help, I just got a little maidenhair fern from lowes in this koko ball planter thing, they put it in a paper cup container in there with no holes and its water logged and it stinks a little bit so I'm panicking. I cant find any good info on how to help waterlogged and repotting it should I hide 3% hydrogen peroxide on its soil?? I hope somone can help! Thank you anyway
Well hello, Healing Indigo! Great name! If it is stinky then I would go ahead and just repot it. Get as much of the old and stinky soil out off the roots as possible and repot it with a potting mix that drains well. Using a standard all-purpose potting mix then adding some sand and orchid bark works well. I know saying "some" is rather vague. Maybe enough bark and sand so that it makes up for 1/4 to 1/3 of the soil blend. Peroxide works well for disinfection but since ferns have delicate roots I would be cautious if you decide to also spray the roots before repotting.
hey! i bought one of these from the clearance section. its rhizomes are so brown, but the tips are white. is there a way to fix this? i read they need more moisture, but i was wondering if these would turn back to being white or if i should look for new growth to determine if i’m doing a good job at reviving it sorry for the long question !
I just picked up two of them the other day from Lowe's and want to put them both in one pot, as they are small...When I saw them I just thought how cute and never saw one and I love to have different ferns...Would now be a good time to repot? I live in Central Texas
I love these ferns but they keep getting scale and it's so hard to get rid of them as the frans are so delicate. I have been using a mix of rubbing alcohol and water and wiping them off branch by branch. It takes forever, inevitably I miss some and they come back and spread to other plants! Makes me want to cry! Ugh, so frustrating. Do you have an easier way you get rid of scale and keep it gone? Thank you so much for your video!
Hi, great video. One question. This plant, it's very hard to know when to water because mine's soil never gets dried (always contains some moisture). Normally I've been told that I need to wait for the soil to get dried before the next watering. Is it ok to water this plant before the soil is dried? Thanks.
It's winter here and my rabbits foot fern is suffering. It's near a wood stove. I've thinking of repotting into a terrarium for more humidity. Many of the fern fronds have dried up and I've removed. It's operation rehab my fern. Any suggestions?
I have had mine for a few weeks now, he started to turn a bit yellow/brown - I think he just needs some more misting! Fingers crossed. And now I want to try and do a clipping and get another one going- it wont cause damage to the main plant if I cut one of his '"feet"?
I love my rabbits feet.. they seem to just be happy no matter what I do to them. One of my cats hates one of then specifically and is constantly knocking it off surfaces and out of the pot, but as long as I mist it every morning, we’re fine. I wouldn’t even be able to tell if the pots weren’t different colors. I was wondering if you’re supposed to thin them out somehow? They’ve grown so thick so quickly and I’m very new to plants.
Hi, Dawn! Sometimes they also just throw a bit of a fit from the change in environment between the nursery and home. If new fronds come out and brown then a pebble tray may help to increase humidity. However, it's entirely possible that it just needs to adjust to it's new home. 🙂 good instincts to go ahead and repot it!
I’d really like to know how.can I repot my beautiful rabbit foot Ferm. It’s getting so big for the small pot, and the roots are to long and totally grabbing the pot all around it. I want to repot it in a large pot but I have no idea what to do with the roots I don’t want to ruined it. Thanks
Don't know if your still answering questions about this fern but I'm going to give it a shot. the feet on mine are brown. I have never had them outside nor do I think I am over watering them because I use a moisture thermometer. I mist the plant at least twice a day and I have recently re-potted them using orchid bark mixed in with peat, potting soil and some sand. pls help.
Just found you! I have one of these and she's 120years old. She used to belong to my ex-husband's grandmother who got it from her Mum
120years! That's the beat kind of heirloom there could be!
I would love to see a picture of it that’s amazing

Callum Purvis wow! So you don’t even cover the cutting? I just was going to try this.
Hi! How long did it take for your cuttings to make leaves? Ive had mine for about a month and theyre just sitting there :(
should be 1-2 months in warm climate, it's been winter here and my cuttings are doing nothing, should start going once things warm up.@@OsirusHandle

Hi, Brandi! I'm certainly going to film the fern ball process. I might screw it up, but then everyone will be able to learn from my mistakes. lol! Thank you for always making me feel good about what I'm doing on here! Hope you have a great weekend also!
Just got a cutting got to find how to start it. But thanks for the knowledge of them
Great video! Thank you so much for it. Always wanted and just got a rabbitts foot fern yesterday and wasnt sure how to repot.
thank you!
Just subscribed. Love your presentation. I was house-sitting for a couple who had a selection of these plants and I was
totally intrigued by their growth. I just found them so interesting with the tails that they extended beyond the pot.
Darryl
Hey Darryl! Welcome to my channel! Yeah, they really are fun and unique plants. I'm glad you commented on this one because it reminded me that i need to repot all of mine.
One of my favorite ferns!
Your channel is super helpful And easy to understand!!
Got one for Halloween coming up! Hopefully it lasts till then but with these tips it looks like a bright future for my fella!
Thank you for posting this. I'm seriously considering getting this fern even though I haven't had good luck with other ferns. You never know.....! I'm anxious to see you do the fern ball! TFS!
I haven't ordered the ball yet! Can't find one I like. I might just wire a couple of small hanging baskets together.
I'm sure that whatever you come up with will be fantastic!
@@TropicalPlantParty So what did you end up planting it in? I just got one and am trying to find something interesting to use to repot it in, also.
Great video,I will be on the hunt for this fern.
thank you, Gracie!
You are funny! Just what I needed today!
Thank you for all this information! I love the look of these ferns but mine is kinda suffering, I will try out some of your tips!
Thanks for the info, I just realised I have one of these 😂 so now I will look after it properly.. I was treating it the same as my maiden hair!
ooooooooooooooooohhhhh, a ball of Rabbit's Footies would be soooooo cool.
Michael; I planted mine in a hanging wooden Vanda Basket so it's toes can peak out :)
I was wondering if the color would be true to the pictures. Hopefully it colors up for you!
I love the way that looks!
loved the video! Here's hoping it survives..
sounds like you have good plant instincts! They are generally pretty tough ferns.
Love your videos must say and you have motivated me to get a Rabbits foot fern i definitely will but it in a aquarium which im hopeing to do soon thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you, Plant Mommy! A rabbit's foot fern in an aquarium sounds lovely!
wow this was SOOO SOO SOO helpful!! Thank you
I'm glad to have been helpful! Thank you! I hope you are staying safe and healthy!
I thought it wad a tarantula
lol! Aww poor rabbit's foot fern!
@@TropicalPlantParty i repotted it thankfully it was mostly all roots but i was seriously freaked out
😂🤣😂🤣
I got the Bronze Venus fern from Lowes and it is doing ok indoors of far, don't know why it has that name it's just a green fern but I like the way the frond spilt into five like a hand with fingers, I would love to see you do the fern ball, great video
I have seen those "bronze" ferns and wondered why the name, maybe with certain temps or lighting the foliage changes color?
I bought mine a few months ago and had it by a big window, which it seemed to love... until summer hit. I didn’t know anything about taking care of it and was just watering it occasionally. I went to check on it today to find some badly burned and brown frons. So shes been relocated and is getting a lot of tlc and I started misting her. I didn’t know to do that! In my defense she’s my first fern.
Fantastic detail thanks!!
Great idea, thanks friend!
No problem, Sherry!
I have always wanted one of these! I think I might not kill it...maybe.😆
Give them a try! Maybe when you travel you can just toss a lightweight, translucent bag over them to hold some moisture in.
I've just got one of these and it was named black foot fern. Live in Florida, keeping it outside.
I can relate to being triggered and feeling the plant anxiety! Hopefully this one will do well for you and be an easy houseplant. :)
I have one in the bathroom, NZ houses are fluctuating with temperature plus I wasn't misting it so it is just surviving....:-( Would love to get it bushy and lush green, will try to propagate them and pay more attention to them. Fingers crossed for me please peeps.
So my Fern has a ton of furry roots, but not all that much foliage. What might my issue be?
I will try frequent light watering! Thank you ❤️
So I just got my rabbits foot fern Humanta tyermanii a couple days ago and mine does not have any of those cute furry roots, I was wondering if maybe it's still a wee baby and doesn't have
them yet or how long it will take to start growing them?
Hi Whitney! Usually the fuzzy roots come with age, once the roots in the soil establish themselves, the runner roots should start grow for you. 🙂
don't you have problems with fungus gnats? if so how do you keep them away for good?
Just subbed. I love my rabbits foot fern, but its not as full or lush as I wish it would be. The cats like to nibble on it a bit. During the winter I have it sitting next to a humidifier. MN winters are very dry!
Your doing God's work
I struggle with the rabbit's foot fern. My other ferns do just fine, but this one has been so fussy for me. Also, I have reused the wicks before with no issues.
Ferns are just weird! What is an easy fern for a lot of people can be a finicky prick for others.
Just bought one from Lowe’s and it has wicking strings
They should be called spider ferns, hihihi!! They kind of freak me out, even though I don't mind (small) spiders, I find them fascinating, really. I guess I'm not a fern person either, and yet I've just boiught two, hoping I can actually care for them.
Thank you for the tips!!!!!
yes spider ferns would be a more accurate description! I'm glad they call them rabbit's foot fern though, much more cute! lol!
I have a really large Rabbits foot fern, I love its hairy legs... 🕷️
Thanks for your great tips. How do you take care of the rabbits foot fern when you go on vacation over a week and a half? Tks for your advice.
So I keep mine in my shower since they love humidity
If it is nutrient burn.. will he be ok?
Love your videos!!! I have a rabbit foot fern and I need help! I got mine and had no idea what the rhizomes were. New to trying to grow plants. I assumed they should be buried in the soil like roots. I got some more plants and started to research, and realized they should be above soil!! I repotted it and brought the rhizomes out. The rhizomes appear yellow and to lack hair. I believe parts of them are rotting. I wish I could post a picture! What should I do? Trim the bad parts off? Leave it? Let them dry out a little? Thank you!
Thanks
Just got a HUGE one from a family friend... long tendrils hanging onto the table top - is that a problem? I may try to propagate some minis? I'll be back if I need advice! Love your channel!
I have one that got missed when watering.... one or 3 times... RIP.. or is it? The foliage is shot but his fuzzy foot and roots are still ok. Can I cut back all the foliage and just care for the fuzzies? Do you think he would resprout?
As long as the roots are still alive it will likely come back for ya!
Peroxide works well for disinfection but since ferns have delicate roots I would be cautious if you decide to also spray the roots before repotting.
hey! i bought one of these from the clearance section. its rhizomes are so brown, but the tips are white. is there a way to fix this? i read they need more moisture, but i was wondering if these would turn back to being white or if i should look for new growth to determine if i’m doing a good job at reviving it
sorry for the long question !
I just brought one home. The leaves are drying out even with misting. I will try repotting it. Any other tips?
Never owned one but i might
They are unique and fun!
Did you make the fern ball?
what soil do they like best?
I’d really like to know how.can I repot my beautiful rabbit foot Ferm. It’s getting so big for the small pot, and the roots are to long and totally grabbing the pot all around it. I want to repot it in a large pot but I have no idea what to do with the roots I don’t want to ruined it. Thanks
Don't know if your still answering questions about this fern but I'm going to give it a shot. the feet on mine are brown. I have never had them outside nor do I think I am over watering them because I use a moisture thermometer. I mist the plant at least twice a day and I have recently re-potted them using orchid bark mixed in with peat, potting soil and some sand. pls help.
I have seen them labeled white or brown rabbits foot Fern. I actually had a brown one but didn’t treat it right. I’ve got two white foot now
Do you think this could be grown as an emergent plant with the finer subterranean roots in an aquarium?
