I am convinced there are many people who wanted to end things and then found Ren's music and didnt... They anxiouly await each song drop while hanging on 💔🖤
Back in 2023, Ren did an interview with Knox Hill. They both talked about losing people, and it was the first time Ren had talked about losing Joe. It inspired Ren to write the 2nd half of this song a week or two before it came out. He recorded it as he wrote it, a sentence or two at a time, so he would be able to get through it.
Ren is the only artist to consistently touch me with his voice/music/talent/skill/life experience. I’ve never shed so many tears at music, but they are for young Ren, not me, and I’ve also never been so invested in wanting someone to succeed and be able to live his life. I have nothing in common with Ren’s life, so he’s not healing me or helping me spiritually, I just love everything he does and respect his moral compass, strength of will and fighting spirit.
I love how in this song run deliberately says the word suicide again and again and again. I think that in today’s age where you can’t even say this on UA-cam or other platforms, it is a brave and a smart thing to do. That repetition almost in a way takes away the stigma of using that word and talking about the real issue so we stopped dancing around it. genius. Thanks for this reaction and all of your insights.
@@SableCatDogIt's also because not talking about it and the feeling that it's never the right time to talk about it is a big part of the problem. And when someone already finds themselves in that situation, they hardly can get help without talking about it. I remember that one female psychologist/chiatrist reactor had a great analysis on this part.
@snihjen8470 Retired Granny Renegade here. Maybe I can help with my own insights from my past experience working with young people and my thoughts on that bar. It hits me like a punch to the heart every time I hear it. My heart breaks for Ren every time I hear his words. Ren lost the innocence of youth when Joe jumped off the bridge. Young people feel immortal “I miss missing feeling indestructible as Hell. The day you jumped my childhood jumped too….” Young people tend to live in the moment. They are silly, playful, bold, and carefree. They are uninhibited by the knowledge of their own mortality and/ or death anxiety until they are faced with the reality of death by the loss of someone close to them or a part of their lives in some way. Ren also expresses survivor guilt perfectly in this part of the track too. I have my own issues with survivor guilt. I’m so grateful for Ren’s authenticity and his work to destigmatize suicide and get people talking. He honors Joe and keeps his memory alive by sharing the story of his loss, grief, and his love for his friend. You are loved and missed, Joe Huges. ☮️
He's numbed himself to the point where he no longer wishes things were the way they used to be. He knows it's not possible, so he buries it deep in his psyche.
For me, I miss missing the friends of my past because it’s been so long that I know it’s truly gone. It feels pointless to miss because it’s so far out of reach in reality. Even reaching out now, so much time has passed and trauma has affected who I am so much that it wouldn’t be the same. I’ve changed, my perspective and awareness, so my innocence and naivety that fueled my easy happiness is gone. That time is forever locked in the past with a different version of myself and them. I’ve already mourned missing it and am stuck in acceptance. If any of that makes sense lol
@Rose-hg1ti makes a lot of sense. Acceptence is the final stage in grief, but I don't think people understand that grief is cyclical and goes at its own pace. Acceptance is a good place to be in. Healing is possible lke he said but it doesn't remove all the pain. Grief is actually one of the reasons I've servived major depressive disorder to be looking at age 61 in a few short months. Ren gets it, whichh is why he can publish a song with that title and still people listen.
You paused at one of my favorite images from this video. The skulls turning into faces and then in to raised fists. The sequences may start scary with death but ends with strength and a continued will to fight. 1:21
Your reaction brought me to heavy flowing tears especially the internalising guilt. Your reaction hit me so differently to anyone else... thankyou from a survivor
So powerful. Thankfully Ren was able to learn from his friends death & seeing the devastation on the family & friends, to not take his own life in the midst of his torturous pain, psychosis, and helplessness. It took extremely strong willpower. ❤❤❤ I can not even imagine the anguish of being too late to save your best friend. No wonder it has stuck with him so strongly. Just heart crushing. Completely different to just hear a loved one has done it, which is tragic enough, but to be running in a panic and they are just gone minutes before. 😢😢😢 My own daughter has BPD and several other conditions with suicidal ideation. It has been a long struggle, but she is determined to not give in for the same reason; to not devastate us, her family, and because she does want to attain her goals, as difficult as it is. As a parent, it has been extremely stressful, heartbreaking, & worrisome but thankfully no self harming for over a year now. DBT x 2 and medication that she hates because she cannot think clearly or remember things (feels dumbed down), is helping to have a more peaceful existence with less harsh triggering episodes. She & bf live at home now though so we can keep things that way as well. More support.
Don't know if you've ever seen his video from 2014 and the state he was in at that time, heart breaking really, so glad to see he was able to pour that into a song and see him do better today (in spite of his temporary physical relapse) - i was born with the feeling that the world is better off without me & the sense that I don't belong here, but i am 50 now so i have surrendered to that fact and just pick myself up daily. I ♥ Ren
Ahhh, you are so good! Yes, this song is about life. We go on, taking the memories of those we have lost with us. Ren has said life is beautiful and life is cruel. A mixed bag for sure but made better when we have music and healing souls surrounding us. Great reaction, thank you 🎉
I love your reaction to "Suic!de". Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. An excellent follow up to this is "For Joe"... I know you'll love it!
This produced video was dark and filled with pain and frustration. This starts with that pain but continues with what Joe and all his actions has taught and given Ren. You need to hear “For Joe” which starts with the ending bars or the ending poem but shows Ren healing not that he ever gets over Joe’s actions, but an acceptance of what has happened with all the pain involved. At this point Ren knows intellectually there was nothing he could have done but obviously emotionally is a different story. There lies the pain along the pain of missing Joe.
He has another suicide song called For Joe. That's the friend he lost to suicide years ago...such a great great song. I can relate to it having just lost my brother to suicide. His words described how I felt which I couldn't do myself. THANKS ren.
I really admire you choice to use the "S" word with conviction throughout the video. I'm sure others warned you that the mighty UA-cam censorship engine, will not look so favorably on this choice. But it is so important to talk freely and openly about this matter (even if the powers that be frown upon it!) I applaud you, keep up the good work. Even if this message reaches one troubled soul and helps them out. It is a victory to human Kind, in unkind times...
It makes me cry every time and it’s a good thing bcs I have a hard time crying for my own reasons at least I can let a little of it out when I hear this. ❤ thank you for your thoughtful reaction ❤
I like the metaphore of the tracks you pointed out. Very thoughtful and I hope Ren did mean to put them in for the reason you suggested! Because it's brilliant
I felt the use of A.I to make the video gave it that uncanny valley effect, making the entire viewing a surreal fever dream. It reminded me of the disconnected or disassociated feelings that can occur during bouts of depression and suicidal ideation. The way faces shift into different people, reminding us that anyone and everyone can be struggling. Seeing figures blink in and out of existence in the video, a subtle nod of the fleeting span of life. The monolog at the end was inspired after Ren's interview with Knox Hill. Ren has said the song felt incomplete, and talking about the past helped him find the next level of closure, being able to express the pain he's held onto for so long. He recorded the lyrics as they came to him and left the finished product as raw and truthful as possible.
Thank you, Jim for sharing your thoughts and insights on Ren’s powerful work. This track is packed with meaning. I have it on a daily playlist for many personal reasons and have shared it with several people. I plan to share your reaction video with a few more who need to hear your interpretation. Humans really must learn to stop shying away from discourse on the subject of suicide. It’s not helping. Ren does a brilliant job of normalizing and diffusing the taboo of the word suicide by repeating it over and over in the song. New sub to your channel for more in depth content.
What a great breakdown, thank you for that. A positive way to explain that this feeling sucks but it's necessary to feel it and then move on past it. 😊
Been thoroughly enjoying your take on music from a psychotherapy angle. As such, I'd love to see you react to "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" by Dream Theater. Its a long piece (over 40 min, in 8 total parts. You might do it as a series or one real long video) but even if you don't decide to react to it, I think you'd really enjoy listening to it as 7 of the 8 parts deal with various aspects of mental illness (the first part "Overture" is just instrumental). I think you'll enjoy the music as well as the lyrics (you may want a box of tissues for part V). So far most of the reactions to this piece are from musicians/composers so it would be refreshing to get your professional reaction to it.
