    Back again, this time to share an "Our Spyder saved our lives" story. A few months ago, I trailered my 2019 Spyder RTL from Colorado to Idaho Falls, Idaho, just outside of Wyoming. My wife, a rider with very little experience, wanted to cruise up to Jackson Hole and see all the sights that frig'n mountain held. We did, and it rained off and on until around 3:00 PM. Long story short, we were approximately 2 1/2 hours from our Hotel and decided to head that way. The sky looked like it would cooperate so off we went. We had just passed one town, the mountain is peppered with them, and it was about 25 miles to the next one, where we planned to make a quick pit stop. 18 miles into that jaunt, someone started dimming the lights. The sky went from relatively clear through every shade of gray within minutes. Then it started getting dark, very dark, very quickly. The rain began to fall as the ambient light vanished. We climbed uphill and around the bend. The wind that hit us picked me up and tossed me toward the right. Thankfully my left boot caught the edge of the tank preventing a full dismount. My wife was snug as a bug in the pillion area tucked in even more so with the assistance of armrests. I somehow maintained control of the machine, stopped it off the side of the road, and decided even though we were only a few miles from our next planned stop, we had to turn around and try to outrun this beast. As you might imagine, every vehicle for miles, especially those who had been in front of us, had the same idea. The storm was raging, very high winds, sideways rain, visibility jumping between 25-75 feet, and nowhere to pull over to, no shelter, nothing. I set the flashers hoping to prevent a rear-end collision, the road was beginning to flood, water halfway up to my hubs, having to maintain 45-55 mph in stay up with traffic and not getting run over. Many vehicles, every car and truck that passed us engulfed us in sheets of water, the temperature was in the '30s and we were soaked through and through all the way to the bone marrow. I had to mentally compartmentalize every moment so that it didn't interfere with the next. 23 miles later, we see a gas station with a huge covered pumping area and pulled in. Several people who'd seen us on the road stopped to offer assistance. All we could do is wait it out. A couple of hours later the storm had finally blown through and we worked our way back to our Hotel. After I returned to Colorado, I took the Spyder to the shop because the front-end alignment or something was off, I was experiencing a shimmy around 70 mph. As it turns out, the flood water had ripped all of the tire balancing weights from both front tires. There is little doubt as to our fate if we'd been riding on two wheels rather than the Spyder. The storm...was a Squall.

      Wow thanks Chuck, I love that you shared your adventure with me and everyone that reads this. I think sometimes riders fail to realize just what a fantastic machine these Spyders are, reading your story I can’t help but wonder if the outcome may not have so favourable if you’d been on a solo. Great review of the benefits of a Can Am. I had a major stroke about 5 years ago. Survived pretty well, however my balance never returned 100%. Steve, hi from San Antonio Texas. I'm Dj. I purchased my 2016 Can-Am Spyder RTS SE6 back in July 2020. I had to stop riding my 1993 Goldwing Aspencade 1500 due to a back injury from Desert Storm, which affected my hips and knees. I needed something more stable. Anyone looking for a none running GW get in touch. Steve the Spyder was the answer. What a great ride, just what GDoc ordered. Talk about a great ride, wind therapy heck yeah!!!!!!! The stability is frickin awesome. I was out for a short ride one Saturday traveling North approaching an intersection that's bad due to stupid drivers, I remembered from bike school to slow down when approaching intersection, at least 10 mph if not more. I was in the left lane of two lanes north and south. I saw the red car turn into there left turn lane, which she did not stop and drove into my path. Taking Evasive action I did a quick maneuver turning are yturning A-sharp left and then a right right and avoided running into her end up stopping in her turn land her turnlane. The spider's stabilization stop me from flipping of course it applied my brakes and throttled down my speed. My older go pro 3 caught all the action except for the plates were blurred I couldn't file charges on her. But one day I'll put it on UA-cam. The guys that designed the spiders did a great job but there's a few things they could have done better too bad they don't ask some of us writers out here I'm talking about USB ports and stuff on the bike an extra accessory outlets for switches for lights and things. But overall it's an awesome bike I love it. And if it wasn't for the stabilization computers on board I probably would have flipped the Spyder that day. I believe the Spyder is an awesome Spyder. Be Safe, Watch Out For The Stupid Drivers And Always Wear Your Safety Gear But Most Of All Enjoy The Ride Get Some Wind Therapy 🚔🇺🇲

    I have a 2012 Spyder. I live in the country here in the UK. There have been many times when I’ve hit a patch of mud, left by farm machinery. The bike takes care of me with ABS and stability control. I’m about to update to a 2023 Spyder RT Ltd. Being disabled the brand has allowed me to ride a bike, something I never thought would happen. I’ve even seen riders with their chair on the rear rack. You can’t do the on two wheel safely.

    I drive my RT Ltd like you do your F3S! It takes a lot more work but it's a blast. I do admit that I'm looking to trade mine for an F3S...just a matter of time because there's so much more one can do with it. For those who don't know the RT has the same engine, etc but is much heavier, sat on rather than in, touring suspension. blah, blah, blah. The RT is a great machine and perfect for a Goldwing-type experience. I just have too much hooligan in me that needs exorcising!

    • @standupmoto
      @standupmoto  2 роки тому +3

      Gday Chuck, I get that. I have a mate with the RT and I ride it often, your comparison with the Goldwings in spot on. I have a Goldwing also and I love it but it’s definitely the RT of CanAm’s. There is of course much footage that I can’t post on here of the F3S but let’s just say they are a lot of fun ridden a little more spirited than I show in this video. In wet conditions with the traction control off it’s a blast, it is necessary to up grade the front sway bar to a little heavier version to get the full ability of the F3S. If your really keen to exercise that inner hooligan add a Pedal Commander throttle response module (simple to fit & its plug and play) and it’s a complete package . ride safe Cheers.

I have the Ryker a 2021, debated at the time about the Spyder but had never owned a bike before so wasn't sure i would enjoy it, and the Spyder is considerably more money. I love riding my Ryker but now am thinking i would like the features of the F3S. Your videos are the clearest and most detailed on what the Spyder can do and the benefits of owning one.

Yes the Spyder is a great machine for sure but the Ryker is a fantastic launching pad, I wouldn’t be in a hurry to jump out of it.I do a lot of highway riding on mine so the Spyder is perfect for that but for sheer fun in the twisty stuff or on the unsealed roads the Ryker is great. If I could offer any advice for what it’s worth do a few thousand miles on the Ryker first. By that time you’ll know if the Spyder would suit your needs more than the Ryker, you live in a beautiful part of the world with your riding season coming on about now I believe so ride safe & enjoy, cheers.

    Hi, just watched the section re road condition and safety. New to Can-Am Spyder but had over 30 various motorcycles and purchased a 2010 RT on the weekend. Had to ride it back from Ballarat through some very heavy storms and can attest to the feeling of safety. Traveling along the Mallala to Balaklava road came across 50 to 75 mm of water across the road and apart from puckering up rode though it at night and at speed without losing traction and arrived at the other side safely. It was only the front wheels that hit the water as the drive wheel was in the centre where it was relatively dry. Am loving this purchase. Cejay.

    I enjoyed your video mate. As one who is ignorant of Can Am's (I have Honda CB500X), I'd like to ask some questions.
    * Do you have to fight centrifugal force to hang on around corners? I thought you would have to slow on corners to stop being thrown off.
    * Do you change gears on your bike or are they all automatics?
    * When reversing, are the mirrors on the handle bars or on the frame, and does it make it harder to see behind you?
    * Does the bike lean into corners?
    * How reliable are Can Ams?
    * What is your fuel consumption? Mine is around 3L/100km and some hybrid cars get 6.
    * How much is a Can Am? I thought they cost around $20k +
    I've got Buckley's of getting my wife on the back of my bike but a Can Am... she might go for that.
    I stopped at Stanwell Tops lookout once and had to be careful to park my bike so the left side was downhill for the sidestand. I can see how a Can Am would be a breeze in those conditions.
    Do you find you can't dodge potholes?
    Thanks again for your video. Great camera angles. Enjoyable commentary.

      Gday Roger, I completely understand your questions re the CanAm. As someone that rides both I love the differences between 2 & 3 wheels, they are so different but so much the same. • @chuckkelley5894
      @chuckkelley5894 Рік тому +1

      Hi Roger, yes they, especially the RT and RTL create some interesting moments in the corners initially. They can take awhile to adjust to. However, it’s more a rider’s adjustment than the machine’s. I have an RTL that I hit the twisties in daily here in Colorado. I really tiptoed it at first, now I easily double the posted speed and other bikes are hard pressed to keep up. So, it won’t take you long before you live for the curves. The Rykers are automatic, the Spyders are semiautomatic and will downshift automatically if you choose, I seldom do. There are several previous model Spyders out there with manual transmissions if you would rather that, just have to search them out or contact some of these National Motorcycle Dealers who could assist you in that quest. The mirrors are on the body and I’v never had any issues with them as I backup or at any point on a ride. They’re quite good. As for leaning in the curves, the suspension leans. More so as the speed and intensity of the maneuver, bank, etc of the turn/curve increases. I typically ride 100-150 miles every day the roads are ice free and I do as much of that as possible in the curves and twisties. Part of every ride I do is to never repeat the same turning technique on the ride. I use something different on each maneuver, different entirely and/or different combinations of techniques. I tend to Hooligan mine so my fuel consumption averages around 33 mpg. As I was learning how to dial it in, I averaged around 38 mph. It’s also approximately 2000 miles before it’s first time-up and that will probably increase the mpg some. I’m 6’1 250 lbs. Can Ams are extremely reliable. The shop at the
      dealership says they just don’t break down. I probably over do it on my end. I take it in every time I’m going on a long and/or out in the boonies ride to have them check it out. $100.00 is a very inexpensive cost for freedom of mind. As far as I know, they’ve never made any adjustments. They check everything out and it’s always good to good…and that’s good to know. As far as costs; it depends on where, when, and availability/supply and demand. I bought mine in the middle of Covid when the waitlist was a mile long. I ended finding a two year old machine with 3000 miles and paid current model list price for it. Another source you might check is Twisted Road and other services where a motorcycle owner rents their private vehicle out. There are probably some of those people who would consider selling. Also, Spyder rider clubs, etc. I bought my Spyder because I read how good they are for relationships…and it was the only configuration that my wife would consider riding on. It was hard to get her off the damn thing for the first year. She loves it and thank my lucky stars I now get my own time on it other than trips. Speaking of, if you’re not or your wife is not an Interstate person, Stinger Trailers in Canada manufactures one especially for Can Ams. They’re unbelievably inexpensive, they frig’n fold up when you want to store them, and they deliver them to your residence. We traveled 28 states last year and it’s much nicer to tow out in the truck and back it off the trailer on designated rides. Good luck in your hunt and enjoy your Can Am. Oh, a good tip for when you’re adjusting to particulars of operating these is to think of it as a three wheeled Go Kart with motorcycle controls.

    I test rode the Spyder about 15 odd years ago when they first arrived, and although a great machine, I felt it had no 'soul', no 'X Factor'. I was Very Surprised. Maybe the Can am's or I have changed???
    Are they expensive to maintain? ($$$) Service costs? ($$$)
    How long does the rear tyre last? - And cost?
    Reliability/problems?
    'Good motor'?
    What is the worst thing about the Ryker in your opinion?

    • @standupmoto
      @standupmoto  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Terry, snap on the age. I also (as you’ve probably guessed if you have been looking at my channel)) have many bikes. Snap again, I also test rode the CanAm’s when they first came out. They didn’t grab me either, they were a bit smaller, ran a not so reliable euro 1000cc V twin engine & didn’t sit flat enough for me. In saying that I know riders with them that have had a terrific experience with the earlier model. However the current incarnation of Spyder is a vastly different bike 14 on, larger in size, higher in hp with a 1330cc in line triple with about 115 hp, far superior suspension, cruise control & comes in sports (mine) and touring versions. Now to costs, maintenance I can’t honestly say as I do my own servicing but can’t see they should be any more expensive than a large capacity motorcycle.
      Rear tyre, well I may not be the best person to ask here as weeeeel I do tend to like using that 115hp however I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to get 15000k out of one. Had one recently put on recently it cost $275 AUD for the recommended tyre from CanAm but many use an automotive tyre @ about $175 AUD.
      Reliability wise , I have a 2017 F3S, a mate has the RT touring version & also a 20 model Ryker 900. Thus far we have had zero problems with any of them, however I do have to warn you they are ADDICTIVE. One of the reasons for this is it just doesn’t matter what the weather is, wet-windy-hot- cold, nothing upsets them and you’d have to do something pretty crazy to fall off.
      The Ryker is a blast , fast if you want it to be, handles like it’s on rails, more than happy on unsealed roads (as it’s shaft driven), smaller & lighter than a Spyder. It runs a 900cc triple or you can opt for the 600cc twin. Both are great machines, if your talking lots of highway use I’d say the Spyder because of the comfort, wind protection & std cruise control. You will now and then get your knocker’s but 9.99999 times out of ten they have never ridden one and have absolutely no experience on type and are maybe a little intimidated by them.
      My advice would be talk to owners, get some time on one if you can, you need at least an hour to get the feel and work out the different riding style.
      Hope this long answer to your questions helps, it’s always hard to get unbiased information from dealers. Feel free to email me if there is anything else I can help with.
      Cheers

At slower speeds it doesn’t really feel much different but well worth the money. Glad you enjoyed it and feel free to ask me anything you would like to know about this model, if I know I’ll certainly pass on anything I’ve learned over my ownership. if you more comfortable using email it’s standupmoto@gmail.com cheers.

      Thank you very much for your reply. I feel I may upgrade my sway bar. I have also rode motorbikes for most of my life. I am new to Can am and my F3S SE6 Feels strange to me when I corner. It may just take time but I feel that the opersite front wheel to the turn, is going to lift. I am from Ballarat. I watched both your Can am videos and they are the best I have seen. Cheers

      @@davidjenkin6400 Cheers Dave thanks, yeah they take some getting used to for sure but don’t worry she won’t lift. The stability control will kick in (commonly referred to as the nanny) and do all sorts of wired things to keep it stable. I have a friend with the same model as yours and it’s definitely a must fitting the up graded sway bar. Love Ballarat ! Did some Gyro training there years ago, bloody cold though. 👍

    Good video, however I don’t think you can compare to a can am ryker. I have just purchased a Ryker 900 and on some patches of road travelling at 70
    at 70 ks I hit areas of road and it feels dangerous. I am
    not sure if it is me just not used to it as I only just done over 600 ks on back roads until I get used . Any ideas?

    • @standupmoto
      @standupmoto  Місяць тому +1

      Gday, I’ve spent many many hours on a Ryker on all types of terrain, yes if you’re coming from two wheels the initial feeling of being loose when you hit slippery stuff will be unsettling. This is the type of road you’ve always been so wary of on a solo, the big thing to remember is to keep the front wheels aimed in the direction you want to go and let the rear move around. After a while it will become a natural way of riding, in fact you’ll get that used to riding this way you will try to induce the sliding style of turn.
      As you start your turn in briefly come out of the throttle, continue the turn in line then get back on the power & let the back come out. Basically you’ll be turning it with the throttle, start with small slides on loose surfaces in a big area with nothing to hit just in case you over hook it. Are you in my neck of the woods? As in South Australia. I’d be happy to spend some time with you to help you get the hang of it. Cheers.

      @standupmoto  11 місяців тому +1

      Hello, the model in the review is the 3 cylinder and so far it has been very reliable. I do run high quality oil and do regular oil changes every 3000km, the air filter is a 30 second removal process so it’s cleaned regularly also.

    I’m 38 and switching to a Can Am. Friends are already making fun of me but I don’t give a shit. I’ve ridden 2 wheels since I was 18 and have been lucky and never been down. But the white tail deer 🦌 are so bad here now that I miss one by a inch every time I ride. So many deer are jumping in front of me the anxiety is ruining my rides and trips. Im sick of it. On a can am I can hit a deer and not have to go down and eat the pavement! If I hit one on my motorcycle it’s about 100% chance I go down and get hurt pretty badly. I just want to ride in the wind and could care less about whether it’s on 2 or 3 wheels. I want my wheels to stay on the ground and me off the ground too! The deer are so bad here in the USA it’s a constant worry. They are like heat seeking missiles. So I’m done worrying about it. Im going to buy a Can Am and return to actually enjoying my travels without deer trying to kill me.

    • @standupmoto
      @standupmoto  2 роки тому +2

      Gday Johnny, yes I get your concerns re the deer. Anywhere here in Aus as soon as you get out of the city Kangaroos become an issue on the roads. Don’t worry about the mates, they’re probably just jealous and generally you’ll find once you make the move others follow. First time you’re on a group ride and it rains in the twisties you will disappear up the road in front of them and get to your destination stress free, no one will be making fun then. Good luck with your transition over to 3 wheels , find a good well kept CanAm and you’ll love it. Cheers.

      Hi Oz, yes some of the earliest models did have some issues. I think this was in relation to the European Vtwin motors, after 2014 I think CanAm went to the Rotax 1330 inline triple and things got sorted. So far touch wood mine and a mates have been great (touch wood).

    So I was in a motorcycle accident 2yrs ago and ready to get back into it, I'm looking at the RT Limited Spyder and Harley freewheeler, I like both but having a hard time deciding.. I know the spyder is stable as all get out. I've never tried the Freewheeler yet

    • @standupmoto

      Gday Mac, both great bikes your looking at. For me in my situation where being able to break & turn short and fast is a must due to the wildlife factor here in country Aus the Spyder is the choice. I’d do a bit of research and see if there are any real life comparisons on the net. By real life I mean not where the reviewer is sponsored or selling one or the other, i think either would be a nice machine. Cheers.

Over the next 6 months or so supply issues will normalize I’d suspect, that buys you time to do lots of research into both. Maybe drive down to the local coffee shop that riders go to on the w/end and chat with owners, get the pro’s and con’s. By the time you can actually buy either you’ll be an expert on both. Cheers

    As always, informative, entertaining and knowledgeable. Keep up the great work. I love my 2017 F3S, the same as yours. I went from a 2015 RTS over to the F3 so I could carry my wheelchair on the LHS. Video of my rack here: ua-cam.com/video/rLF0tMNLsr0/v-deo.html . You talked about handling in the wet. Splitting traffic is always Chancey anyway. How many times have people opened the car door to have a splitter crash into the door. The CanAm won’t allow this situation rarely.
