    What was primarily a problem for the US of A is now becoming an issue across the globe - here in Canada, it is reaching a new level.
    Our supply of Ozempic is dwindling - a new update from Novo Nordisk, the makers of Ozempic, has stated that the shortage will likely last until early 2024.
    So, what options do we have available? Are there any at all?
    Let's get into it.

    Great video!! Very knowledgeable. I quit taking Ozempic 6 weeks ago. I just couldn’t take the constant nausea, not being able to have a BM and ya know what. I have gained 27 pounds and my sugars are out of control. So it’s basically a lose lose for me 😢

Take it every Sunday, by the Tuesday I'm giving it my all from both ends, my diabetes nurse thinks it's making by blood sugars too low, took me off it for one month,and I put 4lbs back on 😮, re started the ozempic n same problem as before, due to speak to diabetic nurse this week n plan to come off it.maybe an alternative as I'm on it mainly to balance blood sugars. Good luck to you.x

    Hi Dr Dan, in Australia Novo Nordisk have said the shortage of Ozempic will last into late 2024. However, for any Aussie’s out there, you can now get Mounjaro. But it is not on the PBS so the cost is very high. $499-$899 per month. I’ve been on it for a month now, lost 2.5kg on the 5mg so it works really well. Before I was on 1.5mg of Ozempic. Before that 3mg Saxenda. Total loss 21.3 kg this year.

      @urkin One small positive: Apparently a generic version of Saxenda will hit the (US, at least) market in mid-2024.
      Should be quite a bit cheaper, I’d think. Not sure when it’d hit Canada. 🇨🇦

    My anxiety of the precariousness of Ozempic availability is Real! Luckily my pharmacy is a small Sobey’s, so there are not a ton of people that go there. I got a pen a week ago and they just secured me another this week, but I can’t live like this😂
    I had my follow up with Dr. Wharton and he said Mounjaro will be in a vial, not pens, for the time being 😮. Seems scary. When I asked his opinion he suggested I read ‘Surmount-1’.
    I was looking for your name of the long list of physicians Dr. Dan 😊
    When I called Eli Lilly, they said it was $70+ a vial, but she wasn’t sure if it was for the starting dose or all of the doses.
    Dr. Dan can you confirm or deny? Please? 😊

      @gablovesplantssydney 10 місяців тому +3

      Hi there, I can confirm that Mounjaro, in Australia, at least, comes in a single use vial. You draw it up with an insulin type needle and inject it. it is not difficult to do but can take a bit of practice in order to get all of the medication out of the vial. your doctor or chemist should be able to teach you how to do it. Also, the cost of the medication here changes with the dosage. The starting dose is 2.5 mg, but as I had been on Ozempic, I started on 5 mg. The 4 vials, so a months worth, cost me $440 Australian. You can do the exchange rate into Canadian dollars. I also purchased 4 vials of the 15 mg (thinking I would draw up half of the dose when I move Up to 7.5 mg and hopefully save some money). The 15 mg cost $899 for four weeks worth. If you think about halving the injection (so spreading it out over two weeks), just realise that it only comes in 0.5 mils of liquid which is a very small amount. I will be trying it out for the first time on Friday. Good luck if you try Mounjaro. So far, it’s working great for me. The only problem is remembering to eat, as I have no appetite at all and food noise is a thing of the past.past.

      @@gablovesplantssydney Hi Gab! Thank you for sharing your experience with me/us. I guess once I get used to getting it out of a vial it will be ok. It’s so clinical and I only ever see it done in the movies😂
      I think it would cost double of the Ozempic, which is $255 for a pen with 4 shots of 1mg, here in Canada.
      But if I forget to eat, I’d gladly pay double.
      Good luck on your health and weight loss journey ❤️

    • @gablovesplantssydney
      @gablovesplantssydney 10 місяців тому +2

      Thanks @zahararay5611, Ozempic here costs 130-150 a pen but we only have the .5 and 1mg pens not the 2mg. So to move to a dose of 1.5 I had to get two prescriptions ($300/month). Cheaper than Saxenda, which I started on which was $489/month. Apparently the shortages have something to do with the manufacture of the pens which is why Mounjaro is being offered in the vials. You will get used to it. after I gave myself the first shot, I injected water into the vial and practised getting it out again a few times until I was comfortable with it. So far, 21.3kg (47 pounds) down so def worth it. I think I’ve actually saved money as I am not buying as much food or alcohol. The wine society I am a member of can’t believe I haven’t bought cases from them this year. Good luck to you as well.

    Hi Dr Dan, great topic, look forward to it. ✅
    Was curious as to your opinion on one possible Ozempic alternative… ‘stacking’ older/weaker GLP-1s (such as Saxenda) with metformin in order to ‘goose’ the weight-loss performance up to something that’s closer to what Ozempic gives you. All done carefully/under a doctor’s supervision, of course.
    Though, the best Oz alternative of all is likely just simply Mounjaro, now that Canada’s finally getting it. 👌 🇨🇦

    • @theofficialdrdan
      @theofficialdrdan  10 місяців тому +4

      While in theory sounds good...real life outcome likely not going to match it. Lots of people have been using metformin and older glp1 combos for a long time in diabetes and we don't see the same level of benefit!

      @Dr Dan Ah, so it doesn’t really bridge the gap all that much.
      Thanks for the info. Pleased that you’ll be able to get your patients onto Monjauro soon (since Novo keeps screwing the pooch on Ozempic supply). 👍

    *Sidenote:* Mounjaro for weight-loss JUST got approved in the US, under the new brand named ‘Zepbound’. Dosages are the same, and there was a very small price increase.
    Mounjaro will continue to exist AFAIK, with its indication being for T2D. Interesting times in WL. 👍

      Typical of 60 minutes -- mostly scaremongering with little factual support. They admitted that the woman who died was actually taking BOTH Ozempic and Saxenda -- which sounds like she was abusing the drugs rather than taking the recommended dosage. The coroner report also did not blame Ozempic for the woman's death, but one of the doctors noted that if anyone experiences continual vomiting, they should stop taking the medication. Most people can handle GLP-1 / GIP drugs, but a few cannot, and there are sufficient warnings and contra-indications about side-effects. Unfortunately, it's impossible to idiot-proof these drugs, so a doctor's supervision is absolutely essential.

    • @gablovesplantssydney
      @gablovesplantssydney 10 місяців тому +2

      Completely agree. It was a typical hit job by 60 minutes, Australia. They also had an interview with an anorexic young man and claimed that these drugs were dangerous because anorexic people might try and use them to lose weight. Anorexic people or bulimic people have many more issues to deal with than just trying out medication like this. You cannot buy this medication in Australia without a prescription. And I seriously doubt any doctor is going to prescribe a GLP1 medication to someone who is anorexic. I did watch the entire segment and dismissed it as a beat up.

    • @VernCrisler
      @VernCrisler 10 місяців тому +4

      @@gablovesplantssydney Another significant problem with the woman who died is that she was losing weight for her daughters wedding. Instead of having a goal WEIGHT, she had a goal DATE. The latter puts an impossible burden on dieters. With a goal weight, however, dieters can be less deadline oriented and therefore more rational with their weight loss diet.

      It sounds like what you want is a video that focuses solely on comparing the side effects/side effect levels of all the most common weight-loss meds.

      But he does talk about side effects to a good extent already. Watch some of his vids. 🎞
