Not only that, the song is really an ode to the 60's; a generation lost in space (Don Mclean), and of hippies that ended with a whimper. It was in the lyrics "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969". What happened in 1969? Three things: 1. Woodstock in August 15-18 1969. 2. This song is classic! The dueling guitars at the end of the song are legendary! You guys completely got it. The nice thing about this song is that it's open to all kinds of interpretation, and folks are still offering up interpretations. It's a definite jam. Great review guys!
Don Henley (singer/drummer) once referred to the song as being about a "loss of innocence". Glenn Frey, who co-wrote the lyrics with Henley, said, "Everybody wants to know what that song was about, and we don't know." I think it's one of those great songs that can mean different things to different people.
In a Rolling Stones interview, Don Henley said, "We were all middle-class kids from the Midwest. 'Hotel California' was our interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles."
He's not stupid to say this song is about dying and going to hell ,some would freak out and not buy the album anymore, is like led zeppelin's stairway to heaven, heaven is just a metaphor for hell in the song.
Some of us were around then and appreciate younger fans enjoying the music we grew up with. In fact March 21st 1977 I was one week from gradution of Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island.

Semper Fi Mac.....back from Vietnam summer of '71 and separated Sept 72. Now 5 yrs as a police officer, riding the 11 to 7 shift talking to the police groupies between calls and listening to the likes of the Eagles, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and more.......

Don Felder and Joe Walsh delivered some of the best guitar work you'll ever hear in this performance. Gives me chills every time I hear it, even after all these years.
I was 5 when this was recorded. This song has been in my life... my whole life. I have no idea how many times I've heard it since the '70's, but to this day I never have gotten tired of it and if I'm driving and get to my destination but this comes on my playlist... I stay in the car and wait for it to finish! It's just one of those classic songs most all humanity can enjoy... the music just hits something inside your soul we all share. somehow, they tapped into something spiritual.
I've been listening to music for 50 years and this is my "All time favorite song". That guitar riff with Don Felder and Joe Walsh at the end has no rivals from today's music. RIP Glenn Frey.
That is my favorite guitar riff. But Jimmy Paige stairway to heaven runs a close 2nd. But nothing tops Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner performance at Woodstock
The Eagles have been contradictory in their explanation of what the song is about. It is about excess specifically Alcohol and drugs. “ Mirrors on the ceiling, the Pink Champagne on Ice” is a direct reference to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California. it’s one of the strangest Hotels in the world. “I had to find my way back to the place I was before.” That’s a direct reference to the Winchester Mystery House outside Santa Barbara. I’m sure about the previous. When they refer to the “Night Watchman” I think is a reference to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Lastly, what the song is about is Napa State Hospital in Napa, California. It is notorious for having Criminally Insane people. “You can check in anytime you like but you can never leave.” All these places are in the same general places along the 101,and 1 in California. The Eagles one time did disclose Napa State Hospital, but this is obviously a trip they took in California and seeing some infamous places.
Don Henley, is an amazing vocalist, and one of a rare class of musicians who (Phil Collins is another) who are singers and drummers. The idea behind the song is a commentary on the excesses of California lifestyles in the 60's and 70's and the loss of the idealism of the hippie movement. It speaks about drugs and addiction, "You can check out (get high) but you can never leave" it's also about how seductive these things are while being dangerous. Also "Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air" is a weed reference. As in he was smoking while driving then came upon the hotel where he meets these strange people and these strange things happen to him. People have interpreted the lyrics to imply that the narrator dies while driving and that the hotel is like purgatory a place between heaven and hell. From everything I've read, the Eagles themselves, have stayed intentionally cryptic on the meaning as they seem to enjoy the debate. But the fact that the song is about excessive lifestyles and drug use is true. If you like Don Henley (Singer and drummer) You'd likely love his songs "Boys of summer" and "Dirty Laundry" Nice reaction guys.
"You can check out anytime you like. But you can never leave" 'Nuff said? It's Hell. That lyric was foreshadowing. Pop culture in California in 70's or now.
Add 9:38 mark, when Walsh is really feeling it my boy says, "you know he is really feeling it!" The comments about Henley drumming and singing also. The girl has a great ear for music.

One of the greatest songs ever written. This song is the epitome of poetic metaphor, it means everything you think it means, while meaning something totally different to someone else. There's no one definition. There's no right or wrong answer. Simply put, where this song takes you, that's what it means.
this song means a lot of different things to different people. you guys did a great job analyzing this song for yourselves. you may find that the meaning deepens and changes as you age. your perspective will deepen and change.
I grew up with this music. It's great seeing young people like you enjoying it so much. Pure musical talent and perfection on display as was always the case with The Eagles. What is this song about? My interpretation is that it is about the hedonism and moral swamp that was the California (the Hotel) that they experienced in the glitzy world of the rich and famous. But it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It wasn't healthy, it wasn't good, so ... "Next thing I remember, I was running for the door. I tried to find a passage back to the place I was before". The whole scene in that morally bankrupt and hedonistic world leaves a mark on you forever. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." No, you don't forget the damage you did to yourself, that you did to others, and that others did to you. And that is why you can leave that scene, but it sticks with you forever. Again, I enjoyed watching you two enjoy this incredible music by the best of the best. Big thumbs up!
You guys are very young but I like your reactions. It's good to see checking out songs and stuff that I grew up with and were around long before you were born!
A time period not explainable with words. This was filmed at the end of my junior year in high school. I would turn 17 in June. Growing up during the 70's I now realize was very special.
This song was sampled with a reggae drop - Bob Marley had a rendition of this song as well (nice). I felt old with your comment that your Dad wasn't even born in 1977! I was 8 years old in '77 and when I started appreciating all of these songs - great times!
Man this band is the shit. You literally can just pick a song off any album and its a great song. Played this song in many of smokey bars for alot of years! Down the eagles rabbit hole!
Not Jamaican, they were going for a Spanish sound, specially on the guitars. This song is full of double meanings, the band says the song is about "Excess" some say it's about the devil. I just say "Hotel California" is one of the best songs ever!
Good to see younger folks checking out this music that I grew up listening to. Keep in mind that this is live with nothing but raw talent to carry you through. I love this whole concert and one of my favorite tunes is "New kid in town".
@@blowba Some of those older groups are known to have impeccable live renditions of their studio recordings, and the eagles are one of them. They're in perfect sync and I can't detect any sign of this not being genuine, after some expert mixing and mastering. IDK
I saw this on TV on some special. I was14 at the time. Had the album. Now I have it on my ipod and listen to it driving my semi truck coast to coast. Good choice.
I appreciate you listening and attempting to interpret the lyrics. You are close. It’s about the entire bands all moving to California from different location all around the same time. During that time Cali was such a beautiful arts scene with a lot of things happening. Big city lights, famous people, drugs. It was heaven. Or was it hell? It was also a trap. With along with the flashy lifestyle comes drug addiction, lonesomeness, working to exhaustion, heartbreak, etc.
This band is notorious for many reasons, their antics out on the road are well known. They’re also known for intense fighting amongst themselves. In fact they broke up from 1979 - 1994 because of their fighting.
Wow! It brings a tear to my eye and gives me chills watching young people totally digging this. To me, the most important line is ‘we’re all just prisoners here... of our own device’! Any situation can be a prison (of the mind) if you let. “Please bring me my wine”
Hey guys love your reaction. I think the song is about drug addiction. Once your in you can never leave. Also the passage "when they stab it with their steely knives but they just cant kill the beast" - I can literally see how they draw lines of cocaine on a glass table with that knives.😯 But it is just one interpretation. All best from Germany PS: it is weird that the tone of this video is not the one from the original live version but from the studio Version. The live version is even better, so this is a pity.
Hotel California was a shining example of the combined songwriting prowess of the entire band. Don Felder, the guitarist on the double-neck, wrote that winding, mysterious guitar chord progression borrowing heavily from elements of flamenco and reggae, which is why it sounds Spanish and Jamaican at the same time. Don Henley (singer, drums) & Glenn Frey (acoustic 12-string guitar) wrote the lyrics, & Joe Walsh helped write that guitar duet at the end. Randy Meisner, while not the most well-known Eagle, is important because his voice can hit the high melody even while he plays bass.
Allegedly Hotel California was a nickname for a mental hospital / rehab center for Hollywood celebrities who couldn't say where they were going so they were just "vacationing at Hotel California". Metaphorically it means the dark side of fame, destructive nature of rock n' roll lifestyle. Too much money, corruption, greed, sex, drugs and arrogance; too little humility and heart. React to Boys of Summer, it was the drummer Don Henley's solo hit in 1984.
Drug addiction. Feels beautiful when you arrive, and then it takes your soul. "I had to find the passage back to the place I was before"... he's literally lost while staying in one place. The last line is heart wrenching: "You can 'check out' any time you like, but you can never leave", playing on the double meaning of checking-out.... death
I don't know if anyone has ever described I Can't Tell You Why as a banger but it is a great song! One of the few time they let Timothy B Schmit sing lead.
Thanks for that. It is the best recorded live version. The drummer had a recent interview. He said it wasn't about anything specific (drug use etc). It was about whatever your vice was sex, drugs, whatever...any vice they could provide.
Give them a break, dude. It’s not a crime to be ill-educated. I’ve seen enough of their reactions to not only find them very genuine and adorable, but more importantly to realise that they’re genuinely open to any and all cultural influences, not matter from where they come. I’d rather spend time with a lovely young couple like this - open and accepting of the world around them - than any number of jaded ‘intellectuals’ who try to gatekeep what people should think or what they should like/dislike. It's just a joy to see them finding enjoyment in things.
You know when your grandfather music is cooler than today music! When you have the newer generation dancing and singing! : ) to the same music I grew up on!
I saw them live in 1995. If I had a bucket list at the time it would have been at the top at no time did I not watch in awe of one of the greatest bands of all time put on an unbelievable show.
Saw them live in 2009 at a soccer stadium in Salt Lake City Utah and they played this. It was truly epic and a memory that I will cherish as long as I can. I have heard this song interpreted in so many different ways. From what I saw in a documentary about them or it was on the night they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, someone said this song was about the music lifestyle and scene back then. A lot of drugs and women and just crazy fast living and it was just really a crazy scene. But I think it can mean whatever you want for you and you life experience. That is one of the amazing things about music, it can be personal and at the same time universal. Much love from out in Phoenix, AZ Dean Bros, keep up the good work!
The guitarist in the red bandanna is the one and only Joe Walsh. He played in the James Gang before joining the Eagles and went on to have a successful solo career before rejoining the Eagles later. He was originally considered to be in the Eagles from the start but was thought to be to wild and crazy to deal with.
when you said Jamaican I was like HUH? and then I was like oh shit she's right, now I cant unhear it , this is why I love watching reactions a getting other peoples takes,, great job guys.
It's about California the place. The Hotel is just a metaphor. If you've ever lived in California you'll know what the song is about. It's about the seductive lure of the place and how it sucks you in and always stays in your mind even after you leave. I lived there (in LA) for 30 years starting in '73 and it was like a fantasy. It was real in some ways but in others it was like a dream. I guess it helps to have lived there to truly understand what this song is about.
In case you didn't know, there is more than one lead singer in this band. Don Henley the drummer sings on this one but the other singers are Glenn Frey guitarist (may he rest in peace) , , Randy Meisner bassist, Timothy Schmidt bassist for The Eagles and Poco (Tim replaced Randy). Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh... all 3 also had solo careers. Going to an Eagles concert is 3 hours of music with NO other bands like other concerts because they have a huge catalog and they also play their solo song hits.
Hotel California is a commentary on the dark, wild and shallow lifestyle of California’s celebrity scene. Glitz and glamor. Constant parties. Drugs and alcohol. Insincere friends. Etc. Easy to get drawn in. But hard to get back out.
Decadance, innocence, love and loss. America.

The song is a metaphor for the Hollywood entertainment industry.
It's only gotten worse. Liberals ruin everything.
HC is so beautiful that even my piano cover sounds good, congrats to the channel for choosing it!!! 👍😉
You should react to “Life in the Fast Lane”
You guys are very young but I like your reactions. It's good to see checking out songs and stuff that I grew up with and were around long before you were born!
This version of the song are truly amazing💕
A time period
not explainable with words. This was filmed at the end of my junior year in high school. I would turn 17 in June. Growing up during the 70's I now realize was very special.
Straight up fire, straight up classic!
They sound so good in concert. I was fortunate to have seen them a couple times over the years.
Gotta love me some Eagles.
You should check out another one of theirs "Life In The Fast Lane" 👍🥁🎸
This song was sampled with a reggae drop - Bob Marley had a rendition of this song as well (nice). I felt old with your comment that your Dad wasn't even born in 1977! I was 8 years old in '77 and when I started appreciating all of these songs - great times!
Levon Helm was a drummer singer that you should see.
The Band +The Staples - The Weight.
Check out the hell freezes over version of it. You'll hear the Spanish influence
Good to see younger folks checking out this music that I grew up listening to. Keep in mind that this is live with nothing but raw talent to carry you through. I love this whole concert and one of my favorite tunes is "New kid in town".
This is the album version that somebody synced up to some live footage.
How do you know this. Looks authentic too me. And why do you find it necessary to try and diminish this performance?
@@mar10rod38 If you asked somebody for some M&M's, and they handed you all green ones, youd bitch about that too, huh?
@@mar10rod38 because it sounds exactly like the album version and I'm not diminishing anything, I'm simply stating facts.
The song is about the California Lifestyle from back then in the 70s.
Or heroin injection with a needle, possibly.
It's always so amazing to see newer generations hearing and falling in love with the songs I grew up listening to. So many great memories ❤
Listen to Henley sing “Desperado”......His voice is great in that song
Sometimes we all have a little too much vice in the life.
I saw the Eagles sing the entire album last month in Phoenix and they still have their chops. Brilliant🦅
The last line is heart wrenching: "You can 'check out' any time you like, but you can never leave", playing on the double meaning of checking-out.... death
From the same live show check out "Take it to the Limit"
The anticipation of the guitar solo is killing me. I can't wait to see them light up.
Another Eagles banger is I Can't Tell You Why. The studio version is straight fire 🔥🔥🔥
A favourite of mine but i got to prefer the live version of ICTYW
I don't know if anyone has ever described I Can't Tell You Why as a banger but it is a great song! One of the few time they let Timothy B Schmit sing lead.
Don Felder, the guy with the white double neck Gibson, wrote pretty much all the music for this. Such an underrated and talented musician.
Doobie Brothers
Minute by Minute
♡♡♡
Thanks for that. It is the best recorded live version. The drummer had a recent interview. He said it wasn't about anything specific (drug use etc). It was about whatever your vice was sex, drugs, whatever...any vice they could provide.
Moment they started talking during the solo, I was done
T
his was everybody's favorite song back in77. it was me and my wife's farorite too, and we are still rocking to it in 2021.
San Francisco is in California?!... the ignorance of this channel baffles me sometimes
@Jeronomp Yes. That was part of the point.
You know when your grandfather music is cooler than today music! When you have the newer generation dancing and singing! : ) to the same music I grew up on!
The song is about high society life in California - Hotel California is just a symbol
So awesome to see you (and others) "discover" some of the greatest music ever !
The guitarist in the red bandanna is the one and only Joe Walsh. He played in the James Gang before joining the Eagles and went on to have a successful solo career before rejoining the Eagles later. He was originally considered to be in the Eagles from the start but was thought to be to wild and crazy to deal with.
I like to think that hotel california is a place in our soul that we all have inside
when you said Jamaican I was like HUH? and then I was like oh shit she's right, now I cant unhear it , this is why I love watching reactions a getting other peoples takes,, great job guys.
I went to the Eagles Hotel California concert in November of 1976 whenever I was 15
It's about California the place.
Their Hell Freezes Over Concert was the best version of Hotel California I've heard from them
In case you didn't know, there is more than one lead singer in this band.
