The intro was their tribute to Cliff Burton who passed 3 yrs ago that time..
And it's a fragment of their instrumental TO LIVE IS TO DIE

Hi Empress. Metallica in 1989 were : Lars Ulrich - drums / James Hetfield - vocals & guitar / Kirk Hammett - guitar / Jason Newstead - bass ( original Bassist Cliff Burton died in a bus crash. Jason in turn has now been replaced by Rob Trujillo)

I am particularly impressed that you seem to really enjoy the Heavy side of Metal as most newcomers really struggle.
Some Heavy bands you might like to try out for size are : Pantera/ Slipknot/ Megadeth/ Slayer/ Anthrax/ Jinjer/ Gojira/ Tool/ Lorna Shore/ Lamb of God.
That should give you plenty of options. I will be content with whatever you choose as long as you continue to enjoy it as whole heartedly.

I really like how black people describe rock and metal musicians. Empress said Lars was playing drums like his life depended on it. That's awesome. I watched this other reaction video and it was a black dude. It was Mr. Crowley by Ozzy and the guy goes, "He was playing that guitar like it owed him money". Great reactions, y'all. I'm lovin' it.
💯 Really! In what other genre do you see that? Punk, maybe. But metal takes it to a whole, other, more precise level.
“I love the drummer” my thoughts when I first heard them
The world of heavy metal we grew up in decreed Metallica as one of the big major 'thrash' bands; next to the likes of Slayer and Anthrax and (as an offshoot) Megadeth. Energy and the riff and hyper-criticism was where it stood at; partially inspired by punk, the second wave of British heavy metal and a desire to be iconoclastic in an era of increasingly bland 'hair metal'.
They are the biggest metal band to ever walk this planet
I didn't realize till many years later the real message of this amazing song. All I knew was it Rocked, it was long and it was completely METAL. But watching people react to the song with the Lyrics... I learned just how epic this song really was/is. It goes from drug use then through the pains of full addiction, all the way through to the end to the Real Master behind the drugs.. Death. Amazing that 17-18 year old kids thought up this song and put it into such a musical Metal ride. It got me going back through their songs with lyrics and finding out that these guys are truly amazing artists and the songs i enjoyed over the years were masterpieces. "Better late than never" i Get it now in a completely different way!

I love how much you enjoy this music!
They are phenomenally talented, and filled stadiums with barely any radio play back in the 80s. People call them Thrash, but I differentiate it as Speedmetal...take one look at the musical notation for this song in particular and you'll understand...there is a lot of precision in their playing, whereas Thrash is messy like punk, as is intended. This isn't my favorite song of theirs (that's "Creeping Death", from the previous album), but in the top 5. SO damn cool live, too, headbangers for sure.

Say what you want about Lars his enthusiasm and passion is unmatched. There’s a reason they kept him around for 41 years. He is my favorite tiny cheesy brooding danish. could be worse ..he could be Axl Rose. I’m glad he’s OK now, but Lord have mercy the boy was a mess!

You're not paying attention to how insanely good they can play an actual instrument. Blindly. Yeah Lars fks it up almost every show. But these guys are tight and compensate without most noticing. Metallica is the gr3atest. And holds more world records than most, and if I may stress, than any?!
Man, I would have listened to the album version with Cliff playing on it ... not a live version with Jason ..... dude. It's a masterpiece ... you don't listen to a masterpiece through a wall.

Hey darling time for Megadeth Holy Wars/ The Punishment Due .Their founder Dave Mustaine was an original member of Metallic a til he was replaced.Leading to him forming Megadeth. Thank God for that.
