  • Investigators are looking into whether Maine shooting suspect Robert Card was targeting a specific person, believed to be a current or former girlfriend, two U.S. officials and a former high-ranking official told CBS News. Card is suspected of killing 18 people and injuring 13 in shootings at multiple Lewiston, Maine, locations Wednesday night. Police are still searching for Card. CBS News Jericka Duncan and Jeff Pegues have more.

The evidence against him is convincing, but investigators shouldn't jump to conclusions. This might be a situation similar to that of Harrison Ford's character in The Fugitive. Legislators need to consider revising gun laws, mandating mental health treatment, and placing strictures on promiscuous women.

It's pretty frustrating to continue hearing it reported that he was at a mental institution for "ONLY" two weeks. I worked at a psychiatric hospital for several years, on the highest acuity unit (so the sort of unit that treated people like the shooter, people who were actively psychotic, homicidal, etc). 2 weeks is around the longest that most people are approved to be kept in hospitals, the longest stay I've ever seen was 6 weeks and that's because the patient's family kept paying past when his insurance stopped. The shooter was in a military hospital and so the military would have set a limit on how long he stayed as they paid for it. 2 weeks means the hospital probably kept him as long as they were allowed to. If we're only addressing the mental health care side of this (and there is absolutely the side of the total lack of gun regulations because a psych stay doesn't disqualify you from gun ownership in most states), we need long-term institutions that aren't just for wealthy people whose families can afford tens of thousands of dollars a month. Unless there is evidence that the hospital was negligent per our current laws and policies, don't accuse them of negligence. Change the system.

I don't claim to know the way mental institutions (and their laws) work in Maine, but it clearly failed the public if it held this guy for only 2 weeks when he got out and killed 18 people just a few months later. Everyone is shocked to hear someone like this was only there for 2 weeks because they see what happened, after. We shouldn't blame the weapon or ban more citizens from owning firearms just because one mentally-ill person used that tool effectively. I'd bet 18 people and many loved ones wish they had that tool to defend themselves when they needed it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's heavily-restricted in Maine and/or that bowling alley.

Man/coward attorney defending him says that it’s against Constitution for him not to buy a gun. Stats show that women are likely to die when their significant other has access to gun ownership and has a history of domestic violence in the past. It doesn't sound like they did anything wrong. In Maine only the police have the authority to take away firearms. 2 weeks is actually a pretty long stay at a psychiatric hospital (I worked at one for several years). Odds are, they didn't want to release him, wanted restrictions on him, but had no authority to make those things happen.
