One of the reasons mental health issues are so stigmatized, and largely ignored are comments like this. We need to recognize, and validate mental illness as a nation if we want to begin to get ahead of tragedies like these. Assuming that his issues were fake, and that he simply did all this for no reason that we can understand invalidates the struggle that people go through, and discourages people from seeking help because they won't be believed. Educate yourself on mental health, and recognize that people are hurting. Simply listening to someone who is struggling can go a long way. Assuming it was a lie without any evidence causes more harm than good. Be kind whenever possible, and recognize that everyone is different. Everyone has struggles, and sometimes, tragically, they externalize those struggles and something like this happens. What he did was monstrous, and unforgivable, but a good hard look needs to be taken on how he was allowed access to these weapons when the state certainly knew, or should have been aware of his mental state. The state failed all those people as much as they failed to recognize the danger the shooter posed due to his mental illness.

If we ignore all of the red flags and stick our heads in the sand because it's easier to call him a monster and end the conversation, we won't get any closer to preventing mass shootings. The act itself is wrong. I don't think anyone is disputing that. But if we don't even bother trying to understand what led him to this point we may as well just give up, and accept mass murder as an unavoidable part of our culture. Thoughts and prayers haven't done a single thing other than make the thinkers and prayers feel like they've done something. All acts of violence need to be understood if we are ever going to find a solution.

As a Mainer, it’s so weird seeing all of this coverage from national media. Nobody truly understands or cares to try and understand the sense of community we Mainers have. So much judgment from outsiders, which I guess is warranted due to how Robert card violated us and made national news. It’s just frustrating to hear and see so many judgmental comments and opinions regarding this incredibly personal tragedy from people who are just looking at this as “another mass shooting.” This doesn’t happen here. This has NEVER happened here. Nothing bad ever happens here. We truly are a big little town here in Maine.
Also the ASL interpreter worked with one of the victims, Josh Seal. He was the primary ASL interpreter for all of the covid-related briefings from Maine public health officials during the pandemic. Perhaps this interpreter was overly expressive because one of her colleagues died (while he was attending a bowling event with deaf children at spare time) as a result of the massacre….

I understand this is very personal to you and we greive the loss for you, however to play devils advocate, the US public seems to becoming desensitized to the subject since it happens so often in the US. Maine is still part of the US, even if it were the safest place to live. We hope the people of Maine recover from this tragedy and the government actually does something about these domestic terrorist sooner than later. We are tired of hearing about mass shootings and clearly nothing is being done to curb this trend.

Where were the cops while this maniac was rampaging through downtown? Where were those “good cops” i keep hearing about?

This episode is ended, but this solves nothing. This guy was reportedly 'hearing voices', a classic indication of schizophrenia -- a clinical, psychotic disorder. He had been involuntarily admitted to a mental health facility for observation, yet he was released and no effort was made to confiscate his firearms. It seems a schizophrenic was allowed to have an AR-15.
This episode is over (though not for the friends and families of the victims), but nothing has changed. Where and when will the next mass tragedy take place?
It only highlights that the mental health system in the US is not effective in actually dealing with cases like this.
We are too soft and too trusting of the mentally ill that they won't become a threat.

From what I heard, Robert Card was a recent mental patient (hearing voices) recently released from an hospital stay. Rest assured, Robert Card's family/friends are also deeply grieving. Just saying. Hey, doctors are MANDATED REPORTERS so, in my book, they should of made sure that authorities secured Robert's g*ns PRIOR to his release. I confiscated my elderly father's guns when I saw the need; and I properly disposed of them. Yes, Robert did it so he failed; but, sadly, others failed Robert too😞
I'm very glad there's a sign language expert there but she needs to be positioned in another place - it was extremely distracting and her hands were often going in front of speaker faces. She was the most expressive sign language translator I have ever seen. It was like someone yelling their speech. Appreciate what she does, just tone it down or move over a bit.

We owe our veterans more and it’s such a loss of lives that could have been saved if he had gotten the help he so needed. All who died are grieved this day. The first and most difficult one is the man who cried out to all the agencies and government people who ignored his plain-spoken cries for help that went ignored. The first loss was when the cries for help went unanswered, and the unfortunate reaction the man had to it. The rest of the dead and injured were collateral damage to the abandonment of this sick individual who found out the people and agencies responsible for bringing this man the message that he was alone in his insanity and they were not going to stop him, even though he asked them to help. Boo to the people in positions to help for ignoring the plea and being partially responsible for the deaths that the man caused. YOU FAILED A SICK MAN, i hope you never sleep without seeing those people in your dreamless sleep. What the shooter did was madness, when his pleas wereignored and he descended into madness his nation was abandoning him.

Why do we have someone doing sign language. Its distracting and annoying. Deaf people can read closed captions. My daughter is deaf, and agrees with me.
My condolences to all the families who lost a loved one, if there is not a change in the laws so that it is not so easy to acquire weapons and even less rifles that can cause so much damage when in the wrong hands, we will continue praying and hoping that it does not happen again.😢
