As a freelance graphic designer, I’ve gotten lots of questions online about my design portfolio and just online portfolios in general. So in this video, I am going to be walking you through some of my design projects, the thinking that went into them, and how they are presented on my site, as well as update some new projects and give you all some overall tips on setting up your portfolios the best way possible.

I'm trying to build a portfolio and I'm clueless. It seems like an impossible task with no work experience and no money for a fancy website.
Stop making excuses for yourself
What do you mean no work experience? You don't need a job to start practicing graphic design and start doing projects on your own. You also don't need to spend a bunch of money on a website. There are literally free websites. That kind of mindset is what's holding you back, not money or lack of experience
It’s just as hard with a dope portfolio 😂😂 I have a problem doing stuff for myself. I always push it off to do stuff for others cause it pays more than chasing dreams 😅
To me Editing for a living was the dream, and I do that but can’t lie and say I wish I did more of my own ideas.
@@justadrumfor someone who is struggling the same, i approve. I’ve always tried practicing doing a reasonless logo or poster. But i cant, it needs to have a purpose for creating one. Making it for a portfolio is not a good enough reason for my brain to accept it seems 😂
@@ccaamille_ Haha yeah it’s tough. Not saying let it stop you either way..I’ve developed my Photoshop and After Effects skills by watching UA-cam clips but it helps to have a professional VFX artist friend or two I can call for help.,

What would you recommend if you have no clients or design experience? I went to art school but not for graphic design and I’m working on making my portfolio to get a junior graphic design job preferably in a design studio.

You could make fake projects to showcase your skills. There are alot of sites where you can get random promts
Literally same.
Volunteer to make stuff for your friends or relatives businesses, make mock ups, ask your local non profit orgs if they need help. I did it for free and managed to attract clients as a freelancer.
make a example of a fake flyer with the designs you have
My portfolio tips was with my graphic design choice and writing passage and stories / brand passage

Most useful indeed! I would like to hear mora about prepping files for portfolios. Best File formats? How you create your ~2MB files for upload
I usually upload jpegs or png and you can reduce the file size when exporting in photohsop

How do you create a portfolio if you have not done any projects yet?
You need a portfolio to be able to do projects,so just try different concepts or make a made up campaign or product /project to show case your abilities and skills
People give different advices on portfolio different ways that we beginners do not know which one to believe.

1. Amazing work and portfolio advice. I've recently begun restructuring my Pf & this is helping me to be more concise.
2. That frame in the background - Is that a thumbnail sheet where you do 50+ variations of an object /concept?!
If so, I specifically remember & DREADED doing those projects in college😅
So you mentioned that instagram and twitter "portfolios" aren't as good because you're renting space. Which I agree with. But are you not also renting space with Adobe portfolio?

If anyone can help me, it’d be much appreciated…I’m a student trying to come up with my portfolio right now, but I’ve never done anything with graphic design outside of two or three things I’ve done in class. We’re supposed to start one for this project and I have no idea what to do.

What's the name of that portfolio
I believe its "Sawdust". Thats what I am using and it looks very similar to Jesse's layout on Adobe Portfolio. Hope this helps!
