Robo: buying toys so we don't have to! Excellent review. I too had seen some early pictures that made me skeptical. Unfortunately Bandai is becoming a little hit and miss lately. We aren't getting the sure fire home runs like we got with Luke, Maul and Mace.

Those were in the last 5 years. I'm saying lately it's more often that a figure will have issues that make them feel not worth their price than not at all. Especially with Hasbro's excellent offerings at 1/4 the price

I usually always get the s.h figuarts version when it comes to starwars, but this one I am happy to skip. Way to high of a price for two statues and a articulated satue with a chair. Plus if it lowered down the price some i don't think the guards where necessary to include in the set. I think tamashii should've made two separate versions of this figure, a regular release that was more affordable and came with the basics and a dx version which would essentially be this release.
Yeah between this, dooku, boba fett and mando, figuarts has actually been dropping the ball quite alot. Its making me hold off on preorders and waiting for reviews first.

@@Taffer-King i don't think all of them that have been released recently are all bad. I do agree dooku was a trainwreak of a release, like having the wrong colors a bad cape and a out dated mold. But recent figures like Yoda, rotj Vader 2.0, stormtrooper 2.0, old han, crait Luke, sith trooper, rise of Skywalker Rey and kylo were all pretty good imo. And even though I wish boba came with more things I still think he is a pretty sold figure even with the clean look which doesn't bother me. Same for mando, I hate the rifle and belt engineering but I still think it a pretty sold figure. I'm still pretty hype for beskar mando and ig.

This was supposed to be a casual review for me because I'm never gonna get this set. But seeing that comparison at 13:33, I suddenly feel the urge to get it. Damn do they look good together! That Luke still looks great after all these years!
You can also make the black series emperor into an episode 9 emperor. All there is to it is a red inner robe and instead of the outer robe being attached below the hood, its attached around the waist.
I finally broke down and purchase 2 Beef Boss (Mayor McCheese) figures. You wore me down. Thanks! Looking forward to just laughing everytime I look at that figure and hearing your voice over.
I got mine Friday. Looks great really caps off my villains display. Agree with the hood it’s a bit annoying but doesn’t bother me too much just happy to finally have him. Hopefully there’s a 3rd party working on making just plastic hoods. That would be great
My buddy asked if I had an extra hooded figure hanging around I could steal the hood from and put with the standing Palpatine and I was like holy crap I do! I still had the spare head from the new ML Dr. Doom (I used the classic head for the shelf pose). I was able to take the Doom head out of the hood and I repainted the hood (little black and a little blue) and got it to match Palpatine's robe pretty good. The hood isn't perfect but it's not terrible, a little on the big side but maybe the classic Doom head would work better. If anyone has the ML Doom, I recommend trying it if you don't plan on using it. The texture isn't too far off from the Emperor's robe either. Just a suggestion if you have both of these figures. It essentially gives you two Palpatines :)
I was thinking about buying a Hasbro throne for the Figuarts. Someone else mentioned sitting the Black Series in the Bandai chair. I’d love to see you swap chairs and see if it’s possible!

I bought PO'd something from HLJ worth $40. It came in stock after Covid and they shut down the usual cheaper shipping. In order to ship either UPS or FedEx will cost and additional $30. I'm almost tempted to tell them to just burn the figure.
That's quite a head of hair they gave the Emperor. Interesting they went a different route with that. And yeah man, those Royal Guards are teenie weenie. They should kinda tower over the Emperor. Seeing that sculpted right hand does make me wish Hot Toys went that route with their Royal Guard. So I'll give it to them for the hands. But their short height, not having legs or anything, and them cheapening out on not including an extra .2¢ hood; that's something else. Besides all that lol...they look great.

I got 2. Happy to have it. Best set so far by Figuarts in my opinion. :) I don't see why collectors care if the Royal Guards are articulated. Why should they be? That's the problem I had with the soft goods Black Series versions. To each their own :)
Wanted this since I saw the picture last year from some convention. Just paid 40 for the Black Series once I saw the price tag on this one. Glad I did because TBS Palpatine is up over 100 buck now on the secondary market.

It’s still a cool looking set but I have the Kotobukiya Emperor on Throne and Guards set and it’s kinda, sorta the same thing as this but more detailed. The additional body is a plus but that was included with the Koto Emperor and guard set. My point is: this looks like a six inch statue set with a slightly poseable extra figure that only works when you don’t display the throne Palpy. I can’t really see how this is worth the outlay. The Hasbro set isn’t perfect by far but presents a bigger display opportunity for a smaller price. My two cents.

I was able to snag the Amazon Black Series Emperor fairly recently on eBay for a STEAL of a deal (like 35 bucks new but no throne), and I am extremely happy with it. Just having him hunched over (something this figure couldn't do well) with the royal guards flanking him looks amazing. AND unlike this pack, the royal guards don't look small or like some kind of trippy perception black magic.

I'm in the UK, and for what I ended up paying for the deluxe emperor, I wish this was available at the same time because I would have spent a little more and got two guards and a extra body for palatine, I paid £100. For the emperor from hasbro, but the import and customs charges and postage cost took the price to nearly double, I hate buying from the USA, but because hasbro doesn't have good UK distributors I don't get much choice.
Cezarion88 I got mine back in December for $30 on Amazon during a Cyber Monday deal. After hearing how high that set has gone up in price since then, I'm SO glad I took advantage of that deal and didn't wait. Sounds like 30 bucks was probably the cheapest I was ever going to get it for. I always thought $40 was a bit too pricey. 30 seemed more reasonable. Now that seems cheap compared to what it's going for now...

Yes, the novelization revealed during the final battle that Palpalpalpatine is waiting anxiously for the moment when Vader finds out Leia is his daughter! He made a bet with his pasty skinned dignitaries to see if A: Vader would be so shocked he’d immediately turn to the light side and get to know his long lost children (in which case he’d kill Vader and take on Luke as his new favorite pupil; B: Vader would sadistically make up some twisted torture threats to Luke about his sister - who would then kill him in anger and fear to protect his sister in which case Palps would proudly take Luke on as his apprentice and hopefully lure Leia in for good measure or C: He’d say that after a son he didn’t even know about - the fact a daughter ALSO exists just goes to show that Padme was sluttin’ around and Luke and/or Leia had to be Obi Wan’s progeny and in a jealous rage he’d try to kill Luke/Kenobi Jr in which case Palpy would kill Vader and tell Luke and Leia everything was a big misunderstanding and see if they’d donate some genetic material to fashion a new body for Palpy to inhabit. Like an incestuous grandchild, but a ray of hope for a strong body. Mwhahahaha! No matter the outcome, it wasnt looking good for the Dark Father to make it out of there alive, and Palpy had $50 and a pack of Little Debbie Snackcakes riding on the outcome, thus his leaning ever forward in his chair to see who would win. So the figure is ACCURATE! (And for the record, Shiv baby was betting on option C just because he’s scum like that and he was always jealous that Vader had not only had a girlfriend, but a hot one at that, while he had to settle for taking care of business by… his own hand and donating the proceeds to his Sith servants to experiment with - a less than dignified exchange of raw materials. Note: It is possible the above story has been relegated to Legends/Non-Canonical status.

So true! I wish the BS one had a better cane, but it's honestly superior in just about every other way. Maybe the Figuarts force lightning is better too, actually. In any case, I have my Palpatine borrowing Darth Revan's red saber and battling Figuarts Yoda, so I'm not too bothered by the unused cane.
For $200 how do they not provide you with an additional hood? Especially with how tight the hood gets wedged into underneath that lip on the throne? If you're a collector who likes to change your display frequently you'll be worried about shiny contact rubbing on the hood.
Good looking Emperor but I will stick with my Artfx Kotobukiya figure. I don't need the Emperor doing more that just sitting there being evil so it is perfect and sooooo good :)

Agree with some posts, they coulda added an extra pair of non-sitting legs for the price... as Emperor is out of the chair you could use it for falling down shaft Emperor!
Thanks for looking at this Robo, but even before you did this video this figure was the easiest pass ever. I saw it on BBTS a couple of months back and said to myself "You want HOW MUCH? For like ONE actual action figure, effectively? Yeah, I'm gonna haveta ask you to go do something anatomically ill-advised with it, buddy." Perfectly happy with my BS figure, thanks. Which is ironic, since the SH Figuarts version is the totally BS one.
Great review, if I was ever to get this set I'd probably just find the artfx statue version. Both will do the same thing just sit there. Robot chicken must use the Hasbro version lol
Cool looking set but maybe $25-$40 overpriced (@ $200 price point) imo. Passed on it but after watching the review maybe shouldda picked it up. The clear electric-like effects attached to the alternate hands are a disappointment though and appear different than were shown with the prototype displayed at various shows which were more of a cloudy white color and better looking imo. The SWBS Emperor Throne set comparable effects that are a light blue color look much better too imo. Also the 2nd Hood for the Emperor standing body that is MIA with this set is just flat out cheap by SHF and pretty much unforgiveable considering the price of this issue imo. Thanks much for the detail review.
This is a great display piece, but I wish that they had included two hoods since they basically included two figures. I'm curious if someone with a 3-D printer could scan the hood, and print up copies of it... I'd pay for one!
Damn despite all the flaws this is still an awesome set. Wish I would have pre ordered. Hopefully one day I can snag this for a decent price. But knowing previous Bandai Star Wars exclusives.... hahaha
i was really think before watch you out box... must be 4 figures 2 emperors with hood,,,and 2 crimson guards articulated...but all of them are almost statues,,,, ..i must say i am really happy with my black series...but of course the qualitity of the face of emperor figuarts are really good !! and i watch the return of jedi,,,and its true ,,, the throne has a dark silver color...in black series hasbro dont use this detail.... i wished to watch te emperor black series seat in the throne of figuarts... and viceverse.....of course i am great fan of yours out da box...regards!!
That is a nice throne with the sitting Palpatine. The under size guards is a little disappointing. The lack of a second hood is very disappointing. I would like to have this set but not for $200.00. One of the reasons I stopped buying S.H. Figuarts is due to cost. And the black series face tech has gotten a whole lot better.
I like it, but I still get the sense that there's a touch too much hair on top. It makes the hood stand too tall and wide. It doesn't look right, whereas the emperor's hood was basically stuck to his face in ROTJ
What’s wrong with the Black Series one? It came with a fair amount of accessories, plus an upgrade over the previous version. And was 1/5 the price of SHF’s.
Reyking Why...? I mean, I know some people hate soft goods and might not like the aesthetic of that figure. But otherwise, what's wrong with it? It looks pretty damn good and does exactly what you need it to do....for only a fraction of the cost for this set.
I bet there's some legal technicality behind there only being one hood, like if they have included a second it would be two figures and they'd have to pay Lucasfilm an additional licensing fee.
I'm perfectly satisfied with my original black series Palpatine and 3d printed throne, the black series Amazon Palpatine and throne set pissed me off anyway because just like Jedi knight luke as soon as I payed $70 plus a piece for those 2 not including throne, custom robes and accessories 2.0 versions were announced within weeks that come with everything for half the price! the royal guards can bugger off too since they go on a snoke break anyway! Ha... smoke break, I'm not fixing that autocorrect!
For what they charge this could've easily be a two deal with ROTJ and ROTS just by adding a little bit of extras.
Looks good, but I'll stick with my Black Series ones for budget reasons.
IMO its WAAY better than the figuarts, on price alone and the cloth robe looks way more natural than the traffic cone

This is more of a statue set than an action figure set, like an upgraded Kotobukiya set
the kotobukiya has painted non waxy looking hands and a much better sculpt and paint.

The throne may or may not be accurate but I like it in silver it make Sidious pop out a bit more.

Why does the Bandai Royal Guards look like the KO Royal Guards that i saw a few years back?
I'm in the UK, and for what I ended up paying for the deluxe emperor, I wish this was available at the same time because I would have spent a little more and got two guards and a extra body for palatine, I paid £100. For the emperor from hasbro, but the import and customs charges and postage cost took the price to nearly double, I hate buying from the USA, but because hasbro doesn't have good UK distributors I don't get much choice.
Super presence! The head is fantastic. Missed the laughing head.
The accurate height to royal gaurds with articulation then price was justified.
Glad that I got BS version with throne for 40$ in may on amazon. That was like last call for this price :D
Cezarion88 I got mine back in December for $30 on Amazon during a Cyber Monday deal. After hearing how high that set has gone up in price since then, I'm SO glad I took advantage of that deal and didn't wait. Sounds like 30 bucks was probably the cheapest I was ever going to get it for. I always thought $40 was a bit too pricey. 30 seemed more reasonable. Now that seems cheap compared to what it's going for now...

No matter the outcome, it wasnt looking good for the Dark Father to make it out of there alive, and Palpy had $50 and a pack of Little Debbie Snackcakes riding on the outcome, thus his leaning ever forward in his chair to see who would win. So the figure is ACCURATE! (And for the record, Shiv baby was betting on option C just because he’s scum like that and he was always jealous that Vader had not only had a girlfriend, but a hot one at that, while he had to settle for taking care of business by… his own hand and donating the proceeds to his Sith servants to experiment with - a less than dignified exchange of raw materials.

its like 35 USD for each of the guards and I'm valuing the throne at 50 which I think is much, no way man, but thanks for taking the hit and reviewing, as always thanks for the video

I gotta say the best thing that comes out of this figure is the proper cane length lol.
So true! I wish the BS one had a better cane, but it's honestly superior in just about every other way. Maybe the Figuarts force lightning is better too, actually. In any case, I have my Palpatine borrowing Darth Revan's red saber and battling Figuarts Yoda, so I'm not too bothered by the unused cane.
For $200 how do they not provide you with an additional hood? Especially with how tight the hood gets wedged into underneath that lip on the throne?
If you're a collector who likes to change your display frequently you'll be worried about shiny contact rubbing on the hood.
Good looking Emperor but I will stick with my Artfx Kotobukiya figure. I don't need the Emperor doing more that just sitting there being evil so it is perfect and sooooo good :)

Agree with some posts, they coulda added an extra pair of non-sitting legs for the price... as Emperor is out of the chair you could use it for falling down shaft Emperor!

Thanks for looking at this Robo, but even before you did this video this figure was the easiest pass ever. I saw it on BBTS a couple of months back and said to myself "You want HOW MUCH? For like ONE actual action figure, effectively? Yeah, I'm gonna haveta ask you to go do something anatomically ill-advised with it, buddy." Perfectly happy with my BS figure, thanks. Which is ironic, since the SH Figuarts version is the totally BS one.
Could maybe use a hood from a kylo ren model kit if you have an extra. Not sure how it would look though.

Great review, if I was ever to get this set I'd probably just find the artfx statue version. Both will do the same thing just sit there. Robot chicken must use the Hasbro version lol

Damn, sad news about the hood. Was hoping to split the costs with someone that wanted the seating one.
Cool looking set but maybe $25-$40 overpriced (@ $200 price point) imo. Passed on it but after watching the review maybe shouldda picked it up. The clear electric-like effects attached to the alternate hands are a disappointment though and appear different than were shown with the prototype displayed at various shows which were more of a cloudy white color and better looking imo. The SWBS Emperor Throne set comparable effects that are a light blue color look much better too imo. Also the 2nd Hood for the Emperor standing body that is MIA with this set is just flat out cheap by SHF and pretty much unforgiveable considering the price of this issue imo. This is a great display piece, but I wish that they had included two hoods since they basically included two figures. I'm curious if someone with a 3-D printer could scan the hood, and print up copies of it... I'd pay for one!
Damn despite all the flaws this is still an awesome set. Wish I would have pre ordered. Hopefully one day I can snag this for a decent price. But knowing previous Bandai Star Wars exclusives.... hahaha
i was really think before watch you out box... must be 4 figures 2 emperors with hood,,,and 2 crimson guards articulated...but all of them are almost statues,,,, ..i must say i am really happy with my black series...but of course the qualitity of the face of emperor figuarts are really good !! and i watch the return of jedi,,,and its true ,,, the throne has a dark silver color...in black series hasbro dont use this detail.... i wished to watch te emperor black series seat in the throne of figuarts... and viceverse.....of course i am great fan of yours out da box...regards!!

That is a nice throne with the sitting Palpatine. The under size guards is a little disappointing. The lack of a second hood is very disappointing. I would like to have this set but not for $200.00. One of the reasons I stopped buying S.H. Figuarts is due to cost. And the black series face tech has gotten a whole lot better.
Emperor sitting is great, not so sure of the rest. You're definitely right for the price another hood, please?!

To be fair, they always advertised them as having no articulation. It's the size that's offputting.

I like it, but I still get the sense that there's a touch too much hair on top. It makes the hood stand too tall and wide. It doesn't look right, whereas the emperor's hood was basically stuck to his face in ROTJ
The throne color is supposed to be silver, although I think the original was a darker shade

What’s wrong with the Black Series one? It came with a fair amount of accessories, plus an upgrade over the previous version. And was 1/5 the price of SHF’s.
Reyking Why...? I mean, I know some people hate soft goods and might not like the aesthetic of that figure. But otherwise, what's wrong with it? It looks pretty damn good and does exactly what you need it to do....for only a fraction of the cost for this set.

I bet there's some legal technicality behind there only being one hood, like if they have included a second it would be two figures and they'd have to pay Lucasfilm an additional licensing fee.
I wonder if the removable hood from old kenobi can fit that?

Anyone noticed how similar this looks to the Kotobukiya statue? Some of the folds in the inner and outer robes are identical, as are the hands.
Bandai knew as I did: if the Emperor were to have a duplicate hood, people would sell the extra figure and be a threat to profits.

I'm perfectly satisfied with my original black series Palpatine and 3d printed throne, the black series Amazon Palpatine and throne set pissed me off anyway because just like Jedi knight luke as soon as I payed $70 plus a piece for those 2 not including throne, custom robes and accessories 2.0 versions were announced within weeks that come with everything for half the price! the royal guards can bugger off too since they go on a snoke break anyway!
