The thing about Leia is her action figure changes so many times 1995-2013! Lucky Monkey Face (her worst likeness) ended in two years 1995 and 1996 before she looked really great in Slave Leia, New likeness and Hoth with Freeze Frames. Also the four 2-packs ending 1996. Then Leia Ceremony 1998 her most beautiful face! 1999-2002 less sequels but more Prequels until 2003 and on Leia got greater looks!

I remember one shopping trip to Toys R Us. I was 20 years old and pushed a nerdy autistic kid down onto his butt. He was holding an Obi Wan Kenobi figure which i swiftly ripped out of his hands.
His mom got all uppity with me for putting my hands on her 8 yr old boy. Guess she must've been really surprised when her cheek caught the back side of my hand.

The only thing good about those 'Bend 'Ems' 'figures' was the free Topps Star Wars Galaxy trading card, included inside every pack, the figures were trash. As for the 1995 'The Power Of The Steroids' line of Star Wars toys it was cool just to have them back again even if they did look very pumped.

    I loved the 90s POTF.
This was my drug as a kid.
The buffness never really bothered me that much.
To me, the 1995 Luke figure looks alot like the old Star Wars poster of Luke with his lightsaber raised high above his head. :)
I started collecting in 1997 after I saw Star Wars Special Edition in theaters.
I WISH I could've seen it in 77, but this was the next best thing.
Once I exited the theater, I was absolutely pumped.
    I was HOOKED.

  • @RansomeStoddard

So how did the 1994 marketing meeting go?
"Hey, let's bring back Star Wars figures, but let's make them ugly!"
"Yes, ugly is good, but also let's make them look like big bulky wrestlers."
"You're a genius, Roberts, a genius! But let's also give them ridiculously large weapons! Let's make Han's pistol larger than his head!"
And that's how Star Wars returned in 1995.

  • @jedipoodoo
    @jedipoodoo 5 років тому +2

Yeah they had funky proportions, but for someone like myself who missed out during the vintage line (was just a little too young, born in '82) it was exciting to finally have some figures (the bend-ems were a disappointment, sorry not sorry) and vehicles to get. In my area at the time, the two hardest figures to find were C-3PO and Princess Leia, and felt a sense of triumph when I got my mitts on them. Good memories.

The only things in that first wave that were an upgrade over the original Kenner versions were R2 and C-3PO, and possibly the Stormtrooper since his head could finally turn, as well as the ships. Of course the ships were the same ones designed by Kenner almost 20 years prior. But the new paint jobs and slight modifications were great. The Land Speeder, for example, looks 100X better than the original. But it was hard to get the new bulky figures into the ships. I defy anyone to stick the 1995 Han and Chewbacca into the cockpit of the Falcon and close the lid.

The Leia figure in this line was rather hideous.
I bought a ton of these figures at the time, as I was born during the darkest time to be a Star Wars fan and had only a few vintage ones from when I was like 1.

These figures can hardly fit into the ships! Too much muscles. Not accurate with the real characters. I do not like them.

Woah....I totally disagree with what was said about the POTF2 Chewie. It's *the* figure that got me into collecting. That's the one out of the initial figures (Leia wasn't apart of that) that stood out in being the sharpest and coolest of the bunch. The only other one I thought was awesome was Vader.

I was born in '89, so was at that ripe, perfect age to need something to latch onto right when the og Trilogy was released as a set on VHS and this toy series released. I lapped up as MUCH as I could lol. I actually just found my Boba Fett PotF figure last week. He's missing his Wookie skins, though :( hahaha

Mine didn't even have a spot for Star Wars figures when the last movie was released. Though, I did get a nice Robby the Robot and Godzilla there around that time. It's telling when characters from 65 year old movies and the third Jumanji are considered a safer choice for retailers than Star Wars.

Common mistake made when talking about 80's Star Wars figures stopping production. Kenner was on board to making TONS MORE but Lucas himself pulled the plug to give Star Wars a rest to do other things. Remember, the license with Kenner didn't really make him much money at all. He only got like $10 thouand a year guaranteed plus 5 cents for every $100 Kenner sold

I was obsessed with this line when it first came out.... fast forward to now and you can't sell any of these for more than ten bucks a piece because they are super common. even the annoying variants with the lightsabers, the full circle/half circle on boba fetts hands,The dots on leias belt etc etc.

Love the power of the force era, toy shops packed with figures, I was 8 at the time, so seeing all those toy aisles full with star wars was overwhelming, the special edition release brought star wars back to being as popular as it ever was, probably my favourite year for star wars

Another odd thing not mentioned in this video is Princess "Val Kilmer" Leia.

It's funny, the blaster for Han is "a little" oversized. I compared it one day to the Black Series and they're about the same size. I always assumed the figures were based on that 77 poster that had a buff Luke with Leia at his feet holding the Lightsaber aloft. I refuse to talk trash about this line of figures.Always assumed that the heroic proportions were inspired by that poster. Later when they said they were worried about competing with superhero figures it made even more sense. 90s POTF & 2000's Vintage Collection are my absolute favorite lines of all time.

2:15: There is actually a mistake in that version of the Kenner logo. Someone making Kenner styled merchandise actually has modified the logo: the “K” has a weird line that joins it onto the first “E” but actually this was never used by the company in 1975-2000 when the logo was used. Not even Hasbro from its use of the Kenner logo has used this version. Hasbro still uses the original version of the 1975-2000 Kenner logo. The actual logo has the “K” stop before the “E” rather than joining onto it.

The criticisms don't make sense. I mean, they do and they don't. Yeah, they're too buff, weapons too big, yadda, so what? You love the OG figures, but WHEN did Luke have a yellow lightsaber? How is Ben movie accurate with that thing on his back? Why can't Han even hold his blaster? Ah, suddenly movie accurate isn't that important to you huh?
I mean, they're toys and have the expected flaws of their own context in time. Hating these over that stuff is just plain stupid.

I remember this Return. I think it was actually late 1994. I actually wanted a few of the figures after watching Star Wars for the first time that holiday season. I remember being greatly disappointed by the look figures. They were really nimble, small and unappealing.
