Classic Game Room - SEGA NOMAD review

- Classic Game Room HD reviews the portable SEGA NOMAD, the Sega Genesis Nomad that plays Sega Genesis game cartridges on the go! Sort of, although this is portable it really isn't that portable due to its size and pathetic battery life. But that doesn't stop it from being a worth addition to any Sega Genesis fan's library. You can play Genesis games on the couch, in bed, on a long road trip. Wherever you want, just don't try to throw this thing in your pocket and save games frequently. This CGR hardware review of the Sega Genesis nomad has pictures and video of the Sega Nomad showing the Sega Nomad playing Sega Genesis video games.

Ahh, back when you lived on Earth.
The memories lol
He’s always lived on earth silly
@@GriffinWilkins r/woooosh?
JK is he dead?
@@Term271 some say he died years ago.
Kind of like the 90s version of Nintendo Switch. You can play it on your TV, then take it with you on the go and still play your game.
No, this is the father of all those "portablizations" of various game consoles you see on the Internet.
TheMamaluigi300 Like the atGames Sega Genesis Portable, which actually has better speakers, but they're still not great.
@Earln, better speakers but shitty sound chip.
TheMamaluigi300 no that was the Turbo express.
DCT Yeah, I know
It was a dream of mine to own one. When I finally got it, I never pooped so long as when I played Phantasy Star IV. My parents must have been so confused.
Man I appreciate every single one of your videos been watching since 2010 just got back into game collecting and the nomad is pricey but next on my list 🔥🔥
Guess we know where the switch idea came from. Sega was ahead of their time.
TheRealtalk617 The PC engine hand held played the same games as the home console in 1990 although no TV out
ojideagu the TurboExpress?
@@FlyinBlaney Its a portable Turbo Graffix 16. It was released around the same time as the game gear and game boy and could play the console cartridges/chips, but it quickly fell into obscurity or notoriety depending on your stance because of its $299 price tag at the time. That was in the 90's so imagine how expensive it would be if it were released now.
Is it me or does it look like a camera?
An oversized camera, but yes it does.
Your channel was the first video game channel I watched on UA-cam. Was the best back in the day.
Always refreshing to watch these reviews.
As for the lines / physical design... it was the 90's! It's right at home. I had one of these back in the day - and while I did think it was awesome - it is true that I basically always had to use the AC adapter - and that screen was pretty bad. But hey! It was a whole Genesis that fit in a lunchbox.
You say the speaker is really quiet and you can hardly hear the game, but my Nomad is LOUD. Like, really loud. Maybe your Nomads speaker is faulty?
Mine is loud as well but the quality is poor.
Just picked one of these up can't wait to try it out!
It's obviously going to be big it was made in the 90s
I still have my Nomad from when I was a kid. It's still awesome, but I wish I would've picked up the rechargeable pack for it. Standard travel fare was a backpack with a large battery charger, and about 20 rechargeable batteries, lol.
Get yourself a adapter to plug your wall AC adapter into your car.than your good to go. it cost about $20.00 at WalMart
alot cheaper then batteries.
You can use a PS2 Slim power supply for the Nomad.
Really?
Yeah, works for the model 3 Genesis as well.
Great revew, keep them coming!
I got mine back in the 90's. I still have it and it still works today. It was great back in the 90's to play my sega games on the go. Yes the battery pack is def a must have for it. It takes forever to charge the battery pack.
the screen looks better than on gamegear!
"hey kid, look at this awesome d-pad on my sega, i'll let you play if you lend me some AA's"
"what's a d-pad? what's AA's? and what's a sega?"
it's amazing how much its changed in such a short time, i'm only 26 years old and already kids are laughing at the shitty, obsolete technology I grew up with and I hate their touchphones and social media.
"
All those things still exist.

Great review as always!
I remember 3 years ago this was the first CGR reveiw I ever watched.
It's truxton, nomad-er were you are.
Hehe! heeee....
i think it looks more like a very old digital camera :P
I loved my Sega Nomad! Saved up a ton of money to buy it (forget how much for). My dad and I would take turns playing NHL and Madden on it during road trips. Wish I still had the thing.
This is awesome! Im surprised more people weren't willing to buy this seeing as it doubles as a regular genesis console at home too
I beat Phantasy Star IV on my sega nomad...aw...memories.
I'm nomad, get it? Get it? Nevermind
LoL this joke is lit bruh

Great review, I have a question though. I am considering buying one, but the seller advertised it is "missing battery compartment cover". What is this and is it worth finding another one that does have it? I'd assume it's the battery cover, but does it affect how comfortable it is to hold?
@17R3W Probably, but it's always good to check. I have an unmoded MD2 and it can use RCA instead of the tuner. Was the model 1 not capable of that?
Anyway, thanks for the info.
This is one of those items which were a brilliant idea with a poor execution. The unit is oversized with a heavy battery consumption.
This is so true. The screen was also pretty bad with lots of lag and fade - though not quite as terrible as the Game Gear. That said, I absolutely loved this thing as a kid.
It was executed the only way possible for its time.
David Hoffnung
you can buy a 3" lcd screen with av input and mod this console!
+TheGlasses61 Like I said poor execution. There is a reason why Nintendo waited until 2001 with the GBA to re-release their 16-bit SNES games. Nintendo was less ambitious with experimental hardware like the Sega Nomad and their bottom line showed it. Nintendo has never had a loss leader console or handheld and is still surviving in the hardware and software sides. It's a shame Sega didn't see the right path.
War Zone The Game Boy just had the right formula. It’s hard to explain why it was so successful. Was it because of Tetris, Pokémon?
The Sega Nomad was not the right path. Unless you had an AC adapter and you were near an outlet it wasn’t very useful.
Dose it work with the 32x????
+Joshua Coult N-O-P-E.
hahaah
probably works with the power base converter though.
Joshua C
I doubt it works with the Sega CD or 32x

Love the show, Mark. If you want to get the most from that Nomad I'd recommend getting the lcd screen replaced and getting a rebuilt rechargeable battery to power it. With those two modifications you'll get great screen resolution and about 8.5 hours of battery life.
I had one of these as a kid. I never really played it 'on the go' because of the dismal battery life, which was even worse with the batts we had back then. I don't think I ever got more than about half an hour out of them. The only time I really used the batteries was when I was in the middle of a game and needed to switch to a different power outlet. But, it was great for taking over to my friends house. With the 2nd controller port and the ability to hook it up to a TV, it was so much easier than packing the full-size console. I miss it now...
where can i find gta 5 for this thing it dosent mater if i cant play online on it i wat the story mode
I honestly can't tell if you are trolling or just stupid.
+Snoopy DoesGaming i honestly cant tell if you're stupid or are new to the internet
+GrandTheftAero I choose 'C' None of the above.
+Snoopy DoesGaming Actually you're pretty much stupid if you can't take sarcasm.
simple. go to www.realwebsiteforreal.com and you can buy it for $420.69
omg couldnt make a bigger screen? lol
that woulf be more expensive, and it already eats up 6 batteries in an hour
my awesome wife got me a Nomad for Christmas this past year. she's incredible..
awesome! wish I had one of these things back in the day! Sega had their hands on some state of the art technology before they went under!
Too bad these things are about a hundred bucks nowadays :(
For a game system of any kind $100 isn't that bad
Buttered Toast so just put a emulator on your mobile phone
+Vincent Tobio that's not the same
Don't recommend anyone buying this. Just get a PSP, a Genesis emulator and you can fit the entire library of Genesis games on one Memory card. Not to mention that the PSP is a much better system in terms of size, screen quality and battery life, and can do more than just play Genesis games.
Sad truth. But the PSP emulation really makes it up to you! I got 8 bit, 16 bit and arcade emulators that run perfectly. PSP needs to be on a golden pedestal for its emulation capabilities.
Chalkaspis Me too. PSP is the most underrated gaming device IMO. It can do so much, and for me it's way better than the DS. I have the entire collection of SMS, Genesis, NES, GBA, Arcade, and SNES roms on a 32GB card with a bunch of PS1 and PSP games also. I love that I can make my own PS1 isos and play my entire collection any time, on a nice screen pixel perfect (better than it will look on my TV which will be stretched and pixellated).
lostn65 PSP can even handle N64 games, damn for portable console from 2004, that is pretty impressive (although the performance sometimes drops)
*****
Only if you don't mind touch screen controls. I like having physical feedback when I press a button. At least for serious games. For touch screen games, it's obviously better, but none of these emulated games are touch screen based.
***** PSP got something that makes it superior than any tablet: BUTTONS!
I got a box of old sega video games cartridges given to me, & on the bottom was a Nomad. It was in perfect shape, & still had the protective plastic on the screen. Battery pack, AC, etc. was all there. Sold it on Ebay to some chick in Italy for $50.
This console originated from the Sega Mega Jet in Japan, which were Sega Megadrive/Genesis consoles that were intergrated with airlines. The Mega Jet did not have a screen, nor did it take batteries, but it was a handheld that hooked up to a screen and required an AC adapter.
love this machine. Classic. Musha looked great on the nomad by the way.
One of the best system names ever. "Nomad". Can you feel your tattered cape blow in the desert wind? On the journey of a exiled Hero. With only the Genesis games of his homeland to guide the way.
I have a Master Converter (it's like the power base converter but it's just a normal cartridge with a master system cartridge slot on top). Do you think it could be used to play SMS games on this?
Also, how doe it look on a TV screen?
God I wish I could go back an relive my childhood. Even though we were so broke. we had to save up, just to be poor. It was still a hell of a ride and so much memories. :)
dont forget that badass backlit screen
I always wanted to have one of these!
HELL YEAH! I still have my nomad with both super hang on and strider! 1 game I love 2 play on the nomad with friends are some of the fun 2player games like Streets Of Rage and Toejam and Earl. Everyone is trying 2 focus on the small screen and what not. My screen is still in good shape, and is still very bright after 10+ years. And as I noticed in your game gear review you were smart and got some double AA energizer rechargeables, which are a big help. This system rocks, 1 of the best from sega.
I had this device over 20 years ago plus the original cartridges for it .
oh man, Strider and Hang On bring back so many good memories :D
I had one of these babies back in the day! It was good for times when my brother wanted to play a different Genesis game on the console than me. All I had to do was fire up my Nomad and get down to playing what I want without bothering my bro!
I just ordered my sega genesis and am watching sega genesis vids to make myself more excited for when it arrives!
Are you a time traveler? Or just someone *WAY* too far in the past? The Genesis came out 26 years ago, haha.
I got it from amazon. lol
great review bud!
@Disthron
I assume it looks just any other Genesis on the TV screen (it has standard outputs).
The Genesis "Classic game rooms HD" uses is a modded version to surport S-Video out, so his video looks better then a typical Genesis.
I wanted this so bad as a kid! No idea how Sega cocked up such a great idea.
i have this one, with my nec pc engin gt this is one of my favorite old school portable system.
I remember my friend had one of these and we used to try to play 2 player games using the little display for both people.
GREAT review.
good stuff! I still have mine too. I found that if you take a piece of cardboard like a baseball card of just the right thickness and insert it behind the cart, it will help increase resistance to shock that would freeze the game.
bought it in '99. best thing ever for road trips. I actually still have it.
@miguelthegamer
The Mode button allowed support for games that have issues with 6-button pads. It is to ensure compatability with older games that for some reason or another will not work with a 6-button controller. It also served as an extra button for some SEGA Genesis games.
CGR is rad! I was wondering if the Nomad works with the 32x and Master system converter...
@bazfanv2
The Nomad CAN be connected to a TV, via the same cable that the Genesis model 2 and 32X use.
I really want one of these!!!
I just bought one. Can't wait to try it out! I think the Nomad was a great idea, if only it didn't eat so many batteries :0
I really love your videos...you are the boss
Man I miss SEGA handhelds, I use to love playing my GameGear for hours on end, when at one point it was my main game system, then i got the Genesis and was blown out the water at the time, then my oldest bro who was living in collage at the time came down for a visit with the Nomad, and it just blew my mind at the time lol. Good times Good times.
Wow, That thing takes lots of power, 6 Batteries in one hour. Nice Review.
man I like this reviews of old game Consoles and games I played Strider but I did not get far hehe but I loved to play RASTAN I have still somewhere Sega Master System 2 I think it still works I have not played them for a long time
What's crazy is I have the external Game Gear Rechargable battery pack that still holds a full charge after all this time. It powers the Nomad as well, though for a shorter period of time. if you can find one of these batteries that still works its the best way to power the Game Gear and Nomad on the go. Battery life I get is 6 hours per charge on the Game Gear, 4 hours on the Nomad.
I am a proud owner of one of these great handhelds, the cartridge plugs in without no tries at all. I stuck Duracell Ultra Power batteries in mine and it gave me a solid 2 hours of game play, I am currently investing almost $40 for 6 of the best rechargeable batteries on the market right now. I only bought 4 of these special batteries because of my limited budget at the time. And only two of these batteries kept my game boy color on for almost two months constant!
My local gamestore has this, I'm definitely getting it for christmas
Did you get it?
Sadly nope, my parents didn't know exactly wget I was talking about.
Teaze that sucks. looks like you got a switch tho...
Try playing Sonic3 + Sonic & Knuckles with that Nomad... sucks if u move a bit too much. Love the handheld.. still have mine! Great review.
I am oldschool always and forever. I love my Sega Nomad. I usually plug it into the tv to play. Wouldnt trade it for anything. Now I have my favorite sega and nintendo classics on my galaxy note android phone which is the same screen size as the ps vita.
The nomad can be hooked up to a tv and be played (obviously) but the controller port is not for player 1. It is for player 2. It can be used while player one uses the nomad and player two looks at the screen and plays with a second controller or it can be used on the tv. Just to clarify. If you hook it up to a tv player one has to use the nomad as their controller.
I still have one of these
Awesome review! I had one of these in 6th or 7th grade, took it with me on bus field trips and band trips. Yes battery life was horrible and sometimes it took 3 or 4 cycles of switching on and off to get the game to run. Never had an issue with bumping the system and crashing the game though. Probably a slight defect with your unit?
What really sucked is that if you use the video out to plug into a TV, it looks just like the small screen resolution, really shitty. But it did play well.
i want one I'm not even a sega fan, but being able to play genasis games portable is so cool
my favourite reviews are the ones about consoles
love this show
I had a game gear back in the day but i've never heard of this until now.
oooh great! where do i put the snes carts then? o.0
This must've been awesome back then :) ... kinda weird to think about that a thing like this needed to be this huge and eat so much energy when now I can play (almost) every NES, SNES, Genesis etc. Games on my slim PSP for many Hours! :D
Do you have a Sega Genesis CDX to review? I know Scott Johnson (your voice twin) of ExtraLife fame has one. I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm not sure of the reliability. Scott says it's a pretty cool piece of Sega Genesis era tech, but regrets having to pay over $500 for his at the time it came out.
I first heard of the genesis game Outrun after watching this video! Best driving game I ever played!
Play the arcade version of OutRun with MAME. It's even better. I remember the arcade cabinets of this game in the 80s also had some cool gimmicks such as a vibrating steering wheel (when the car crashed) or even a moving arcade cabinet! Yes, the entire machine rocked both sides when crashing :-). Also try OutRun 2006, which was released for PSP, PS2, Og Xbox and PC, which is a pretty decent arcade driving game.
I remember years ago, a guy made one of these to play Atari 2600 carts. He had several newer and newer versions. It probably looks really good nowadays.
what kinda screen did it come with i know it was not LCD and how much was it priced back in the day
Also I find turning down the brightness of the screen brings out more color on the screen.
Is the sound on this better than the atgames plug and play genesis consoles?
Everything else on the face of this planet sounds better than the AtGames Genesis.
@Disthron
It's capable of RCA but not S-Video, so the video quality is reduced. Although 21 years ago I'm sure no one cared.
I wonder if you could open up a Sega Nomad and Game Gear and replace the screens with the newer Active Matrix LCD screens. I don't think WVGA would work, but it is an interesting idea I have if I do say so myself.
@KDCW3534A Agreed, though I do have a nice setup at my place. Genesis/Sega CD in the back room hooked to the tube TV, while in the living room I have a discreet model 2 a/v cable tucked behind the TV for the Nomad. That way I can Nomad it on the HDTV without cluttering up the cabinet with a second Genesis.
@bazfanv2
Master System converter (Power Base Converter) will not work.
I would even say the screen and speaker are nearly as good as modern handhelds like the DS and PSP. The controler port works perfectly, though it is a little hard to have both people play on such a small screen. Another thing he didn't mention is that it has an video out port so you can hook it up to a TV (works great for hotel rooms) and you can even use the Nomad as the controler 1 and player 2 plays by the controler slot. It uses a Genesis 2 power block if anybody is wondering.
could you play Japanese genesis games on the nomad? id be interested in getting one to try out games from all regions.
Holy Crap! Can you make a video showing them?
Cool, didnt know about this console.
Is there a company that makes a battery pack that plugs into the AC that gives you a longer wireless battery that you could use for this
@TheBatmanfreak101 32X is incompatible with Nomad, i have both systems and 32X block video output from Nomad, make it imposible to connect
@Mysterious0Bob on my gba sp the led light thing burned out and now i cant see it at all...
I did back in the 90's. You get a backpack put a ton of sega games in it and you are set.
why the heck were all the opponents in super hang on so quick at the line? I guess the gear ratios were just too high making low top speeds.
