- Classic Game Room HD reviews the NEC Turbografx-16 video game console (also known as the PC-Engine in Japan, although there are differences). Released in 1989 in the U.S. the Turbografx-16 has a number of exclusive titles like Blazing Lazers and Bonk's Adventure, many of which are now available for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.

Rewatching this many years later for fun. Nothing like original Classic Room. What a throwback to the good ole days.
Awesome system! Had one of these when I was growing up, but didn't have many games for it and it unfortunately died. Found one again for $250 with 18 games plus 5 I purchased afterwards, lots of awesome games I had missed out on this system. TurboGrafx 16 RULES!
Retro Gaming Guitarist awesome. I need one
My mother had this old console back when I was little. Her favorite game was Bonk.
Same with my Uncle i loved bonk
What's really mind blowing is that the PC-Engine was INSANELY popular in Japan, but only had a miniscule following in the United States where the Sega Genesis dominated for the better half of the 90's. Like with the Master System, if more third parties had been invested in developing software for it, the playing ground could have been completely level I assure you
You can tell how old this video is because he said the Turbografx-16 is "affordable". Hahahahahaha! Not anymore!
Best just to import a PC Engine, it's substantially cheaper and the games are as well
+Dennis Forstner I'm not sure if the PC Engine is even that much more affordable these days. I mean, they do cost less overall on ebay, but the more people want to collect for the Turbografx 16, the more people will be drawn to the PC Engine to save money and then the prices will go up. Why didn't I get a Turbografx like three years ago?
Meh, depends where you go. I purchased my TG-16 yesterday at a local game store for $90.
Now go and fine games for cheap money. Not gonna happen. Keith courage Alpha Zone use to be 5 or 6 bucks years a go. today now closer or above $20, And it was the game sold with the system.
Carlo Castronovo no itd not. Ive seen it go for $5 cart only. And $10 complete.
"And it turns red, letting you know it's angry." Lol nice review :)
The TurboGrafx was such an underrated system with some wonderful Game gems.
This is def a rare console
I have never come across any games nor consoles in my 5 year game chasing in Florida in the wild , I've seen one console in one store and I purchased it today in the original box for $115 , doesn't have the back piece nor Keith courage but works fine and is in nice shape , glad to get this , I only want splatterhouse, bonks adventure , bonks revenge , space harrier and some Shooters like blazing Lazers, $115 might sound like A lot to some people but I have wanted this for a while and never find this console and when it was boxed I knew I had to have it
Crazycarls adventures I live in Florida and had the same problem I worked with a guy who barters and he was trying to sell me old consoles he brought me everything I had already and I told him not interested if it’s now a turbo graft 16 I don’t need it he said he thought he had one and I called bullshit because no one just has one around their house without knowing for sure but man I was wrong bought it off him for a hundred
No wonder why its more expensive than any Old Nintendo console right now
I'd love it if they released a TG16 Classic with games already on it. I'd love to buy the actual console but in 2017 it's a very expensive console to collect for.
My brother and I got the TurboGrafx 16 in 1989. It is an awesome video game system 😀👍
And 5 years later, the systems and games are no longer affordable. Glad I had one from when I was a kid. Wouldn't want to be starting a collection today!
Retrosys No kidding. I stupidly sold mine back in 99, for next to nothing. I decided to look into getting one last week, and I was shocked at what they are selling for.
+Retrosys Dont look online - everything is overpriced. If you have a local used games store, you might be in luck. I recently picked up NES, SNES and PS2 consoles for 100 total. Games were in the 1-3 dollar range and most came with their original packaging and manuals... If you are trying to buy on ebay, you are going to get screwed. TurboGrafx I'd expect would be a little bit more expensive since it's not as common as the ones I mentioned, but still.. the guys trying to sell classic consoles for $300-400 just because they can are out to lunch.
+Retrosys I recently picked up mine for 90 euros sealed in the box, the blazing lazer box edition, along with a sealed box with TG acessories too.
For what I understand, the TG16 PAL version is just an US TG version modified to run on pal countries .. it runs all US library (there is no PAL turbografx library anyways) it has the cd ad output, so I thinhk it will work just fine with the US CD addon
Rudi Moreira wow sweet
There was an accessory called the turbo booster that upgraded the sound to glorious stereo and used a video out :-). There is also an accessory called the turbo tap to let 5 people play at once! Also there is an extension for the turbo tap that's 5' long.
The music for this system is exceptional. Some of the best synth sounds I've ever heard.
Listen to Bonk's Revenge.
Okay I'll order Bonks Revenge soon because you said so 🙏🏻☯️🥶‼
i realize I am pretty randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to stream new movies online ?
One of the best systems of all time.
The Turbografx-16 featured some of the best shoot-em-ups and rpg action ever on any home console. All hail the mighty turbografx-16!
I passed on a boxed system with 16 boxed games for $40 at an estate sale because I already had a system. Wow can Lord Karnage take me back in time? By the way this guy is super cheezy and that is why I love every minute of his vids. He is super 80s and just awesome!!! Thanks for the retro vids.
I was momentarily stunned when you said it was donated by John in Wisconsin, because my grandpa's name is John, and he lives in Wisconsin. I was no longer shocked after you said he was from Milwaukee, because my grandpa lives in Madison.
I love this console, I keep a Turbgrafx-16 pic for my desktop wallpaper at all times.
Me and my brother got the turbographix 16 in 1989. It was awesome, plus it was first game system with a cd player. The games on it were fun.
Great video! Good to see another TurboGrafx fan out there.
i love the music when the "this is a journalistic review of.." card comes up : )
Turbografx 16 in my opinion is the best vintage game system there was. It's become very collectible now since this review. If you haven't played one your missing out on a FANTASTIC game system
When Mark was trying to pronounce HuCard, I was about to crack up laughing! I don't know why.
yeah, Pyuke-Card
The console had a expansion back you plug in the back that you had RCA out and memory pack that looks like the back cover, Had one in the early 90's with the CD rom that also plugged into the back. Now I have desk top with emulators to relive the experience. Great console brings back allot of gaming memories!
I just finally got one at the Cleveland Gaming Classic the other day! I know, I have all the games on my wiiu but I'm such a Bonk fan I wanted the system his games originated on!
You know what I like to do when I'm depressed? Get a bowl of ice-cream, a cup of coffee and watching Classic Game Room aaaaaaall night long.
I was one of the only people in my area to own one of these back in the day! It was great! Alien crush and devils crush rock!
Gotta love his humor.
The Turbografx16 does NOT want this game to escape.
Makes me so happy I picked up a PC Engine mini when I could 🙂
:-) I Love your videos. The direction arrow is very cool
Loved the comment about going outside on your laptop to shop ebay!
Great review as always! I wished the system worked as a ATM too by the way.
I loved the "emerging technology" bit.
I liked how the portable version, Turbo Express, used the same game cards, no need to buy ones specifically for the portable. :)
Still playing my original 1990 Turbo.Awesome system.
That system looks so cool. I want it so badly.
LOL you really enjoy your videos. That's awesome. Nice to see somebody have fun with games!
I remember when everyone was deciding to upgrade from the NES to either Genesis or TG-16. I chose the Genny the Christmas after its release. But later in the new year I went to a friend's house who had bought a TG-16 and I was amazed with the crips sounds and graphics of Keith Courage! Two months later I bought my own Turbo and I ended up collecting way more games for it than my Sega. Loved TG-16 to death! Still have mine and my complete game library! But of course the SNES bested them both!!
I was just checking out my subscriptions when this popped up.
Cool review, Mark and co. Will you review anymore TG-16 games soon, like Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, The Legendary Axe, or the TG-16 version of R-Type? It would be great if you did so :)
There was an accessory that attached to the back port that included composite video and audio jacks.
I think the turbo grafx has the coolest looking media. Wish all games kept hucards. Love your videos so entertaining
"Affordable"? My how times have changed!
"Prices are reasonable, not in high demand." 10 years later, average price for Turbo Duo: $1300.
I'm loving the jazzy background music..
"Letting you know it's angry." Unexpected LOL!
Ahh, this brings back good memories.
The console itself actually has composite and stereo output right there on the back plane, that you showed in the video. It's just that the greedy NEC made customers buy the "booster" or "booster plus" to get access to it. So it do actually have it. It also had RGB out on those pins too.
man i miss my turbografx :'(
It was a fun system. I rented it out one time from my local vidoe store. It provided hours of video game injoyment. I was only sorry that I had to return it. The best game was Slaughter House. The main reason for me to rent it. Great review.
great review as always.
For your line out composite/stereo needs without having to buy the the TurboGrafx CD. They were called the TurboBooster (adding only AV out) or the Booster Plus with the same features and system hosted memory backup. Many games with password save also had a "File Cabinet" feature which the TurboBooster Plus or Turbo CD expansion had. No password nightmares since the HuCards lacked battery backup obviously. The TG16 was a powerful system and a shooters dream, the best of em' never made it to Wii.
I love how the Turborgrafx uses old PC connections for the Pad and Expansion.
Funnily enough the Genesis/Mega Drive was a distant third in Japan after NES and Turbo Grafix 16/PC Engine
I was thinking about getting a Turbografx 16 admittedly mostly to play Splatterhouse. I don't know much about the system so I was wondering are there any other REALLY good games on the system that I should get to make the purchase a little more worth it? Maybe a good RPG or something since I seem to suck at spaceship shooters. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.
this beast was way ahead of its time, and its funny because they only sold the systems in big cities
there was an add on called the "Turbo-booster" that connected to the back that gave it composite video out and stereo output.
The Turbo's comp. was the NES, GENESIS, NEO GEO, SNES, PANASONIC 3DO (no real competition here) + the freakin handhelds of the time. Highly underrated system with lots of gems.
You can get line out composite with an adapter that fits on the back. You can also do that with the CD Rom attachment.
Just looked at Turbografx 16's on Ebay there between 100 & 300 today lol. I'll give it a few years when the retro gaming market crashes and pick one up thin.
Don't count on the market crashing. My estimate is it will flatten but not crash.
I would love to pick one up, but damn, you gamers and collectors want it to cost out of the ass to buy. I have to pay up to 100 to 300 dollars just for a TG16? Thanks, but no thanks!
Jeremy M 100 bucks is too much? Geez dude.
Well, I have a very limited budget.
Get it while you can these systems are nearly obscure. I found one at a used gaming store in its original box with 18 games for $250. First time I had seen one in a store in 10 years.
Damn this takes me back
you my friend are the best reviewer on the net u rock keep up the awesome reviews
i loved this thing it was fun! I loved bonk and legendary axe!!!
nice video i will play mine for the first time I just got mine Thankyou very much for sharing your video thanks again
got into this one because of the wii shop
now i have a briefcase pc engine cd unit
and the system in this video 🥺💖
Hey Mark, in case you didn't know you could purchase a turbo booster or turbo cd to get composite video/sound out. I think collecting t-16 stuff is fun because there were only a limited number of games released here, so collecting the entire library is feasible though costly. Especially with games like Magical Chase and Dynastic Hero being worth nearly a grand each.
@MaximumRD, "Are you off your meds again" Lol, nice one bud. UA-cam never fails to brighten my day.
my first 1`6 bit console :) i even had the cd rom it was fun for a wail but then i got a super nes
In response to the no RCA video and sound. Yes one could have it as i bought one and still have it. Was called the Turbo Booster. was a plug in for the back and gave one a yellow red and white rca style connection. was a nice improvement in sound and video. plus to those who thought it was a 8 bit , no it was TWO 8 bit processors hence 16. Still as always dud your videos are awesome. !!
Konami did make Dracula X for it in Japan. Capcom games were ported to it by NEC (again, in Japan). There were tons of great games for it in Japan, but NEC was hesitant to release them (like the rpg's) in the US. Not only that, Nintendo locked companies from releasing the same game for competing systems in the US. I have a TurboDuo with quite a few Japanese and US games. Great system!
what is the theme song intro to these reviews from
I tried out the Turbo Grafx 16 once in big department store.
Theres a AV adapter made by hyperkin that plugs into the back port I recently got one for my Turbografix off Amazon
Bro you can make your own cable too. I had made mine long before hyperkin put their thing out
Game Bros in Dickinson TX Has the entire library of games on sale.
What stores can you go and buy cartridges for old consoles I'm starting to collect and don't always want to use eBay
Man this brings me back... I was so embarrased to own one, LoL.
If I remember correctly it's actually 8-bit, most exciting thing was waiting for Street Fighter II to be ported, don't kno if it ever did.
In Japan SFII CE came out for the system
nice review! just like always.
i had a turbografx 16 when i was a kid and was the only person i knew who had one..........and my mom gave it away when i got a snes without telling me! i guess have two consoles from the same generation at the same time was a new idea in the early 90s
Oh how the times have changed
Connecting RF through a VCR for Composite? Does that really work/upgrade the video signal? There for no need for Turbo Booster?
no it looks awful. just buy a Turbo Booster or Super CD ROM
+TnVGaming Or a duo. Or whatever one of these fucking CD consoles that still work.
I don't know why people were so obsessed over the number of bits. The primary thing 16-bits provided you with in that era was an increased color palette - which the TG-16 accomplished with its GPU. The CPU itself was 8-bit, but it was a rather fast 8-bit processor, and the games generally weren't hindered by it. Bits /= speed. For instance, most games on the N64 actually ran almost all of their instructions in 32-bit, because 64-bit was actually slower for most purposes at that time.
Its controller slot is an s-video connector?
You can do RCA output with a thing, i think it was called the turbo booster. it used the huge expansion slot on the back, same as the cd-rom addon.
if there was a video game class i would want Mark as the professor
Bloody Wolf, Blazing Lazers, Bonk's Adventure 1-3, Soldier Blade, New Adventure Island, Legendary Axe I & II, Air Zonk, Magical Chase, Legend of Hero Tonma, Alien Crush, Devil's Crush, Neutopia I & II, Vigilante, Splatterhouse, Ninja Spirit, Parasol Stars (Bubble Bobble III), Dead Moon, Super Star Soldier, Lords of Thunder (CD), Ordyne, Rockman, Castlevania Dracula X Rondo of Blood (PC Engine Super CD) etc, etc, etc THE TURBO/ PC ENGINE IS A MUST!
Tomorrow I'll be getting one !
I wish I had kept my TG16, I had all the good games it had to offer like Bonk, Legendary axe etc, I would love to play some Bonk about now :D
Also you there is a add on for the back of the system that lets you use AV out-red,white,and yellow. So it is possible to get video quality on the system like the SNES
There was an Audio/Video enhancer attachment for the TurboGrafx 16. If you can find one, I'd love for you to review it.
Like Serraxor said, there is an AV-out accessory called the "Turbo Booster" which looks like the plastic covering on the back. And the accessory port on the back was for the CD ROM add on.
Still, the Japanese PC Engine and the dock for the CD ROM2 drive was how the North America should have gotten it to.
@West Brick. I Agree totally with that. I love CGR, and most reviews, but I wanted to jump in and give this amazing system the review it deserved. most
Hopefully, HudsonSoft and NEC will port their best TurboGrafx 16 games to GameRoom. That way you'll have a 3D modeled TurboGrafx 16 console hooked up to a virtual TurboGrafx 16 arcade cabinet.
I keep on calling Blazing Lazers "Blazing Saddles." The movie must be stuck in my head, i'm gonna go watch it now.
Isn't it a lovely mornin'
lightsouthaha so many hilarious moments in that movie...
Our new town sheriff is a ******!!!!
There's a peripheral called the Turbo Booster that let's you use standard RCA cables. Might make capturing footage easier.
@ anthonywastrinh,
bro were talking here of 'composite' video output. I'm not exactly sure why you're referring to component?
You should review more of the different consoles in the pc engine/turbografx series.
There is an adapter for the TG16 called the Turbo Enhancer that gives you composite a/v out.
the turbo booster plus added the rca av out and a battery backed ram for gamesaves
That's exactly what I was thinking. A duo can run up to $300 if you include the shipping and the good games are all $50 or more.
At the pawn shop were I live there's always a ton of dream cast games
