Wagner Group mercenaries seize Russia’s war HQ in Rostov-on-Don 'coup' against Putin

- Wagner mercenaries were posted in a street in Rostov-on-Don on Saturday (June 24) as the rebellious Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin demanded that Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's top general Valery Gerasimov come to meet him the southern City.
Prigozhin said in one video posted on social media by his own press service that he was now at the headquarters of the Southern Military District, which is in Rostov-on-Don.
"We have arrived here, we want to receive the chief of the general staff and Shoigu," Prigozhin said on the video. "Unless they come, we'll be here, we'll blockade the city of Rostov and head for Moscow."
A handful of mercenary fighters were seen guarding and deploying in on of Rostov-on-Don's street, including a small tank and military vehicles.

What a time to be alive. Witnessing history. Many soldiers in the Russian army respect and others are afraid of Wagner. Many civilians support them for what they did in Bakhmut, when the regular army couldn't get it done. Even the Ukrainians will tell you Wagner fighters are fierce, kinda like the Taliban. Wagner is a joke. Those are not mercenaries - those are ordinary people who were offered money or freedom, in case of prisoners, to fight with no previous experience. A mercenary is someone with experience, usually some of the best in their field - Wagner went through those in Syria and early in Ukraine.

68-year-old Brit here. Early 1990s, was part of a multi-church 3-week mission in Rostov-on-Don. Got to know that crossroads well. Rostov administration area was about twice the size of France, 2 million people, one million in Rostov. Difficult to envisage the empty birch forest nature of that part of the world. A party of Austrian hunters on same flight - the bears are bigger over there. Took trains and buses to remote hamlets south of Azov which had only just become legit for foreigners to visit
