There are no new voting rules. 10 years residency was agreed as part of Noumea accord in 1998. Independent movement asked french president Chirac to freeze the voting rights in 2007. Now that they lost 3 referendums on independence they resort to violence whereas all clauses of Noumea agreements have been fulfilled, all saved this one on voting rights.

Yes, im one of those who would like the right to vote. Ive been living here for 11 years now. Im married to a local girl and have had 2 children. Immigrating here meant starting up my own business because there are laws in place to stop immigrants from being hire for local jobs.
I've got no knowledge of the French system but I'm curious if there is a similar rule in France itself. By that I mean if someone immigrates to France and remains there for ten years or some other specified time frame, is the right to vote conferred automatically? If so, does it apply to all or just those who come from a French territory? If it's done for all, France may well be Islamic in ten years. I'm legitimately curious, not trying to be a smart-***
@@JustSir430 if you hold FR nationality you can vote in metropolitan FR or in any oversea territory you reside in. NC is an exception where everyone hold FR passport, Kanak included, but only the people who had at least 10 years of residency in 1998 and their adult kids can vote. It means people who resided there in 1988 or before. It states that NC is a citizenship and this citizenship is frozen since 1998. Well, not saying it is good or bad but FR citizenship is far from frozen and resident of FR can request for it as early as after 5 years of residency. Also if a Kanak moves from NC to any other FR territory, the right to vote locally in this territory is given after 6 months.

Two were close contests. 44% voted for independence. The last one held in 2021 was boycotted by the pro independence parties. The resentment is always simmering and waiting for an opportunity to boil over. The voting reforms from Paris pushed those who opposed French rule over the edge. 44% is sizeable and cannot be ignored.
