'He perceived the rule of Robert Baratheon to be weak and lacking the support of the many noble houses of Westeros' What? 8 Great Houses. He is the head of House Baratheon. He's married into House Lannister. His best friend is ruling House Stark. Best friend's wife's family is from House Tully's main branch. His hand of the King and father figure is the head of House Arryn, plus he is also married to best friend wife's sister making the Riverlands alliance even stronger. He should have used the fleet wisely. Being an island nation one can afford being outnumbered ten to one as long as the fleet can hold. Look at Britain during the Napoleonic Wars.

It’s worth noting that the Ironborn lost the war when Stannis defeated the Iron Fleet at Fair Isle. The invasion wasn’t that necessary and was only feasible because of Stannis. This is why Stannis felt cheated when Robert and Ned got more glory, and got ignored (even though his advice to kill Balon was pretty much correct).
I really never got why Balon would think that Roberts rule was so weak that he would not get the support to end his rebellion. The North, Vale and Riverlands supported his rebellion, he was married to Cersei so the support of the Westerlands was also certain and his brother ruled the Stormlands. Balon's chances were zero from the start.
Stoner Puppy the ironborn are the dumbest of the 7 kingdoms, plus previous kings were afraid of them- Dagon Greyjoy rather enjoyed tormenting the mainland as King Aenys Targaryen did little
Stoner Puppy might be he was also influenced by visions (maybe from the Drowned God, maybe from someone else, maybe even Euron. He's far more scary in the books).
P K Yeah maybe Euron thought Robert would execute Balon and that he would be appointed as ruler afterwards. But still that was before Euron traveled the world and got to know all the mystical stuff. So how would he have known, at that time, to influence his brother like that? I really like those Euron theories, I have a feeling he might be even more dangerous than we think.
Stoner Puppy True enough. While you are right that he probably didn't have the power back than he certainly was sick enough. But without someone influencing Balon his rebellion does seem very stupid and Martin usually makes everything so believable. Than again, there were more stupid acts in actual history, so what gives?

During the attack on Lannisport, Victarion did lead the forces on the front lines but it was Euron who thought out the plan of attack which lead to their victory.
One of the things that stood out the most to me with Game of Thrones was when Tywin melted down Ned's great sword. With Scottish ancestry, I've always felt a strong kinship with any "Men of the North" type people and that just kind of churned my stomach to see that.
After Ser Arthur Dayne was killed, Ned Stark could have kept his legendary sword Dawn for himself but instead he travelled to Starfall and returned it. The Lannisters are really jumped up thieves. Look up Lann the Clever the founder of House Lannister and how he stole Casterly Rock from the Casterlys
Theres a lot of battles on the lotrs and silmarillion has more, thats true, but they arent very detailed, i think the most detailed one is the pelennor field battle in return of the king and the 5 armies battle, the silmarillion battles dosent have good tactical descriptions
Robert had a solid alliance with four of the great houses in addition to controlling the Stormlands and Crownlands. That Balon thought his rule was weak just shows how incompetent Balon was.
yea he was truly a dumbass, also he somehow thought that the kingdoms closest to him wouldn't also immediately support Robert because they obviously fucking hate the Ironborn and wouldn't want them to be independent just constantly raiding them
6 years too late but, balon was thinking of the bannermen of the great houses, he always knew that the starks, tullys, Lannister, arryn and baratheons would support Robert, he was think that robert wouldn't get support from houses like the brackens, frey, brax, westerlings, royce, waynwood, caron and dondarion, houses sworn to the great houses that had nothing to gain from this war, he was wrong of course but only in hindsight, House tully for example can raise less men than the Freys, Brackens and Blackwoods, hell House hightower is actually way stronger than house tyrell, the great houses are only powerful as long their bannermen follow them, in this case they did but it wasn't unreasonable for Balon to gamble on them not following robert
So it really is awesome how thorros and jorrah both stormed the castle first. I remember hearing that in one of he episodes and I’m glad it was mentioned here
This video made me think that the Ironborn could keep their "old way" and also avoid being wrecked by the 7 kingdoms. All they have to do is become seafaring mercenaries. They can fight on behalf of the free cities in the narrow sea to attack the shipping of their enemies or raid their shores. They could even do the same for the Iron Throne. I wonder why they never thought about doing that. Probably because they're not real I guess.

The thing with many battles in the past of the ASOIAF is that they're not well documented in tactics, setting and the like. GRRM only mentions what's useful to the reader and the story
Stanley Hendrick Yeah one of his weaknesses is his inability to visualise or describe a battle very well... He usually only focuses on one or two people, as oppose to the larger picture.
GRRM does not need to do so, as ASOIAF is written as a series of viewpoints and maesters' writings. No one sees a battle the same way, so an overview is next to impossible. All we need to know is that Maeleys joined eight other rulers and was going to invade the Westerosi mainland, King Jaehereys II called the banners, many of the grandfathers and fathers in the main story made their bones, Lord Baelish made friends with Lord Tully, Aerys II won his knighthood, Quellon Greyjoy joined in and Barristan Selmy killed Maelys Blackfyre and joined the Kingsguard. That's all that needs to be known, really.
My friend keep asking me why I like Stannis. This is one of them : he is actual commander with actual skill and brain, not some mary sue with cgi dragons. Honestly when was the last time Daenerys had to use his OWN ability to solve a problem instead of "burn them all *que the epic music*"
Man ... you can't blame Daenerys for being a Mary Sue and also blame her for not using her own abilities to solve problems. The feature of a Mary Sue IS her ability to solve everything on her own.
Daenerys is no Mary Sue, she is one of the main characters. And using dragons is one of her OWN abilities. She has Grey Worm, Daario and Barristan Selmy to handle military affairs (plus Meereneese who are absent in the show). If you can't handle fantasy, go read something simpler. I'd suggest the Peter and Jane books.
Well, she did come up with the battleplan to take Meereen, in the books. Every character had been ruined in the show. Besides, she's a child. Not a seasoned commander who had been trained in the ways of war.

Politically clever move to be fair. Beheading Balon Greyjoy, would incite even more anger in the Ironborn, who had already lost so much with the destruction of the Iron Fleet and the vast invasion of the Iron Island and the slaughter at the Siege of Pyke. By keeping Balon alive, and sworn to King Robert, the Ironborn now had their figurehead to blame: Their own Lord Balon, instead of Robert Baratheon. Now the Ironborn had the 'Man who Failed them', as a leader, instead of Robert Baratheon as the man who punished them. It'd ensure the Ironborn would atleast néver follow Balon Greyjoy into a battle against the mainland again. Especially since Ned Stark took his only living/surviving son, Theon, as a Ward(hostage) to ensure Balon's loyalty. Re-educating Theon in 'new ways', once Balon had passed away, Theon would be the heir to take upon the Salt Throne, and rule the Iron islands in a different manner, due to his formal education at Winterfell.

So that's 5/8 main houses supporting him completely, and Greyjoy's are one of those three remaining. So that only leaves the Tyrell's and Martell's, the Tyrell's who do whatever they can to be on the winning side, so they would also be on Robert's side. The Martell's aren't stupid, they would probably stay out of it unless they have to join and they would join the Crown.
Balon is a bloody fool.
And where are Martels ?
@@niccolorichter1488 Damn, I forgot Dorne, cause it's the seven kingdoms but there's nine regions. I must edit that, anyway, they would probably join the the crown too considering every other house would.

@@andrewmcgill9544 I mean yes… but he’s doing it for self serving reasons. He has legitimate issues with The Iron Throne.
@@andrewmcgill9544 and so was Robert, stannis, and everyone else who followed him
It’s worth noting that the Ironborn lost the war when Stannis defeated the Iron Fleet at Fair Isle. The invasion wasn’t that necessary and was only feasible because of Stannis.
This is why Stannis felt cheated when Robert and Ned got more glory, and got ignored (even though his advice to kill Balon was pretty much correct).
Robert Baratheon is a stupid sack of crap. He never appreciated Stannis
And d&d thought that ramsay bolton with 20 men could sneak up to stannis's camp undetected lol💀
A lot of people speculate that Robert let Baylon live because he wanted another battle like this.
Than again, there were more stupid acts in actual history, so what gives?
it wouldn't be the first time the rulers of the Iron Islands did something stupid.

Balon's mistake was assuming Westeros was as devastated and divided as it was during the Dance of Dragons (my theory). His ancestor, Dalton Greyjoy the Red Kraken, pretty much had free reign over the sunset sea for years after the Dance was over. It look Lady Johanna Lannister years to force them off Fair Isle and the Westerlands.
took Balon five years to raise a decently big fleet. Took Euron like 5 days to make an even bigger fleet even though half his ships were taken. The show has some shitty plot writing
It was several months but the show just skipped a lot of time because of budget reasons. It takes months just to sail from the Iron Islands to Essos or King's Landing so it's implied that it took way longer than a few days.

An underrated merciful action of Robert was not killing Balon. He VERY easily could have killed him and nobody (except for maybe Ned) would have cared.

Robert had a solid alliance with four of the great houses in addition to controlling the Stormlands and Crownlands. That Balon thought his rule was weak just shows how incompetent Balon was.
yea he was truly a dumbass, also he somehow thought that the kingdoms closest to him wouldn't also immediately support Robert because they obviously fucking hate the Ironborn and wouldn't want them to be independent just constantly raiding them
Yes Balon is an allegory for stupid people who cling to dying impractical traditions and don't accept reality.
Man I wish they do make a season on this, I want to see Thoros of Myr lighting his flaming sword and breaching the castle with Jorah Mormont.
So it really is awesome how thorros and jorrah both stormed the castle first. I remember hearing that in one of he episodes and I’m glad it was mentioned here
Yes game of thrones

Still, my well-read friends, I cannot wait for The Winds of Winter. Let us all hope that GRRM will write like the wind.
Charlie Suh I don’t think being sold, raped, captured, defeated, and tricked by Jaime makes her a Mary Sue.
Charlie Suh in my book stannis is the best military commander in westeros
Daenerys is no Mary Sue, she is one of the main characters. And using dragons is one of her OWN abilities. She has Grey Worm, Daario and Barristan Selmy to handle military affairs (plus Meereneese who are absent in the show).
If you can't handle fantasy, go read something simpler. I'd suggest the Peter and Jane books.
Well, she did come up with the battleplan to take Meereen, in the books. Every character had been ruined in the show.
Besides, she's a child. Not a seasoned commander who had been trained in the ways of war.

This was a really well done video!! I really enjoyed this, and they say the whole video was produced is extremely impressive. Instead of just looking like yet another Game of Thrones UA-cam video, this video looked like it was made by the show runners as a DVD extra feature. I love how you narrated every part of the Greyjoy rebellion, and the visuals were just as impressive. The animation when it showed the small council meeting when the message was delivered to Pycelle, then Robert got up and walked to the window was cool. 10:36 "Possibly being influenced by the honourable Lord Stark" Oh Boy!
