I can vaguely remember having to change to a bus for a few stations between Greensborough and Ivanhoe for a few weeks when I started secondary school in 1979, and had to take the train. To a twelve year old who was being allowed to use public transport unaccompanied for the first time, it was something of an adventure. Different times.
Do we know when this project will be finished? Also i agree, not extending it up to the actual station at Wattle Glen means the government is being a bit cheap and that means trains can't pass each other at the actual station which puts delays more at risk. If they don't want to duplicate Monty to Eltham i reckon just make space on the other side and duplicate that up until the bridge and leave that for later I really like how you were able to film edit and release in the same day, well done with that.
they reckon late 2022, I think they'll try to finish it before the election in November. for now they don't want to duplicate montmorency to eltham because of the butterfly and a very length environmental approvals process they would have to go through, which is fair enough. It'll happen at some point. And thanks for the last bit :)
I would love to ride my bike along that trestle bridge! We could definitely use two new lines to Eltham. But put them underground or lower them. The trains would make too much noise in an otherwise beautiful environment.
Unless they double the line all the way to Hurstbridge then I don't really see a benifit for an extra platform in Wattle Glen. What Wattle Glen does need is more carparks
I believe it would would been a great loss if the eltham trestle was demolished, had a second bridge built next to it or converted into some bike path.
Ahhhh NIMBYS. Love when people protest something that then blows up in their faces - and they end up missing out on infrastructure upgrades that would likely has pushed up their property prices even higher.
This might be a controversial take, but the butterfly thing has nothing to do with NIMBYs. It's an endangered species, so it's protected by federal environmental law - the project had to be altered from a legal standpoint, regardless of local opinion.
Allegedly they increased the peak hour services slightly; I couldn’t find any evidence of that though. I suspect when the system wide timetables get changed up with the opening of metro tunnel there will be some major service expansion.

Great Video. Hopefully the Butterfly problem can be resolved at some stage, and the duplication through to Eltham can be completed.
They already completed it now. And they built a new Montmorency Station and a new Greensborough Station as part of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication.
Thanks so much; I now live on this line at Ivanhoe and was wondering what was going on. Thanks so much for this very informative upload.
5:55 ... That woman seems to have a bit of a problem in dumping her rubbish on the platform I suppose in the bin.... She does not seem to be happy!
It did seem a bit 'Karen' like. A dig at the filming. I was surprised enough to 'wow' out loud.
How's the lady at 5:54 just throwing litter in front of you!
Enjoying your informative videos. I caught the train to Hurstbridge in December 2020 and enjoyed the scenery. 😃
it is a very pretty line.

Thanks very much for all your research (including travel). Your video was a great educational update on what is an essential an long rail line.
Interesting video, makes a interesting change from daily operations from here in the uk.
Wattle Glen does not have patronage for a second platform.
Nice steady shots man!

It’s just like the Cranbourne line upgrade too.
when a literal butterfly cancels a duplication of a train line
Ahhhhh Melbourne…

What’s the safe working on the line? I recall it was staff and ticket from Eltham to Hurstbridge about 20 years ago.
Hurstbridge line after Eltham was famous for it’s single track, wooden overhead poles and a single Tait motor that ran on Sundays.
Really informative.
Great video!
omg it’s my line
The duplication is nearly complete, it will be next month for trains to run on the duplicated tracks
Am i the only one who saw that lady littering on the platform? 🤔
i didnt notice that when i filmed lol only when editing
Epic!

someone talks about my grandmas line

Well, as a regular user I can tell you that the new duplications have done nothing. The services are exactly the same. More wasted money
