      I worked in the Melbourne yard in 1983, six months as part of guards training. I remember Ewan Charles, who was our instructor, ex Welsh Guards, lost his legs in an accident in South Dynon. "Taffy" James, the two old alcoholics who were permanent in the arrivals yard so as to keep them out of trouble, and a host of other characters. Happy days.

    You can almost guarantee if you revisit the Cranbourne line in 2 years time it would’ve had a lot of upgrades. The major works underway will include Greens Rd crossing removal, Evans Rd crossing removal (completed in 2020), a new Merinda Park station, track duplication, new car parks currently being built at Cranbourne and a new shared bike/pedestrian pathway built beside the railway line between Cranbourne and Lynbrook. They really need to extend the line to Clyde in the near future too.

    On the South Morang Line as of 2018, the Mernda Rail Extension from South Morang to Mernda was completed and it included 3 new stations at Middle Gorge, Hawkstowe and Mernda. Middle Gorge Station was built on ground level and Hawkstowe and Mernda Stations were built above ground with skyrail. And that train line is now called the Mernda Line.
    And as of 2019, the level crossing at High Street, Reservoir was removed by building a 1 km skyrail with a new elevated Reservoir Station.
    Then as of 2022, the 4 level crossings at Murray Road, Cramer Street, Bell Street and Oakover Road in Preston were removed by building a 2 km skyrail with 2 new elevated stations at Bell and Preston.
    Now under construction, is the level crossing removal at Keon Parade, Keon Park which will be removed by 2025 by building a 750 m skyrail with a new elevated Keon Park Station.

    I've always travelled on this line through school and now uni. I knew there was a lot of history behind the Cranbourne/Pakenham line but I didn't expect this level of insight. I'll be keeping an eye out for the old Springvale Cemetery junction next time I'm there haha. Keep up the great unique content mate! Subscribed!

    This was a great video and interesting seeing as in the 80's & 90's I worked at Dandenong, Pakenham, Berwick, Sandown Park, and finally, at Narre Warren. Fyi, the old Narre Stn building is now situated at Myuna Farm in Dandenong. I LOVED that building!
    Also, there used to be a siding at Officer, used for/by a local business. The 2nd subway at Sandown Park was for easy access to the race track and there was a ticket box at the up end of the platform that would open on Race days.

      I remember when the line at Narre crossed Narre road and you'd have to wait at the boom gates to get to Fountain Gate from Cranbourne. They built the bridge over the road in the early 2000's.

      The train to Cranbourne used to only run 3 times a day, so it would have been a very long day making this video back then.

    Koo Wee Rup is about 20 mins out of Cranbourne to Leongatha. About 8 years ago the train track was taken out in Koo Wee Rup for a walk track through the heart of town. This stretches about 1.5km of track. If the plans are to open up the line to Cranbourne in the future then this is a major waist of money. But because they did I don't see this to happen any time soon. Koo Wee Rup is a fast growing town and property doesn't stay on the market long. For this reason I believe the a train is needed.

    Hurstbridge is good because it gets real country and down to singletrack right near the end. On an electric train looking at cows and sheep is pretty good. Sunbury is similar in that there's a point where you just feel like you are going through a huge paddock. Big space between stations.
    The Altona spur is quite unique as it's singletrack for big parts, and goes through swamp/wetlands. Alamein has some of the shortest distances between stations.
    Belgrave/Lilydale in the hills toward the end is majestic. Werribee's got some wild spaces and some dodgy stations. Williamstown is just quaint. A spur for the well-to-do's. Sandringham goes through all this posh bayside stuff, highlight Brighton Beach and Sandy. You've got a lot to choose from, even without the Northern lines.

    Ahh cemetery station can show you were the tracks went before the upgrade ironically they used the sidings every so often I assume to go back to westall but after a train derailed on the sidings they stopped using it pretty sure was under the connex tenure lol always issues

    You left out that the Cranbourne line also went to Wonthaggi. the history of that line is also interesting due to the coal mines at Wonthaggi.

      The Wonthaggi Line was a Branch Line of the South Gippsland Line.

    I grew up in Melbourne, but took my young family to Canada over 50 years ago. Your videos are great (make me a bit homesick), you obviously do a lot of research. However, please slow down!! The pictures of the past are very interesting and deserve more than a couple of seconds, I'd like to actually look at them without having to go back and pause the video. Keep up the good work.

      A partial solution in the meantime is to reduce the playback speed in the triple dot tools and perhaps turn the captions on to have a description of what is shown.

    I stumbled across this post last week. I have since watched nearly all your videos. I have loved them all.
    To give you an idea of my age, up to my late teens I still used 'red rattlers', Harris trains, the St.Kilda line & Princes Bridge station. I remember using the City Loop the month it opened, in particular the Museum station. I can still remember the strong smell of new building materials and the sense of modernity it gave with those bright colours. In 1981 I did two weeks work experience at Commonwealth Engineering just before the first Comeng trains went into service. It was very exciting to be there at that time, I can vividly remember walking through the full size mock up they had of a motor carriage with the driver panel carved out of wood and the walls made of moulded plaster. I also remember a Harris carriage in conversion with sealed widows, air-con units on the roof and newly painted in silver (obviously a trail of the abandoned conversion) The carriage had asbestos warning placards all over it. I remember one morning with some humour workers gathering around to discuss a newspaper article in the Age titled with something like 'New Melbourne trains already running late' Please continue your great work. I have learned a lot from you and I am very pleased to see a person from your generation showing interest in our local history. Regards Peter

    I remember going on the train all the way to Stony Point on a school excursion to French Island in 1991. Ten years later I moved to Cranbourne and was sad to find the trains no longer ran past Cranny station, even though the boom gates and signals were still there, as was the section of track forming the level crossing across the Sth Gippsland Hwy. The boom gates were removed and the 19 metre section of track across the highway was buried beneath a layer of bitumen some time in the 2010's, but beyond that level crossing the tracks to Stony Point remain. I still own my house in Cranbourne, despite moving away 10 years ago, and I'm still hit with a little nostalgia when I drive across the now smooth and silent section of track between the signals.

      I think you are mixing up your railway lines. The Stony Pt pax service still runs daily from Frankston. The South Gippsland line beyond Cranbourne was progressively closed since the 1990s, with a heritage operation running trains as far as Leongatha until about 2016.

    It never ceases to amaze me how much was achieved by the people who lived from the late 1800s to the 1960s or so. This country only had a population of less than 5 million through that era and somhow they managed to lay the vast majority of all of the foundations on which we still rely today i.e telephone and electricity networks, gas, water and sewage pipes, roads, railways and bridges through mountains and bushlands, Clearing vast areas of rugged bushland for agriculture. So much of this was achieved only with hand tools and animal power as well.

      In the late 1800's the population of Melbourne was less than 500,000! That's a lot of infrastructure for half a million people to build. Pretty impressive.

    My dad is in his 80's and says there used to be a goods line out to the Cranbourne sand pits near where the botanic gardens are.

    Nice video! A small tidbit: At 4:16, in your purple circle, you've included a factory and a field above the factory to the left of the circle. That is not apart of the Maintenance Facility! At the very back of that field, once you pass through a gate, there's old railway lines. I've been told by my mother trains still run on them, but I've never seen it. Really cool to see local areas I've visited highlighted here!

    I used to get on at yarraman from 2011-2015, and next to the ticket machine there was a small TV screen with a birdman type aboriginal thing on continual loop! Now I'm on werribee line. Been don't trains for 10 years and love your videos!

    About 1.5 km closer to Dandenong from Lynbrook Station, there used to be another station called Lyndhurst with a few Victorian railways-owned houses around it. It was accessed via Bayliss Rd. In 1981, a few months before the station closed, along with another co-worker I installed some extra temporary phone lines to one of the houses for a local politician and he stood us to a nice home-cooked meal and some discussion about local history. That area haas been swallowed up by an industrial estate.

    I lived between Carnegie and Murrumbeena stations in the 1980’s, as did my mother and grandparents in the 1940’s - and while I’m probably supposed to celebrate the removal of the time-wasting ‘dangerous’ level crossings at both of these intersections - and the building of monolithic railway stations with no respect for the local architectural vernacular - I mourn the loss of the beautiful historic Murrumbeena station, its rail bridge crossing, and the reminder it held of its beginnings as a rural, outer suburban town, with buildings which spoke of its place in time.
    Time moves on though, progress must happen - or else we stagnate - but if progress keeps demanding the obliteration of such historical records of our history, then what we’ll be left with will have no meaningful record of our present, other than that we are the destroyers of our past…
    On a lighter note… once again Max, a brilliant - albeit it, always too short - glimpse in to that history which we may have otherwise lost forever.
    “Annnnd”… two thumbs up!

      The Level Crossing Removals are overall fantastic for the city, but I can't watch all this history be destroyed. I do enjoy seeing Mentone and Moreland trying to integrate the old station into the new one, but this needs to be done more, with more diversification in station designs 👍

    OMGoodness. It's so different now. I used to travel on the Pakenham line. I had never even gone on the Cranbourne line. It's a pity. It's been about 20+ yrs since i've been on Any public transport, due to my panic Disorder. I'd get panic attacks whenever i went on a train. Put it this way. From Springvale to Flinders street, it took me 3 hrs. That's when i was pretty much diagnosed. I do miss them though. Thank u for sharing this video. I got to see just how much everything has changed. Also, the station between officer & pakky, i don't recall a station called Cardinia. However i do remember the GMH stop just before Dandenong. I totally enjoyed watching this. Great job. I've subscribed. 👌 ⭐

    Your presentation has really improved. Both voice over and to camera are excellent. You are smiling at the camera and looking comfortable and enjoying yourself. But there is still room for improvement although a lot less than I'd first feared.
    All you really need now is a bit of help with phrasing, pace and inflection. So I'd be very happy to help you with those because that isn't going to take very much.

I think that over time, I will/ have become more comfortable in front of a camera and when it comes to voice overs, I have tried to become more relaxed and upbeat.       @@the_train_man haha no problem. I'm offering to teach you how to voice professionally if you are interested. It would be nice to see the voice work match the effort you put in to the vision. Your videos are really well thought out and informative. It's obvious you put a lot of effort into thinking through how you want to piece together all the information you want to include in each of them.
      It's the amount of effort you are putting into them which is why I decided I'd offer to teach you how to voice them to the same standard. I wouldn't be offering if you were just some kid slapping together home movie train videos. Yours are a much higher standard than that.

    I'm finding your railway docos fascinating, Train Man. Keep them coming, please. I was brought up in Melbourne and love the Melbourne trains. Not always happy with the slick modern station architecture, which sacrifices all the charm of the originals. So it's great to see the old black and white photos of the early stations, with their quaint waiting rooms and so on.

      Agreed, I believe that some modernisation is good for the train system, but you always must keep as much heritage as possible, that's what I love about the system. Glad you find the videos fascinating, that's my goal, for people to enjoy and learn from my videos. Thank you!

    Travelled on the Cranbourne line for 9 years.
    Electrification 25 years ago, was a huge event for Cranbourne. The cops were wrapped because the youth could get up to mischief elsewhere.

    They should have left the south Gippsland line alone unless they are electrified and duplicate the line because now they have to spend a Fortune to fix it up

      They started the duplication a few years back by opening the tracks on the other side of the platform to public trains.

    I literally just came home from checking out the unused line past cranbourne station, there is an industry lead track coming off the mainline there, which is pretty cool.

    at 1:30 you can see the old ticket booth, the station was burned in mid-70s and was rebuilt, then knocked down again for skyrail

      Wow, I wasn't aware of the old ticket booth, now that is awesome. I will hopefully look into ticketing in Melbourne and it's history in my next video.

    In 1997 I was living on the corner of Lorne St and Grange Rd and would often catch a train at either Carnegie (to go to Oakleigh which was my favorite place to shop), or Caufield (to go into the CBD), or Glenhuntly (to go to Hampton where I worked at Bi-Lo) stations because all 3 are relatively the same distance to walk to. ... And I was born in Dandenong :P

    By the time they get started on the Cranbourne line extension new estates will stretch way past there. Might as well extend it all the way to KooWeeRup, or even better loop it from there up to Pakenham. Costly but with the amount of growth out that way an investment for the future.

    The photo at 1:35; is that a connecting line to the Glen Waverley line?
    Maybe do a video on that also on the Rosstown line.

      Indeed it is James, the Outer Circle Line, heading all the way to Fairfield, intersecting the Glen Waverley, Lilydale, Belgrave and Alemein Lines. I have done a video on it ua-cam.com/video/sFvj_F52Yoo/v-deo.html you can watch if you want.
      As for the Rosstown railway, what an interesting story, I will try and do a video on it after Lock downs! Thanks again

    Hey Train Man, on the Cranbourne line between Dandenong and Lynbrook, there was a station named Lyndhurst which opened in 1888 and shut in 1981.

    Do the traraldon V-line please. theres some intersting history. Ive done some research allready on moe where there is a small museum and used to be an old track to Walhalla. The oak tree is still there.
    At trafalgar they have an old steam train on display nexxt to the station and a holden museaum,
    The stop before that ia Yarragon which has an anit-aircraft gun on display. Not sure the story behind that.
    Im going to do some exploring myself but watching one of your docos is alot easier than making my own.
    Just moved to moe thats, why, Shadiversity lives around here too with his brother Jaxxa

      The Traralgon Line was originally on the Gippsland line which stretched from Melbourne all the way to Orbost in East Gippsland. At some point, passenger services terminated at Bairnsdale and the remainder of the line to Orbost continued to be used for Goods Trains. For a period of time passenger services terminated at Traralgon with Road Coaches servicing towns further east. However, more recently, the train line east of Traralgon has re-opened to passenger services and the line terminates at Bairnsdale again.
      There have been many Branch lines open and closed on the Gippsland Line over the last 130 odd years. (All have since been closed)
      Warragul - Branch line to Noojee via Neerim South.
      Moe - Branch line to Thorpdale via Coalville and Narracan
      Moe - Branch line to Yallourn. (Queen Elizabeth II travelled by train on this line to Yallourn during her Coronation Tour in 1954)
      Moe - Branch line (Narrow Gauge) to Walhalla via Erica.
      Morwell - Branch line to Mirboo North via Boolarra
      Traralgon - Branch line loop via Heyfield and Maffra reconnecting to main Gippsland Line at Stratford.

    The actual South Gippsland line extended all the way to Yarram, not just to Leongatha. Wonderful train trip as a kid.

      Thank you for making mention of the Yarram Line. .... My Mother was Station Mistress of the second Last Station "Alberton" from 1963 to 1981, the end of Passenger traffic on the Yarram Line. Alberton was opened in 1888. The Line was extended from Alberton to Palmerston {just north of Port Albert} I could go on and on. I also loved the trips from Alberton to Flinders Street and Return several times as a Kid, by the way the whole line was called : "'The Great Southern Line".

    Hi TM, Great Vid however you are incorrect regarding naming of Merinda Park Station. Merinda Park is not named after the Park at. Merinda Park Estate was the Housing Estate Development FromEarly to 80's thru to 90's to the East of the Station between the Railway line and South Gippsland Highway. Housing Estate south of Thompson Road (Between Highway and Rail line) was not completed till the Early 90's as a Young kid living in Thompson Road(between Highway and Rail Line), You used to see the V-line Train running up or down the hill from Thompson's Road

      Yes! I remember when the line ran all the way through because I went on a school excursion to French Island in the early 1990's. I was sad to see it cut off from Cranbourne. You have to get a bus from Dandy out there now.

    One time I was going to catch the train to Cranborne but decided not to because of rail replacement buses. That day all the trains shut down due to a computer error

      Hey Sancha, it was kind of a joke, but I guess I mean a cool garden feature at the station. If you ever go to Berwick or see a photo of it, there is a big green garden feature at the front end of the station, which is quite pretty. I do however see from photos that Eltham has some awesome edible garden boxes, awesome idea!

      All the centre doors well and truly removed long before Trainman even born. Last in the late seventies I think.
      So thanks to the original photographer. Often is Weston Langford's appreciated legacy.
