Why did Melbourne keep its trams?
Переглядів 40 тис.2 місяці тому
Melbourne’s tram system is the largest worldwide, being an outlier in Australia and much of the English-speaking or even the western world. It’s one of very few significantly sized tram systems to have survived almost untouched to the present day. So why did Melbourne’s tram network survive, when so many others didn’t? *Sources:* The main source for the video is this Melbourne Tram Museum artic...

Finally, Sir Robert rissson should be honoured by naming the next generation of tram or a current class of tram the "Sir Robert Risson" tram or maybe RR class this is befitting of a man who had visionary foresight amongst all the detractors to promote trams in Melbourne. also, I have met many people who are upset that the W class trams are no more except a handful on the city circle route well they were replaced by an upgraded tram, better than a bus

Main reason Melbourne kept its trams one man my idol sir Robert risson chairman of the MMTB 1949-1970 he was the right man in the right position in the right time, he believed in trams loved trams and fought like a warrior for their retention in Melbourne he believed in modernization/upgrading and extending the tramways in Melbourne he was their at the time when many other cities around the world and Australia were removing their trams for so called progress in the form of replacement buses except for the Victorian railways trams point Ormond and footscray system which closed every tramline was upgraded and set in concrete and duplicated where need be. today's generation of people probably wouldn't know about Robert Risson he should be taught in history classes at school as to why Melbourne never lost its trams, proof of the pudding is that cities all around the world are reintroducing trams and cities that never had them are introducing them as well. sir Robert fought the media and road lobby who wanted trams removed from Melbourne streets he never backed down and counter acted every argument put forward for their removal I will continue with more as page has run out

The cost blowouts are staggering, 85% of Perth will never use this service what takes 15 to 20 minutes by car or MC takes 2 hours by train So well over $15,000,000,000 spent to cheer up just 375,000 people? At $40,000 a passenger would have been better value to offer free cars.

i think what u miss here is that in a lot of cases, rail is necessary as a means to free up space on roads. as one 6-car train is capable of carrying nearly a thousand people, trains are some of the most space efficient modes of transport for cities and starkly contrast the space efficiency of cars, which can only take at max a hundred people for the same amount of space. this isn't even considering most cars are not even half full, hence why road traffic pops up all the time. as a matter of fact, the mandurah and yanchep lines are actually somewhat congested and require even more upgrades and other lines to be built, which is why we are getting the thornlie-cockburn link, cbtc signalling (which will allow for trains every 2 mins, current system is capable of 4 mins max), and more trains, and why we will get an east wanneroo and mirrabooka line some time in the future. these infrastructure projects are necessary and benefit everyone, both road and public transport users. and i havent even gotten to the benefits behind personal health, safety, reduction in pollution and even to the economy. there's quite a large urban planning youtube sphere that u can check out, tho id personally recommend not just bikes videos

@Skyymon Thanks for covering in Great Detail the Cost savings Perth people have ea saved in their daily transit to their jobs Also the vast areas of land used to lay tracks, vast carparks, platforms and buses to service this supposed Green nonsense I will state my comment again, passenger rail is a dead business, thats why TAX Payers money is used, no Private Money is ever invested into passenger rail for profits Private Rail investment is in General Freight were Billions are made around the whole world I was in the rail Game for 30 yrs, my figures prove you are talking total Baloney But hey, go invest $15B in future rail in Perth and see when your returns roll in???

I will say having been a Melbourner and experiencing Sydney's double decker trains for the first time I noticed that they feel really claustrophobic and stuffy. Melbourne's trains definitely have more room (when not full) and more ventillation, this coupled with the fact that most lines' trains will generally at most be at 60% capacity really makes them seem better.

  • @RectifyingTCovenant

I feel like a fair bit of the line could be constructed using cut-and-cover which would offset a bit of the cost. There really isn't much in Fishermans Bend to get in the way (Aside from the West Gate of course) and the recent proposed alignment seems to go underneath Fenrell St anyway. For that reason I am also partial to the alignment underneath Alexandra Parade, as it is wide enough to allow for cut-and-cover without it being prohibitively disruptive.

Thank goodness common sense prevailed and tramway conversion didn't happen to this line unlike the retrograde step done to the port Melbourne and st Kilda lines what was required on the upfield line was mainly done that's closing of some level crossings antiquated but historical hand gates and Signal box controlled gates replaced with boom barriers /level crossing removals introduction of three position signalling and duplication from fawkner to Gowrie and hopefully to upfield and extension to Somerton six car operation replacing the mainly three car operation the nearby north Coburg tramway is hindered by the heavy road traffic on Sydney road I have had argument's with know alls that think tram replacement is better than the trains that ran to port Melbourne and st Kilda if that's the case why don't we replaced the whole train system with tramways, answer off course not it would be a big failure I was lucky enough to drive trains to port Melbourne and stkilda and know the trains were far superior to the trams that replaced them the right proper and only thing was done on the upfield line

Won’t be many of them going down this road. This reminds me of supplying electricity to China through the Philippines Now that’s a big waste of money a huge waste of money but let’s face it. If you’re giving kickbacks to people the bigger the bill the better the kickback this government couldn’t run a bath as an economist and a person who has written law in this country that the federal police use 247 to charge your credit card from fraud from down under where they never stick to any law

I assume you have heard about the Metro 3 proposal? Obviously it's not something seriously considered but after watching this and your Metro 2 video I guess one wonders if you have any comments on if such a thing were to ever be considered for real. Personally, what I will say is that having lived in the area this railway would go through before, I would like more public transport options than just buses. Of course whether it's ever feasible or a lot of people want it is another thing, but as someone reliant on public transport, it's a shame that the only thing serious being considered is the Suburban Rail Loop station (which is at least something that will take the load off the buses). Not even a tram 48 extension. I guess they're at least trying to make the bus connection to the city better though.

They're both smart ideas. Melbourne does need a non-radial line like many comparably sized cities already have. But you're right. This should've been given priority. The SRL is clearly politically driven in order to win over votes in the more historically conservative leaning eastern suburbs.

The Geelong VLine train can go through this, without all the stops. Just using the rails. Metro trains can wait as it passes as Vliners pay more and have further to travel. Not to mention the western suburbs give everyone a headache.
