    Be cool to see what the railway line looks like from late April when the new Greensborough and Montmorency stations open and the completion of the 4km duplicated track. Good work

      Well unfortunately it will be at least a year before you see it from me as I won’t be in Melbourne to pick up more video until next summer sometime.

    The single track from Hursbridge to Greensborough is currently being duplicated, G'borough to Eltham is the first stage. When this was shot they were begining to do the preliminary work. You can see temporary fences in some places. G'borough station, rebuilt 1969 when we moved to the area, is being demolished later this year. There was provision made for duplication then, 1969, with the bridges.
    The G'borough - Macleod section was duplicated around 1979 with the big cutting leading to Watsonia. Passing loop at Diamond Creek is a fairly recent addition, as are the steel stauntions Husrtbridge - Eltham. They were wooden poles prior! There's a big fuss about the fate of the long wooden tresel bridge out of Eltham.
    It's a major job to duplicate the line as it's has so many cuttings. Very hilly part of Melbourne, Hurstbrdige is at the base of the mountains. There won't be any further development from Diamond Creek as it has minimum lot sizes of maybe 3 hectares (can't remember the exact size.)
    The section from Wattle Glen to Eltham is the longest section between stations in Melbourne.
    Very little upgrade work has been done on the line over the years, not much passenger growth. It was the last in Victoria to use a manual staff system.
    The second tunnel at Heidleberg, next video, is only a couple of years old.

      Thanks for your local knowledge. Your import about unlikely population growth is also of interest. I knew that some duplication was to take place on the line, and that second tunnel was part of it, but I was unsure whether any other sections would be done, and you have answered that.
      You made mention of ‘next video’ but unfortunately with UA-cam, what you are offered next may not be the same thing as another person is offered. However I think you’ll find that the video below shows progress works on the second tunnel which may or may not be the video you saw earlier. I noticed that long trestle and wondered about its future.

      @@myunknownland9272 Sadly all the gardens and pansies in the detergent containers will go soon.A major support for the foot bridge has already been built.
      There was once a dog that lived at the station and befriended the station master (late 70s), I photographed them for the local paper.

    The line to Hurstbridge should be double track all the way. This will allow for further population growth along the rail corridor. There should be 2 terminating platforms at Hurstbridge with a diamond cross over to cater for up and down trains terminating or starting from either platform.

      All that would be nice but is suspect the reasoning is the others way around - duplicate the track when more trains are needed for the loadings.

      @@tressteleg1 It also doesn't necessarily need full double tracking to increase service frequency anyway. Second platforms and passing loops at places like Wattle Glen would allow for meaningful capacity growth if the timetabling can be achieved.

      @@tressteleg1 Also, looking at the current timetable, there would seem to be plenty of scope to extend existing services from Greensborough to provide more frequent services to Greensborough without any changes to infrastructure. Might need an extra trainset or two but, if it ain't yet broke, no need to fix it.

    Wow a lot more of the line is single track than i thought! Also at 14:56 there looks to be one of those SPAD arms at the middle of the platform, why is that there?

      It is called a Train Stop. That ones function is as a speed trip, to confirm the driver is slowing for the signal at stop ahead otherwise the train brakes would be tripped early hopefully allowing the train to stop short of any collision point.

      The same applies in sections of the underground where there are many more trip arms than signals. When a signal clears soon after a train leaves, the arms may go done one by one at a predetermined rate, and as 100 said, it is a method to make sure the following train is not coming in too fast.

    Would have been nice if they would have extended to duplication a few metres further through wattle Glen station which makes this project cheap. With also stopping the duplication right on top of Rattray road in Montmorency. The level crossing really needs to be removed at diamond creek. Greensborough station getting rebuilt for the 3 third time in nearly 75 years. I’m a local to hurstbridge love the scenery and the trestle bridge and can’t wait for the duplication works to be complete. Keep it up mate

      Duplication to Eltham didn't happen, it was cut back to Montmorency to protect a local population of the endangered Eltham copper butterfly. They also duplicated Diamond Creek to Wattle Glen.

      @@babyboomertwerkteam5662 I still think that duplication of the line can still happen at Eltham. They can just put the newline above the other if construction of line side by side affects the butterfly. Just remember that to eliminate level crossings the line had to be built either under or over the existing roads. A similar construction method can be adopted to have a single line above another single line. They just use the same corridor to construct the sky rail line. The least amount of cutting or filling required the better things are for the butterfly. They should just duplicate the line side by side where they can without affecting any insects or animals.

    Opposite side passing at Diamond Creek and Eltham! Is that a usual practice? I though Westona was the only location for that!?

      I also noticed that. You will see that coming into the loop, it is a straight run to the right side, but a sharp turn to the left side. So running to the right when the train is going reasonably fast puts much less stress on the pointwork. Leaving slowly on the curve is not as bad. Also, note that the driver’s seat is on the left side of the train, so his rear vision mirror would give a much better view of the passengers boarding.

      Eltham station when it was rebuit from dead end platform on shop side in th sixtees was designed for two way operation . Diamond creek with last upgrade and new signalling was allowed tfor two way operation on new platform

      platform At DCK was original platform was always used for both directions new platform was only used for trains in peak to cross before that a shunt was required out of platform to loop then leave after other train arrived

      Just private driveways into single houses. If those people can’t look out for trains, they will soon learn the folly of not doing so.
