@@BK_BT I suppose that would be an interesting way of going about and a good series of videos. Apologies for coming off crass. You made sound as though the engine would be sold to offset a C1 na build, assumed other parts would follow. On one hand it's already been messed with to a minor degree, what's a few more but on the other it's fairly rare to find a low milage SI that hasn't been modded into oblivion or wrecked. Personally, I want to see both done, ha ha. The older I get, the purist I become but I'll never lose my love for Honda modding. To those talking about him messing with a nice em1, you have to understand... this is a nostalgic project for him. He wants to make the car what he wanted it to be when he was 20. Also, he’s Matt Moreman, so it has to be stupid clean.
Working at a McDonald’s while helping my mom and little sister hope one day I can get this car it’s my dream car barely turned 18 been working since I was 14 I will get this car one day ❤️
JUST MAKE IT OEM PLUS no rise, carbon fiber hood, trunk, etc. My em1 was type r theme ; s2000 steering wheel, type r door cards, type r seats, Mugen twin loop exahust.......end more cant remember. This cars are hard to find , I can't find a clean one
If it were my money, I would find a ragged out Civic Si if modifying to the extent you are thinking. That car is on the level where it should be preserved as is.
I assure you this was the last of the dealers concerns on his lot and I still thank he left money on the table at 25k. Not much but between 25-30k... if it he 0 rust. I am a dealer and sold one that was rough a few months back, but was stock with 0 issue.
It might be peak high school nostalgia talking, but I think this design is absolutely timeless. I love everything about these cars. I have a 01 S2000 and learned a lot about it watching your CR build / progression. Very excited to see the coming videos. No doubt you have the determination and knowledge [and cash to back it up] to make this really special. Good luck!
Unexpected but happy to see this on the channel. My dad bought a NBP DC2 ITR brand new in 2001 and your story about the one at the dealer reminded me of our experience in picking his up.
Mat, the nostalgia makes me wanna cry. I Will never forget the day I walked into a dealer and went for a test drive in a mint, imported JDM spec SIR that only had 28 000 km on the clock. This thing was pulling hard even at past 8000rpm. The experience turned me into a hardcore JDM fanboy who would go on to own 3 civics. The only other non-Honda car I've driven, that has a motor that matches B16/b18 for character must the e90 m3 with the s65 !!!. Good luck on this build, cant wait to see how it turns out. All the way from South Africa
Had a 99 model same color. Loved it. Made a few mods. Lowered, exhaust, intake, etc. Went to all the shows. HIN, NOPI Nationals in Atlanta. Did the super street tour to NOPI. Seems like yesterday. Simpler times for sure.
@RICARDO haha I still remember running 15.0 at 92.7 MPH (yes I remember the exact ET and trap speed lol) in my almost bone stock Integra GSR, with only suspension modifications. That was like 15 years ago. Just a touch better 60' time and I would have been in the 14's.
Been a fan of yours for a while and I respect the fact you haven’t forgotten your roots! Looking forward to this build! Love the attention to detail!!!
OMG, my 1st love that started it all that eventually got stolen! Hot Import Nights was the jam back in the day! Can't wait to see how it comes out! Thanks Matt for bringing back all the good feels and nostalgia with this car! You rock man!
Hell yes!!! Love the SI. If you're going for OEM/period correct, then leave the spoiler on it and don't put red honda badges on it (leave those for the type r).
Matt is doing car audio again, yes!!! Win!!! One of the first videos of his I ever watched was the audio install on the blue gt3 back when it was Matt Morman not Obsessed Garage. I learned so much from those videos.
Couldn't be more excited for this! Currently doing a full rebuild on a B18C that I'm going to be putting in my 88 Accord with this being the level of clean I'm striving for. Can't wait to see the build we all dream of come together!
I think keeping the heritage of the original motor and building the b16a2 and either supercharging or turbo charging it would be amazing. I really hope you build the original motor. 🤞
I love your ideas for this build! I had a 95 civic coupe when I was 18 and I always wanted to do a build like this but didn't have the money for it. Love this video!
This car is absolutely beautiful. Please, consider keeping the spoiler. It came that way from the factory, and it wouldn't be the same without it. Personally, I would build a B20 VTEC for this particular car if you are staying NA, or keep the B18 block, and run a Brian Crower stroker kit and make the motor 2 liters. It's not a 2000 lb hatchback, so it's better to have more Torque, especially when you are adding weight with a huge subwoofer and box. I'm the same age group, and had similar cars with big stereos when I was in highschool, so I think we have a ton in common. I owned a 94 Civic Hatchback with a JDM B18C w/ LSD transmission back in the day with basically full bolt-ons and some suspension done. It was a wonderful car to own and work on. I had it for 10 years and got rid of it when I had my first kid. I still miss that car terribly everyday, and the urge to build another Honda grows stronger every day. I already put a big stereo in my truck just for fun. Got on Orion XTR 2500.1 for $339 and it puts out well over 3,000 watts @ 1 ohm at 13.8v. It powers 2 American Bass XR 12"s in a 4 cubic ft ported box. Really powerful system, and it was really inexpensive. Since the amp and subs cost so little, I was able to get extra goodies. Ran all 2/0 pure copper welding cable for everything, crimped copper lugs, 300 amp alternator, 2 extra group 31 AGM batteries. It gets LOUD!!!
No Type R Red badges please!! First off beautiful, museum piece car. I would love for it to stay this way like others have said. Although the way you speak about a no expense build is the only way that would do it justice. Some recommendations: Wheels: You were on the money here. Exhaust: Fujitsubo RM01A or Legalis R. Spoon N1 (loud), Mugen Twinloop. Intake: TODA Racing ITB setup would be my ultimate choice. Secondary choice would be a Mugen DC2R airbox with OEM or custom arm. Header: TODA, Spot on. Rocker Cover i would personally go wrinkle black or Spoon Yellow. Red is too garish imo. Function 7 rear lower control arms and subframe brace. EK9 Cluster to replace the white gauges. I do prefer the boot wingless too. Looking forward to the build!
👊🏼🔥Great Work Bro! No way doing all period correct NA motor is controversial at all. That’s ideal and what makes Honda, Honda. Fun reliable economical cars. Honda’s are under appreciated and awesome set of wheels for anyone. Glad to see you’re doing this it’s going to be awesome
Matt this is so good! I’m the same age which probably explains why I am into this. Back then I was a vw kid and a closet Honda guy, but doing a period correct build on this is definitely the way to go! Swapping out the cheap stuff for oem+. The NA route I think is the best since this chassis is fwd. I hope you can build a b18c that revs to the moon and can spank a dc2 type r. That is another Honda product I lust after as an old man. It’s nice to watch this build as the ricer stigma can be detached from the car now since it is so old. Back then that is what I hated about the Honda community. Now I love the engineering they put on such an affordable package. This car is going to fun at the end!
Only the Spoon twin block calipers will bolt onto the EM1 front knuckle assembly. You can get away with using 2007+ Mini Cooper base 280MM front brake rotors if you're staying 4x100, or get a special 4x100/114.3 brake rotor from Spoon. You can also do a 5 lug conversion from a DC2/EK9 in where Spoon twin block calipers will also bolt onto the front knuckle. Spoon monoblock calipers are meant for the newer Honda chassis (DC5, CL9, FG/FA, AP1/2 etc.)
The Honda community welcomes you back with open arms! Let’s do this!

Awesome!! Cannot wait to see the transformation Matt!!
This is great! I had a 42k mile 99 SiR I sold a few years ago. I just bought another Integra Type R last night. Can’t wait to have all the VTEC again.
The car looks incredible; excited for the series.
I might go broke on entry's when you go to give this one away, this generation of civic holds a special place in my heart. I'm excited to watch this build!
Very much looking forward to this build Matt. Inspired me to build my ej8 as well. 27k miles man... WOW
To those talking about him messing with a nice em1, you have to understand... this is a nostalgic project for him. He wants to make the car what he wanted it to be when he was 20. Also, he’s Matt Moreman, so it has to be stupid clean.
Can’t wait for John at LHT to put his hands on this amazing machine!
David Hernandez is he doing the work?

Just discovered your channel because I've been looking to get an EM1 in the UK. So excited to watch all these videos, sounds like the perfect build.
Bought a 2019 si last year for 24k that’s crazy
Was thinking the same here... Does this car can really reach 20k and 25k, when he said that on the video a was WTF!!
No thanks. I don't some stinky old crap.
I think Spoon currently has the most expensive Honda Civic build which apparently costed $150,000 to build.
yeah built by legends is building a spoon civic and a mine's gtr both cars are going to be insane
Spoon ep1 might be the best ep1 ever.
Seeing Matt going back to his audio roots will be really rad! Thats actually why I joined way back when he was doing his home audio videos.
For the love of God and everything on this earth, Keep the spoiler! and please go for the Spoon Sw388s! thanks!
I'm calling it now - this guy has a time machine - that Civic is PRISTINE!
“It’s going to auction soon” oldest car salesman trick in the book.
No, it was already in the process. I know that for sure.
Good luck!
Consider me one of the “crankies”. You’re killing me. I’ll give you $26k.
Dude I'm with you. This one is too nice to mess with. Put a million miles on it and take car of the thing, don't bastardize the thing
To my knowledge there is only one em1 with fewer miles. He is going to ruin this car.
Unexpected but happy to see this on the channel. My dad bought a NBP DC2 ITR brand new in 2001 and your story about the one at the dealer reminded me of our experience in picking his up.
This is amazing
Mat, the nostalgia makes me wanna cry. I Will never forget the day I walked into a dealer and went for a test drive in a mint, imported JDM spec SIR that only had 28 000 km on the clock. This thing was pulling hard even at past 8000rpm. The experience turned me into a hardcore JDM fanboy who would go on to own 3 civics. The only other non-Honda car I've driven, that has a motor that matches B16/b18 for character must the e90 m3 with the s65 !!!. Good luck on this build, cant wait to see how it turns out. All the way from South Africa
"I bet you he's got more than 100 grand under the hood of that car." Let's make it this car.
Had a 99 model same color. Loved it. Made a few mods. Lowered, exhaust, intake, etc. Went to all the shows. HIN, NOPI Nationals in Atlanta. Did the super street tour to NOPI. Seems like yesterday. Simpler times for sure.
15:45 “overnight parts from Japan”
Yes! Love it!
I have never been more excited about a car on youtube. wow. Can't get over this.
Michael Phillips really? 25k for a used civic with 150 hp? 😂😂😂😂 what a joke of a car this is
Matt now wants to live his life a quarter-mile at a time. He used to live his life one foam-wash at a time.
No to the Honda badges. Currently own a JDM DC2 Type R, so I’m very excited for this project!
i WANT IN!
Been a fan of yours for a while and I respect the fact you haven’t forgotten your roots! Looking forward to this build! Love the attention to detail!!!
B series is 100% the way to go. I cannot wait to see this. I also think it's so cool you'll include the original engine.
Can't wait for the giveaway banner...100k Civic giveaway...your commitment to going all in is amazing
As a 50 year old honda lover for life. I will be glad to buy those stock headlights from you for my em1
Money Gill agree i dont see a point of changing to a slightly better engine spending 10k plus.
Some recommendations:
Wheels: You were on the money here.
Agree on the valve cover. If he goes Spoon parts the yellow valve cover would be perfect.
👊🏼🔥Great Work Bro! I love watching all of your videos and the content you bring here to You Tube, Keep up the Great work I can't wait to see everything you bring in the future, especially with this Honda Civic Si, I had a 2000 EX for my first car and loved it! Oh hey and that black locking extension cord is freaking amazing I want one so bad!!! lol Again keep up the great work can't wait to watch your future videos👊🏼🔥
This is awesome and brings back memories. I owned a 99 EBP myself years ago and loved it. Got a turbo setup from Full-Race and had a lot of fun. Great vid man.
Matt! is just all around car guy! he not that stuck up dude with high-end cars .. GOOD Stuff Matt!! Looking forward to the seriousness and the craziness
I paid $29,000 for my 18k mile s2000 about a month ago and i don’t regret a thing. seriously looking forward to this build!!
No way doing all period correct NA motor is controversial at all. That’s ideal and what makes Honda, Honda. Fun reliable economical cars. Honda’s are under appreciated and awesome set of wheels for anyone. Glad to see you’re doing this it’s going to be awesome
PS keep the spoiler
