Paul Weller is a national treasure. One of Englands finest ever singer songwriters. Genius.

To me, this will always the song I associate with standing in football terraces at 2.50 whilst waiting for the game to start at 3. I love it. It's impossible to not tap your feet to the beat. The bassline is so infectious.

"A Town Called Malice" was the only single that charted in the states. IMO, they the third of the greatest power trios ever formed, with the other two being Rush and the police. Being American, It took me years to dive into them. Apparently, the US corporate shills couldn't understand all of the UK references that Peter Weller put into his lyrics, and only released this single.A full on tragedy, because their entire discography is brilliant.

Yes.. That’s Entertainment, Absolute beginners are awesome. Then on to Style Council, then to Paul Weller. Some incredible music across the groups and his solo career.

Your next song by The Jam: "Precious". This is when Paul Weller, the Modfather, was getting into his soul/funk phase. And you have to hear the LIVE version. Because you want Johnny freaking blaze fire? THE JAM...WAS A FEROCIOUS... AND I SAID FEROCIOUS... LIVE BAND.

Also, "The Eton Rifles", Weller's diatribe about class warfare in the UK.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! Trivia: this song was featured in the movie Billy Elliot. 😊 Yes, Bruce Foxton is considered one of the best bass players! The Jam was one of my fav bands in the ‘80s (here in the US they were considered ‘alternative’ non-mainstream but they were one of the most popular bands in the UK at that time) Paul Weller (singer/guitarist) is an icon in the UK/went on to form the Style Council and some fabulous solo albums as well. As far as other Jam songs, I think you’d like Beat Surrender and Absolute Beginners (horns!); so many good ones tho. Weller’s solo work I think you’d like Broken Stones, Above the Clouds and Amongst Butterflies. Again too many really great ones! The Style Council had a few hits here in the US with My Ever Changing Moods and You’re the Best Thing; may be worth you checking out. 😊

If you like horns and bass check out Nite Klub by The Specials, make sure you check the longer live version, its far far better than the studio version.

There are no bad songs from The Jam. They formed in the UK in the late 70s and in the very early days were basically punk, but then Paul Weller (the singer and guitarist) discovered The Who, and blended that 60s R&B with their 70s punk sound. That's when they became big.
Later on, he added soul and funk into the mix.
A lot of politics in their songs, and a lot of social commentary (this is a prime example).

The first Jam gigs were early 70s . The first line up was Weller and Steve Brookes, both playing guitar.

The Jam were one of the biggest English bands from the late 70s to their split in 1982. At that time there was a revival of the Mod movement from the 1960s, i.e. sharp dressed, more culturally aware urbanites, who watched French and Italian cinema, and who often got around Vespas, Italian motorscooters. The Jam were Mods and sang serious songs about social issues affecting people of their generation at the time.
Town Called Malice was one of their latest releases as it came out in early 1982. The title is a play on words on “A Town Like Alice” which was a book and a film set during WWII. (The “Alice” is the town of Alice Springs in the deserts of central Australia.) The song has nothing to do with the book or movie though, it’s just a cool title and a play on words.
The lead singer, guitarist and songwriter, Paul Weller, went on to form the Style Council in the rest of the 80s, who were even more fashion-conscious, hip and soul-inspired, then he forged a solo career. He’s still going and his latest album was in 2022!
Try “Shout to the Top!” by the Style Council next!

The song is about growing up in a town called Woking, which is 25 miles from London, England. I'm guessing they refer to it as 'Malice' cos there wasn't much for young people to do there, except get drunk and hang out in gangs - and I'm guessing they are referencing a kind of quiete desperation felt by all generations, (with their reference to housewives). I'm pretty sure, when they sing about housewives 'clutching milk bottles to their hearts' this is a reference to one of the really good looking, flirty milk delivery men who I recall from my childhood :-)

Thatcher the milk snatcher ..1971 as education minister, (Shirley Williams later extended it) Thatcher went on to abolish free school meals for the poorest people in 1986 when Prime minister. She despised working class people.
