- In this video we're checking out The Jam once more. Now that we've put together a spreadsheet to refer to, we're coming around to some older suggestions. We love what we've heard from the Jam. I'm sure this is no exception. Enjoy!

Yeah, real up beat guys.
Rows and rows of disused milk floats
Stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives
Clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing
When tears come fast and furious
In a town called Malice
The Jam always do that to us lol. The music sounds fun and upbeat but there is usually a very serious story or message behind it. We are enjoying the music but the message gets lost sometimes until we listen a couple of times. Thanks for watching!
Hiya,
What's the chance you could do a song by the Jam called "precious"
This was the double A side with TOWN CALLED MALICE
@@darrenwestbury8569 , take a shufty here :-) The Jam - Precious/Town Called Malice - TOTP - 1982 ua-cam.com/video/y-omTiPH4I8/v-deo.html
Im Glad you liked this, Its my ringtone. Fantastic lyrics in this, "when it comes down to beer or the kids new gear, its a big decision in a town called malice" you cant believe how hard it was trying to raise a family at this time in Thatchers Britain
As a UK citizen the Jam are the soundtrack to my life, i could die in my sleep tonight and i would die a happy man i was so lucky to have lived in this time, i have no regrets at all, GO PAUL,BRUCE AND RICK ....LEGENDS NUFF SAID
Malice was the 3rd UK No.1 single for The Jam & the second to debut at No.1. I was just 13 when it came out & I loved it immediately. The line, whole streets belief in Sunday's roast beef gets dashed against the Co-op, do you want to cut down on beer or the kids new gear, it's a big decision in a town called malice. Well I just thought wow. I still love it lyrically but I've heard the song so many times I don't enjoy listening to it these days. In 1982 when this came out The Jam domestically were huge. I even owned the Canadian 12 inch single of Town Called Malice, wish I still had it now. Keep up your good work. It is always interesting to hear younger folks take on 80's music.
I really enjoy watching the two of you react to songs, thanks x
Best song on the album was Running on the Spot …. Lyrics summed up our government and how they made the working class feel
great tune!
Fuck yes having that played at my funeral

The Jam's rhythm section is so undervalued. They're absolutely *cooking* on this one. One of the best live clips of The Jam is them doing Precious on a TV show. Weller's basically *spitting* with rage, and the thing rocks like a mofo...
Definitely the band changing to a more soul mod style which showed up in Style Council especially on tracks like Shout To The Top and Speak Like A Child which i still play a lot
The Bass player's name is; BRUCE FOXTON & he's a fantastic bass player 🤘
Absolutely love The Jam and Paul Weller aka The Modfather.... You heard it repeatedly in the movie and play, "Billy Elliott"
We watched Billy Elliott. I suppose we didn't go looking, at the time, for songs from that movie. Good thing, I suppose, considering.
18 top 40 hits and 4 number one singles 1977-1982...you need to check out The Style Council Paul s follow on group
Pretty sure this was used in National Lampoon's European Vacation when the Griswald's are in London driving around.
In 1982 The Jam were hands down the biggest band in the UK and then Paul Weller inexplicably disbanded them. I had to take a week off school I was so upset!! 😪
Classic track from my home town boy, like Weller I escaped too the town called Malice.
Watched "The Pebble And The Boy" film recently which featured music from The Jam. Enjoyable movie.
To either cut down on beer or the kids new gear? great lyrics,my wife said (when the kids were little) you will cut down on the kids new gear 😂
The Jam were great. Always liked Eton Rifles..Worth a listen maybe
We've listened to it on one of our videos. Great stuff.
@@hanierfamily and I listened to that...doh! Sorry 🥸
Listen to the intro to I'm ready for love - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas .
Billy Elliot. It’s a prominent song in the movie. You may have heard it there maybe?
It’s my second favorite Jam song. That’s Entertainment is my fave and probably most well known Jam song. Paul Weller is the modfather for a reason.
Also in The Walking Dead
Went straight in at number one this
Check out the film Billy Elliot. He does a wicked dance to this song.
My favorite song by The Jam. To my ears, this kind of was a hint of where Paul Weller was headed musically at the time. More soul/R&B sounding compared to earlier Jam tracks. After he left The Jam, Weller went on to form The Style Council which really dug into a soul sound. Didn't see any tracks from that group in your list of earlier videos so you might want to check them out. There are some fantastic songs to react to from that group. Their best-known track is probably My Even Changing Moods so you could start there if you're interested.
We did Big Boss Groove a little while back.
@@hanierfamily I went and listened to your reaction to that one. Not all their tracks are political (i.e. My Ever Changing Moods). As I was listening to the track, it occurred to me you may want to give Everything But the Girl a try. They kind of had the same vibe going on as The Style Council in terms of their sound. When All's Well would be a good starting place for them.
There is an intended discord between the lyrics and the music. The music was a Motown tribute
Great song choice, love the Jam and Paul Weller is an amazing singer song writer. The Jam were a huge part of youth culture in the UK in the late 70s early 80s. I came across your channel a few days ago and i am really enjoying the music. I have a question, have either of you heard of the Sam Ryder? He is going to be the next world star to come out of the UK . If you want to be blown away by how AMAZING Sam is check out his song's Tiny Riot and More. The Live recordings from York Hall and The V&A are just out of this world. Jump on board the Sam Ryder train because this man is going to be a massive star. Great reaction Thanks.
We will look him up for sure
@@hanierfamily I'm sure you will love him, Tiny Riot is the best song i have listened to in many years.
As jock said in the comments, running on the spot is a fantastic tune that needs a listen!
Bruce Foxton on bass
Cynthia said, mid-song that the beginning reminded her of another song. I wouldn't mind betting that other song was "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes.
Definitely something from Motown.
Favorite track on this album is Carnation, sounds like a love song but when you listen to the lyrics….
How about Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart?
it was in the movie Billy Elliot....tap dancing
I can kinda see why you would say, Motown but not even close. This goes much deeper. For me anyway. This sound this memory. The old Mtv
Its based on You Can't Hurry Love
Paul Weller and Co.... Superb!
Masterpiece from 『The Gift』
Wrote it when he got back from the pub one night
Actually that was That’s Entertainment!!
@@stephenbyron8607 Yes! You’re right!
He took the start off “you can’t hurry love..”
This came out 12 months before Phil Collins’ song. Certainly there was a Motown influence with this , although very English lyrics!
@@jonathancole833 It's not Phil Collins' song though is it.
@@keef1990 Yes I see what you mean. Apologies!
I suppose I was reminded more of Collins’ track because the bass intro on that sounds louder and tighter than the original version, at least to me!
@@jonathancole833The start certainly sounds more like Collins' version than the Supremes I agree with you.
How unusual to have a friendly interchange in the UA-cam comments section haha.
@@keef1990 😁😁
Try "Start" by The Jam.
On their Sound Effects album. Influenced by The Beatles "Tax Man"
Complete with backwards guitar! 🙃
Good suggestion - there is the single, or the slightly extended album version.
We sort of prefer album cuts.
Affects
this was in a film callled billy elliot, i would be surprised if you have seen it though
We did once.
A great reaction, thank you. This is an upbeat track from, The Jam, the beat is very similar to 'Where Did Our Love Go' by 'The Supremes', well spotted on the Motown connection.
Please could you react to 'Elvis Costello' either one of two of his tracks, or even both if you want to; 'Watching The Detectives' and/or '(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea', thank you.
We know 'Watching The Detectives' but, we'll check out the other. Thanks
@@hanierfamily Thank you, it's very much appreciated.
@@hanierfamily If you have time, could you please react to some of Paul Weller's solo songs, such as 'You do something to me', 'Sunflower', 'Wildwood', 'The changingman'. I also like, by Elvis Costello, 'The river in reverse', 'Deep dark truthful mirror', 'Town cryer', 'A good year for the roses'.
please do Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home
Slick trick: bouncy baseline, and shiny keyboards... the lyrics betray the real world of Weller and the Jam. It makes you wanna dance... but we should be rioting. Wanna learn about writing a song or lyrics? Weller is a great place to start.
Awesome the modfather
Billy Elliot?
Very influenced by Motown great track co op is a supermarket kids new gear is kids clothes a lot of us were unemployed the jam were our heroes to uk kids they started off with no money were poor and working class they took on the establishment and won we were so proud of them heartbroken when they split up😭
You've got to listen again this is not a fun song! Find the lyrics guys-it's social comment on the UK at the time.
Too bad you missed out on it in the 80s!
best paul weller songs for me are funeral pyre and speak like a child
Fun?
music was fun, not the message
@@hanierfamily I was chuckling watching you bopping along.
The Jam were THE band for ALL working class lads aged 13-30 and are still one of my go to groups after a couple of beers ([ am 51 now).
Well, it's late now so I'm off to bed.
Keep on rockin'
TTFN.
Uplifting? You like? Try , shout it to the top, or start , great tracks
Not uplifting. Upbeat. The lyrics are certainly not uplifting.
@@hanierfamily lol no but they are real, Paul was very political, shout to the top is actually by the style council, Paul wellers other band
The song is very political and anti-government with the Tory party running the UK to its knees, if you have heard the song before maybe it's from the film billy elloitt,
its was based in the 80s and the miner's strike and the fighting on the picket lines and a young boy who likes to dance to ballet music, here is the clip ua-cam.com/video/dp7yjqSTwuA/v-deo.html
